DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE
PALACE OF PLACES
If the city is like some large house and the house in turn like some small city, cannot the varied parts of the house be considered miniature build-ings?
Leon Battista Alberti, On the Art of Building in Ten Books, mid 15th century
In a small room one does not say what one would in a large room.
Louis I. Kahn, Architecture Comes from the Making of a Room, City/2, 1971 (Philadelphia Museum of Art)
“Diocletian’s palace: Palace of Places” has grown out from my master’s thesis: Integration of Urban Design and Conservation strategies for Diocletian’s palace in Split, I wrote at UC Berkeley, USA, in 2002. It was a logical synthesis of the years of ex-perience acquired by working for the Conserva-tion department in Split and education received at College of Environmental Design, UC Berkeley, two complementary sources which have defined my criteria of thinking about, evaluating and be-having in space. Most of the photographs in the book were taken by my dear friends Josipa Bilić, Duška Boban, Dubravka Čerina and Ana Perajica, and I can’t thank them enough.
