DR. KANDI DEITEMEYER NAMED CPCC’S FOURTH PRESIDENTThe Central Piedmont Community College Board of Trustees selected Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer to be the college’s fourth president in September 2016. She began her tenure a few months later in January. She succeeds Dr. Tony Zeiss, who was CPCC president for 24 years. Deitemeyer came to CPCC from the College of The Albemarle, based in Elizabeth City, N.C., where she served as president for six years.

Born and raised in Florida, Deitemeyer’s career path began at Polk Community College, where she graduated with an associate in arts. From there, she went on to the University of South Florida, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a doctorate in educational leadership.

Her career has spanned 24 years in higher education, with 22 of those serving community colleges in North Carolina, Kentucky and Florida.

“The board of trustees is excited we attracted and recruited such a high-energy and insightful person as Dr. Deitemeyer to take over the reins at CPCC,” said Edwin A. Dalrymple Jr., chairman of the CPCC board. “We know Dr. Deitemeyer will build upon the college’s legacy of dynamic leadership and its vital role of being an economic engine and workforce provider for Mecklenburg County.”

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS & NEW PROGRAMSSince its inception in 1963, CPCC has grown from a single building on Elizabeth Avenue serving 1,600 students to a thriving higher education institution comprised of six campuses and three centers. The college offers more than 300 degree, certification and diploma programs and engages with almost 245,000 individuals each year.

By adding programs that meet the community’s needs and expanding its footprint with new construction, the college is able to provide students with learning environments that boast state-of-the-art technology, attract quality faculty who bring years of industry experience into the classroom, and excel at being a valuable resource to Charlotte’s business and industry leaders seeking workforce development training.

Over the next six years, the college plans to use its Mecklenburg County bond monies and state funds to become an even greater asset to the local community, adding 15 new programs and more than 1,100,000 square feet in new facilities. In fact, many projects are currently underway, including Levine III at the Levine Campus and the new Advanced Technologies Center on Central Campus.

2016–2017 ANNUAL REPORT

At the heart of every great institution are great facilities that provide students with an unparalleled learning experience. On April 27, CPCC and Rodgers held a topping out ceremony for the college’s new Advanced Technology Center being constructed on Central Campus. The 80,000-square-foot facility is being paid for with bond funds passed by Mecklenburg County voters in 2013 and will serve as home base for multiple high-tech programs, including mechatronics, electrical and mechanical engineering, the engineering transfer program and others. The anticipated completion date is spring 2018.

A report by the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, an affiliate with Johns Hopkins University, cited CPCC for its effectiveness in developing apprenticeship programs and other customized training programs. The college has also forged strong partnerships with Carrier and the Gene Haas Foundation. Carrier has donated more than $100,000 in HVAC equipment to expose students to the latest commercial-use climate control equipment. The Gene Haas Foundation gave a $20,000 grant to help the college’s Computer Integrated Machining Technology program students prepare for manufacturing careers.

College officials broke ground in January for the Levine III building at the college’s Levine Campus. The new 88,000-square-foot facility will include the Georgia Tucker Fine Arts Hall, a new campus library, plus health and science labs. The fine arts hall is named in memory of Georgia Tucker, an accomplished ballerina and choreographer who performed throughout the U.S. The daughter of Betsy and Walter Tucker, Georgia attended CPCC and taught at the college as a dance instructor. Dr. & Mrs. Tucker made a generous gift in memory of their daughter for this new performance space.

STUDENT SUCCESS THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPSThe CPCC Foundation strives to make a quality education accessible through the more than $1 million in scholarships it provides to students each year.

These scholarships are made possible thanks to the generosity of the college’s valued donors – the individuals, business and industry, foundations, and civic clubs that choose to help transform students’ lives by investing in their future.

The college awards scholarships to close to 1,000 in-need students annually, giving them the opportunity to obtain the education and job-focused skills that can lead to meaningful, family-supporting careers.

CPCC’s scholarship donors are truly instrumental in transforming lives by facilitating access to higher education.

The Merancas Foundation awarded the college a grant to provide scholarship support to recent high school graduates, unemployed and underemployed individuals, and military veterans who wish to pursue a career in a technical field such as nursing, welding or commercial truck driving.

Since 1993, more than 9,000 CPCC students have embarked on a pathway to economic independence thanks to the generosity of The Merancas Foundation. “I can’t stand to see a person with a family work three jobs to earn a living,” said Casey Mermans. His son, Andy, added, “CPCC is the most cost-effective way to help people.”

With generous support from the Howard R. Levine Foundation, Bank of America Charitable Foundation, The Cato Corporation, The Leon Levine Foundation, James E. Clay, Kenneth R. Miller and Joel Rutledge, the college launched the Opportunity Scholarship Initiative in fall 2016. The initiative, which extends educational and career-training opportunities to low-income, minority students at area high schools, provides financial assistance to cover tuition, books and fees, notebook computers and the support services needed to earn a two-year technical, career-focused degree. This scholarship program’s intent is to promote greater economic mobility in the Charlotte region.

Honoring those who have sacrificed the most for our country motivates Kenneth R. Miller, who established a scholarship fund in support of U.S. military veterans enrolled at the college. Mr. Miller, a U.S. Navy veteran, describes his military experience as “the best thing that ever happened to me.” After his service, he was able to experience the value of a college education and wants to ensure that the more than 1,200 veterans enrolled at the college have the same opportunity.

“CPCC is the most cost-effective way to help people.”

In 2012, Marilynn and Bob Bowler lost their daughter, Vickie, to cancer. Family and friends decided to remember Vickie, a graduate of CPCC’s Paralegal Program, through the establishment of the Victoria Bowler Memorial Scholarship Fund. To date, 15 scholarships have been awarded, and friends and family have grown the fund to more than $100,000.

Charlotte Works, the workforce development board for Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, awarded the college a $926,000 grant to provide Work and Learn, an initiative designed to help out-of-school 16 to 24 year olds gain work experience, enter the job market, complete their educational goals and prepare for a career.

More than 165 students enrolled in the new program. Forty-five students participated in paid internships, and 48 students earned or are working toward earning industry-recognized credentials such as certified nurse assistant, welding and pharmacy technician.

GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPSInternational experience is one of the most important components of a 21st century education. Key job skills such as adaptability, global understanding and tolerance, leadership, and independence are directly fostered by learning and living abroad.

As a result, CPCC offers international education and cultural experiences to all members of the local community with the help of its global partners, including the German Language and Culture Foundation and funding through the International Education Fund. These resources help the college build a more inclusive Charlotte – a city that boasts workers with strong relationship-building skills, problem-solving abilities and creativity.

Each year, the college sends students, staff and local residents overseas to gain these valuable life skills – whether it’s through its assortment of apprenticeship opportunities or study abroad programs – to help individuals become successful global citizens who are aware of the world around them.

In October, the college dedicated its International Student Services Center in honor of Kal Kardous, a Charlotte entrepreneur and CPCC Foundation Board member, whose gift to CPCC’s International Education Fund helps to foster global awareness, understanding and knowledge among students, faculty/staff and the broader community. “I encourage other donors to join me in this effort,” said Kardous.

JPMorgan Chase’s $125,000 grant continued support of the Charlotte Regional Collaborative for a Global Economy and the efforts of regional community colleges to address the skills and talent pipeline needs of business and industry. The grant also sponsored the college’s sixth annual Global Competitiveness Summit, a workforce development conference focused on apprenticeships, and an entrepreneurship conference to promote small businesses in the global economy.

Since 2014, JPMorgan Chase has invested more than $650,000 in CPCC initiatives to help develop global logistics and transportation training programs (see photo of logistics student at bottom right) and to promote research and analysis of the region’s competitive resources and needs. “We are pleased to invest in initiatives that help local businesses compete and thrive in today’s global economy,” said Kent Phillips, executive director, Chase Middle Market Banking in Charlotte.

CPCC’s partnership with the Industrie-und Handelskammer-Karlsruke (IHK-K), the Institute of International Education (IIE) and The German Language Culture Foundation (GLCF) provided students with several opportunities for career advancement and global travel.

• The GLCF awarded CPCC a $12,000 grant to support scholarships for up to two students and one mentor as part of its “Study and Work Abroad – Experience the German Workplace as an Apprentice and Mentor!” program.

• In spring 2017, CPCC graduated 24 students in two certificate programs recognized by German manufacturers through the IHK-K partnership.

• The IIE granted CPCC $7,500 to support new study abroad scholarships as part of its commitment to increasing the diversity of students who study abroad through its Generation Study Abroad initiative.

“Through this donation, I want to help students have access to more international learning opportunities and to an education that

prepares them for careers in the 21st century global economy.”

EXEMPLARY FACULTY & STAFFCPCC prides itself on employing quality faculty and staff who are committed to student success. Our employees’ strong connection to the college is reflected in their years of service and passion for learning, invoking a sense of place and pride within the student body.

As a result, students are able to find their home away from home – a setting where they find community and a learning environment that gives them access to the support services they need to succeed.

Many of the resources available to CPCC’s students would not be possible if it wasn’t for our faculty and staff members working behind the scenes to ensure the CPCC experience is extraordinary for each student.

Thankfully, employees’ efforts do not go without recognition. Each year, select CPCC faculty and staff members are commended for the work they do each day, whether it’s with an internal college or community award that applauds them for being a visionary in their respective field.

Congratulations to Dr. Terina Lathe and Elizabeth Mitchell for being named Parr Fellows. The Mary and Wilton Parr Fellows Program at CPCC was established in 2005 by Wilton Parr, an appreciative lifelong learner. Mr. and Mrs. Parr wanted to provide an annual coveted and prestigious award to recognize excellence in teaching and to assist with faculty retention. The Parrs’ generosity extends to a scholarship program for students and support of the college’s performing arts programs.

CPCC presented Amy Bagwell, English instructor, and Laura Temples, executive director of Enterprise Information Services, with the Tony and Beth Zeiss Award at the 2017 college graduation ceremony. The award recognizes faculty and staff members whose efforts to support student success have been particularly extraordinary during the past year. During 2017, Amy helped present poetry to students and residents in traditional and new ways, while Laura helped champion several student-focused projects, including improvements to the MyCollege customer service experience and creating a financial aid self-service tool.

CPCC employees Amy Bagwell and Amy Burkett were recognized for their outstanding work by two local publications.

Amy Bagwell, an English instructor at CPCC, was named to Charlotte Magazine’s “50 Most Powerful People in Charlotte” list earlier this year for her efforts with Goodyear Arts, an initiative that transforms spaces headed for destruction into temporary artist residencies.

The Mecklenburg Times named Amy Burkett, general manager for WTVI PBS Charlotte, to its 2017 class of “50 Most Influential Women.” The honorees were selected based on their professional accomplishments and community involvement within the Charlotte area.

MEMORIAL AND HONOR GIFTSMemorial and honor gifts are a special way to thoughtfully remember family and friends. Some CPCC donors make a provision for gifts to be made to the college at their passing, or their families make the request. Other donors make gifts of appreciation in honor of someone who has been a vital part of their lives, for a birthday, anniversary, holiday or other notable occasion.
