Udall Highlights N.M. Solutions for Gulf Coast Clean-up
Hearing Features U-Mate Proposal from NW Region
• WASHINGTON , DC, US Senate - July 21, 2010
• The Commerce Committee hearing, entitled "Turning Ideas into Action: Ensuring Effective Clean Up and Restoration in the Gulf," featured testimony from Gallup native Dennis Yellowhorse Jones.
• Yellowhorse Jones is the president of U-Mate International, a company that has submitted a proposal to remediate and restore the petroleum-contaminated shorelines of the Gulf with a substance called humate, which is mined near Gallup, N.M., on the Navajo Nation.with a substance called humate, which is mined near Gallup, N.M., on the Navajo Nation.
• Yellowhorse Jones testified before the committee that humate "is like a multiple vitamin for the soil." According to his company, the humate material binds to oil in soil and harbors naturally occurring microbes that biodegrade contamination.
• "It's environmentally safe, it's certified organic, it improves the soil structure and adds nutrients," he said.
• Yellowhorse Jones emphasized that his organization has been working very hard to gain the attention of the Coast Guard and BP to review their proposal, which is called the ‘Organic Solution.'
Oil Remediation Proposal – An
Organic Solution
We are proposing a solution for oil contamination along the Gulf
Coast where beaches, marshes and other lands by applying our
humate to the affected areas.
Our humate is a non-toxic, natural organic mineral that contains
60-90% humic and fulvic acids and other humic substances.
Our Company will solely utilize the expertise of the University of
Oklahoma to implement and control our solution, which includes
six applications of our humate tilled into the affected areas over a
one-year period, testing and modifying our initial concept for
maximum results for dollars spent.
Special to the Paradise Valley
Independent
Twenty Four-year Paradise Valley resident Dennis Yellowhorse Jones created a chart made of research between his company U-Mate International Inc. and Dr. Eric Loewen, President of the American Nuclear Society. Society.
U Mate is capable of assisting in containment of radiation on top of applications in soil remediation from oil, agriculture and pet and human nutrition.
The product is made from the mineral humate, which is organic material in the stage before becoming coal.

The conclusion:
• A small team at the Idaho National Engineering and
Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) and U-Mate
International Inc proposed a technical organic
solution to support Tank Focused Area (TFA) two solution to support Tank Focused Area (TFA) two
basic needs (tank lay-up and grout formulation)
using New Mex U-Mate. For tank lay-up, the team
proposed several feet of a stabilizing material called
New Mex U-Mate™ (NMUM) as furnished by U-
Mate International, Inc.
Proposed Humate Remediation ModelSorption and Enhanced Biodegradation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons
Petroleum Hydrocarbons
1. Rapid uptake of petroleum
hydrocarbons by humates
2. Biodegradation is initially slow
Humates
3. Slow desorption allows
biodegradation of hydrocarbons
to occur
CO2
& biomass
4. Some hydrocarbons remain
strongly sorbed to humates
and are not readily bioavailable
Microbes
What’s “Humate”?
• Highly heterogeneous mixture of lignite-like organic material,
along with small amounts of humin, clay, and silicates.
• Originates from the
diagenesis of
terrestrial, marine,
or lacustrine
organic matter.organic matter.
• 60 – 90% humic
and fulvic acids
• Est. U-Mate
reserves:
10 M tons
Unprocessed humate at mine located at
Gallup, New Mexico USA
• Application procedure- Mechanical incorporation into sediment (depth ~ 5 cm)- Application amount: 50 g humate/m2 (10 lb humate/1000 ft2)- Application rate: every 2 months for one year- Slow degradation sites: include lipophilic nutrients
Treatment MethodologyPetroleum contaminated shorelines
• Remediation monitoring strategy- Twenty sampling events;
over two years - Monitor sorption and
biodegradation processes- Identification of aqueous-soluble
compounds and adsorbed petroleum compounds
- Gas chromatography – mass spectrometry, pyrolysis GC/MS
