John Moses BrowningTimeline |

At the age of 23, John Moses lodged his first patent, for the “J.M. Browning Single Shot Rifle“. The drafting of the text of the patent in the required form caused him more difficulty than the invention itself. This invention consisted of a simplification of the percussion mechanism, making it more durable and reliable.It was at about this time that Browning married Rachel Teresa Child, who would remain his life-long companion.Shortly before his death, his father handed over his business to the young Browning who, in association with his brother Matt, despite having less than one thousand dollars in the bank and no experience of machine-tool operation, transformed the humble store into a small gun making workshop employing seven people. But from the start, the remoteness of their location. A lack of a ready supply of customers, and the lack of capital meant that the business struggled to survive until, that is, luck intervened to make the inventor known. A representative of the Winchester company having chanced upon a gun made by the Browning brothers in another state and, considering its design to be of interest, bought it from its owner and sent it to his superiors in the company’s head office. So impressed were they that the managing director of Winchester himself set out straight away on a six day journey to what, at that time, was still the wild West, to meet the Browning brothers. Despite his astonishment at finding two young men in their twenties in a rustic workshop, he was perceptive enough to not be fooled by appearances and conclude commercial deals with them which would last for several decades. Over the years, Browning granted licenses to several manufacturers for dozens of inventions and firearms developed by him. It is no exaggeration to say that he invented almost everything in the field of firearms. What is more, it should be noted that the vast majority of his technological innovations have not been able to be bettered or replaced since the beginning of this century, a clear demonstration of the level of perfection achieved.

In 1897, it was another manager with flair, this time from the Fabrique Nationale (National Weapons Factory) at Herstal in Belgium, who noticed a 7.65 Browning pistol incorporating a novel locking mechanism. The FN obtained the manufacturing licence, and thus began an uninterrupted period of collaboration between the inventor from the Great Salt Lake and the factory on the banks of the river Meuse.Browning reached the peak of his art with the Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun, which was a considerable commercial success and prompted his first visit to the Herstal works.But his world-wide acclaim is without doubt due to the 9 mm Hi-Power semi-automatic pistol, of which over 10 million have been made and which, since 1907, has been adopted by the majority of the world’s police forces and armies. Browning has indeed become the generic name for this type of gun.

None of Browning’s success is due to chance : like all of the American pioneers he turned luck to his advantage only through an enormous amount of hard work. His strength of character and the steadfastness of his principles were out of the ordinary. Thus it was that, towards the end of his life, when offered an honorary title by a university, he refused it for the simple reason that “he had made it a rule never to accept anything that he had not gained as a result of his own work“.He died of a heart attack as he worked in his office at Herstal, during the course of his 61st visit to Belgium in 1926. His final words, as he lay dying in the arms of his son, Val, were : “Son, I wouldn’t be surprised if I were dying...“ Work stopped and the workers paid homage to the man who had entrusted their company with the task of turning so many of his inventions into reality. His body was repatriated to the United States, where he was buried with full military honours. His son Val continued his collaboration with the Belgian factory without interruption. A collaboration that continues to this very day.

John Moses Browning was born on 23 January 1855 in Ogden, Utah. He was one of the 22 children of Jonathan Browning, who, being a good

Mormon, had three wives.Gun making ran in the family of the young John Moses, as his father was

a gunsmith who had already been responsible for a number of innovations in the field.

As a young boy, he spent his time in his father’s workshop, and knew the name of every part of a gun before he could read. From the age of 6, he made fishing accessories from scraps of metal which he hammered into shape on an improvised, child-sized work bench made from a wooden

crate. Even his father, a man well known for his patience, found it difficult to conceal his impatience at the incessant stream of questions from the

young John Moses which disturbed him in his work...

The 19th Century American boyhood of John Moses Browning abounds with anecdotes, all of which share a point in common : they all point,

towards him becoming an internationally renowned inventor of genius. Numerous authors compare Browning with Thomas Edison, another self-

taught genius of that time.

History

B525The worthy heir to B25

In 1925, John Moses Browning put the finishing touches to an over-and-under shotgun that was to change the history of hunting shotguns. Once his prototype was finished, our man purely and simply called it the B 25 for Browning 1925.

83 years later, the B 525 is the latest evolution, the ultimate development to this legendary gun. It is, at the same time, the heir to the original model and its most modern, most highly perfected version, which has benefited from all the technological progress made on Browning hunting and target-shooting arms throughout the 20th century and since the beginning of the 21st century.

The B 525 was created in 2003 and it is the fifth generation of Browning over-and-under guns. The previous models, which have all made their contribution to its creation, are the B 125, which appeared in 1985, the B 325 born in 1991, and the B 425 unveiled in 1995. In one way or another, all these different versions, all these evolutions, have given birth to the B 525 and enabled it to become one of the most valued and most popular steel action frame fitted over-and-under hunting guns in the world.

Numerous improvements, Invector chokes, a massive single-piece binder, a single selective trig-ger, adjustable to three positions on certain models, etc., the B 525 has remained faithful to the model and the principles created by John Moses Browning, which are just as many guarantees of solidity, reliability and better performance. To the point where the robust forged steel action frame is guaranteed for 10 years, the proof of the confidence we have in this shotgun.

The B 525 now forms two families one for target-shooting the other for hunting, 21 models in all, three calibres, four barrel lengths, two types of action frame, steel or alloy and finally dozens of possible combinations to be sure of finding the right gun to accompany you for years and years of successful hunting.

WSM (ShORT TRAC) | Fans of conventional calibres can use this new arrival with the SHORT TRAC model. (p.48).

FUSION EVOLVE | When you are the inventor of the semi-automatic rifle, you have a duty to employ state-of-the-art technology, the FUSION EVOLVE, with a gas-oper-ated mechanism, is perfectly robust and reliable. It incorporates BACK BORE technology. (p. 36).

2 | Innovation / modernity

Because a gun should be both attractive and practical we turn to the most advanced creation techniques to constantly push back the frontiers of design but without forgetting that efficiency is most important in the field.

Some of the numerous recent inventions are shown below:

- The new compact magnum calibres (Winchester Short Magnum, Winchester Super Short Magnum), which are more powerful but generate less recoil than classic mag-nums, have been developed in association with Winchester, the other great Browning International group brand. The miniature magnums satisfy hunters who desire lighter, more manageable guns with magnum performance.

The success of this new ammunition has resulted in it being adopted by the entire armoury industry, which has adapted its guns to our cartridges. Browning has chosen to develop new exclusive, specific, patented gun systems to further satisfy these new calibres’ specific requirements in order to optimise their performance with total operational safety.

- Today, a fleet of ultramodern, computer controlled machines assures the highest precision.

- A 3-dimensional reading machine guarantees infallible production checking and unrivalled respect for tolerances to provide increased manufacturing precision.

- Thanks to PVD technology, metal surfaces are given micro-coverings in a titanium nitrate, chrome nitrate or tungsten carbide air vacuum. The advantage of this technique is that it increases the hardness and long-life of the parts and their resistance to cor-rosion

Fitted with side plates, this rifle exists in a “Custom” version having 65 cm barrels with a battue-type rib and a folding “ear shaped“ leaf rear sight. It has a 3 piece fore-end and a pistol grip stock with teardrops and with a hidden butt plate, in walnut specially selected for the direction of its grain. Each B525 shotgun comes with a number of different choices in engravings to suit your budget and desires and is dependent on what grade of gun you decide to purchase. These engravings include traditional game scenes such as duck and pheasants in flight to the classical roll & scroll. The engravings become more ornate and elaborate as one progresses from the Classic to our new top of the range Heritage model.

To ensure that every detail on your B525 is completed to the finest quality many engrav-ings are again hand finished.

Every single B525, like all Browning shotguns, undergoes extremely stringent quality checks which include manual inspections and measurements to actually firing each and every gun to check that the shot patterns meet our exacting standards . 4 | A choice of wood grades and stock options

Each stock is made using specially selected walnut sourced from renewable forests in Europe and a choice of grades are available from grades 2, 2.5, 3, 4 and 5.The grade of walnut used on your Browning B525 is dependent on the choice of gun that you decide to purchase. A choice of different stock grips is also available from Pistol grip, Round Pistol grip and a Straight Stock grip. Each stock is traditionally checkered providing additional control whilst shooting. The B 525 is the latest evolution of a legendary gun created by the innovative and genial mind of John Moses Browning in 1925: the B 25, the “last word” in over-end-under guns. It was on the basis of this gun that the B 325, the B 425 and, since 2003, the B525 were created and produced, three arms that have now been manufactured in a million copies, a real record. This figure attests not only to the success of the gun but, above all, to the confidence placed in Browning over-and-under guns – especially the B 525 – by hunters and sports-shooters throughout the whole world. In less than five years, the B525 has become an absolute reference, the perfect representative of Browning’s quality, know-how and tradition. In a back-bored barrel, the load passes more easily reducing the amount of recoil felt by the shooter, thus improving his shooting comfort.

“Back-bored” ensures that there is less friction between the shot and the wall of the barrel. Instead of having to overcome friction, more of the energy generated by the gun-powder gases serves to propel the cartridge, thus increasing the velocity of the load.

The shot retains its ballistic quality.

The force of the pressure exerted by the barrel wall on the load is reduced, thus reducing the number of deformed pellets fired and increasing velocity.

Browning’s extremely stringent quality checks impose a systematic inspection of each serial gun which is screened during numerous checks and tests.

3 | “Torture tests“

All of these torture tests are carried out in extreme conditions that greatly exceed those of the conventional C.I.P. standards. Browning guns’ legendary solidity and reliability are largely due to them passing all of these tests.

CCS 525With the introduction of the CCS 525 in the 525 range, Browning wanted to provide the demanding hunter with a gun that is attractive, while at the same time guaranteeing flawless operation and unequalled accuracy, and that can be easily adjusted to accept the different types of cartridge available on the market.

CCS 525 adjustment wedge system

Exclusive barrel convergence adjustment system: Cannot be unset and can be adapted to differ-ent types of ammunition. Thanks to this system, the double Express CCS525 rifles are originally set to 60m by the Liège Test Bench and the 2 impacts should be within a 5 cm square. The ammunition used is Winchester Partition 12.96 g and 18.53 g for 8x57JRS and 9.3x74R calibres, for the 30R Blaser, it is Blaser CDP 10.7 g ammunition. If you would like to use different ammunition you should adapt your gun using one of the 7 adjusting rings that are supplied with the gun.

System operation:

Whatever the diameter of the adjusting ring mounted at the gun’s muzzle, the barrel convergence angle maintains a natural pressure and therefore a permanent contact between the muzzle of the upper barrel and the barrel spacer wedge.As this wedge is itself silver-brazed on the lower barrel, this ensures during firing that the position of the upper barrel’s muzzle in relation to the lower barrel is constantly maintained.

Browning has reinvented the Express Rifle

The barrels, the essential part of this gun, are both traditional and original. A spacer on the upper barrel ensures the accuracy of the vertical convergence of the barrels, while lateral convergence is ensured by the design of the barrel itself, which incorporates a unique “Cradle“ strip. Once the ammunition has been chosen, a spacer ring is recommended and inserted securely under the foresight on the upper barrel, guaranteeing unequalled accuracy. A free-floating barrel is essential for utmost accuracy. The X-Bolt is free-floated by bed-ding the front and rear of the action for stability and to help maintain barrel-to-stock spacing. Another important point, the perfectly designed muzzle crown is slightly recessed to help protect the rifling from damage. Barrels are triple checked for interior finish, straightness and air-gauged for uniformity. All of these points make the X-Bolt an extremely accurate rifle.

• Bolt unlocking in the safety positionThe bolt unlock button works in conjunction with the top-tang safety to provide an added measure of safety. Conveniently located on top of the bolt lever, the bolt unlock button allows the bolt to be unlocked and opened with the safety in the on position. A-Bolt Hunter FieldA very European look for this A-Bolt Hunter Field whose essential element is a Monte Carlo stock which gives greater comfort when firing with a scope.

A-Bolt M1000 EclipseThis version is specially designed for long-distance sports shooting. Two major components suit it to this purpose: a heavy barrel offering superior accuracy and a Monte Carlo stock whose ergonomic grip ensures perfectly stable handling.

EuroboltWithout doubt the most versatile rifle on the market. Indeed, the Eurobolt is unique in that it is provided with interchangeable sights. The gun can be easily modified from a stalking rifle (with a rear leaf sight) into a driven game riffle (with a quarter rib). The trigger has a “stetcher“ (set trigger) mechanism, allowing the gun to be fired with a very light trigger pull (hair trigger) for very accurate shots. The Bavarian “hog’s back“ stock is always perfect, both for sighting with open sites and with a scope. Supplied with 2 sights: rearsight + battue rib: to be mounted according to choice.

BLR Light Weight

BLR Light Weight Take DownThe BLR is the only lever-action rifle developed in a magnum calibre. Its mechanics are faultless and characterised by their smoothness of operation, it has a removable magazine, it is ready for fitting a scope and has a top-quality barrel.

This is the traditional version of the BLR. This lever action arm is at home everywhere. On rifle ranges, in the hide or when stalking where its lever loading system is extremely reassuring when you are going through difficult terrain with your gun slung or resting on your shoulder.

The BLR now exists in a Take Down version, i.e. you can dismantle it for easy transport on hunting trips. No tools are required for dismantling, which is a quick, easy operation that in no way affects the accuracy of your gun.

By moving an slide on the front of the receiver and drawing back the breech, the arm is separated into two parts, barrel and fore-end on one side, stock and receiver on the other. Re-assembling is just as easy.

Some figures really do not need much comment at all.Just a few weeks ago, Browning proudly celebrated the manufacture of its millionth over-and-under gun in the B 525 family. A more than eloquent figure that materialises the undeniable success of Browing’s over-and-under guns and opens the way for the B 525 to enter the very tight circle of legendary guns.

The B 525 is the latest evolution of a mythical gun created by the innovative and genial mind of John Moses Browning in 1925: the B 25, the “last word” in over-end-under guns. It was on the basis of this gun that the B 325, the B 425 and, since 2003, the B525 were created and produced, three arms that have now been manufactured in a million pieces, a real record. This figure attests not only to the success of the gun but, above all, to the confidence placed in Browning over-and-under guns – especially the B 525 – by hunters and sports-shooters throughout the whole world. In less than five years, the B525 has become an absolute reference, the perfect representative of Browning’s quality, know-how and tradition. Its reliability, toughness and ease-of-use are legendary thanks to a faultless, much-envied quality of production. Each gun is built with unique care by qualified gunsmiths in our Japanese plant Miroku. Furthermore, for the past thirty years, Miroku has been considered one of the highest-performing production plants in the world. It is a place where care for detail and rigorous manufacturing processes are set up as rules, almost as a way of life. Every B 525 made is assembled in the traditional way using red ochre, the bearing surfaces of the bolt and action-frame are hand-filed and everything is checked and rechecked time and time again, so that neither time nor the thousands of cartridges to be fired will have the slightest effect on the gun.

It is at this price that we are able to guarantee Browning 525 action-frames for 10 years and that every gun is at the same time identical to the others, yet unique in itself.To celebrate the millionth gun produced, Browning is proud to announce the creation in 2009 of a special, limited, numbered series. Only 250 guns will be made in the hunting version and 250 in the sports shooting version.
