One person I always laugh ...... when I see him on T.V is Dave Allen.

V. Fill in each numbered blank with a suitable word. (2pts)

It is usually very hard to become familiar (1) ...... the culture of a foreign country. If you live a long (2) ...... in that country, you will find out how little you really know about (3) ...... culture. Books are often of little use (4) ...... they concentrate on differences between your own culture and (5) ...... of the foreign country. A lot of information they contain is (6) ...... correct. VI. Read the following passage and decide if the statements below are True (T) or False (F), according to the information given. (1pt)

Isn't it amazing how much time we spend talking about food? 'Have you ever eaten ...?', 'What did you have for lunch?' and so on. And yet when you travel from one country

2

to another, you find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and what others eat is strange or silly.

In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit that is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice or coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a large amount of beer and the French drink wine every day.

The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy raw fish.

So it seems that although eating is a topic that we can talk about for hours, there is little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always been eating, and there is little we can do to change our eating habits.

........ 1. The writer thinks that people often change their feelings about food.

tea or coffee The Boston Tea Party did more than just helped start a war. It helped change the habits and

taste of the North American people. It turned tea drinkers into coffee drinkers. Coffee and tea are both products of plants that grow in the tropics. When these beverages

were introduced in Europe during the 1600s, they became very profitable businesses. Coffee reached England before tea did, but once the English tasted tea, it became a favorite

mealtime drink. English people were soon buying about two pounds of tea leaves per person per year.

English people who went to North America as colonists took along their taste for tea. They preferred it to coffee until about 1773. In that year, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act, a law that helped to push the colonists into war against the mother country. Among colonists, tea became a symbol of unfair taxation and of England's attempts to control all trading with the colonies. The resentment of the colonists was so strong that once several groups of them boarded English ships in Boston Harbour and threw bales of tea into the ocean. After this 'Boston Tea Party' drinking tea was called unpatriotic by the colonists. They turned to coffee as their beverage.

Today tea is still the favourite drink in England. ON the other side of the Atlantic, things are different. The people of the United States drink about three times as many cups of coffee as cups of tea.

I thought I would let you to know how my summer holiday was in last week. When I got to the airport , I was told my flight would be delayed for at very least three hours. There was nothing to do but to wait. I felt very hungry but I could not buy anything to eat as I had run out of money. Time passed over slowly. After about two hours there was an announcement saying us that there would be a further delay of three hours and passengers on the flight could order a free meal in the cafe. I joined up a long queue and had just been being served when I heard another announcement telling the passengers that the flight was now be ready for boarding. I had to leave my meal and rush to the gate. There was another wait at the gate for half of an hour. But in the end my holiday ended happily.

II. Read carefully the passage and decide whether the following statements are true (T), false (F), or no information (NI) .(1 pt)

One of the lines from my favourite song goes this way: “Love is something you do, not what you talk”. Indeed, we often say that we love our families, but when was the last time you took the effort to make a cake for them or to sit down to talk to them? Do you take time to find out what has been happening in their lives? Most of the time, we would rather watch a movie or simply hang out at shopping centres with our friends than spend time with our family. People tend to take their families for granted because they have lived with them for their whole life. They do not feel the need to be considerate to their families, unlike being so to their friends. This is because their families would always accept and love them just as they are. It is usually when a person leaves his family that he realizes how important his family is to him. He will then appreciate the warmth and loving that a family gives.

SOME OF THE WORLD’S SMALLEST COUNTRIES

One of the smallest countries in the world is San Marino, a republic, high in the mountains of Italy. It is also oldest, because it was founded some 1,500 years ago. San Marino covers 61 square kilometres and has over 17 thousand people. San Marino coins and stamps are eagerly bought by collectors.

One of the popular small countries in the stamp album is Andorra, the mountain state of 11 thousand people which is high in the Pyrenees, between France and Spain. Anyone who collects the stamps of Andorra soon notices a strange thing about them. Some stamps are printed in Spain and have their values and inscriptions in Spanish. Other stamps are like French stamps. They have values in Francs or Centimes and their inscriptions is in French.

The reason for this lies in Andorra’s history. For nearly 700 years the little state has been under the joint protection of France and Spain, and these two countries have separate postal services in Andorra. In the chief village of Andorra the Spanish and the French post-offices stand near each other but sell different stamps.

Captain Cook

Captain James Cook was a famous explorer. He was the first European to visit many Pacific islands. He put these islands on maps of the world. James Cook was born in 1728. His parents were poor farm workers. James started to work on ships as a sailor when he was 18. When he was 27, he went into the navy. He fought in a war in Canada and made maps of some of the eastern coast there.

In 1768, the king of England sent him to explore the Pacific Ocean. Cook spent three years on that trip. He went to the Pacific again in 1772 and made maps of the coast of Australia and New Zealand. He also made Australia and New Zealand English colonies.

He began his third trip in 1776. This time he went to the North Pacific and made maps of the west coast of North America. When he finished making maps there, he went to Hawaii. Then the sailors and the Hawaiians started fighting, and some Hawaiians killed Captain Cook.

Captain Cook took gifts to the Pacific Islanders. He gave them cattle, sheep, goats, and new plants. He was also a very good leader of his men. When Captain Cook died, the world lost one of the greatest explorers in history.

THE GOLD RUSH It was January 1848. A man was digging near the small village of San Francisco, California. Suddenly, he saw something shiny-gold! By the next year the California gold rush had begun. Thousands of men came to California. They were called “ forty- miners,” after the year 1849. The forty- miners came from all around the United States. They even came from other countries, including Mexico, Australia, China, France, and England. They left their families and jobs, and made the difficult trip to California. They all shared a dream. They all wanted to make a fortune in gold. Towns and camps grew quickly wherever gold was found . These towns

33

were rough places. There was almost always a saloon, where the men drank whiskey and gambled at cards. In mining towns, men stole and sometimes skilled for gold. Did the miners make their fortune? Some did, especially those who came early and were lucky. In 1848, miners usually made about twenty dollars a day. In 1852 miners made about six dollars a day. Many other people came to California to make money from the miners. Prices were very high. A loaf of bread, which cost five cents in New York, cost almost a dollar in San Francisco. We are all slowly destroying the Earth. The seas and the rivers are too dirty to swim in. There is so much smoke in the air that it is unhealthy to live in many of the world’s cities. In one well- known city, for example, poisonous gases from cars pollute the air so much that traffic policemen have to wear oxygen masks. We have cut down so many trees that there are now vast areas of waste land all over the world. As a result, farmers in parts of Africa can not grow enough to eat. In certain countries in Asia there is too little rice. Moreover, we do not take enough care of the countryside. Wild animals are quickly disappearing. For instance, tigers are rare in India now because we have killed too many for them to survive. However, it isn’t enough simply to talk about the problem. We must act now before it is too late to do anything about it. Save the Earth.

She said that it was a mistake to blame the ‘box’ for everything. Real people had more influence on children than any characters they might see on TV. Mr. Parker agreed but added that children became more aggressive when watching TV. Parents should find out about the shows their children watch and perhaps offer suggestions. Once a month, the moon travels in a complete circle around the earth. And as it moves in its circle, it seems to change shape. This is because we on earth see only that section of the moon that catches the sun's light.

When the sun, the moon and the earth are in a straight line with the moon in the middle, it is impossible for us to see the moon. At this point, the moon is said to be new. We are unable to see it in this position because the side facing the earth is in shadow. As the new moon begins to circle the earth, however, we begin to see that part of its surface that catches the sun's light. After some days, it reaches the position where we can see a half moon. When it moves further around the position where the earth is between the sun and the moon, we see the full moon. A Teaspoonful of Honey

47

Our bodies produce heat, or energy, from the foods we eat. The energy-producing value of food is measured in calories. Some people count their calories as carefully as they count their money. They know that the calorie is the unit of measurement that influences weight. The number of calories a person needs each day depends upon age, body structure, and the kind of work one does. Calorie needs differ from one individual to another. Boys between the ages of 13 and 15 may need about 3100 calories a day. Girls of the same age usually need only about 2600 calories a day. People who do physical hard work may need as many as 4000 calories a day. The food a person eats in three, well-balanced meals each day usually provides all the energy-making calories needed. Sometimes individuals take in more calories than their bodies can use. Such extra calories are deposited in the body as fat. Those people who have stored too much fat, or wish to maintain the weight at which they feel and look their best, must carefully watch their intake of food. They must also count their calories. How surprised some of them are to find that a teaspoonful of honey contains 100 calories!

1- This reading as a whole tells us about ...... . a- what we should do if we are overweight b- a unit of energy: calorie c- counting your calorie d- energy from honey

2- From the reading we can understand or infer that ...... . a- nowadays people know the calorie values of food.

b- all men need more calories per day than women. c- different foods contain different amounts of calories. d- It is better to be overweight than underweight 3- Which sentence is not true?

a- A good weight for you is the weight at which you look and feel your best. b- A teaspoonful of honey contains 100 calories each day. c- All foods may be measured in calories. d- A calorie measures the temperature of the body 4- All boys and girls need to eat exactly the same amount of food every day.
