Student SpeakerOliver Elias TinocoOliver Elias Tinoco is a scholar and student leader at Skyline College. From being president of Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) as well a leader in FIRE (Fighting for Immigrant Rights and Equity), Oliver strives to fulfill Skyline College’s message of diversity and inclusion. He hopes that his journey in higher education will inspire to bring more queer, brown voices to pursue their dreams.

Eloisa M. BrionEs, B.s., CPaVice President of Administrative ServicesYears of Service: 1994-2021
Eloisa M. Briones served as the Vice President, Administrative Services and Chief Budget Officer for over 21 years at Skyline College. She was responsible for providing administrative leadership and oversight in all areas of Finance, Budget & Operations, Human Resources, Facilities and Capital Improvements, Transportation and Public Safety on the college campus. Eloisa served as a member of the President’s Executive Leadership Council and various governance committees at the college as well as districtwide. She co-chaired the Strategic Planning and Resources and Allocation Committee and the Health, Safety & Emergency Preparedness Committee. Eloisa gained extensive experience in community college finance and operations for over 25 years. She shared her expertise as a team evaluator for several accreditation site visits within the state of California and in Hawaii. Eloisa earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accountancy degree from the University of the Philippines. She is a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of the Association of Chief Business Officials (ACBO), the American Council of Community College Administrators (ACCCA), and the National Asian Pacific Islander Council (NAPIC).
Eloisa retired from Skyline College on December 31, 2021 and is remembered fondly by her colleagues on campus and throughout the district and state. She was and continues to be a valued resource to the college and our students. She is missed by all and her legacy as a capable administrator, strong advocate and compassionate leader keeps her in our hearts and minds every day.

GEorGE BuCkinGhaM, a.a., B.a., M.a.Professor of HistoryYears of Service: 1981-2021
Professor George Buckingham served as a History Faculty at Skyline College from 1981-2021. Professor Buckingham had a deep commitment to his students and their educational journey and enjoyed teaching for 40 years. He has an AA from College of Alameda, a BA from University of California, Berkeley, and a MA from Hayward State University.
George loved history, but his most favorite was the history of the West. He taught primarily California history, and Western Civilization for much of his time at Skyline. George collected old firearms, and enjoyed visiting gold mining towns, especially up near Sonora. In retirement, George will have more time to explore his passion of reading, and visiting historic places in the western United States.
aliCE ErskinE, Msn, rn, Cnor, CsTProgram Director, Surgical Technology ProgramChair, Surgical Careers DepartmentYears of Service: 1992-2022
After 20-plus years practicing as, first, a surgical technologist and then as a perioperative nurse, Professor Alice Erskine was lured to teach the surgical technology program. At the time, Skyline had no space for the program and contracted with the Hospital Consortium of San Mateo County to provide a classroom across the street from Peninsula Hospital. Then, in 1999, a Work-Force grant provided funds to build a portable classroom to accommodate a lab and to purchase surgical equipment. Another grant in 2012 created the Surgical Careers Center in Building 7 where Professor Erskine was able to recruit faculty to teach a new Central Service Tech Program and then in 2018, the Anesthesia Technology Program.
Professor Erskine is proud of the more than 400 graduates of the surgical tech program who now serve in hospitals all over Northern California. She is thankful for all the support of many deans and instructors at Skyline, and the collaboration of many operating room managers and educators.
Shortly after retiring, Professor Erskine plans to move to the Seattle area to be closer to family. She is eager to continue biking, as well as volunteering at an animal shelter, tutoring at a local college, and traveling.

iMElda hErMosillo, B.a., M.P.a.CounselorYears of Service: 1999-2022
Imelda began her college studies at Fullerton College in Orange County, California. She earned a Bachelor of Arts, in Social Ecology, from the University of California, Irvine and a Masters of Arts in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. As is true for many students, she worked full time throughout her college studies. She is Mexican, a first-generation college graduate, a native Californian. Her parents were from Sonora, Mexico and Arizona. Throughout her life, Imelda has valued and been interested in the intersection of human development and community development, the power of the arts to inform and heal, and the imperative to work towards social justice in whatever role we choose.
For 40 years, Imelda has worked for student advancement and success across many branches of higher education. Before joining the San Mateo Community College District in 1999, she served as the EOPS Director at Hartnell College for 9 years. Prior to Hartnell, Imelda worked in student services at UC Irvine and as an admissions officer at the University of Southern California. It was in this role at USC that she saw the vast differences in curriculum across California high schools. This awareness was the turning point to commit to work for students at the Community College level.
At Skyline College, Imelda served in EOPS and General Counseling. She was a Puente Counselor and a mentor. She has served as a member of the Educational Policy Committee, the Curriculum Committee, the Stewardship for Equity, Equal Employment and Diversity (SEEED) Advisory Committee and the Professional Development Committee.
Imelda asks to a give a shout out to the Skyline College community:I am most grateful for the students who have shared their life stories, intelligence, creativity and educational goals. My interest is always in the abiding narrative of students’ lives of resilience, courage and joyfulness, too often in the face of inexplicable inequities. Students, we see you, we witness your many gifts as they unfold.
I am also grateful that I have played a part in supporting many colleagues. My colleagues have given so much support on every level. I will carry them close to my heart , not only for their counseling, teaching and for the legacies they create, but for who they are and for the countless daily acts of generosity and solidarity we shared. The individuals of the Skyline College community are genuinely beautiful, powerful and rare.

linda WhiTTEn, B.a., M.B.a.Professor and Coordinator of AccountingYears of service: 1979-2022
Professor Linda Whitten began teaching accounting at Skyline College in 1979 after completing a MBA in Accounting from San Francisco State University. During her years as an adjunct, she also taught at the College of San Mateo. After retiring from SFSU, she became a full-time faculty at Skyline College. As a full-time faculty, she has served on the Academic Senate, Skyline College and District Budget Committees, Strategic Planning, and Educational Policy. She also worked to accredit the Business Program. Professor Whitten has served as the faculty advisor for the business Honor Society, Kappa Beta Delta for the last 10 years and now serves as the President of Kappa Beta Delta International. She is also the faculty advisor for Alpha Gamma Sigma, the California Community College Honor Society.
After 45 years of teaching, Professor Whitten plans on spending more time with her grandchildren and gardening, and spending time at her cabin in Tahoe, and perhaps travel.
soodi ZaMani, B.A., M.A.Professor of MathematicsYears of Service: 1993-2021
Professor Soodi Zamani started as Math Faculty at Skyline College in 1993 and was with Skyline serving as a full-time faculty for 28 years. Professor Zamani has always been passionate about helping students, but equally about helping and collaborating with colleagues. Professor Zamani’s colleagues describe her as having a tireless work ethic and recall her bringing a stack of grading to a meeting, a party, or at her kids’ soccer game. Professor Zamani arrived to work at 6:00 am daily, always eager to grade and create lesson plans for her 8:00 am class. While she loved teaching all Math classes, Calculus was her passion. Soodi served as a role model for many students, particularly immigrant and international students.
In her retirement, Soodi is able to spend time with her two sons (both of whom are engineers) and her 4-year-old grandchild.

BarBara laMson, a.s., CErTifiCaTE in aCCounTinGFinancial Analyst – SMCCCD/Skyline CollegeYears of Service: 1999-2021
Barbara Lamson retired from SMCCCD/Skyline College on December 30, 2021, following a twenty-two year career with the community college. Her career with the District started in August of 1999, when she began at Skyline College working with a state grant program called the Center for International Trade Development. During the eight years working with this program, she was responsible for the grant purchasing, accounting and reporting, as well as coordinating many work-shops, conferences, and international trade missions. The clients were Bay Area entrepreneurs that wanted to take their companies and products into the international market. One of her favorite trips was a trade mission to Mexico, for women entrepreneurs. Former State Senator Jackie Speier led the group connecting women in business, with similar international trade goals.
In May of 2007, she transferred to the Skyline College Administrative Services Department, to become the College’s Financial Analyst. She was responsible for many of Skyline’s accounting functions; she became a vital part of the fiscal operations. One of her main focuses was on the grant and categorical programs awarded to the college. It was her responsibility to oversee the accounting for awards, as well as ensuring accurate reporting. Her knowledge of the College’s fiscal processes made her an excellent trainer for the Skyline employees. Her patience and helpfulness were greatly appreciated. She held positions on a number of College and District Committees.
Prior to her work at Skyline College, she worked in the private sector, in the accounting field. She is the mother of three and now has four grandchildren. She is enjoying her retirement, staying active in the community through scouting and youth sports. Scholastic HonorsRecognition of student academic excellence is based on the graduate’s grade point average according to the following scale:
Phi Theta Kappa (FQK)
Beta Theta Omicron is Skyline College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. A grade point average of 3.5 or higher is required to participate in the program. For more information about Phi Theta Kappa, please refer to www.skylinecollege.edu/boo.
Kappa Beta Delta (KBΔ)
Kappa Beta Delta recognizes and honors students who have distinguished themselves within the Business Administration program at Skyline College. To be considered for membership, candidates must meet the minimum requirements of 15 credit hours completed and be in the top 20 percent of their business classes.
Honors Transfer Program (HTP)
The Skyline College Honors Transfer Program provides enhanced transfer and educational opportunities for students who seek a challenging academic experience as well as intellectual and personal growth. Graduates of the program have completed at least 15 units of honors courses with a GPA of at least 3.25 and 16 hours of community service.

Academic RegaliaThe caps and gowns worn by Skyline College graduates in today’s ceremony carry a strong environmental story while preserving the elegance and tradition of graduation. The acetate fabric fiber is made from natural wood sourced exclusively from renewable managed forests. This fabric is proven to decompose in soil. The gown contains an Eco-ZipTM coil zipper with tape and teeth made from 100% recycled PET. Additionally, the cap and gown are packaged in earth-friendly materials. The purchase of this gown offers graduates an opportunity to give back to the environment by responding to Jostens. For every response received, Jostens will donate $1 to an environmental sustainability project.
Students may choose to wear stoles and cords that designate that they have successfully completed the requirements of different academic programs, learning communities, leadership programs, scholastic honors, student support programs and transfer. Stoles and cords come in a wide range of styles and colors.
Colors and styles worn by individuals in the academic ceremony designate the field in which the highest degree was earned and the institution granting it.
Baccalaureate degree holders wear plain black mortarboards and gowns. Master’s gowns have pointed sleeves. Doctoral gowns have round, open sleeves and are faced down the front and across the sleeves with velvet.
Hoods are worn over the gowns. Bachelor’s hoods are three feet in length. Master’s hoods are 3½ feet long and Doctoral hoods are four feet long with panels at the side.
The inside of the hood or lining is the official color of the institution granting the degree. The color of the outside of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was received. Some of the most common colors are as follows: arts and letters, white; business and commerce, drab; economics, copper; journalism, crimson; music, pink; philosophy, dark blue; physical education, sage green; and science, golden yellow.
