Did you hear the one about the laugh-a-minute guy who told his doctor he was suffering from depression? Well, you will not hear it here. There is nothing funny about depression, the illness that may have caused the suicide death

of comedian-actor Robin Williams last week.

If it is determined that this condition – depression – moved him to the tipping point and caused him to take his own life, than Williams was depression’s most famous victim last week but

far from its only victim.While it may be impossible to

link depression to the majority of suicides, the Centers for Disease Control says the severity of a per-son’s depression often results in a completed suicide. Additionally, the CDC defines it as “a poten-

tially life-threatening mood disor-der” that affects nearly 18 million Americans annually.

While a lot of Americans have an intimate connection with depression, most people, including Latinos, do not understand it very

If you answered e) “All of the above”, you are correct. Until recently, Aurora may have been most recognized for being the second largest city in the Denver metropolitan area. However, with recent business activity, demographic changes and one of the ten most con-tentious congressional races in the country, Aurora is coming into its own.Diversification of Aurora

As with other suburbs in the metro area, Aurora has experienced explosive growth in the last two decades. From 1990 – 2000, the total population grew 24 percent and from 2000 – 2010, the total population grew from 276,393 to 325,078, an 18 percent increase. Aurora is now ranked as the country’s 55th largest city and third largest in Colorado.

Aurora is one of the most diverse cities in the metro area and is quickly becoming more diverse. The growth of the Latino population outpaced all other ethnic groups with a 70 percent population increase from 2000 – 2010 for a total population of 93,263. The Latino population now makes up 29 percent of Aurora’s total population.

The explosive growth of the Latino population compares to African American growth over the last decade of 38 per-cent. African Americans now make up 16 percent of Aurora’s population. The Asian population grew 33 percent to total 5 percent of Aurora’s population. In contrast, Aurora’s White population grew only 4 percent but still totals 61 percent of the total population.*Public Education in Aurora

Reflective of growth in populations of color, Aurora Public Schools (APS) now serves 79 percent children of color including 52 percent Latino children. Aurora Public Schools is the sixth largest district in the state with approximately 40,000 students.

As with every school district in the metro area, Aurora struggles with overall graduation rates and specifically grad-uation of students of color. While average graduation for APS

is 74 percent, the Latino graduation rate is only 60 percent and the African American graduation rate is only 65 percent.

Every year, 6.4 percent of APS students drop out of school which is over double the state dropout rate of 3 per-cent. However, expelled students are not included in these figures.* The Community College of Aurora provides higher education.Aurora Military History

Perhaps no city in the country has benefitted more from military bases than Aurora. When Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center housed patients during World Wars I and II, it contained some of the largest structures in the state. President Eisenhower was treated at the hospital and John Kerry was born there when his father was being treated for tuberculosis. Aurora’s population surged as did its positive reputation.

As good as Fitzsimmons was to Aurora when it was a working Army facility, the closure of the base brought even more growth. The site now houses Children’s Hospital and the UC Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, and the future Veteran’s Administration hospital is also to be built there. Together, the medical facilities now comprise one of the state’s premier medical corridors.

When Lowry Air Force Base, located in both Denver and Aurora, was closed in the mid 1990’s, policy makers were both worried and optimistic. The base employed 7,000 at its height and was a key Air Force facility in World War II and beyond. However, the economic impact of Lowry’s reinven-tion as a walkable mixed-use neighborhood has far eclipsed the base when it was in full operation. As a result, property values have increased adjacent to and near Lowry.Aurora Economics

One of the biggest criticisms of Aurora is the lack of a major downtown or city center. Despite that, NerdWallet just proclaimed Aurora to be the 9th fastest growing city in Colorado. Aurora’s proximity to Denver International Airport

and I-70 has spurred economic activity. The Aurora Economic Development Council has targeted aerospace and transportation logis-tics as key industries and Raytheon Company, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and Boeing all have substantial Aurora operations.

According to State Representative, Jovan Melton, who represents District 41 in Southwest Aurora, “Aurora is making major inroads in our transition from being a bedroom community to a major force for economic development. We are collaborating

with Buckley Air Force Base in aerospace but also keying on renewable energy. We are bringing Aurora’s distinct fea-tures to benefit the metro area and to help the state reach our economic development goals.”

Perhaps the most controversial (and lucrative) eco-nomic development project in Aurora is the Gaylord Hotel and Conference Center. This self-contained conference center is designed to compete for Colorado convention business. In 2012, the Colorado Economic Development Commission awarded the Gaylord project $81.4 million through the Regional Tourism Act. The hotel and conference center has been questioned ever since. A group of downtown Denver hotels which sued to stop the Gaylord incentives obviously felt threatened by business that might be siphoned from downtown Denver. For Aurora, the lawsuit signaled that they are being taken seriously as an economic development threat.6th Congressional District

If Aurora’s growing demographics, economic develop-ment and expanding neighborhoods don’t catch your atten-tion, you might pay attention to Aurora given their crucial role in deciding the next Colorado congressional representative from the 6th district. Currently represented by Republican Mike Coffman, Democratic challenger, Andrew Romanoff, is posing a serious threat partially due to a redrawn district that includes more Latinos and more Aurorans.

Both the national Republican and Democratic parties have declared the 6th Congressional District race as one of the top ten races in the country. The eyes of our state, if not the country, will be on Aurora during the campaign.

Uss denver retired

After 46 years of service, USS Denver held its decom-missioning ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Friday, Aug. 14.

“It is with a great sense of pride that Denver will decommis-sion as the oldest deployable warship in the Navy and as the last and longest serving Austin-class amphibious transport dock,” said Commanding Officer Capt. Michael P. Donnelly. “Her extended service life is a true testament to the men and women of Lockheed Shipbuilding who built her and the generations of crews who maintained and sailed her through the full spectrum of missions: from disaster relief to Gulf War command ship.”

The ship was launched on Jan. 23, 1965 and commis-sioned on Oct. 26, 1968, being christened by her sponsor,

Mrs. John Love, wife of the governor of Colorado. Denver is the third U.S. Navy ship to bear the name of American pioneer James William Denver and the capital of the state of Colorado. Over its history, the ship played a significant role in several operations, most notably Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon, Vietnam in April 1975.

“That she finishes her operational service in our for-ward-deployed naval forces is fitting to the reputation her crews have earned her over 46 years of service and is fit-tingly in synch with our Navy’s current priorities: warfight-ing first; operate forward; be ready,” said Donnelly. “Denver has been the example of these tenets.”

nominations for noxious Weed advisory Committee

Three positions within the State Noxious Weed Advisory Committee will become vacant in December 2014. Nominations are now being sought to fill these positions.

The primary responsibility of the committee is to discuss Colorado’s weed management problems and craft solutions that best reflect public and private interests. The committee then makes recommendations to the Colorado Department of Agriculture concerning designation of state noxious weeds; classification of state noxious weeds; devel-opment and implementation of state weed management plans; and prescribed techniques for eradication, contain-ment, and suppression of state noxious weeds.

Bridge academySchool District 27J, partnering with Colorado Youth

for a Change, launched Bridge Academy, located inside the Brighton Learning and Resource Center. The Bridge Academy program targets 17- to 20-year-olds who have already dropped out of high school or who are at risk of dropping out.

Bridge will utilize a “blended learning” model, with a web-based curriculum and on-site mentors. Students will work towards completing the required credits for a diploma at their desired pace during school hours, as well as be able to work online outside of school. Bridge Academy is expected to serve 15 to 30 students in its first year.

against islamist: An Egyptian court has dissolved the Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing. This is the government’s latest move against the Islamist movement. Along with banning the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt has arrested hundreds of the members of the group.

pistorius case continues: The final closing arguments over former Olympian Oscar Pistorius ended last week. Pistorius is accused of killing his girlfriend. A South African courtroom revisited phone records and witness testimony. Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steencamp on Valentine’s Day last year. The judge said she will consider her verdict over the next five weeks and announce it next month.

ebola outbreak affects youth games: The Ebola crisis continues to linger as the International Olympic Committee has banned three athletes from compet-ing at the Youth Games in Nanjing China. Around 700 athletes are attending the games. According to a report from the World Health Organization, 1,069 people have died from Ebola. The majority of those deaths have occurred in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

EuropeFrench runner stripped of gold:

French runner Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad took home the gold at the European Championships for winning the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. However, his celebra-tion caused him to have his European gold stripped. Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad removed his running vest while approach-ing the final barrier and put it in his mouth and waved to the crowd. He put it back on after the race, but an appeal from Spain on behalf of fourth-placed athlete Angel Mullera caused for Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad to be stripped of his accomplishment.

landslide derails train in swiss alps: A landslide caused a passenger train to partially derail in the Swiss Alps injuring six people. The train was headed from St. Mortiz to Chur in eastern Switzerland. A res-cue operation was under way that afternoon

and no one was killed.

Latin americaBrazilian presidential candidate

dies: Eduardo Campos died when a small plane crashed into a residential neighbor-hood. Campos was a candidate and expected to become the next Brazilian president. Campos was on his way to a campaign stop when the crash occurred. There were also seven other people aboard the plane and all of them were killed.

Middle EastMarch to islamabad begins:

Thousands of anti-government supporters led by two leaders from Pakistan have joined a march to Islamabad. Their mission is to demand the resignation of the country’s prime minister. The march has been peace-ful so far, but thousands of police officers have been deployed along the route.

Journalist beheaded: A video released by ISIS on Youtube shows the beheading of American journalist James Foley, who disap-peared in November 2012 in Syria.

north americaFerguson police under scrutiny:

Outrage from the public due to the killing of 18-year old Michael Brown by a police offi-cer in Ferguson, Mo. is at an all-time high. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson released the name of the officer who killed Brown as Officer Darren Wilson, a six-year veteran of the department. Protests have been ongoing since the killing.

airplane evacuated: A JetBlue Airways flight departing from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was evacuated after one of its engines caught fire. Passengers and crew used emergency slides to evacuate the plane. There are no known injuries among the pas-sengers and crew members aboard the plane.

perry indicted: Texas Gov. Rick Perry was indicted by a grand jury on two felony counts stemming from his threat to veto funding for a statewide public integrity unit run by Travis Country District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, a Democrat, unless she stepped down. Perry was booked Tuesday at the Travis County Court in Austin.

images of injustice and “angry black man”

Imágenes de injusticia y hombre negro enojadoMi último trabajo en educación supe-

rior tuvo lugar en East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. Era un momento seminal ya que vine a internalizar el hecho de que los nobles objetivos del movimiento de los derechos civiles de la era de Martin Luther King, Jr. todavía tenían que ser obtenidos.

Las personas negras son todavía ciu-dadanos de segunda clase y esto es triste. No estoy acostumbrado a las condiciones racia-les de Negro/Blanco en ese estado sureño ya que mi experiencia de Colorado, especial-mente en Denver, refleja la evaluación de una comunidad dinámica que ha proporcionado

icanos en puestos de poder e influencia. El alcalde Michael Hancock que también es negro es muy el producto de una estructura política definida por la influencia de Webb.

Aun cuando los negros de Colorado con-tinúan luchando contra una historia nega-tiva socio-económica y educativa, la comu-nidad continua participando en una intensa lucha para mejorar su vida. El respeto que debe venir de ese tipo de participación no se nota en el oriente de Carolina del Norte.

La supuesta injusticia racial y en una forma más poderosa está visitando actual-mente a Ferguson, Missouri, un suburbio de St. Louis que es un 67 por ciento afroameri-cano con un departamento de policía de 53 personas que incluye a tres negros. Fue allá en donde un joven de 18 años, fue balaceado y asesinado por un agente de policía blanco.

La comunidad ha reaccionado al jun-tarse y demostrar en las calles pidiendo justicia. La policía respondió excusándose, pasando esto a las autoridades del condado y del estado y al mismo tiempo creando otra historia y video que muestra que quien ellos han identificado como Michael Brown está robando una tienda inmediatamente antes de ser asesinado.

Es claro que presentar la historia del robo tuvo la intención de evitar la acusación pública del agente de la policía, Darren Wilson, quien cometió el asesinato. También es claro que el video muestra la imagen de

un hombre negro muy grande empujando e intimidando a un individuo mucho más pequeño que va en contra de uno de los retos más grandes que la comunidad negra enfrenta en toda América; esa es la imagen del “un hombre negro enojado”.

A pesar de todos los esfuerzos y los pro-gramas para ayudar a los hombres negros jóvenes de rebajar la conducta rebelde y con-vertirse en mejores ciudadanos, la imagen de esta persona negra grande, indignada y violenta continúa definiéndolos. Esto es desafortunado por que con toda la atención de los medios y la comunidad de todo el mundo y la oportunidad que ofrece para que las autoridades sean más responsables, la influencia de las imagines en el video no se pueden negar.

Los eventos de Ferguson recrean actu-almente el enfrentamiento de conceptos que, por un lado, muestran a las autoridades blancas institucionales como las del Viejo Sur, que buscan controlar a la gente negra usando una tiranía perniciosa en las calles; y por el otro lado, una comunidad negra que trata de vivir con una historia de violencia e intimidación en contra de una sociedad que hace responsable de su condición humana que comienza con la esclavitud.

En el análisis final la opresión es opre-sión y no importa cuál sea la raíz de ese comportamiento. Soy muy sensible a la injusticia étnica y racial ya que ha sido una condición de muchos siglos y que la comu-nidad latina está en el proceso de resolver.

Es triste pensar que el Movimiento de los Derechos Civiles no consiguió esas ganan-cias para evitar lo que sucedió en Ferguson. Es triste también que la imagen del video esté entorpeciendo el paso a la justicia.

My last higher education assign-ment took place at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. It was a seminal time as I came to inter-nalize the fact that the lofty goals of the civil rights move-ment of the Martin

Luther King, Jr. era have yet to be achieved.Black folks are still second-class citi-

zens and that is sad. I was not used to the black/white racial conditions in that south-ern state as my experience in Colorado, especially in Denver, reflects an assessment of a dynamic community that has provided effective leadership to the state and city.

The Wellington Webb administration featured a heavy investment to have African Americans in positions of power and influ-ence. Mayor Michael Hancock who is also black is very much a product of the political structure defined by Webb’s influence.

Although blacks in Colorado continue to struggle with a negative socio-economic and education history, the community continues to be engaged in an intense effort to bet-tering their lot. The respect that should come from that kind of engagement is not as evident in Eastern North Carolina.

Alleged racial injustice in a more powerful way is currently visiting Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis that is 67 percent African American with a 53-person police department that includes only 3 blacks. It was there that an 18-year old black man, Michael Brown, was shot and killed by a white police officer.

The community has reacted by coming together to demonstrate in the streets and call for justice. The police responded by recusing itself, deferring to the county and state authori-ties and at the same time dribbled out another

story and video that shows who they have iden-tified as Michael Brown robbing a convenience store immediately before he was killed.

It is clear that the timing of the robbery story was intended to blunt the public’s indictment of the police offi-cer, Darren Wilson, who did the killing. It is also clear that the video shows an image of a very large black man pushing

and intimidating a much smaller individual that goes against one of the major challenges the black community faces across America; that is the image of an “angry black man.”

Despite all of the efforts and programs to assist young black males to curb unruly conduct and become more successful citi-zens, the image of this large, angry and violent black person continues to define them. That is unfortunate because with all the community and media attention world-

wide and the opportunity it affords to make authorities accountable, the influence of the images on the video cannot be denied.

The events at Ferguson actually recreate the clash of concepts that, on the one hand, depict white institutional authorities much like those of the Old South that seek to control black people by using vicious tyranny on the streets; and on the other, a black community trying to live with a history of violence and intimidation against a society that it holds responsible for their human condition beginning with slavery.

In the final analysis oppression is oppression no matter the roots of that behavior. I am most sensitive to ethnic and racial injustice as that has been a centuries-long condition that the Latino community is in the process of resolving.

It is sad to think that the Civil Rights Movement did not achieve the gains to prevent what happened in Ferguson. It is also sad that the image in the video is again blunting the drive for justice.

Biography paints a vivid picture of the Centennial StateJoshua PilkinGton

The west was never won. It was scav-enged, explored, fought over and founded, but it was never won. Perhaps one of the better illustrations to that point comes from the historical biography “The Life & Times of Charles Autobees 1812-1882.” Covering an array of historical events alongside clev-erly placed and poignant anecdotal evidence, the book reads not only as a biography of one of Colorado’s more innovative leaders, but also as an homage to the first, true Coloradoans.The narrative

Lecompte lends her voice throughout “The Life & Times of Charles Autobees 1812-1882” guiding the narrative from one incident to another with seamless segues; it’s the additional voices, however, that give the biography life.

It reads much like a Ken Burns docu-mentary, with Lecompte’s narrative pulling the pieces together while actual accounts from the time – compiled from newspaper and magazine clippings as well as histori-cal texts – provide of vivid portrayal of the events unfolding.

When describing the settlement of Huerfano, for example, Lecompte writes:

“On February 20, 1853, Charles Autobees

and “as many settlers he could take with him” arrived at the mouth of the Huerfano to claim the land Ceran St Vrain had prom-ised him. … Charley picked out a mile-wide bottom on the west side of the Huerfano River extending from the river’s junction with the Arkansas to three miles above its mouth. … In the summer of 1853 G.H. Heap described a location two or three miles upstream from Charley’s farm but of the same aspect:

Descending the buttes to the Huerfano, we encamped on about five miles above its mouth. A bold and rapid stream, its waters were turbid, but sweet and cool; the river-bottom was broad and thickly wooded with willows and cottonwoods, interlaced with the wild rose and grape-vine, and carpeted soft grass – a sylvan paradise. This stream was about twenty-five yards in breadth, and five feet deep close to the banks.” Historical value

Perhaps the most relevant and rivet-ing factor of “The Life & Times of Charles Autobees 1812-1882” is its historical values.

When providing historical background to Autobees, Lecompte cites her previous work Trappers of the Far West stating that Autobees was born in St. Louis in 1812 to a French-Canadian father and an English; however one look at an Autobees portrait - with his stern, weathered face, long hair and

dark eyes, makes it very clear that above all nationalities Autobees was Coloradoan. And anyone wanting to dig further into the his-tory of Colorado, and more specifically south-ern Colorado and New Mexico, would find Autobees’ story and excellent place to start.

The book highlights both major and minor events in the history of the Centennial State – or better stated the territory that made up what is now Colorado and New Mexico. The Taos Rebellion of 1847, the Fort El Pueblo Massacre of 1854 and the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 are all represented in the book as Autobees – omnipresent as he was – was tied to all three.

The book also provides anecdotal his-torical facts unique to Autobees and very emblematic of his character. When describ-ing Autobees’ stabbing at Fort Union in 1856, Lecompte writes:

“One of Charley’s business interests at this time was a forage contract with the quartermaster at Fort Union. On July 20, 1856, while Charley was at Fort Union, he was stabbed in the back by the Mexican named Juan Pineda, the blade entering near his heart. The post doctor examined him and said, “ You won’t live a minute.” Charley drew his gun and shouted, “If I wont live a minute you won’t live half a minute, you ----!” The doctor bolted out the door and would not return without a body guard.”

“The Life & Times of Charles Autobees 1812-1882”: Fur Trapper, Trader, Interpreter, Military Scout, Frontiersman, Justice of the Peace, County Commissioner and Leader of one of the First Mexican settlements in Colorado was written by Janet Lecompte and edited by George Autobee Cpt. Ret.

All Coloradans should have a say in where our electricity comes from and how it is produced. This is particularly important right now because Xcel wants to prop up its monopoly by limiting customer choice. Xcel is trying to prevent more Coloradans from installing solar on our homes and businesses. With this in mind, I urge our community to break free from Xcel through municipalization.

Recently, I joined a campaign called Coloradans for Electricity Choices that empowers communities like ours to

municipalize. This means we would take control of our electricity sources by operat-ing our own municipal electric utility.

Municipal electric systems are owned and operated by and for the communi-ties they serve. We’d be joining 29 other Colorado communities with municipal utilities.

If Xcel wants to prevent us from mak-ing our own electricity choices – like personal investments in rooftop solar – we should consider other options.

well. Very simply, goes the clinical defini-tion, depression is “a two-week period in which a person has a depressed mood,” says Dr. Patrick Fox, Deputy Director of Clinical Services for the Colorado Department of Human Services of Behavioral Health.

Who gets it? “There is a genetic com-ponent for some and there are also hor-monal components, as well,” says Fox. For women, depression can set in after giving birth. It has also been connected to puberty in younger girls and menopause in older women. Menstrual cycles can also play a role in depression. Additionally, researchers have connected it to certain environmental variables, including marriage – for men and women,” says Fox. “Marriage can be protec-tive.” But an unhappy marriage can also be a source of depression.

While the CDC says the majority of those who suffer depression are women – 70 percent – they are also more likely to be the ones who seek treatment, says Fox. Men, he adds, are more likely to live with it.

“It’s a complicated experience with a lot of twists and turns,” says Sarah, a person who has lived through depression and who asked she only be identified with her first name. Depression, she says recalling her own bout with it, is hard to explain to some-one who might reduce it to simple sadness or a temporary bout of the blues. Searching for just the right words, she describes it as a melancholy that can feel bottomless. It is “a feeling of apathy and disconnect…sadness and anxiety…like a shower fog that you can’t just wipe away.”

The quick to smile, affable woman who

works as an office manager downtown says therapy helped her better understand what she was experiencing. It also taught her why the tiniest of routines, including just getting out of bed, can morph into tasks of unimagi-nable enormity. Counselling teaches you that you do not have to believe the lies that depression tells you.

Depression is one of the country’s most serious health issues. The CDC says it affects one in six people and, as we have been reminded countless times, most recently with Williams’ death, it can be fatal. It now ranks as the eighth leading cause of death across the nation.

Mental health, including depression, are one of the nation’s weak links in health care. A Kaiser Family Foundation found that 60 percent of adults and 70 percent of chil-dren in need of mental health treatment get none. But, that may be changing.

“With Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act,” says CEO and President of Mental Health America of Colorado Don Mares,

“things are going to be changing.” Coverage of mental health “is one of ten essential health benefits that must be covered by insurance.”

Additionally, just last week, Colorado opened up a statewide mental health cri-sis hotline. One compelling reason for the hotline is Colorado’s painful suicide rank-ing. The state is listed by CDC as having the eighth highest suicide state in the country. The hotline will be staffed around the clock, 365 days a year. The number is 844-493-TALK (8255).

“We’ve talked about having something like this for a long time,” says Mares. Anyone

can call the hotline with total assurance of anonymity. The hotline is not going to solve the problem of suicide or mental illness but,

“when you need someone to talk to, when there’s no one else, it’s going to be there.”

Williams’ is not the only person of wealth or fame who has suffered with this illness. In fact, depression lands promi-nently on a ‘who’s who’ of amazing indi-viduals. Among those who have lived with depression include astronaut Buzz Aldrin, entertainer Jon Bon Jovi, author Agatha Christie, British statesman Winston legend Bob Dylan. These names only scratch the surface of famous individuals who have experienced depression.

Williams’ death, says Fox, is almost textbook. He was middle aged, may have been dealing with financial problems, his star may have begun to fade – his television series was cancelled after just one season – and was experiencing the on-set of medical problems. His former wife issued a state-ment last week saying Williams was in the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease.

The rates of mental illness, includ-ing depression, are roughly equal between whites and Latinos, says the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. But Latinos, especially males, are less likely to seek help. Too often say experts, Latinos are willing to link depression with ‘nervios,’ nervous problems.

Mares says passage of the ACA may put a dent in this dubious category. On the other hand, with Latinos the fastest growing population in the country, and many who need help speaking only Spanish, the men-tal health community may not have enough

Spanish-speaking professionals equipped to handle all those seeking treatment.

Depression may be, well, depressing. But there have been amazing strides in treat-ing it with a number of drugs. Two, in par-ticular, have shown great promise. “We are beginning to understand major mechanisms that are implicated in depression,” says Fox. Serotonin and norepinephrine, drugs which target the emotional parts of the brain, are now regularly prescribed to patients.

Both drugs work in altering chemical messengers that allow brain cells to com-municate with one another. But, despite the promise these drugs have shown, each comes with side effects. Among them are nausea, anxiety and agitation, difficulty in urination, insomnia and several more.

While there is a sadness with the loss of a personality like Williams, there is also an ironic upside. His depression, which he apparently struggled with and concealed for so many years in an amazing career, is now bathed in sunlight. It is grist for gossip but also thoughtful conversation among indi-viduals and families. Williams’ depression and unfortunate death have become the proverbial ‘teaching moment.’

“Robin Williams,” says Mares, “didn’t kill himself. His illness killed him.” If his death helps us come to understand this reality, than he will never be a sad and tragic statistic. He will be the next rung on the ladder of mental illness that we have just conquered.

Quizás no hay ciudad en el país que se haya beneficiado más con bases mili-tares que Aurora. Cuando el Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center admitia pacientes de las Guerras Mundiales I y II, tenía una de las estructuras más grandes del estado. El presidente Eisenhower recibió tratamiento en el hospital y John Kerry nació allí cuando su padre estaba siendo tratado de la tuber-culosis. La población de Aurora surgió lo mismo que su reputación positiva.

Tan bueno como Fitzsimmons fue para Aurora cuando era una institución viable del ejército, el cierre de la base trajo un crecimiento aún más grande. El local tiene ahora al Children’s Hospital y el UC Denver Anschutz Medical Campus y el futuro hos-pital de los Veteranos también va a ser construido allí. Juntas, las instituciones médicas ahora comprenden uno de los pasil-los médicos número uno del estado.

Según el representante del Estado, Jovan Melton, que representa al Distrito 41 en el Suroeste de Aurora, “Aurora está progresando mucho en nuestra transición de ser una comunidad de albergues a una gran fuerza para el desarrollo económico.

Quizás el proyecto de desarrollo económico más controvertido (y lucrativo) de Aurora es el Gaylord Hotel and Conference Center. Este centro de conferencias autóno-mo está siendo diseñado para competir por el negocio de convenciones en Colorado. En el 2012, el Comité de Desarrollo Económico de Colorado proporcionó al proyecto Gaylord 81.4 millones de dólares por medio del Acta de Turismo Regional. El hotel y centro de conferencias ha sido puesto en duda desde entonces. Un grupo de hoteles del centro de Denver que demandó detener los incentivos de Gaylord se vio obviamente amenazado por negocios que pueden ser extraídos del centro de Denver. Para Aurora, la demanda demuestra que ellos están siendo tomados seriamente como amenaza al desarrollo económico.

¿Quien la tiene? “Hay un componente genético para algunos y también hay com-ponentes hormonales”, dice Fox. Para las mujeres, la depresión puede llegar después de dar a luz. Ha sido conectada a la puber-tad en jovencitas y la menopausia en las mujeres maduras. Los ciclos menstruales también juegan un papel en la depresión. Además, los investigadores la han conectado a ciertas variables ambientales, incluyendo el matrimonio – para hombres y mujeres”, dice Fox. “El matrimonio puede ser un pro-tector”. Pero un matrimonio infeliz también puede ser la causa de la depresión. “Un matrimonio feliz puede ser la protección”.

Aun cuando el CDC dice que la may-oría de quienes sufren de la depresión son mujeres – el 70 por ciento – ellas son las más propensas a buscar tratamiento, dice Fox. Los hombres, agrega él, son más pro-pensos a soportarla.

“Es una experiencia complicada con muchas vueltas y revueltas”, dice Sarah, una persona que ha pasado por la depre-sión y que pidió no se usara su nombre. La depresión, dice ella recordando su prob-lema, es difícil de explicar a alguien que la puede reducir simplemente a la tristeza o simplemente un ataque temporal de tristeza. Buscar las palabras precisas, ella la describe como una melancolía que se puede consid-erar sin fin. Es “un sentimiento de apatía y sin conexión…tristeza y ansiedad…como la neblina del baño que simplemente no se puede limpiar”.

La señora de sonrisa fácil, amable que trabaja como administradora de oficina en el centro dice que la terapia le ayudó a com-prender lo que estaba sufriendo. También le enseñó el por qué aún la rutina más chica, incluyendo simplemente bajarse de la cama, se puede transformar en tareas enormes que una no se puede imaginar. La conse-jería le enseña a una que una no tiene que creer en todas las mentiras que aconseja la depresión.

La depresión es una de las enferme-dades más serias del país. El CDC dice que afecta a una de seis personas, como se nos recuerda con demasiada frecuencia, más recientemente con la muerte de Williams y puede ser fatal. Ahora se encuentra entre las ocho mayores causas de la muerte en el país.

Los problemas de salud mental, incluy-

endo la depresión, son uno de los lazos más débiles de la salud. Una fundación de la Familia Kaiser descubrió que el 60 por ciento de los adultos y el 70 por ciento de los niños que necesitan tratamientos de salud mental no lo encuentran. Pero, eso puede estar cambiando.

“Con Obamacare, El Acta de Servicios Baratos”, dice el CEO y Presidente of Mental Health America of Colorado, Don Mares, “las cosas van a estar cambiando”. La cobertura de salud mental “es uno de los diez ben-eficios esenciales de salud que deben ser cubiertos por el seguro”.

Además, apenas la semana pasada, Colorado abrió una línea de emergencia estatal para crisis de salud mental. Un moti-vo importante para la existencia de la línea de emergencia es el estado actual y doloroso del suicido en Colorado. El estado está en la lista de los CDC que tienen el índice más alto del suicidio en el país. La línea de emer-gencia tendrá atención 24/7, 365 días al año. El número es 844-493TALK (8255).

“Nosotros hemos hablado acerca de tener esto por mucho tiempo”, dice Mares. Cualquier persona puede llamar a la línea de emergencia con la seguridad de permanecer anónimo. La línea de emergencia no resolverá el problema del suicidio o la salud mental pero, “cuando usted necesita alguien con quien hablar, cuan-do no hay nadie, la va a encontrar”.

Williams no es la única persona rica o famosa que ha sufrido de esta enfermedad. En realidad, la depresión llega prominente-mente a una cantidad increíble de adultos del ‘quien es quien’. Entre esos que han vivido con la depresión incluyendo el astro-nauta Buzz Aldrin, el actor Jon Bon Jovi, la autora Agatha Christie, el estadista inglés Winston Churchill, la princesa Diana, el periodista American famoso Mike Wallace y la leyenda musical Bob Dylan. Estos nom-bres sólo tocan la superficie de las personas famosas que han experimentado la depre-sión.

La muerte de Williams dice Fox, es casi un libro de texto. Él era de edad madura, pudo haber tenido problemas finan-cieros, su estrellato pudo haber comenzado a decaer – su serie de televisión fue can-celada después de una sola temporada – y estaba experimentando problemas médicos. Su anterior esposa hizo una declaración en la cual dice que Williams estaba en la etapa inicial de la enfermedad de Parkinson.

Los índices de enfermedad mental, que incluye la depresión, son más o menos iguales para los blancos, los latinos, dice la National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Pero los latinos, especialmente los hombres, son menos propensos a buscar ayuda. Con demasiada frecuencia dicen los expertos, los latinos tienen la tendencia de asociar la depresión con los ‘nervios’, problemas nerviosos.

Mares dice que el paso de ACA puede socavar un poco esta dudosa categoría. La depresión puede ser, digamos, depri-mente. Pero se han hecho adelantos impre-sionantes para el tratamiento con diferentes drogas. Dos, especialmente, han demostra-do grandes promesas. “Nosotros estamos comenzando a entender los mecanismos más grandes que están implicados en la depresión”, dice Fox. Serotonin y norepi-nephrine, drogas que atacan las partes emo-cionales del cerebro, están siendo prescritas a los pacientes.

Ambas drogas trabajan en alterar los mensajeros químicos que permiten a las células del cerebro comunicarse entre sí. Pero, a pesar de la promesa que demuestran estas drogas, no dejan de tener efectos secundarios. Entre ellas están la náusea, la ansiedad y la agitación, dificultades en la orina, insomnio y otras más.

Cuando hay tristeza con la perdida de una persona como Williams, también existe irónicamente algo bueno. Su depresión, con la cual aparentemente el luchaba y escondía por muchos años en una carrera asombrosa, ahora esta bañada de luz. Es la semilla del chisme pero también de conversación inteli-gente entre individuos y familias. La depre-sión y muerte desafortunada de Williams se han convertido en el proverbial ‘momento de aprender’.

“Robin Williams”, dice Mares, “no se mató solo. Su enfermedad lo mató”. Si su muerte nos ayuda a comprender esta reali-dad, que nunca va a ser una estadística triste y trágica. Él será el siguiente paso de la salud mental que apenas hemos conquistado.

that it’s only pre-season but fans are sharing “how sweet is it that the Denver Broncos have man-aged to knock off two of the NFC’s top potential Super Bowl contenders” – and in fairly dominating fashion at that. Last

week Denver beat the Seattle Seahawks in Denver gaining some redemption in a game that has no bearing on the regular season. Denver fans have heard that quite a bit in the past two weeks: it doesn’t count. Oh but to Denver fans it does.

This past weekend Denver traveled to San Francisco to face the 49er’s in San Francisco’s ridiculously high-priced stadium making it the most expensive football venue to ever be built. The stands filled with fans draped in red and gold were hyped about the game and the high-end stadium’s tech-nologies that makes being a fan a little more comfortable in San Francisco. That hype, however, was short-lived after just the first quarter. Denver’s one and two quarterbacks

threw for a combined 22-27 for 207 yards and two touchdowns. By the end of the game and the third string in, the Broncos added two more touchdowns and two field goals to pitch the 49ers a shut out in their stadium-debut game.

Denver was firing on all cylinders Sunday afternoon in the Bay area with a defense that has obviously stepped up their game from last season which most fans hope will translate into the regular season. This Saturday the Broncos will host the Houston Texans at Sports Authority at Mile High. As the preseason comes to an end nec-essary cuts will be made before next week and Denver fans will likely see less and less of the first string and more of the guys push-ing to make the team.
