Alexander Zverev

In anticipation of the 2022 BNP Paribas Open, fansshould expect the unexpected.

As fans, media members, patrons and professionals prepare forthe first March edition of the BNP Paribas Open since 2019—set tobe held from March 7 to March 20—two names will especiallystand out: Alexander Zverev and Garbiñe Muguruza.

After all, Zverev won the 2021 ATP Finals (his second victoryin the championship and 19th in ATP singles tournaments), whileMuguruza claimed the 2021 WTA Finals (her 13th WTA singlestitle, an aggregate that includes two major championships).

In response to his victory over Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4,Zverev focused on the present, while also looking ahead to thefuture.

“I won against a player I lost five times to in a row, so I had to playone of my best matches,” he said. “I’m happy about that [and] happyto be going on holidays with this win.”

He continued, “There’s no better way to end the season thanwinning here. I’m obviously happy, but I’m also very much lookingforward to next year already.”

Meanwhile, Muguruza became the first Spaniard to ever winthe WTA Finals.

“I didn’t think of all these things [inregards to becoming the first Spaniardchampion] because I didn’t want to havemore pressure,” she expressed. “But it feelsamazing to be part of the history, and this isa very special tournament.”

She added, “Only the best eight [play]and you feel like every match is a final—andI made it.”

And now she, along with another fanand tournament favorite, Zverev, will lookto join some of the game’s other brighteststars, in order to “make it” yet again—aschampions of the 2022 BNP Paribas Open.

2021: A Year of FirstsLast fall, the BNP Paribas Open was

contested for the first time since 2019and held in October for the first time in itshistory, due to COVID-19. The highlyanticipated return of one of tennis’s mostpopular tournaments—held after a 31-month hiatus—proved to be well worththe wait, as Cameron Norrie and PaulaBadosa both captured their first victories

Paula Badosa

in the event and paved the way for the sport’s up and comingtalent.

Norrie, who became the highest ranked British player in men’stennis as a result of his victory, defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In doing so, he not only earned his first-ever ATP Masters1000 title, but also became the first-ever British player to win aBNP Paribas Open title.

“I can’t really believe it,” he said shortly after winning last year. “Ifyou would have told me I would have won before the tournamentstarted, I wouldn’t have believed you. It’s amazing.”

Badosa was equally emotional, as she overcame variouspersonal issues away from the tennis court in order to ultimatelycapture the BNP Paribas Open and climb to within the top 15 ofthe world rankings (all the way from No. 70 in late 2020).

“There were moments when I thought I would never make ithere. I suffered a lot, and I had to work on it a lot,” she stressed.

Her adversity off the court likely had a role in her ability tohandle hardships on it, as she battled two-time BNP Paribas Openchampion Victoria Azarenka for 3 hours and 4 minutes.Ultimately, she prevailed 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 in the longest women’s finalever recorded in the history of the BNP Paribas Open.

“I’ve learned that nothing is impossible,” she stated afterhoisting the trophy last fall. “I have been through tough moments.[But] I never stopped dreaming.”

The Future is Bright in Tennis ParadiseRenowned around the world for its host site, Indian Wells

Tennis Garden, which is known as Tennis Paradise, the BNP ParibasOpen has recently been voted the ATP Tour Masters 1000 andWTA 1000 Tournament of the Year for the seventh year, an all-time record.

As the world’s largest WTA and ATP Tour combined two-weekevent, the tournament has captured these honors every year since2014.

And now, as Norrie and Badosa prepare to defend their titles, they will encounter their fair share of competition, as a majority ofthe game’s best players will be in the field to enjoy the tournament’shighly anticipated return to its usual March occurrence.

From Novak Djokovic (who recently made news for reasonsaside from his on-court achievements, as his Australian visa wastemporarily cancelled, due to his unvaccinated status), to last year’srunner-up, Daniil Medvedev—to the WTA’s current No. 1 rankedplayer, Ashleigh Barty, to former world No. 1 KarolínaHrdliková—this year’s BNP Paribas Open will once again have anendless supply of talent.

Djokovic, a five-time winner of the event and 20-time GrandSlam singles champion, is typically the men’s favorite. However, hisstatus as a participant is presently unknown, as he may choose toremain unvaccinated. If he doesn’t compete, look for Medvedev, the2021 U.S. Open champion, to continue to prove himself as one of

the game’s elite talents, along with the likes of 2019 ATP Finalschampion Stefanos Tsitsipas and 20-time Grand Slam championRafael Nadal.

On the women’s side, Barty and Hrdliková will be joined byAryna Sabalenka.

But, as proven by last fall’s tournament, nothing is impossible. With this in mind, fans should expect the unexpected once more—all in the midst of Tennis Paradise.

“Quite an honor,” said Maxwell Berning. “Just to be in the sameroom as Mickey Wright, Kathy Whitworth, Judy Rankin and PattyBerg – I tell you I remember when I first was on the Tour, just hownice Patty Berg was to me and I was scared to death, as it was the firsttime I ever played with Mickey. To be honored alongside them issomething I thought would never happen. I never even thoughtabout it. I’m now part of their family, which makes me very proud.”

Maxwell Berning has become a treasured golf instructor-in-residence at The Reserve Club since its inception in 1998. Notonly is she an honorary member there but also has become anintegral part of The Reserve family.

Bill Lane, Club President at The Reserve, said, “Susie embodiesevery characteristic of a Hall of Famer: exceptional skill, integrityand passion and is dedicated to the sport and professionalism ofgolf. Her vast playing and teaching expertise is exceeded only bythe personal attention she provides, enriching each lesson orplaying experience. We are most fortunate she shares her timewith members, and we are thrilled she has been elected to theWorld Golf Hall of Fame.”

Imagine gazing out at a lush, verdant expanse of freshly trimmedlawn with a nine-iron in one hand and an icy-cold margarita inthe other. This is just the beginning of the Woodhaven Country

Club experience. Located in the heart of Palm Desert just off ofWashington Street, the Club is nestled within a tree-lined gatedcommunity and surrounded by breathtaking views of the SanJacinto and Santa Rosa mountains.

The dual pillars of strength that support the recreationalnirvana of Woodhaven are the golf and tennis programs, under thestewardship of President and General Manager Ray Wytman.

The pristine, 18-hole community golf course - open to thepublic yet with the immersive vibe of an exclusive and welcomingenclave - is unparalleled in its scenic beauty. A wide variety of tieredpricing levels is offered, and surprisingly reasonable member andnon-member annual and semi-annual golf rates are available, including unlimited golf and use of practice facilities.

Kaitlyn Ellis, head golf professional and PGA Associate, says,“The experience here is not just golfit’s a hospitality endeavor. When people enter our gates, they are happy to be here. My goal isto keep them happy.”

Ellis, who was named the Women’s Player of the Year for theWomen’s PGA Desert Chapter in 2021, puts her leadershipprowess to use by directing a robust schedule of tournaments andplayer events.

Club treasurer and tennis program chair, David Galpine, notesthat this is a friendly facility that welcomes everyone with pricingthat fits the needs of each participant. Galpine, at 85 years young, still plays a vibrant game of singles tennis himself. The Club’s all-access, seasonal membership includes golf, tennis, pickleball, driving range and even use of the gym and is available for $300 permonth (single) and $475 per month (couple). On top of all this, golfis only $20 per round.

The tennis program has thrived under the direction of tennispro Rhenn Ramirez, who has an impressive tennis background inthe desert as a pro and instructor for the past 20 years.

Ramirez has revamped the tennis program in the 15 months he’sbeen at Woodhaven. With seven tennis courts and four pickleballcourts, the Woodhaven tennis center is known as “The PlayersClub.” Co-ed mixed doubles, also known as the “Woodhaven Open,”are a series of socials that take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays,

attracting couples as well as weekenders, with everyone encouragedto sign up. Players are often at the 3.0 and 4.0 levels and up, but ThePlayers Club is open to everyone.

Ramirez’ inf luence has been seen in the expansion of the juniortennis program which has partnered with tennis legend and desertresident, Rosie Casals, and her Love & Love Tennis Foundation tobenefit youth tennis. Pickleball has also become popular here, justas it has in many sports centers.

Ages of residents and players vary, however the culture is high-energy, and skill levels run the gamut. Case in point is Dori DeVries,USTA senior award winner who has found Woodhaven to be hertennis home and plays weekly at the Club.

Food and beverages options abound with lunch, dinner andhappy hour and full cocktail bar in The Vista Lounge. Sandwiches, snacks and refreshing drinks are available at Mulligan’s Bar & Grill. The fresh new look in the recently remodeled Pro Shop augmentsthe warm, congenial environment for everyone who enters (andlikes to shop the highest quality gear).

Weekend tennis and golf enthusiasts have been known to makeWoodhaven a rather permanent habit by purchasing one of the

well-appointed and affordable condominiums, all with privateveranda views of the golf course and resident benefits.

Whether a full-time resident or weekend tournament player,it’s easy to fall hard for the Woodhaven lifestyle, reinforced byviewing the website (woodhavencc.com) replete with images ofthe way life should and can be. Ultimately, all paths here lead toactive living and close friendships at Woodhaven Country Club.

IN ESCROW

His name and his story are legendary. In the 1970s and early1980s, Leonard Roscoe Tanner III, known as Roscoe, acedhis position as one of the most prolific tennis players of the

modern game, earning the nickname “The Rocket” for his deadlyleft-handed serve characterized by a full body lunge.

His lighting fast 153 mph serving speed (clocked in RanchoMirage, California in 1978) was the fastest ever recorded intournament competition, surpassed subsequently only by AndyRoddick with a 155 mph serve.

In an interview, Tanner is affable and down-to-earth with a senseof humor and sincere introspection. Retired from competitivetennis, today Tanner lives in Orlando, Florida where he has parlayedhis vast tennis experience and his passion to help others intobroadening horizons for underprivileged children.

Roscoe Tanner was born in Chattanooga and attended StanfordUniversity where he was named to the NCAA All-America teamthree years, was runner-up in the NCAA singles twice and, withSandy Mayer, won the NCAA doubles. As a collegian, Tanner alsowon the U.S. Amateur Indoor Championship and the U.S.Amateur Tournament.

After turning pro in 1972, he reached World No. 4 in 1979. Heis also well-known for winning the men’s singles title at theAustralian Open tournament in 1977, defeating Guillermo Vilas.Tanner reached the Wimbledon final in 1979, losing to BjörnBorg in five sets, although Tanner is credited with close to 30 aces

during the match. Tanner avenged this loss to Borg by beating himin four sets in the U.S. Open quarterfinals two months later, amatch where Tanner’s 140 mph serve brought the net downduring the fourth set.

Tanner points out that some of his fondest memories are thoseof living and playing competitively in the desert in the 1970s,where he nabbed victory twice in the American Airlines TennisGames, the precursor to the current BNP Paribas Open, then heldat the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. In1978, Tanner and Ray Moore took the winner’s cup at the Gamesin doubles, garnering them the cover on “Palm Springs Life.”

After his retirement, Tanner found himself involved in conf lictswith the law, which resulted in jailtime on several occasions.

But, as Tanner says, “When one door closes, another one blowsopen.”

In 2016, Tanner moved to Orlando, Florida where he beganteaching tennis to kids who would never normally have theopportunity to learn or even be exposed to the sport. He realizedthat success in tennis is often a function of privilege, where coach-to-student ratios are far more favorable than for kids in low-incomeenvironments. And he decided it was time to change that.

He began his own tennis coaching program at a church startingwith seven and eight year-olds and working towards the goal ofcollege scholarships. Tennis sessions are held inside the church whileTanner and church officials pursue permits for outdoor courts.

Tanner says, “Nothing is a coincidencein this life, and looking back is moreaccurate than seeing things in themoment,” attributing his devotion forlending his time and talent to a series ofevents in his life during periods ofchallenge. While in prison in Germany,

several co-prisoners befriended Tanner andintroduced him to bible study.Subsequently, a guard spent time readingthe bible with him. While in jail back inFlorida, Tanner was assisting an illiterateprisoner to write a letter home to hismother when he realized his purpose inlife: to help kids improve their livesthrough the vehicle of tennis.

“In my past, I realize I gave lip service topeople who were there to help me, likePastor Jim Stump [Stanford University]and Stan Smith [International Tennis Hallof Famer]. I’m a people pleaser. I alwaysbelieved that with pro sports the secretwas to never give up and I could achieve it.But that’s not true in real life, andsometimes you need to be willing to

acknowledge when something isn’tworking. Things I did were stupid, but it’sall led to this purpose of helping others.”

Tanner’s 16 year-old daughter, Lacey, lives in Orlando with him and is already atennis phenom as well as a straight-Astudent. A lefty like her dad, she is hopingto attend Stanford University, also like dad.Tanner has four other daughters and twopet pooches, and he also provides tennisinstruction at an area resort.

One of the differences between tennisin the 1970s and today is the level ofcollegiality, Tanner believes. He notes thatplayers were friends with each other inthose earlier days, whereas today there aremore outside inf luences. He remembersplaying with the best, including JimmyConnors, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, BjörnBorg, Dennis Ralston, Pancho Gonzales,Arthur Ashethe list goes on.

To some, Tanner’s life story may soundlike the makings of a movie. As it happens,

there are talks taking place with producersand writers to share his journey on the bigscreen.

Perhaps Roscoe Tanner’s iconic servehas been a metaphor for his approach tolife, going all in. Today, he has chosen toredefine personal boundary lines to focuson supporting kids and the communityand strengthen pathways to success, bothfor kids learning tennis as well as forhimself.

The ball is squarely in Tanner’s court, inspiring fans and followers alike.

Today we are going to focus on lag putting. I’m feeling excited to show you an excellent LAG PUTTINGdrill. (See photos) you can use any objects to recreate some targets. I placed a few alignment rods around

the f lag & 3 water bottles to have you putt from 3 different distances. I feel some simple items can helpyou stay focused on your lag putting. It would feel awesome to make these 10,20 & 40 foot but, but let’s

focus on getting the golf ball in that 3’ circle. (So less 3 putts);

Fortun’s Kitchen + Barowner Kevin Fortun

Spend 10 minutes with Kevin Fortun, and listen to him talkabout his passion for food, its preparation, and how tomaintain the highest quality for both. Then, you quickly

realize the true genius of this man. The Seattle, Washington, native started his journey in 1978,

when enrolled at the University of Washington, and working atsome of Seattle’s top restaurants. He then realized that there was aninconsistency in soups in many restaurants, and this is when hedecided to create and develop Stockpot Soups, a line of premium,fresh-refrigerated soups. His goal was to provide quality, convenience and consistency to food service operators with aproduct made from the freshest, all natural ingredients. The endresult was a fresh, homemade soup with no added preservatives, artificial ingredients or MSG.

Fortun’s Stockpot Soups quickly became an industry leader infresh homemade soup.

After expanding into retail markets, the company quickly grewinto the largest fresh-refrigerated soup company in the world. With sales in more than 23 countries, the world’s largest soupcompany took notice, and Campbell’s Soup Company purchasedStockpot Soups from Fortun in 1998.

After a five-year non-compete, Fortun jumped back in todevelop and produce a variety of new soups and fresh sauces underhis private label,“Fortun’s Finishing Touch Soups & Sauces.”

Now available in retail and food service outlets worldwide,Fortun’s soups and sauces are developed and produced in

California. The quality has always been Fortun’s highest priority, and his new soups exemplify this, consisting of a variety of choicesincluding: Lobster Bisque with Cognac, New England ClamChowder, Smoked Salmon Chowder, Louisiana Chowder, AztecaChicken & Rice, Cheddar & Broccoli, Roasted Tomato Bisque andClassic Minestrone, to name a few.

Fortun says it is easy to turn casual home cooking into gourmetrestaurant meals with his variety of gluten free sauces such as:Marsala & Mushroom, Santa Fe Verde, Rajun Cajun, Stroganoff,Four Pepper, Spanish Romanesco with Saffron, and Lemon Dillwith White Wine. He is also introducing a line of plant based“vegan” soups.

Another of many ventures for this complex man is the winebusiness. In 2000, he and his partner purchased a vineyard in St.Helena in the Napa Valley, and began immediately producing oneof the top 100-point wines, as rated by Wine Spectator. The winewas named “Hundred Acre,” consisting of three vineyards, eachproducing some of the top-rated wines in Napa Valley.

The desert is fortunate to have Kevin Fortun in La Quinta,California, providing a great menu, first-class atmosphere andoutstanding bar. Centrally located near Old Town La Quinta,Fortun’s Kitchen + Bar offers an engaging dining experience amidsta sophisticated indoor and al fresco atmosphere to be enjoyed yearround.

The Lucid Group is a car company that didn’t happenovernight. Since 2007, CEO Peter Rawlinson hasdreamed of taking on the task of launching electrical

vehicles on the open market. As Vice President of Engineering atTesla, Rawlinson led the redesign and launch of the Model S. Nowhe’s taking on his former employer, the EV super power, with hisrollout of the Lucid Air, the first production car for his company.

The Lucid Air comes in several models: Pure, Touring, GrandTouring and Dream Edition. The Dream Edition has specs thatmake Space X look more like the target competition Rawlinson sethis eyes on. The Dream is coming off the production line with1,111 horsepower. You should probably read that line again.

A new company, launching a first car with 1,000+ horsepowersounds, well, like a dream. However, cars started rolling off thefactory f loor at Lucid’s factory in Arizona in September. The LucidAir is a 5,000-lb. vehicle slotted into a luxury sedan category buthas super-car performance. With the dual motors running in sportmode, the Dream Edition is covering a quarter mile in 9.9 seconds. The 0-60 mph time is 2.5 seconds according to Lucid reports. Thatsort of track work is something you’d expect from McLaren, not anew kid on the block that looks more like a Bentley than a Bugatti.

The Air provides three driving modes: Smooth, Swift andSprint. Each offers a combination of braking, motor output, steering response, and damper controls to make the experiencedifferent and interesting. There will be no problem producingneck-breaking torque in any mode given the presence of anaccelerator.

Rawlinson has emphasized interior comfort and maximumbattery range as design aspects of the Air. The performance aspectseems to come almost as an afterthought. The 113 kw battery givesthe Dream a range of 520 miles in the 933-horsepower model.

Compare that to Tesla’s Model 3 at 353 miles. That 170 miles is thedifference between having to stop to recharge on your drive fromLos Angeles to Phoenix, or just keep on trucking. The chargingplatform on the Lucid Air can accept any charging station, makingthe world you’re virtual charging oyster. Recharging on a 300-kWDC connection can should replenish the battery from 10 to 80percent in 20 minutes. The 19.2-kW onboard charger should takeseven hours to fully charge, given the source is strong enough.

The interior has leg room for days. The front seats have legroomfit for a sumo wrestler. The rear seats have more room than aMercedes S-class sedan, which Car and Driver monikered “the goldstandard in large luxury sedans.” A thin, 5K digital display runs eastto west across the front dash. Designers were clearly going forelegance, and they hit the mark. The leather and alpaca interior iseverything you’d expect from a $170,000 vehicle. The roof is an all-glass canopy letting passengers really sense the roominess of thisride.

If there’s anything about the Lucid Air that is more nightmarethan dream, it’s the fact that all the 2022 production is sold out. Ifyou want one, you’ll have to settle for a lesser version in the 800-horsepower Grand Touring or the 620 horse Touring model. Theprice on those of course goes way down as well with the Touringretailing at $95,000.

As Lucid rolls into 2022 and 2023, Rawlinson has big dreams. He has already announced the plans for an SUV and has raisedmoney to increase production at the plant to almost 400,000 carsin the next decade. If the Lucid Air is any indicator, this is more thana Dream and a ride you’ll want to take.

Emerald and DiamondChandelier

Spring in the desert has become synonymous with the BNPParibas Open, as well as the grandeur of vibrant colors andtextures such as those seen in the blooming wildf lowers

blanketing hillside landscapes. There’s no better way to honor thiscolorful energy than through a personal style expression of richlyhued gemstones.

Diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires are a tribute to thesplendor of precious gemstones that, over five decades, have beenthe trademark of Picchiotti, the Italian jewelry house founded in1967 by Giuseppe Picchiotti, whose three adult children remainactively involved in the company.

A selection of Picchiotti earrings curated across severalcollections presents a natural complement to the personalstatements of a cultured lifestyle, easily brought to life at the BNPParibas and throughout the year.

Ideal for a cocktail at Spago overlooking Stadium Court 1,Sapphire and Diamond Earrings from the Masterpieces Collectiondisplay as delightful mini-starbursts with triple hearts as the focalpoint, set in 18K white gold. The theme of three is indeed thecharm of these earrings, with three strands of round whitediamonds resting at the ear and attaching to three longer strands ofround diamonds (12.20 tcw.), graduating in size from top tobottom. Each strand connects to a delicate blue heart-shaped SriLankan blue sapphire (22.20 tcw.), with the center strandextending past the other two for dramatic effect. $193,800.

The stunning Emerald and Diamond Chandelier earrings fromthe Chandelier Collection will look good on you at the Möet &Chandon Circle of Palms lounge. An example of the sheer artistry

of Picchiotti design and craftsmanship, the symmetry of the designreinforces a sense of order along with a touch of Art Deco. Twogleaming cushion cut emeralds (1.55 tcw.), ringed by small roundwhite diamonds, are joined to two rectangles of white diamondscomprised of emerald-cut diamonds (3.56 tcw.) surrounded by anoutline of round white diamonds (1.71 tcw.). Each rectanglefeatures an open center. All stones are set in 18K white gold.$44,250.

Perfect for relaxing in one of the Adirondack chairs outside ofStadium 1, the Yellow Diamond Fan Earrings from theMasterpieces Collection will keep you cool, showcasing atraditional design inspired by classical art and architecture. Tworadiant cut fancy yellow diamonds (2.16 tcw.) capture the eye, defined by half circles of six round white diamonds. Eight diamondfan “pleats” emanate outward from each yellow diamond, in 18Kwhite gold with a point at each end, and each sparkling pleat is linedwith round white diamonds (6.21 tcw.) in three graduating sizes.$71,350.

Lunch at Nobu overlooking Stadium 2 calls for somethingclassy such as the Pink and Blue Sapphire Drop Earrings from theEssentially Color Collection. Two delicate, rich blue sapphires(1.32 tcw.) encompassed in round white diamonds are eachattached to a bridge of white diamonds displayed in a uniquearchitectural column of round, emerald-cut and pear-shape (7.65tcw.) stones, arranged together like puzzle pieces with geometricprecision. Each earring is completed with a spectacular deep pinksapphire (7.39 tcw.), also bordered in small white diamonds and setin 18K white gold. $97,900.
