It is well known that Montandon went often in trips and collected largequantities of material, including specimens of the groups he did not studied, thensending it to the specialists of the world. That time, the material exchange betweenscientists was very intense. Igor Sienkiewicz wrote about Montandon that «hisprodigious activity he built mostly on the material he received from dozens ofpeople from all continents, with whom Montandon kept a vast correspondence.

Some were distinguished scientists who co-operated with him; others, collectors orexplorers who set foot in some of the wildest countries of the world, sent wholeentomological treasures to the Bucharest worker, who based on them whendescribed the many exotic species that bear Montandon’s name» (Sienkiewicz,1964).

The donations, which we present here where not the first and not the onlyones made by Montandon to the Museum of Zoology of Bucharest. In the autumn of1883, when he left Broºteni (Moldavia) and when he still was administrator of theRoyal Estate (1877–1888), Montandon donated a rich collection of coleopteranswhich included 5568 specimens of 2334 species belonging to 725 genera of 63families. Ample references on the original catalogue of this collection werepublished by Andrei & Serafim (1993).

Within the period 1896–1907, we found Arnold Montandon at the Museum ofZoology of Bucharest, where he was employed Grigore Antipa’s assistant. When hestarted his activity here, he was 44 and Antipa 29. That time Montandon wasconsidered one of the greatest hemipterologists of the world by the entomologists. Then, he had an intense activity with numerous field trips when he collected a hugebiological material, he made collections and numerous material exchanges, published about 60 papers and described tens and tens of new taxa. In 1905, thegreat autodidact became correspondent member of the Romanian Academy.Together with Grigore Antipa, he had an important role in the organization of thenew museum which was to be opened on the 24th of May 1908.

Donations which we present here dates from this fruitful period. Originalinventories are in the archive of the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of NaturalHistory (Bucharest) and were written by Montandon himself. They refer to 12invertebrate collections, out of which six were donated in 1900, and the others, in1901: Coleoptera 1900 (126 species**: 245 specimens) (Fig. 1) (Tab. 1); Diptera1900 (82 species: 145 specimens) (Fig. 2) (Tab. 2); Hemiptera-Homoptera 1900 (7species: 11 specimens) (Fig. 3) (Tab. 3); Hymenoptera 1900 (10 species: 12specimens) (Fig. 4) (Tab. 4); Neuroptera 1900 (53 species: 111 specimens) (Fig. 5)(Tab. 5); *Orthoptera 1900 (37 species: 112 specimens) and Coleoptera 1901 (219species**: 411 specimens) (Fig. 6) (Tab. 6); Hemiptera-Heteroptera 1901 (32species: 79 specimens) (Fig. 7) (Tab. 7); Hymenoptera 1901 (34 species: 49specimens) (Fig. 8) (Tab. 8); Lepidoptera 1901 (9 species: 22 specimens) (Fig. 9)(Tab. 9); Orthoptera 1901 (14 species: 42 specimens) (Fig. 10) (Tab. 10);Malacologia 1901 (78 species**: 605 specimens) (Fig. 11) (Tab. 11).

We have to mention that the proper inventory of the orthopteran donationfrom 1900 (marked by *) is absent from the Museum archive. But, donation ismentioned by Montandon in „Recapitulaþia Generalã 1900” (“GeneralRecapitulation 1900”), beside all the other entomological donations which werereceive by the Museum in 1900, from different persons (Fig. 12). So that,Montandon himself wrote the inventories and kept the collection updating.

Between 1896-1900 Montandon studied the orthopterans, collaborating withMalcolm Burr, who published in London two papers basing on the materialcollected by Montandon and himself, in Romania (Burr, 1898, 1899). In 1899,Ministry of Estate requested Montandon a study on Acrididea, who produced greatdamages in the Danube Delta (Montandon, 1900). As a matter of fact, along time,Montandon dedicated many pages to the pest and its control.

Most of the material of these donations is from Romania, doubtlesslyespecially from the doner’s collecting. But also, there are specimens from abroad, got by exchanges from his numerous correspondents.

524 GABRIELA ANDREI, ANGELA PETRESCU

Because the space allows us to present only facsimile fragments, we presentthe original inventories in tables, correcting some errors, without updating thescientific names, and for the Romanian localities we used the present transcription:Bucureºti instead of Bucuresci, Dobrogea instead of Dobrodja, Babadag instead ofBaba dagh, and so on.

As we can observe in facsimiles (Figs 1-12) Montandon indicated the numberof species and of specimens in each donated collection. Transcribing the inventoriesin tables, we remarked that some species are repeated in the same list, so the“species number” (marked by **) represents, in fact, the number of the inventoryreferences.

Montandon always mentioned those who identified the material. Amongthem there were Georges Sérullay and the abbot A. Carrel from Lyon, MarcelVauloger de Beaupré from Paris, Paul Mathieu from Oran, Malcolm Burr, AugustePuton etc. Many of these names are also included in the donation list from“Recapitulation”, this thing demonstrating once again the beautiful and noblerelations between those scientists with the same passion, and between museums, aspermanent institutions, preservers of the cultural values of communities.

In the inventories of the heteropterans and molluscs from 1901 (Tabs 7, 11)the scientist’s name, who identified the material, is not included. From this, weunderstand that Montandon was the single person who did that, therefore we add hisname in tables. We point out that the period 1878–1885 represented the initiationperiod in the mollusc study for the naturalist. His main mentor was the abbot D.Dupuy, a well-known mallacologist (Andrei & Pãunescu, 1982). Montandon’sinterest in molluscs was as old as that one in the insects, materialized later not onlyby the data publication (Montandon, 1906) but also by the creation of someimportant collection (Andrei, 2007).

*

Bringing light in such kind of original documents represents a duty for thosewho wanted to offers values to the next generations. Their publishing is not only ajoy for those who discovered them, but also a starting point for those who want toknow what kind of material still exist in the museum from that one donated byMontandon and his contemporaries, one hundred years ago.

COLECÞII DONATE DE ARNOLD L. MONTANDON MUZEULUI DE ZOOLOGIE DIN BUCUREªTI, ÎN PERIOADA 1900-1901
