What is It

Festival dances are cultural dances performed to the strong beats of

percussion instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture

usually done in honor of a Patron Saint or as a thanksgiving for a bountiful

harvest. It also features the people’s culture by portraying their way of life

through movements, costumes and implements inherent to their place of

origin.

Some of the famous festivals in the country include Sinulog of Cebu,

Dinagyang of Iloilo, Ati-Atihan of Kalibo, Aklan, Buyogan of Lingayen

Leyte, Bangus of Dagupan, T’nalak of South Cotabato, Maskara of

Bacolod City, Bambanti of Isabela and Kadayawan of Davao.

In Cebu City, Philippines – The Sinulog Grand Parade will take place

on 3rd Sunday of January. A tribute to the Holy Child (Santo Niño) it

involves dancing the Sinulog, a two-step dance, believed to be an indigenous

ritual that traces its roots to tribes of pre-hispanic Philippines.

What is the meaning of Sinulog?

The word Sinulog comes from the Cebuano adverb sulog which

roughly means "like Water current movement;" it describes the forward-

backward movement of the Sinulog dance. The dance consists of two steps

forward and one step backward, done to the sound of drums.

Why is Sinulog important?

On the religious impact, the Sinulog is a celebration and expression of

faith and devotion of Catholics. It is a reliving of piety and atonement for

sins via the sacrifice of the novena prayers, masses and the procession.

Festival? Historical accounts say that before Portuguese navigator

Ferdinand Magellan came to Cebu on April 7, 1521 to plant the cross on its

shore and claim the country for the King of Spain, Sinulog was already

8

danced by the natives in honor of their wooden idols and anitos.

Then Magellan came and introduced Christianity.

What does Pit Senyor mean?

'Pit Senyor' is composed of two Cebuano words 'Pit' and 'Senyor'. The

word “senyor” is a title of respect given to males. In this instance, “Senyor”

or “Senior” refers to the Holy Child Senior Sto Nino de Cebu to whom the

feast is also dedicated.
