Blue Tag Belt– 5th Kup Syllabus

At blue tag level one can say you are now a ‘Half Dan’ as you are in belt terms half way to black belt.

However the second part of the journey is longer and harder than the first part.

You should now be competent at the basics, but you need to persevere with not only the new techniques that await you, but still trying to improve the skills you already have.

Blue Tag Belt– 5th Kup Syllabus

High Inner Forearm Block, Low Front Kick, Middle Double Punch. (Nopunde anuro palmok makgi, Najunde Ap chagi, Kaunde Doo Jirugi) Performed all in walking stance. This combination is performed in the pattern Yul-Gok

The high inner forearm block is performed the same as a middle block, but being high the top of the fist is level with the eyes.

The punches are performed in a fast motion

Obverse & Reverse Palm Hooking Block, Obverse Punch. This combination is performed in the pattern Yul-Gok and done in walking stance. Hooking block is performed in an arc motion as it comes down on top of the attacking arm. Using the palm gives you the option to grab.

Performed in normal motion

These two moves are performed in connecting motion

Connecting Motion is a pair of techniques, where the first is the start and the second the finish. Further more this pair of techniques flow and are performed in one breath so that they can be define as connecting motion.

Palm Hooking Block (Sonbadak golcho magki)

Bending Ready Stance A, Side Kick, Front Elbow Strike

This set of techniques are performed in the pattern Yul-Gok. Do not rush the techniques. Show them properly as they are all done in normal motion. Pause on the bending ready stance to demonstrate balance and control.

Strike the open palm with the front elbow strike. Front Elbow (Ap palkup)

Twin Knifehand Block (Sang sonkal magki) This block is similar to twin forearm block. Blocking a downward attack and a middle attack at the same time. The knifehand is now the blocking tool.

X-Stance (Kyocha sogi) This stance is used for both attacking and blocking. The stance is performed in a jumping motion to cover distance or avoid. One foot is crossed over or behind the other. The cross foot touches the ground with the front sole only. When the weight is on the right leg then it is called right X-stance, hence the same for the left leg.

Kyocha Sogi (X-Stance) Weight Distribution : almost 100% of the weight no the balancing leg Leading Leg : The leg carrying the weight Stance can be full or half facing.

Double Forearm Block (Doo palmok makgi) The main reason for this block is so that the secondary arm is positioned ready to defend another attack quickly. The secondary arms little finger is an inch from the primary arms elbow.

Start position is from behind you, as per forearm guarding block.

Palm Pushing Block (Sonbadak Miro magki)

Pushing blocks are designed to push an opponent off balance. The palm is one of the most popular tools used in performing a pushing block.

Vertical Stance (Soojik sogi) This stance is used to apply a technique when an L-stance is too close to be used, and therefore by using a vertical stance which is shorter in length the correct target can be sought.

Soojik Sogi (Vertical Stance) Weight Distribution : 60%-40% (60% on the rear leg) Leading Leg : Rear Leg Toes of both feet point 15° inward

Reverse Hooking Kick. (Bandae goro chagi) This kick is similar to reverse turning kick, but is performed in more of a ‘whipping’ motion as the heel of the kicking leg is hooked back into the target. Due to the whipping motion and hooking motion it is a faster kick to perform than a reverse turning kick.

Can be performed as a 45 or 180 degree kick. Attacking tool is the back heel. (Dwit chook)

Blue Tag Belt– 5th Kup Syllabus

Step Through Side Kick. This kick uses a step through motion to cover distance quickly from an L-stance, fighting stance or other side on stances. The front leg is the kicking leg. Ground is covered by using the rear leg to step behind the kicking leg.

3 Step Semi Free Sparring (Advanced) 3 step semi free sparring advanced is performed the same as basic semi free sparring except the attacker can now use any kick from the rear leg and hand techniques. Hence the attacker can choose to mix and match the 3 attacks with kicks and hand attacks which is getting closer to complete free sparring or to help perfect those already doing free sparring. (Example of basic 3 step semi free sparring advanced below:)

Remember: Both start in right L-stance, forearm guarding block. Attacker MUST step forward 3 times with attacks. Defender needs to block or evade. After 3rd attack, defender counters with any kick or hand techniques. 1 to 3 counters maximum.

Blue Tag Belt – 5th Kup.

Self Defence Self defence for blue tag 5th Kup is the same as 6th Kup, as one is for double handed collar holds and the other a front double handed strangle. The techniques at 6th Kup work for both types of holds.

Green Tag Belt – 7th Kup.

Measured Kick– Turning Kick (Dolloyo Chagi)

This is a grading requirement, for the student to demonstrate the execution of this kick with control and by using the correct attacking tool which is the ball of the foot. (Apkumchi) It also shows leg strength by holding the kick at the target.
