Glenn Youngkin Governor of Virginia

Gov. Glenn Youngkin is a homegrown Virginian who grew up in Richmond and Virginia Beach. As his father changed jobs, Youngkin learned that moving around didn’t equal moving up—nothing was handed to him. From his first job washing dishes and frying eggs at a diner in Virginia Beach, he embraced hard work and responsibility to help his family when his father lost his job. His determination to succeed earned him multiple high school basketball honors in Virginia and an athletic college scholarship.

After earning an engineering degree at Rice University, and his MBA at Harvard Business School, Youngkin and his wife Suzanne moved to Northern Virginia. He landed a job at The Carlyle Group, where he spent the next 25 years. Working his way to the top of the company, he played a key role in building Carlyle into one of the leading investment firms in the world. His efforts have helped fund the retirements of teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other frontline public servants and supported hundreds of thousands of American jobs.

Married for over 27 years to his amazing wife, Suzanne, Youngkin is a dedicated father of four wonderful children. Their family journey has been and continues to be guided by their faith.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

Winsome Earle-Sears Lieutenant Governor of Virginia

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, immigrated to the United States at the age of six. She is proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps. In addition to her various appointments, she has served as the vice president of the Virginia State Board of Education and a presidential appointee to the U.S. Census Bureau as co-chair of the African American Committee and the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Earle-Sears was first elected in 2002 to a majority-black House of Delegates district, a first for a Republican in Virginia since 1865. She is the first female lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the first Black female elected to statewide office.

A former program manager for the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and VISTA volunteer, Earle-Sears is a trained electrician and successful businesswoman. She holds a B.A. in English with a Minor in Economics, and an M.A. in Organizational Leadership, with a concentration in Government. However, she is most proud of her community work leading a men’s prison ministry and as director of a women’s homeless shelter.

Earle-Sears and her husband, Terence, have two daughters, Katia and Janel, in addition to DeJon, and granddaughters Victoria and Faith, who are now looking into the face of God.

The wearing of academic regalia dates back to the 12th century and has been a tradition in American academic institutions since the Colonial days. The associate and bachelor’s gowns worn in traditional ceremonies fall in a straight line and have pointed sleeves. The long black master’s and doctoral gowns are similar except for the sleeves, which are oblong on the master’s gown and bell-shaped on the doctoral gown. The doctoral gown also has velvet trimmings on the front and sleeves, with the three bars signifying the number of degrees of the graduate. Several institutions have elected to change the graduate gown color to their official school colors in recent years.

Graduates’ hoods are lined with colors representing the degree-granting institution (e.g., blue and green for Regent University) and edged in colors representing the degree, major or discipline (other than Ph.D.s, which are all royal blue):

Crimson ........................................................... Communication, Journalism

Brown .............................................................. Fine Arts

Royal Blue ...................................................... Leadership Studies, Doctor of Philosophy

Scarlet ............................................................. Divinity

White ................................................................ Counseling

Purple .............................................................. Law

Drab ..................................................................Business

Light Blue ....................................................... Education

Apricot ............................................................. Nursing

Peacock Blue ................................................ Government

Gold .................................................................. Cybersecurity, Doctor of Psychology

These strangely shaped hoods originally served the practical purpose of helping medieval scholars keep their heads warm while they worked in unheated university buildings. The most common master’s and bachelor’s cap is the four-cornered mortarboard. Doctoral candidates wear the traditional six-sided tam.

Red, white and blue honor cords are awarded to active-duty and honorably discharged veterans of our nation’s military service branches. We salute these servicemen and women for their academic achievements and duty and sacrifice to our country.

Gold honor stoles are awarded to those recognized as recipients of Latin honors. Other cords are bestowed to members of one of the following academic honor societies: Alpha Epsilon Delta, Alpha Phi Sigma, Alpha Psi Omega, Chi Sigma Iota, Kappa Delta Pi, Lambda Pi Eta, Phi Alpha Delta, Pi Sigma Alpha, Psi Chi, and Sigma Tau Delta. Student Government leaders also wear cords with the Regent colors of royal blue and green.

The Honors College graduates receive a bronze medallion secured by a blue and green ribbon. Students admitted to the Honors College have an exceptional academic and extracurricular performance resume in high school and must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA while completing a rigorous core curriculum taught over four years.

The gold pin embossed with the Regent shield signifies graduates who have advanced the university’s mission through encouraging stewardship opportunities, leadership, and outreach as members of the Student Alumni Ambassadors organization.

Classroom Building - The University’s First Building

32

Regent’s Remarkable HistoryDr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson, the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) founder, had a vision of establishing a graduate-level institution to train Christian leaders to influence the world. Robertson’s vision materialized in 1977: 70 acres of land in Virginia Beach were cleared, and the foundation was poured for the university’s first building. A year later, 77 students began classes in rented facilities nearby. A decade later, enrollment grew to 800 students as word spread of the nation’s first freestanding graduate school dedicated to applying the truth of Scripture to rigorous academic instruction. In 1990, the institution’s name changed from CBN University to Regent University. A “regent” is defined as one who represents a king in his absence; it was selected to advance the unique Christian mission. The university has since expanded from its Communication & the Arts discipline to encompass other fields of influence, including:• 1980 – School of Education (SOE) • 1982 – School of Business (BUS) | School of Divinity (SOD) • 1983 – Robertson School of Government (RSG)• 1986 – School of Law (LAW)• 1988 – School of Psychology & Counseling (SPC) • 1995 – School of Leadership Studies (SLS) | First Online Degree Offered• 2000 – Undergraduate Degree Completion Program (UDCP) • 2004 – School of Undergraduate Studies (SUS) – Formerly UDCP• 2006 – School of Business & Leadership (SBL) – BUS and SLS merged• 2008 – Associate Degree Program (ADP) – First associate degree offered• 2012 – College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) – Developed out of the SUS• 2018 – College of Healthcare Sciences (CHS) | School of Nursing (SON)• 2020 – Honors College (HC)• 2021 – College of Health & Behavioral Sciences (CHBS) – Houses SPC, SON,

School of Allied Health (Formerly Dept. of Healthcare Management)

AccreditationsBy 1992, the university had received three important accreditations: • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)

• Association of Theological Schools (ATS)• American Bar Association (ABA)

By 2002, the School of Psychology & Counseling was accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). In 2007, Regent became the first university in the nation to receive CACREP accreditation for an online doctoral program in counselor education and supervision.

In 2009, the School of Education’s educational leadership and teacher preparation programs received accreditation from—what is now—the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP); the College of Arts & Science’s secondary licensure tracks and interdisciplinary studies programs have since been awarded this accreditation. Other important accreditations and designations include (regent.edu/accreditation):

• Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)• Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)• National Security Agency (NSA)• Department of Homeland Security (DHS)• State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV)

From the Campus to the WorldWith its roots in traditional on-campus academic programs, Regent expanded into the then-frontier of distance education in 1989 with an MBA degree offered through videotapes, audiotapes and study guides. In 1995, the first online degree (Ph.D. in Communication) was offered, and the School of Leadership Studies was founded as a distance-only graduate education program, becoming a model for online graduate education worldwide. In 2006, the leadership and business schools merged to enhance the university’s impact. In 2000, Regent expanded its focus on developing leaders of character through its undergraduate reach. Today, the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) offers comprehensive liberal arts and rigorous life science programs globally with distinctive faith-based integration. The college provides associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees for on-campus and online students. In 2014, CAS introduced the biophysical sciences program, ushering in new opportunities for future Christian scientists grounded in ethics and humanities. Since then, the college has launched in-demand degrees in cybersecurity, nursing, engineering, business analytics, marketing, animation, graphic arts, music, biblical/theological studies, and more. Regent’s graduate schools have expanded also. Over the past few years, the schools have launched marketable degree programs, such as apologetics/cosmogony, church planting, online ministry, campaign/political leadership, human services, international development, television/video production, and health information systems administration, plus master’s-level nursing degrees.

Preparing for the FutureStarting in 2002, Regent expanded its campus with the addition of several new buildings: the Communication & Performing Arts Center—one of the most technologically advanced educational facilities on the East Coast; the Student Center and Cafe Moka; and the beautiful Regent

Commons, which provides furnished on-campus student residences. March 2013 marked the opening of what is now Shaw Chapel and the Divinity Building & Welcome Center, which serve as the centerpiece of campus life, emphasizing God’s presence within the Regent community. In 2017, Regent announced its new athletics team name, Regent Royals, derived from 1 Peter 2:9. Two years later, the university launched Grace Community Law Clinic in downtown Norfolk, with a primary mission to effectively provide pro bono legal aid to the Hampton Roads community. In 2020, Regent Law unveiled the Robertson Center for Constitutional Law, which is helping to advance first principles in constitutional law, including textualism, freedom of speech, separation of powers, federalism, judicial modesty, and religious liberty.

Regent has gained the attention of Christian scholars, political figures, and international heads of state. Earlier this year, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Samuel A. Alito Jr. instructed Regent law students during a special jurisprudence seminar. Last year, former U.S. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann was named dean of the Robertson School of Government. In 2019, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina Mark Martin was named dean of the School of Law. Other distinguished faculty include former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and the Honorable Ken Starr, retired judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Likewise, Regent is advancing its mission as the center of Christian thought and action through the Honors College, which was launched in 2020. Here, high-achieving students are prepared intellectually, spiritually and socially to do noble things in a world that too often accepts mediocrity. Drawing from God’s Word, prominent thinkers, and great books, the Honors College offers a challenging curriculum and collaborative environment to foster the knowledge, character and skills to create and implement godly solutions to stubborn, real-world problems.

Today, Regent offers more than 150 areas of study that prepare students with the skills employers seek. With more than 11,000 students studying on campus and online, Regent students represent all 50 states and 64 countries. Regent has prepared over 31,000 alumni to succeed in their careers and make a positive difference in the world.

REGENT, HOST OF FAITH AND LEARNING

Words by The Honorable John D. Ashcroft

Regent host of faith and reasonFramed in God’s own law and grace

As we meditate and studyHe instructs us for life’s race;Vision of God’s pure intention

Sacrifice to make it liveFellowship in His creation

God inspires our hearts to give.

As we turn our face toward heavenGod directs our hands to need. When we kneel to make petitionHe endows so we can lead.Integrating faith and learningSpirit, body, mind for Thee

Regent working for the KingdomNow and for eternity.

Workers ever in His KingdomNow and in eternity.

Society of the crown and Shield

This elite society, established in 2016, honors Regent benefactors who have given $1 million or more over their lifetime. Through their generosity, this exclusive group has demonstrated

an extraordinary passion for and commitment to the mission of Regent University. It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge these faithful friends who have chosen to honor

God by giving from their abundance to further His kingdom here on earth.

History of tHe Crown and sHieldThe visual image of Regent University plays an integral role in communicating the institution’s purpose

and integrity. When we adopted our name, Regent University, in January of 1990, every effort was made to blend significant elements of CBN University’s brief history with emblems relevant to our faith and historic

surroundings. The Society of the Crown and Shield draws its name from two integral elements of our heraldic crest. The crown represents the King whom we serve, Jesus Christ. The shield, in both educational

circles and in the fellowship of believers, signifies the shield of faith and protection.
