History

Pineapple originally grown in south of America and spread through theCentral America and goes to the West Indies by the native citizen Indian.

The words of pineapple is came from English language and first recorded in1398 that was originally used to describe reproductive organs from conifertrees and now become the name into pine cones.

In 1493 Europe explore Christopher Columbus was arrived in the island ofGuadeloupe, Caribbean region-America and he try the a piece of strangefruit that we know as the pineapple and after that he interest the fruit, brought it back returned to the Europe.

In 16th Centuries another explore from Magellan they find the pineapple inBrazil and has been exported from Gusto to England and become spread toIndia, Asia.

In 1770 United Kingdom – England Explorer Captain James Cook brought thepineapple to Hawaii.

In 1902 there is founder of the modern tropical fruit company by Byron O’Clark at Wahiawa Oahu, California. And he began developed a number ofcrops, including pineapples.

In 1903 pineapple become change into canning product or canning pineapplethis introduce by James Drummond Dole as we know the Dole food Company.

In 1922 James Dole has developed his company and he brought the land oflanai and build the biggest plantation of pineapple in the world.

(Map South America, 2015) (Map Brazil, 2000) (Map Europe with countries, 2011)

The pineapple originally come from south of America-Brazil, the historystart by local citizen Indian from the native land and spread through tosouth, central and west Indie. In 1493 Europe explore Christopher Columbustake the pineapple to Europe and continue by other explore and pineapplespread over the world.

ClimatePineapple grows in humid climate and warm temperature. The normal optimumtemperature growth pineapple is from 15°C -32°C. High temperature over 35°Cis not good for growth and development of fruit. (Land requirement forgrowing pineapple, 2013)

Soil Pineapple can grow in various types of soils even the poor soils. A goodsoils for the pineapple production are well aerated and sandy loams ,claynon-compacted and also free-draining loams, no heavy clay or rock and withthe optimal PH Soils 4.5-5.6 PH for pineapple production..(Land requirementfor growing pineapple, 2013)

Rainfall Due to the shallow fibrous root system the period of rainfall is moreimportant than the amount. Pineapple has a good drought tolerance. In area

Pineapple As Symbolize The Pineapple has been used as the symbol of hospitality since the dayearly due American colonies. The legend was started from The Captain NewEngland he is Captain John Smith and he was returned to colonies bearingcargo of fruit in year 1895. The fruit visual naturally become symbolizehigh spirit of social event, the image of pineapple expressing welcoming, warmth family. (Pineapple as symbol of hospitality, 2009)

The legend was continued until the present, and frequently we can saw thepineapple uses as the symbol of welcoming entering restaurants and hotels

CHANGE AGENT

In 1899 James Drummond Dole as known as “The Pineapple King of Hawaii”come to Hawaii for the first time and bought 61 acres of land in Wahiawa,Oahu, started his plantation marked beginning of the pineapple industryin year 1903, and he produce canning pineapple which made easier accessiblearound the world. (Pineapple fruit, 2008)

Mr. Dole is the big Change Agent for pineapple industry by introducing thecanning process to the world and now days most of the countries started toplantation pineapple because of higher profit.

How it change

Dole know that can be enormous market of pineapple product outside ofHawaii, and Dole think to uses the technology to distribute the product, sohigh technology process of canning food to preserve had been for a rounddecade, dole thought packing and sealing pineapple for long traveling itwas good idea that can keep the pineapple fresh and safe.

(About James Dole, Kathie fry, n.d)

Biotechnology GM Food or Genetically Modified is food produced from organisms that hasbeen specific change the DNA by using the method of genetic engineering, this technique allow to introduction new traits, greater control suchselective breeding also mutation breeding. The commercial product ofgenetically modified food starts in 1994 founded by John Francis Queeny.

John Francis Queeny is the founder of the Monsanto Company in St. Louis,Missouri 1901.

The change of this product because of the reason to be resistant to thepests, become more nutritious and to increase the yield of production butthe result of GMO pineapple being protest because GMO food was harmful tohuman health (what you need to know about GMO, 2013)

(Monsanto early 20th Centuries, n.d) (GMO pink pineapple, 2015)

Captain James Cook James Cook is the one person who are remarkable navigator and explore, hisexplore across the pacific and influence to astronomy, marine surveying, cartography, geography, natural history and also anthropology. James cookwas the first explore found the eastern Australia and New Zealand, and heis the first person bring and introduce the pineapple product in Australianand New Zealand after from Hawaii.

James cook is the who involved the pineapple product spread over the worldincluding New Zealand and now pineapple growth in New Zealand and Dolecompany in New Zealand. (Captain James Cook, n.d)

Innovation

Packaging

(pineapple packaging,2011) (the boxedfruit, n.d)

Past or old Packaging

In the past before to package the pineapple just using the bigboxes or styrofoam net and people just pick buyed and carryused plastic bag or carry the bigbox, but now in the present

13DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

it change have new innovation of packaging with colourful andwith picture design and easy to carry on.

(Image 1-3, Aloha, n.d)

New Packaging This innovation to the pineapple product packaging, the fruit nice coveredwith box and with hand carry so that easy for customers to hold and alsogood colour and design, and adding information the company or crops andalso give the history where pineapple grows and also adding type somerecipe from the product “ Pineapple Smoothie”. This is good innovation ideato appeal customers and increase sales product.

Farming

(Pineapple, 2013)

Non organic pineapple

14DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

In pass year ago agriculture use normal farming technique them usingpesticide to protect them farming from insect so the farming grows well nodamage to the plantation. If you see the physical there is no bites fromthe pests different with the organic you can see some of plantation havepests bites, but using pesticide is harmful to human health and you mustwash make sure to remove the pesticide before to used or consuming.

(Organic pineapple, 2010)

Organic PineappleWith traditional practice of organic agriculture that can help todevelopment of the region with ecological benefits. Because although usethe chemical or biotechnology in agriculture enhances yield there is stillhave negative effect to quality of life, damage environmental such soil, water and the atmosphere also risk to human health.

So the organic is the good innovation idea because this product isperfectly natural when farming no chemical no any biotechnology help theproduct grow. Now Days people worries about health, are the food themconsumed are contamination with chemical pesticide, now people looking forthe healthy food product and organic is right choice to get health life. With a lot of organic plantation or agriculture that give benefit increasethe Demand and get more income. (Organic pineapple, 2008)

Irrigation

15DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

(Surface irrigation 2010)

Surface irrigationSurface irrigation is the method of watery the agriculture which water isdistributed over the soil by following the gravity. Surface irrigation mustbe flat land and medium size which promote to spread water down acrossbasin. (Drainage and irrigation AEM, 2010)

This irrigation technique used in the past for every agriculture and now byfollowing the modern years there is more innovation for irrigation system“Air Drop Irrigation”

(Airdrop irrigation, 2011) (Airdrop2011)

Air drop IrrigationIn the future people concern about the global warming, extreme weather ,bad climate and less of rain fall that impact the agriculture in brazil thebiggest production of pineapple ,many pineapple farmer worries about theglobal warming because fear of less water supply and less rainfall but nowthere is new irrigation innovation for plantation. Airdrop Irrigationsystem is a good innovation idea to keep plantation have enough water

16DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

supply and keep growth well. The Airdrop Irrigation is functionallygenerated the water from the air into ground and the water flow into thetank that already setup under soil and pumped out from piped subsurfaceinto drip irrigation. (Air drop irrigation, 2011)

USES

(Pineapple enzyme superior, 2011)

Pineapple benefits for health

There is many benefits from the pineapple fruit, pineapple containing highvitamin A, C, B and manganese also dietary fibre and bromelain. Manganesewhich used for the Antioxidant protection, and vitamin A, B are used forinvolved energy production in human body. The bromelain are uses to helptreat the cancer and also decreases osteoarthritic pain that people gotarthritis, gout, joint pain and chronic inflammation.(Pineapple health benefits and risk, nutrition fact, 2014)

In past years ago many people eat the pineapple for keep them healthy theyjust buy the fruit and cutting by them self and eat fresh and now dayschange by following progress of times, people have canning pineapple, juicepineapple, the fruit mixed into dishes, such salad and modern pineapplemade into supplement capsule, pills.

Canning Slice Pineapple

This the convenience product of pineapplethat already prepare that can be used for making other food product, suchdessert, cuisine and also

18DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

can be used for people who they do traveling or long trip they canbring the canning pineapple product (Dole pineapple, n.d)

Dried Pineapple Many type of cutting of dried pineapple there are chunks, sliced rings and diced. It’s often treated by using sulphur dioxide for colouring that help to retain appealing yellow colour without sulphur dioxide the dried pineapple will turn into brown and can’t beused. The dried pineapple

we know used as food such sweet snack coating with sugar. (Dried pineapple, n.d) (Dry pineapple, 2002)

Pineapple Powder Pineapple Powder is also a wonderful sourcefor natural colour and adds a sharp taste or flavour to the food such dessert, base ingredient to make the sauce or jam.(Dried custard pineapple powder, n.d)

Technique

Washing ProcessThis machine used for process washing the pineapple to cleanfrom soil or mud that stick on surface of the pineapple skinbefore entering to cutting and coring process.

This process technique is very important because for thehygiene procedure and keep machine secure because without

washing process the material such soil and mud will stick on to machine andnot hygiene and will damage the machine and will costly money to fix or buynew machine.

Cutting and coring machine This machine is automatically peeling and coring process, usedto remove the skin of pineapple and remove core of pineapple. This technique is very important because for canning pineapplethey can put the skin into the can so must to remove the skinand also remove the core because is not used and can’t beeaten and also already sliced that make easy for the customers

not to slice again directly used this product.

Checking process This manual checking by the labour to make sure surface of pineapple are clean before input into the can or canning process. This process technique is very importantbecause to check there is no material such skin and soil still stick on in pineapple it’sfor food safety procedure for good quality product

Process input to cans Processing input the pineapple has been cutting and check weight each can.

21DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

this technique is very important because to make sure all can must have the same weight, and standard quality of the product.

Sealing machine This machine automatically for processingseal the can, this technique is very important because to keep the product in safe and fresh not oxidant that make the product change to brown and not good to used again.

Resource

Land for planting Prepared the soil (Land) for planting and tilled the soil with the tractorand spread the pineapple seeds to area planting .build good water drainagefor watering control to make sure the pineapple enough water to growthwell. The size of land must be large scale and flat land also near by therivers that need to have irrigation system

(Pineapples, 2012)

Power Power is the important resource due production process from farming andharvesting until end production such energy for operate the tractor andoperate the conveyor belt and operated production machine such washingmachine, pealing machine, canning machine , packaging machine.

The power come from the electricity power plants (water, steam, winds, solar, nuclear), biofuel power generator

(Termal power plant, n.d)(alternative energy economic, 2012)

Water

Water is the one of resource that need in life and every production, waterusing to supply irrigation to make the plantation grow well and water usingin process washing machine to clean the pineapple product before process topealing and canning product and water also used for the labour or workerwash them hand before and after do job for food safety requirement. Andwater as the main resource for the power to operate the generator.

The water come from rivers, ground water, sea, mountain streams, rain fall.

Future trends

Genetically modified In the future many crops using the genetically modified to increase yieldproduction such company Dole Monte pineapple from the dole food company wasstarting use the genetically modified into them product but this so bad forhuman health and also damage for environmental so in the future will stopthe genetically modified and more produce the organic pineapple, morehealthy in future people looks the organic food.

To apply the organic produce fix the problem by educating to know about howdangerous effect using the GMO food and educating know about the organicwhat the benefit using the organic for human and environmental. Which needsupport from government to realize

Global warming In the future global warming will increase the temperature in the earthwhich very good for pineapple agriculture because pineapple used heat togrown well but other side global warming very bad to human life globalwarming changes environmental around the world so in the future we have toreduce this happen by using natural energy such biofuel or bioethanol whichusing the pineapple product as the resource from wasted pineapple thatcontaining high cellulose and hemicellulose to make bioenergy. And in thefuture demand for fuel will increase because the natural resource oil, petroleum will gone the best thing is to created renewable energy is atrend for the future.

.

Labours & machinery in the future all industry will used technology high tech machinery inproducing the product one of them is pineapple production that usingtechnology this will happen impact to people or labours lost them jobs allmachinery technology will take over them jobs so to solve this problem inthe future we need to educated or giving the education to people.Agriculture training such organics horticulture

Organic horticulture is combination of science and art of the growingfruits other farming which following by the principles of organichorticulture in field, conservation and pest management. Horticulture can

25DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

be defined as the culture of garden plants and this also useful for humanlabours, gardener’s tools and also the machinery such rotary tillers.

(Genetically modified organism, 2014)

(stop global warming, n.d)

Application Organic production

In the future government must be supporting to the organic productionby protecting the traditional farmers and monitoring the crops whereusing the GMO and stop them to produce so there is no gm and to bebetter with the organic because Organic is natural were the productgrow no genetically modified, no chemical additive, it good for life.Specially organic pineapple.

(organic pineapple, 2010)(organic, 2014)

Bioethanol26

DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

This technique will become more efficiency in the future it is aclean energy and low-carbon biofuel, which will lead the renewableenergy for industry. In future, the usage of oil will decrease andthe ethanol will increase, which can help reduce air pollution andreduce gas emissions and stop the global warming. Related topineapple industry where the production needs energy as the resourceto operating the production system such truck, canning pineapplemachine all machinery to created product and in the future likepetroleum will gone , to keep sustainability production needrenewable source energy which using the waste of pineapple productby fermentation such the skin, core of pineapple that not used beprocessed into source energy that we know as the Bioethanol orBiofuel.

(Bioethanol, n.d )

Education

In the future we entering to new modern world with high technologyall human activities will be changes by the technology machinerypeople worries losing the job in the future, but in the future peoplewill get more job there is more labours, education is the waysupporting human resource to ready prepare for the changes, whicheducation give knowledge about the new technology ,machinery where behelp supporting them works more better in the future, pineappleproduction will using the high technology to increase the demand.

27DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

In New Zealand there is a National Multi private training PGGWrightson has provide qualifications and approved training courseslevel 1 to 6 NZQA in here them teach the organics horticulture howto applied organics and riparian’s vegetation, introduced ruralskill, agriculture training and future farmers

Technology

Science

Genetically Modified

Positive

Genetically modified is the big issue, many crops using thistechnology for improving the plant’s resistant to pests, increaseproduction yield, and also reduced maturation time, and thepineapple is one of food product being genetically modified it isintended for product keep look fresh and longer period time toincrease life, genetically modified were provide number ofecological benefit that help solved environmental problems suchglobal warming, less rainfalls with this technology plant’s keepsurvive.

Negative

Using genetically modified not all be good it’s have bad side effectwhich can harmful to human health such cancer, other illness andalso bad for environmental risk to the soil and water contaminationwith the biochemical.

Health

Pesticide

Positive Using the pesticide effective against pests and also protectingfrom insects and rodents, and pesticide prevent spread disease and protect from infections. So the plantation will grow well

Negative Using the pesticide has bad effect to human health can get serious problem like brain cancer, leukaemia and also risk to

28DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

pregnant woman ,damages to nervous system and lungs, also can bad effect to environmental pollute the air, water, soil.

Labours & machinery

Manual and Industry

Positive in Thailand they still using manual when do plantation theystill use traditional way more use labours to work in feelusing hand to pick up when harvesting the positive they don’thave operational cost for machinery such energy (fuel) becausethey don’t use truck. but in USA –Brazil the biggest production they using a lot oftechnology machinery that help in production the positive byusing machinery technology save time and more increaseproduction low cost for the labours because they don’t needmuch labours.

Negative Using the traditional way need more cost for paid the laboursand less the production , with the technology or machinery willmore high cost for operational the machine such fuel, electrical, maintenance cost for the machine also the labourthat operate the machine.

Science Bioethanol

Positive

The biotechnology will change the wasted pineapple productionsuch peel pineapple skin and the core of pineapple into theethanol as the biofuel. These produced hydrolysis cellulose andhemicellulose that contain in wastage of pineapple, theproduced ethanol work by fermentation. There samples forfermentation. Left the pineapple juice for one week to reducesugar that obtained from hydrolyse process cellulose pineapplepeel. Fermentation from the hydrolysed cellulose with 0.1 M

29DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

Sulphuric Acid have high contain of ethanol. (Extraction of BioEthanol from Pre-treated Pineapple, 2012)

Negative

Using the bioethanol concern about the price because bioethanolis very expensive, using bioethanol or biofuel will increasefood price

Social Influence

Positive In the future people looking for the healthy fresh fruit so that why infuture will be increase the demand of pineapple product specially theorganic pineapple, and will more land for plantation to produce the organicpineapple, therefore to occupy the demand product that will need moreworkforce or labours.

(Increased executive search demand, 2012) (Pineapple republic,2012)

Negative In the future by exploit technology such machinery will take over allpeople job and people will lost them job because them skill not usesanymore because machine only one touch button already works multitaskingsuch human did which the technology still need people to operated but theyjust monitoring the machine so by technology less labours and less paid forthe skill.

(Jobless, 2009)

30DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

Resource Global warming is bad condition for human life, it changes a lot for peoplelife but other side global warming it might be positive for pineappleproduction, pineapple need to plant in tropical and subtropical regions, the increasing temperature is good to growing the pineapple plantationaround the world people will more find land to grow it .

(Effect global warming, 2009)Air drop irrigation is new innovation technology which can supply waterand energy in plating pineapple and generated the water from the air intoground and the water flow into the tank that setup under soil and pumpedout from piped subsurface into drip irrigation. This method can increasethe pineapple production. (Air drop irrigation, 2011)

(Airdrop 2011)

Conclusion

During the research, I learned knowledge about the pineapple from threetimes, past, present and future. The history of pineapple is extremelylong, go back to 13 centuries to find its first official record; the greatpeople in world history such as James Cook, John smith Christopher Columbusas a change agent to make history and spread pineapples to worldwide, the

31DDCKYJAN15 CYLVAN HARTANTO 39135 PINEAPPLE

future technology used in planting and manufacturing which change the wholepineapples production; and the future trends and social influence can helpto understand what can be happen and what should we do facing the future.

The most interesting thing I learn from research about pineapple isspreading route to the world. I like history, through pass years ago, pineapple spread from South America to Europe, middle East and becomereach the new world, substitutions of the pineapple product have to bedeveloped, and the modern technology Ethanol will help the industry tochange the wastage from pineapple product as good resource it used tobiofuel as a renewable clean energy.

My research can benefit lots of people. For example, the chefs can make newrecipes by using pineapple as ingredient. And can give information to thefarmers , they will know about new technology of planting pineapple to bemore better and they have knowledge about the future so they will readyfor facing future. What they have to do.
