DEAR SAINT JAMES FAMILY,
L ooking back over the last
year, we have learned much.
We began last school year—
facing a mountain of uncertainties—
with our focus on how our values shape
us and guide our actions. Throughout
this past year, we have experienced the
significance of our school’s core values
of character, commitment, courage,
and community. Through the trying
circumstances we faced, we have seen
in new and deeply felt ways that we all
needed each other to keep going day by
day. Many things that our teachers,
staff, and students did each school day
to make school work demonstrated great
measures of Character, Commitment,
and Courage and represented the
heart of the Community that defines
school life at Saint James.
In the actions of our school community, I
was daily reminded of one of my favorite
poems, “Sermons We See” by Edgar
Albert Guest. Through his poem, Guest
shows us that our actions speak a
powerful language and that the examples
we set through our actions can make a
difference in the lives of the people
around us. As we went about our work
each day of guiding and supporting our
children in school, many lines of this
poem were on my heart. As Guest so
clearly explains, “[T]he best of all the
preachers are the men who live their
creeds, / For to see good put in action is
what everybody needs.” As I walked the
halls during the school day, greeted
students in the mornings or during
afternoon carpool, or cheered on our
students during a great performance or
a well-played athletic game, I realized,
through the examples of the adults and
children in our school community, that
in challenging times—as in all times—the
best thing we can do is to put good into
action.
Through the challenges and the
adversities, our school family has
become stronger. And, we have all
learned how to become better through
the examples of each other. Our
children, our teachers and staff, and our
families have all been part of doing
something that has taught us new
lessons—and we are all the better for it.
There are countless lessons we have
learned this past year. Here are three
that I will always remember and that I
have seen in action at Saint James each
day over the last year:
We can do anything when we keep our
focus on what is best for our children.
We all have limitless capacity to do
good, and we have the power to
multiply our good every day and in all
we do. We multiply our good as we
actively look for ways to build up our
children and everyone around us and
when we truly dedicate ourselves to
serving others.
We teach our children many things
each day; first and foremost is
character. Our actions and our
examples have the potential to teach our
children some of the most important
lessons about character and what
matters most in life.
You will see in this issue of Columns
stories and examples capturing some of
the ways we have demonstrated our core
values and our mission commitment to
preparing our children to flourish in life
through challenging them and assisting
them in realizing their potential so that
they are ready to lead lives of
responsibility, service, and achievement.
We are grateful for our Saint James
family, and we are hopeful for our future.
As we look ahead to the coming year, we
have a deeper understanding of how
much we all mean to each other and the
impact we can make in each other's lives.
We are moving forward, forever changed
by the past year and guided by the
lessons we have learned. Our focus will
remain on doing what is best for our
students, doing all the good we can for
each other, and living in ways that teach
character to our children. As we move
forward, we know deep in our hearts
what it means to say, We are Trojans,
24/7! We are Saint James School!

FALL FESTIVAL IS BACK!FALL FESTIVAL IS BACK!TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19: MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR A NIGHT OF FUN, GAMES, AND COMMUNITY
Two years ago, the Saint James Parent Association (STJPA) was
redesigned to better engage parents across all divisions in
contributing to the success of the school. Composed solely of parent
volunteers, the STJPA works together to raise funds that can be used to support
school needs and bring the school community together.
Although the 2020-2021 school year was a little different due to Covid, and big events
like Fall Festival and the Used Uniform Sale were canceled, the great work of the
STJPA continued. The annual gift wrap sale was moved online, which was a huge
success. Two family nights were held at local restaurants in the spring. In addition,
the STJPA began the development of an online business directory to help promote
Saint James parent and alumni-owned businesses.
Funds raised through STJPA-related activities are so important to our school.
During the past year alone, these funds were used to purchase the following items,
to name a few:
+ Touchless thermometers for
temperature checks
+ CPR mannequins for student and
coach training
+ Umbrellas for picnic tables
in the Quad
+ Middle school robotics supplies
+ Swag bags for overnight field trips
+ Senior t-shirts
+ Kindergarten and senior signs
+ Teacher thank you meals
GET INVOLVED!The STJPA is always looking for parent volunteers to help chair and serve at
different events. To find out more, email [email protected].
A WORD OF THANKS We would like to offer a special thank you to the 2020-2021 STJPA Board. Your
commitment to furthering the mission of the school and to serving our students has
truly made us better!

T hese four words may sound simple on the surface;
however, they carry a big meaning at Saint James
School. These are our core values, and they are the
foundation of everything we do. Each one defines what it means to
be a Trojan and how to fulfill our mission of preparing students for
lives of responsibility, service, and achievement.
The Dalai Lama once said, “Open your arms to change but
don’t let go of your values.”
During a year that required us to continuously be flexible and
adaptable, our students, faculty, and staff put our core values
into action more than ever. Every single day, they lived the
phrase “We are Trojans, 24/7!” by supporting and
encouraging each other and creatively finding ways to carry
on traditions and stand behind our mission. Here are just a few
examples of how we saw our Trojan values brought to life
during the past year.
Our Values Shape Us
Character. Commitment. Courage. Community.
This spring, William
Taylor received the
Middle School Principal’s
Award for consistently
demonstrating what it
means to be a Trojan of
character. Described as
well-liked, respectful, and
friendly, William is a
leader among his peers. Mrs. Shelaine Taylor praised William
as a student who consistently does the right thing and doesn’t
hesitate to acknowledge when he makes a mistake. Well
done, William!
High school history
teacher Mr. David Rudd
‘81 is known for
intentionally putting
others before himself, and
this starts with his
students. With more than
25 years of teaching
experience at Saint James, Mr. Rudd has always been
thoughtful in how to reach students and bring out the best in
each one. Mrs. Jennifer Poplin says, “He is well-loved by
students and fellow faculty members for always leading by
example, serving others, focusing on the whole child, and
helping others succeed.” That is what the Trojan character is
all about!

Commitment “Commitment is what transforms a promise into a reality.”—Abraham Lincoln
Courage “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” —Winston Churchill
Community “Community is, first of all, a quality of the heart. It grows from the spiritual knowledge that we are alive not for ourselves but for one another.”—Henri Nouwen

There is no better example of Trojan commitment than Ms. Vicky Christie. Last
year, Ms. Christie retired from Saint James. Then Covid happened, and the 6th
grade math position opened up a month before school began. Dr. Larry McLemore
called Ms. Christie to see if she would consider coming back for at least one year and
moving to middle school. Without hesitation, her answer was, “Yes!” We are so glad
she has decided to “stay out of retirement” for a little longer!
The best kind of friend is
the one who has the
courage to be friends
with anyone, no matter
what. And, that’s the
kind of friend you get
with rising sixth-grader
Emily Darby. This
courage is just one
reason Mrs. Andrea Harris says Emily was selected for the
Elementary School Principal’s Award. “Emily is kind, she
excels at what she puts her mind to, she is fiercely
independent, and she is a great communicator with her
teachers,” Mrs. Harris said. Congratulations Emily for having
the courage to stay true to yourself and to be the friend we all
want in our lives.
One doesn’t need to look much further than our Elementary
Enrichment Teachers for another great example of Trojan
courage. In an effort to minimize the spread of germs and
cohort each individual class of students in one dedicated
classroom, this wonderful team of teachers had to rethink
everything. Instead of teaching in their specialized
classrooms, they spent most of the school year traveling to
each class with their art supplies, musical instruments, live
animals, technology devices, and a very large collection of
library books! Yet, they did it with a smile on their faces and a
focus on what’s best for our students and the greater STJ
community.
Imagine stepping
onto the t-ball field
for the first time
and hearing your
name chanted
from the stands.
This is exactly what
it was like for pre-schooler Mac McCurdy, who is also the son
of high school faculty member Mrs. Joanna McCurdy. During
t-ball season this spring, Mac had his own fan club of high
school students who cheered him on and nurtured his
development. There is nowhere else you will find a stronger
sense of community than this!
Dutch student
Thomas
Malmberg walked
into STJ on the
first day
understanding
little English but sporting a smile a mile wide. His happy
demeanor immediately endeared him to his fellow fifth-
graders and eliminated any language barrier. Affectionately
known as the “labrador,” Thomas jumped into every Saint
James activity he could with a desire to be part of the greater
Trojan community. This contagious attitude earned him the
Elementary International Student of the Year Award.
Each year, the Middle School Leadership Award goes to a student who is
dependable, leads by example, and steps up to get the job done. A high-performing
student both in and out of the classroom, Danny Trock received this special honor
because of his unparalleled commitment to leading others as the middle school
president of the Student Government Association (SGA) and to being involved in the
band and the tennis team. Danny, we are so proud of you.
T here is a first time for
everything, and 2020 was
definitely a year of firsts. It
would be easy to focus on all of the
difficulties in the challenges, but we
prefer to think of them in a more positive
light. Every challenge presented an
opportunity— to work together to find a
creative solution, to teach our students
flexibility and adaptability, to build
resilience in times of trial, and to truly
celebrate the wins along the way. And,
that’s exactly what the Trojan family did.
To truly understand how far we’ve
come in the last year, we must first
take a look back at Spring Break 2020.
As the Covid pandemic began to sweep
the nation and uncertainty about the
future set in, Saint James leadership
made a quick and decisive move to
begin preparing for the possibility of
virtual learning. Students were released
for Spring Break a day early with as
many supplies sent home as possible
“just in case.” The faculty and staff
used that Friday to start training on
how to use programs like Zoom and
Screencast and continued their work
over the next 10 days preparing new,
creative ways to teach students
remotely. By the Wednesday after Spring
Break, we were up and running with
virtual school and were proudly the
first school in Montgomery to do so.
Switching from traditional, in-person
school to virtual school basically
overnight was a huge learning curve
for teachers, students, and parents.
The dedication our entire school
community showed was incredible. It
wasn’t without its challenges; however,
every student and faculty member made
the best of the situation and made an
effort to celebrate wins along the way.
The greatest celebration was the
drive-through parade held on campus
in May. As faculty and staff lined the
streets, parents and students drove
through with their cars decorated, signs
of appreciation held high, and smiles
from every direction. There may have
been a few happy tears, too. It was the
Trojan community at its finest and
filled all of our hearts to overflowing!
Fast forward to August, and the first
day of school. After such a long period
of time apart, it was a joyous day to
see our students running into their
classrooms, excited to see friends, and
happy to be back. Although we couldn’t
see their smiles behind the masks, we
could see all of the smiling eyes, and each
classroom felt like we were home again!
The new school year certainly looked
different—there were masks,
temperature checks, spaced-out

desks, hand sanitizer stations, and
increased sanitization efforts. Lunch
was moved from The Commons to
classrooms in an effort to prevent the
spread of Covid. Words like hybrid,
Voluntary Remote Learning (VRL),
orange, yellow, close contact,
asymptomatic, quarantine, and
vaccine were heard so frequently we
almost considered adding them to our
spelling curriculum! And, for the first
time ever, teachers had a dual
classroom with students in person
and remote at the same time, bringing
a whole new meaning to classroom
management.
With all that was new and different,
Saint James students, faculty, and
staff worked together to creatively
keep our traditions alive. From the
Trojan Walk at Homecoming and pep
rallies and Holiday Convocation held
on the football field, to Veterans Day
on the Quad and our Kindergarten/
Senior Buddy Program, the Trojan
spirit was alive and well with all that
makes Saint James so special.
In the spring, we saw even more
progress in the right direction.
More than 85% of our faculty and
staff courageously chose to receive
the Covid vaccine, helping create
more immunity and showing an
unmatched dedication to the
well-being of our school community.
In addition, we continued to see our
faculty strive for safe and creative
ways to get our students back to doing
the things they love to do from
academics and arts to athletics.
Elementary programs, Cabaret, The
Putnam County Spelling Bee, choir
concerts, and band concerts brought
our musicians and performers back
on stage. Our students hit the road
again with field trips to Lanark,
Birmingham, Savannah, and Camp
Chandler. Awards Day celebrated our
students’ achievements. Trojan Day let
everyone engage in some much-
needed fun and laughter. Seniors
began the busy lead-up to graduation
with college sweatshirt day, a day at
the zoo with their kindergarten
buddies, and of course, prom. Our
students brought home state
championships in cross country, track
and field, and tennis, and our athletes
reached the playoffs and earned
individual accolades in almost every
sport. We saw students earn national
academic recognition and district and
state-level honors in the fine and
performing arts. Plus, we came
together to celebrate our seniors and
kindergartners at Senior Walk and
their respective graduation
ceremonies. It was just like any other
year in the life of a Trojan, with masks
and some new vocabulary words
thrown in along the way!
From the first day of virtual school
last spring when we were nervous but
excited to see each other on iPads to
the last day of school this spring when
Dr. McLemore celebrated by going
down the whale slide with the
Kindergarten class, it was truly a year
we will always remember. But most
importantly when we look back, we
will remember the commitment and
dedication of our faculty and staff, the
resilience of our students, and the joy
it brought everyone to FINALLY see
our halls buzzing with activity and to
once again see the smiles behind the
masks. We are Saint James School!

S TEM at STJ has for many years been an important focus
in developing the whole child and helping our students tap
into their individual potential. In addition to learning
about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM
programs teach our students skills that will benefit them throughout
their lives—things like critical thinking, problem-solving, innovation,
teamwork, and project management.
Under the direction of Mrs. Deborah Otis, Ms. Martha
Cavanaugh, and Mrs. Tina Waggoner, many of our elementary
and middle school students had unique experiences this year that
allowed them to learn, grow, and compete in STEM-related
competitions—and they brought home a lot of hardware!

STATE TECH FAIREach year, the Alabama Consortium of Technology in
Education (ACTE) holds tech fairs at a regional and
state level for students interested in submitting projects
in categories ranging from animation and productivity
design to robotics and video production.
This year, students in 2nd–5th grades competed first at
the Young Trojan Tech Fair, and those in third grade
and above who placed 1st or 2nd automatically qualified
for the ACTE regional tech fair. In addition, we had a
number of middle school students who chose to
participate in the regional tech fair, with a goal of
qualifying for state. All of those students, in 3rd–8th
grades, who placed 1st or 2nd in their category and age
level at regionals automatically qualified for the ACTE
State Tech Fair.
Our students had a wonderful showing at all three tech
fairs, with 23 students qualifying for the statewide
competition. Congratulations to our eight state
champions, three 2nd place winners, and three 3rd
place winners!

TECHMGM COMPETITIONSEvery December, TechMGM partners with companies and
organizations across the community to celebrate national
Computer Science Education Week and to raise awareness
of STEM and computer science opportunities in the area.
This year’s celebration included several STEM-related
competitions among area independent and public schools.
1st Place Rube Goldberg—The Rube Goldberg competition
focuses on using elaborate steps to accomplish a simple
task, and our Blazing Trojans did just that with their
hands-free sanitizer machine. This creative team of fifth
graders used a kit composed of marbles, dominoes, string,
cardboard paper holders, and much more to build this
amazing machine and show that even during a pandemic,
hygiene can be fun!
1st Place Glide App Design—This competition challenged
middle school students to use the Glide App, which
improves efficiency through the use of Google sheets, to
design a school-related app that would either provide
information on attendance or extracurricular activities.
The Flaming Trojans, a dynamic group of seventh graders,
won the design competition which allows users to look up
information about Saint James’ extracurricular activities
for middle school and above.
This winning team was also invited to build an app for the
Montgomery TechLab Accelerator Demo Day in April. At
the event, nearly a dozen people were able to pitch their
start-up ideas to local investors and leaders in hopes of
securing funding and support for their businesses. Our
students created an app that allowed attendees to get
details and contact numbers for each pitch using a QR
code. The crowd cheered them on for their hard work,
team-oriented approach, and creativity!

F ield trips have long since been a Saint James
tradition, and after a short break, our Trojans are
thrilled to be back on the road again to great
destinations! Although times and places may have looked a little
different than years past, the memories were just as amazing—
and the adventures were used to help shape our students’
character, responsibility, and independence.
Savannah, GA
Every year, our eighth grade students, their teachers, and
several administrators embark on a journey to Washington,
D.C. Due to the many Covid restrictions in our nation’s
capital, this year’s class took a different route and headed to
one of the world’s friendliest cities—Savannah, GA. The fun
began with a bus ride from Montgomery and continued upon
arrival with a visit to the National Museum of the Mighty
Eighth Air Force, Old Fort Jackson, and the Georgia State
Railroad Museum. In addition, they took a full tour of the city,
visited the marine biology lab at Tybee Island, and danced
their way down the river on a riverboat cruise. From the
authentic southern cuisine to the incredible lessons in
history, the Class of 2025 had an unforgettable experience.

Birmingham, AL
When the seventh graders boarded the bus to
Birmingham in May, they knew it was going to
be a great day at STJ! Up first was the
Birmingham Zoo, where the students observed
many animals in their natural habitat and
explored all the zoo had to offer. The next stop
was Vulcan Park. There, they learned about
the unique history of the iron and steel
industry and the important role Birmingham
still plays in the industry today. Finally, they
ventured to the McWane Center where they
experienced the many different STEM exhibits
and watched an IMAX movie on underwater
caves. It was a nice change of pace, and the
students enjoyed every minute!
CAMP ASCCA
Each year as our fifth graders prepare to embark on their voyage to
middle school, they take a much-anticipated trip to Camp ASCCA for a
three-day Environmental Science Camp. Located on Lake Martin,
Camp ASCCA provides students with the opportunity to engage in fun
outdoor activities—such as forestry, canoeing, ziplining, fishing, and
living streams—under the supervision of their teachers, chaperones,
and friends. In addition, they focus on developing independence and
team-building skills while taking time to appreciate the natural world
around them. Evening activities are also designed to bring out the fun
in all who attend, and karaoke is definitely at the top of the list!
This year, Saint James took two trips to Camp ASCCA—one with our
fifth graders and one with our sixth graders who missed out last year
due to Covid. Parents, students, and faculty members said it was well
worth the wait, and they made memories (and developed new skills)
that will last a lifetime!
We were honored to welcome Mr. Fred Draper ‘88, Mayor of Anniston, AL., as our 2021 Commencement speaker. He delivered a wonderful address to the graduates and their guests about how serving people from all backgrounds throughout life’s journey teaches you about yourself. In addition, Mayor Draper talked about failure, saying that, “Your response is what defines you, not the failure itself.” He charged graduates to get back up when they fall and to serve by helping others who fall as well.
Mrs. Kiki Hughes was awarded the G. Stanley Frazer Faculty Award for her unfailing commitment and numerous contributions in all aspects of STJ. Mrs. Hughes is the history department chair in our high school and also serves as the advisor for our youth in government programs. Saint James alumnus and former Alabama Youth Governor Claudia Hubbard ‘18 and Ryan Barranco, a graduating senior and the 2020-2021 Alabama Youth Governor, presented the award.
Mrs. Andrea Harris was awarded the Melba B. Richardson Lifetime Achievement Award for her years of service, leadership, and positive attitude as first a teacher and now elementary school principal. Mrs. Harris knows every family in her division, builds strong relationships, and is unfailingly positive and kind. In addition, she is always ready to help make STJ better and recently served as the co-lead for our widely applauded school safety action plan.
Senior Ella Taylor delivered the Senior Address during Commencement. She encouraged her fellow graduates to use courage, grit, and compassion to positively shape the world, not just conquer it. She ended her address by saying, “Every single one of us has something to contribute. We just have to have enough courage to love people, and enough grit to do it when it’s hard.”
Senior Spencer Madore was awarded the G. Stanley Frazer Student Award as selected by his peers and presented by the Board of Trustees Chair, Retired Lt Col Dex McCain. Spencer is well-loved by his classmates and fellow Trojans for his positive attitude and for representing the ideals that make Saint James the top college preparatory school in the Greater Montgomery area.

ALWAYS REMEMBER, YOU HAVE WITHIN YOU THE
strength, THE patience, AND THE passion TO
REACH FOR THE STARS TO change the world.—Harriet Tubman
“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much — Helen Keller.
When my husband and I first toured
Saint James in 2013, we were
immediately greeted with a sense of
belonging. We felt at home here and
were confident Saint James would
provide a loving and challenging
environment that would help our
children realize their fullest potential.
This year, Jamison and Keagan will
enter the fifth and fourth grades,
respectively. From their first days in
Pre-K3 to now, they have been nurtured
every step of the way while being given
endless opportunities to learn, explore,
and grow. We have seen them branch
out of their comfort zones, develop
friendships with students from
countries and cultures all over the
world, and flourish socially, emotionally,
and academically. And, we are forever
grateful we chose Saint James School
for their education.
Last July, I took on a new role with the
school, joining the staff full-time after
working as a volunteer and substitute
teacher for several years. Being on this
side of things (especially during the
Covid pandemic) has given me an even
greater appreciation for the
commitment, dedication, love, and
support poured into our students. It is often in the most challenging of times that you see just what a community is made of—and Saint James certainly shined during the last year. By coming together as
leaders, faculty, staff, parents,
grandparents, and friends of Saint
James, we did not just “manage”
through the Covid-19 crisis, we excelled
through it! While many students around
the country fell behind, our students
thrived.
How did we accomplish this? The
answer is simple: teamwork.
Helen Keller once said, “Alone, we can
do so little; together, we can do so
much.” From virtual school to on-
campus learning, the Saint James
community successfully navigated the
uncharted waters of the Covid-19 crisis
because we worked in partnership with
each other.
One specific set of partners that I would
like to recognize are our donors. In the
pages that follow, you will see the names
of those who so generously gave to our
school this year. Your unfailing
dedication and your desire to make a
lasting impact is a gift to us all, and
especially to our students today and in
the future. From the bottom of our h e a r t s , thank you for your support of and your continued trust in Saint James School.

The Year In Review
”
Every year, the generosity of the Saint James family near and far
makes a tremendous difference in the lives of our students. Each
gift we receive allows us to go above and beyond what our tuition
dollars fund to make unique enhancements to our school and grow new
programs and experiences that will benefit our students for many years to come
We are so appreciative of all who thoughtfully chose to support Saint James
School this year with your financial and in-kind contributions. Your gifts make a
lasting impact and help us make the unimaginable possible within our treasured
community. Thank you!
This Annual Fund list reflects gifts received from July 1, 2020—June 30, 2021.
“MGC” denotes companies that have contributed matching gifts.
“HS” denotes grandparents who have earned recognition in the Heritage Society by
contributing $500 or more during the fiscal year.
“HPM” denotes those who made contributions to the Hunter Pappas Memorial Fund.
Every attempt has been made to provide an accurate list of donors to the campaign. To

T he Saint James School Commons opened in the Fall
of 2019. Although lunch was moved to our classrooms
this past school year due to Covid-19, we were still
able to enjoy using The Commons for our elementary programs and
Kindergarten graduation. This year, we look forward to returning
back to The Commons for lunch and many more special events.
We are so appreciative of all who have generously given to create a
common space for our school community to come together to enjoy
meals, elementary programs, and other special events.

In April, we hosted our annual silent auction with a different twist - hence the new name Sunrise to Sunset. The event was held virtually over a three-day period,
with an in-person preview day of select items on the first day of the auction. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we were able to offer 259 auction items, including nearly 100 STJ experiences, a lot of beautiful jewelry, custom artwork from several of our talented alumni, travel packages, and much more. Bidding wars started early and continued right up until the end, and we were on the edge of our seats the entire time! In all, we raised more than $34,000, and 100% of the proceeds for each item sold went directly to the division, team, or organization for which that item was designated. We are grateful to all of our parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends who made Sunrise to Sunset another huge success by either donating an item or purchasing an item. We would also like to extend a special thank you to our wonderful event sponsors.

The importance of a successful
campus event or school tour
cannot be overstated. Families
considering Saint James seek rigorous
academics, stellar arts and music programs,
championship-winning athletics, and robust
extracurricular offerings. When touring a
family, I see the awe in their expression
witnessing classes change on the Quad or
walking into our impressive facilities. What
is most rewarding, however, is when a
prospective family sees the culmination
of the Saint James mission: our students.
The Saint James School Student
Ambassadors serve as our official
hosts and hostesses. This elite group of
student leaders serve as liaisons,
spokespeople, and advocates for the
Office of Admissions. Most importantly,
ambassadors are the living embodiment
of the excellence of Saint James.
"Saint James welcomes new students
every year from different countries who
are embraced and respected by the
student body. As an ambassador, I
have loved helping them acclimate to
our school and making them feel right
at home. I find this to be a unique
attribute of the Saint James student
body that you cannot find anywhere
else,” said Izabella Janush-
Hernandez ‘21.
Ambassadors are highly motivated
and have strong interpersonal skills, a
positive attitude, and a commitment
to integrity. These students possess
effective decision-making skills, the
ability to motivate others, and a
willingness to work as a team. Since the
program began in 2014, ambassadors
have played a vital role in attracting
new students to the school. The
Student Ambassador program allows
students the opportunity to participate
in various official roles alongside Dr.
Larry McLemore, the Board of Trustees,
and school administrators. Ambassadors
also assist in more casual settings like
preschool assessments, welcome events
for new students, and daily tours.
“It is an absolute honor to be chosen as
a student ambassador. I love talking to
others about how Saint James has
impacted my life,” said Hannah
Richardson, a rising junior and new
2021-22 ambassador.
The ambassador selection process is
competitive. Applicants submit a
comprehensive packet including two
teacher or coach recommendations
and a statement explaining why they
want to be an ambassador. Students
then interview before a panel and
answer questions that force them to think
on their feet. Annually, ambassadors
participate in a summer retreat where
we review public speaking best practices,
marketing and brand management,
and expectations of the role.
Unequivocally, one of my absolute
favorite aspects of my job is working
with this diverse group of young leaders.
They enrich my life in so many ways,
and I know they have an enormous
impact on the success of our school.

T he Saint James School Writing
Center began serving high
school students in 2017. This
past year, despite the challenges that a
global pandemic presented, we were able
to expand our services by providing peer
tutors to work with the student body, a
dream that emerged after researching and
talking with numerous other organizations
around the country.
Students interested in becoming peer
tutors had to submit an application with
teacher recommendations prior to last
spring’s move to remote learning.
Students also had a one-on-one interview
to determine their commitment to this
budding program. In the end, seven
excellent peer tutors, all seniors, were
chosen for this inaugural program:
Sidnee Beavers, Sumner Brown,
Barrett Hammond, Paige Hemmer,
Izabella Janush-Hernandez, Zoe
Tatum, and Ella Taylor. This group is
to be commended for their enthusiasm,
problem-solving skills, and willingness
to help their fellow students!
Each tutor attended in-person Peer
Tutor Training, which was guided by
the training provided at other schools
nationwide, along with materials
provided by the SSWCA (Secondary
Schools Writing Centers Association).
Lessons included the proper technique
and process for student tutoring
sessions and multiple methods of
appointments given the Covid pandemic:
synchronous (in-person and Zoom) and
asynchronous. Tutors are also trained to
be a writing coach who gives constructive
criticism and feedback to the tutee, and
at no time does a tutor write any portion
of the assignment for a student.
This expansion of services has been a
wonderful addition to the high school.
For peer tutors, they receive volunteer
hours which can be applied to one of
numerous high school volunteer
requirements. For the student body,
the addition of peer tutors means
additional times when help can be
requested, including nights and
weekends over Zoom.
The Writing Center and our new class
of peer tutors look forward to another
great year for 2021-2022!

YMCA YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP
By: Kimberly Ramsey, Writing Center Director
<<Saint James has a long history of
students earning top leadership
positions in the Alabama YMCA
Youth in Government program.
Ryan Barranco ‘21 served as the
2020-2021 Youth Governor, which
is voted on by students across the
state after a rigorous campaign
period. Although the vote was cast
in person before the pandemic,
Ryan’s official responsibilities were
held virtually, and he was a great
representative of the Saint James
community.
In March, Jake Yohn, a rising
senior, was elected as the 2021-2022
Chief Justice after a challenging
campaign period that was conducted
virtually. Congratulations!

5th Grade: American Voices
Kindergarten: The Littlest Christmas Tree
S aint James has a rich history
in performing and fine arts,
and our elementary school is
no exception. Each year, our elementary
students put on age-appropriate stage
performances that help build lifelong
skills such as confidence, teamwork, and
communication. Under the direction of
elementary art teacher Patti Pelham,
they also create beautiful artwork that
complements the theme of their show. It
truly is a special time for each grade.
David Rubenstein, chairman of the
Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts, said this about performing arts,
“The world is a complicated place, and
there’s a lot of division between people.
The performing arts tend to unify
people in a way nothing else does.” This
was especially true this year as it was
one of the few times all year that
elementary parents were able to come
together on campus. We are so proud
of these students for having the
courage to get on stage, sing solos,
perform dances, share lines, and put
on outstanding shows for their families
to enjoy. Bravo!

””Homecoming Queen Tamya Bruce is pictured here with crown
bearers Clare Ramsey, Susan Jehle, Jordyn Stewart, Cecilia
York, and Harper Horsley. After the ceremony, Tamya said,

break barriers that have yet to be broken until now. I hope to be
a light that helps this wonderful school shine even more.
