Upcoming Events In This Issue Message From The Chair Dear Members, H ope you all had a fun filled and joyful summer! We try to cover all sorts of outdoor activities in order to have a wonderful time with our families and friends. I am proud that our chapter executives provided a range of new events over these beautiful months. Our very popular summer events like the golf tournament and annual summer picnic were big hits as usual and allowed our members and their families to come out and enjoy some time together! For the first time, with the help of the Let`s Talk Science organization, we provided a full day engineering camp for young kids which was very successful. Our chapter also offered a full day workshop on the Professional Practice Exam (PPE). Check out this newsletter for the details of these events and many more! Now that we are well into the fall season and winter is just around the corner, we are back to normal routines of job, school and/or extracurricular activities. The chapter is also working hard with plans for several technical, social and sport events in the coming months. Our website (www.peobrampton.com) has a list of updated events. The chapter has planned its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on January 20, 2017. Please consider attending the AGM and participate in the governance of our member-run association. Please keep your e-mail address with PEO up-to-date to receive announcements of such events in a timely fashion. On a final note, in the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, I would like to thank all the chapter’s hard working executives, committee members and volunteers who support the chapter with amazing support and enthusiasm throughout the year. Lorraine Gray is a Protection and Control Supervisor at Cherrywood Transmission

Station, currently on temporary assignment as the Manager of Protection and Control Technical Services where her team provides technical support to the Field P&C staff around the Province.

Lorraine is responsible for managing commissioning projects. From a young age, she never doubted she would become an engineer. She was drawn to field work during a placement at the Cherrywood Transmission Station as a recent graduate.

“I have always been a hands-on person and enjoy seeing the end product of my work,” she said. Throughout her career, Gray has never felt intimidated in the male-dominated field. Instead, from the start she saw it as a welcome challenge.

“I was confident that I could do the job regardless of my gender,” she said. Gaining

respect in a male-dominated field can be a challenge, and Valerie Lane, Customer Operations Manager, believes that is part of the reason why some woman don’t pursue field work.

“I think there are many young women who are interested in the field but decide not to pursue it because they are intimidated by it or question their ability to comprehend or complete the work,” Lane said.

“I have a passion for what I do. I love the combination of people interests and technical know-how. As a technical manager, my job is to make sure that the right person is matched to the right job. But through that job, I am also working first-hand to complete projects that are relevant to the public. Our transmission grid is central to life in Ontario and therefore I believe in getting the job done right, well, and safely.

I am also an Executive Member for Hydro One’s Women in Trades, Technology, and Engineering (WTTE) network at Hydro One (http://www.hydroone.com/wtte/Pages/Default.aspx). The network is charged with supporting women in these non-traditional roles,” Lane said.

Notice of 2017 Annual General MeetingAnnouncements

September 29, 2016

Our chapter organized its annual Engineering Intern (EIT) Info Night on September 29, 2016 at the Professor’s Lake Recreation Centre. This year, the event was also co-hosted by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE). Both PEO and OSPE EIT program

managers provided information on the procedure for acquiring a P.Eng. licence. Tracey Caruana, manager of the PEO EIT program, provided a detailed presentation on topics such as acceptable engineering work experience and the templates for recording work experience, and answered questions of the attendees. Next, Baijul Shukla and Harry Alakbarov from OSPE presented on how the society can assist EITs in licensing, job search and career development. Several courses, such as the Professional Practice Exam (PPE) workshop and the PEO Experience Record writing seminar, are offered by OSPE throughout the year. The event also provided networking opportunities to the EITs. It was free of charge and pizza and soft drinks were served.

PEO Brampton Chapter organized the 2nd Paintball Tournament at Survival Tactics Paintball in Caledon. As with all chapter

events, the goal was to provided an opportunity for members to mingle and network with fellow engineers while enjoying a fun outdoors activity.

It was a beautiful day for outdoor paintball. We had a very diverse

group of 25 brave warriors ranging from experts to novices and included engineers, EIT’s, friends and family, which were divided into two teams. This allowed us to engage in friendly competition, while developing winning strategies and team building.

The afternoon wrapped up with a delicious BBQ and everyone nursing their battle wounds and reminiscing over the strategies and war stories.

The Engineering Camp took place on August 6th at the Loafer’s Lake Recreation Centre. This event targeted students from grade 4 to grade 7 and was hosted in collaboration with the “Let’s Talk Science” Group. The purpose of the camp was to expose students to

science experiments and team work.Twenty one enthusiastic students were able to attend.

The Camp consisted of three workshops and a final team work project. It was a very successful event, where science and engineering were the main focus of the day.

Every year, the Brampton chapter organizes a picnic to enjoy the summer in the company of friends and family. This year, our

chapter organized the annual family picnic on Saturday, July 16 at the Cedar Grove site of the Albion Hills Conservation area. Nearly 90 PEO members and their families attended the event. The chapter, again this year, covered the entry fees to the conservation area for all attendees!

Luckily the weather was bright and warm all day long. Everyone enjoyed a variety of munching food, barbeque selections and drinks

during the lunch hour. The picnic site was lively with children playing, and filled with music and interesting discussions amongst the members. Our volunteers worked hard on generating a fun-filled and engaging environment by organizing several games for children and adult couples. All kids received prizes at the end! We also had a short networking session in which all attending members introduced themselves and provided their professional background. This was helpful in getting the members connected and explore more networking opportunities. In the end, everyone dispersed with a cookie and wide smile on their face!

Professional Practice Examination Prep SessionJuly 9, 2016

On Saturday, July 9, PEO Brampton chapter organized a full day workshop at the Earnscliffe Recreation Center to

provide guidance on the Professional Practice Exam (PPE) that all Engineering Interns (EITs) must write in order to get their P.Eng. licence. During the seminar, all attendees were encouraged to practice writing a mock PPE exam in an exam setting. All EITs attending this seminar were given a set of questions for both

Sections A (Professional Practice and Ethics) and B (Engineering Law and Professional Liability) from the past PPE exams to write in three hours. Our instructor, Mr. Grant Boundy, P.Eng., reviewed the answers and marked the exams as part of a group discussion. Mr. Boundy also discussed the thought process for answering questions and important points to cover for each question. The registration charge was $15 per person and included breakfast in the morning and a light lunch as well as copies of exam and review sheets.

Brampton chapter started the 3rd round of the PEO’s Licensure Assistance Program (LAP) in June this year. The program is meant to link EITs with P.Eng. mentors for guidance on the licensing process. The enthusiasm shown by the EITs during the registration

process has been overwhelming since this program was launched in 2013. This year, the chapter was able to team up 25 EITs with their guides who are generously volunteering their time to help these interns. The chapter organized a training session on Thursday, June 23 to provide detailed information on the program. This training session also reviewed the mentoring techniques and ideas to develop a successful relationship between the guides and interns. Program participants and chapter executives met at 6:30pm at the Professor’s Lake Recreational Center in Brampton, where the training was provided by Ms. Tracey Caruana, EIT Program Manager. There were several interactive exercises and useful discussions of mentoring skills. The dinner was provided in between, and the session ended at 9:30pm.

Annual Golf Classic TournamentJune 25, 2016

The Brampton Chapter held its 7th annual golf tournament in June at the Caledon Country Club.

We had 20 participants and the Golf Gods were truly smiling on us – the weather was fantastic, the course was lush and beautiful, and one could not ask for anything more.

We had a great putting competition, followed by a Free Gold Clinic to both duffers and pros to get a leg up on understanding the course better.

Thank you to our sponsors for providing wonderful prizes and support.

Brampton Chapters Annual Mathletics Competition was held at Sheridan College. Mathletics is designed to demonstrate the

application of mathematics and engineering in everyday life, and as a learning tool for children to understand important concepts related to engineering. We continued our collaboration with Peel District School Board and found a new partner in Sheridan College.

Once again this year’s event was received with great response with over 100 students registering. The competitors were grouped into two divisions based on their grade (Junior: grades 6, 7 and 8 and Senior: grades 9 and 10) and participated in two rounds of testing, a practical (hands-on) testing, and an interactive test using RF student response system technology. Students competed in teams of two for the hands-on Robotics design challenge.

Following the first round of testing, a free pizza lunch was provided to all participants to ensure the students were fueled up for

the second round. All students who competed received participation certificates, while the highest scoring students from each division, the first, second and third place winners, received prizes. The winners of the interactive test were awarded monetary prizes of $100, $75 and $50, respectively, while the winners of the design challenge received engineering design kits.

Overall the event was a great success with all the students and we received numerous positive comments. Although there were a couple hiccups during the day, they were identified so we can address the issues and ensure the future events run smoothly.

On behalf of the planning committee for Mathletics, the Brampton Chapter would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s event such a huge success. The success of this annual event is a credit to all the volunteers, sponsors and the executive board members of the chapter who helped out. Also, a special thank you goes out to Professor Paymon Sani and Professor Ramin Nowbakht Ghalati from Sheridan College, and Anthony Persaud,
