FUNDED RESEARCH AND FELLOWS PROGRAMS

2021 - 2022 Colloquium on College Sport (In)Equity: Working within and beyond the law to achieve racial justice praxis. Spencer Foundation. Co-Pi with Dr. Siduri Haslerig ($50,000) Grant to fund a colloquium and an edited volume to advance racial equity on several fronts by pushing the field toward more nuanced and impactful analyses. To that end, this colloquium will assemble an interdisciplinary group of critical scholars of college sport for a series of four virtual meeting sessions to interrogate the limitations in current approaches and propose shifts to the theoretical, methodological, pedagogical, and media engagement approaches used by college sport scholars. The colloquium will produce scholarly engagement that will advance the field in ways that are intersectional and nuanced. Following the conference, expected outcomes include: 1) an edited volume; 2) innovations for curriculum and teaching of practitioners; 3) external outreach strategies to shift media conversations; and 4) selected colloquium recordings for public distribution. 2021 Racial Justice within College Athletics: Developing Practitioner Workshops that Work. JRCoE Graduate Studies & Research Office Grant. Co-Pi with Dr. Siduri Haslerig ($12,000) Grant to research racial justice programming within athletic departments. These workshops were in response to the contemporaneous unprosecuted police killings and racial uprisings, and in acknowledgment of the visibility of athletics as well as the changes necessary within the athletic department itself. The lead facilitators built the workshop series using critical theory and research literature and have iteratively it improved through three series (summer 2020, fall 2020, spring 2021). Grant will assess the effectiveness of these workshops and consider how to develop sustainable, on-going, and expansive justice practices. 2016 SMART Research Fellow, University of California Berkeley, Graduate Division
