PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
FY20/21 is a significant milestone in the history of Shan You – Shan You’s Silver Jubilee. We
organised our first virtual concert to celebrate 25 years of serving the community. Shan You
has grown from a humble counselling centre to Shan You that provides clinical service, social
care and professional training. This journey would not have been possible without the
unwavering and continual support of our committed stakeholders, generous donors, dedicated
volunteers and passionate staff members. At this juncture, on behalf of Shan You Management
Committee, I like to express our gratitude to all who have made it possible for us to make an
impact in the lives of those we served.
Inevitably, FY20/21 had been another challenging year for Shan You. The COVID-19 pandemic
had made public fund-raising almost impossible, while needs for our mental health (Clinical
Counselling) and social care (Food Rations and Free Meals) services had increased
significantly. Thankfully, despite all the challenges and uncertainties, Shan You continued to
receive donations. This speaks volumes about the resilience and compassion of our community.
Our core service, counselling and casework, saw a record number of cases with many complex
issues including stress, anxiety, depression, compulsive behaviours, marital and relationship
issues as well as family and parenting issues. We offered subsidised counselling to those with
financial difficulties as we are committed to providing accessible and effective counselling
services that enhance the mental and emotional well-being of our clients. In FY20/21, we had
provided counselling to a total of 440 cases and completed a total of 1,749 counselling sessions.
To better support the psychological resilience of the community during the COVID-19 pandemic,
Shan You implemented 2 new counselling initiatives in FY20/21 – Shan You 25 and Because
You Care. Shan You 25 had supported full-time students, seniors and unemployed persons in
the community by providing 5 counselling sessions at a special subsidised rate to each
approved applicant. Because You Care had supported Frontline Healthcare Workers working
in public healthcare institutions by providing 5 complimentary counselling sessions to each
approved applicant.

Shan You’s collaboration with Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC) has given us invaluable
experience with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). We are working on renewing
the collaboration. MBCT training was put on hold due to the COVID-19 restrictions and safety
measures.
Shan You Professional Training (SYPT) also had been suspended due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Our social care services at Shan You Wellness Community (SYWC) had to be suspended or
reduced to comply with safety measures. Nonetheless, with some modification, our free meal
and food ration services continued, so as to meet the needs of our service users and to provide
a sense of normalcy. It is important to keep social isolation at bay. The pre-packed meals were
warmly welcomed by our beneficiaries. To promote our healthy meal objective, fruits were given
out with the meals. More than 17,350 free meals were given out. The food ration packs provided
assurance that the recipients’ sustenance is taken care of and allow them to better manage
emotional stress. To align with the national healthy lifestyle initiative, food ration packs are
prepared according to recipients’ needs. This service had provided 2,049 food ration packs to
families in need in FY20/21.
Going forward, we will stay true to our vision and mission to provide excellent services to all,
regardless of race, religion and ability to pay. As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve,
our modes of reaching out to our service users, beneficiaries, volunteers, donors and partners
also have to change to suit the new normal.
In closing, we remain deeply grateful for the generous and continual support from MSF,
Community Chest, NCSS, community partners, donors, volunteers and all stakeholders. We
look forward to your strong support and collaboration in the coming years to provide impactful
programmes and services.

Shan You is a non-profit social service organisation set up in 1995 to provide professional
counselling and social care services based on the guiding values of compassion, morality,
mindfulness and wisdom. Our services are available to all in the community, regardless of race,
religion and ability to pay.
Shan You is a registered society and a charity with the status of Institutions of a Public
Character, and a full member of the National Council of Social Service (NCSS). Shan You is
supported by Community Chest, corporate and individual donors.

• Principal Funding Sources of the Charity
The Charity is financially supported by donations from members, general public and
government grants. The principal funding sources are NCSS Community Chest for the
Counselling & Casework programme and Care & Share movement funding support for
capability and capacity building including new/enhanced programmes and critical existing
needs.
• Policies
Conflict of interest
The Charity have set in place a Code of Conduct & Conflict of Interest Policy for board
members and staff to declare actual or potential conflicts of interest to the Board at the
earliest opportunity.
Reserves Position and Policy
The maximum operating reserves for Shan You shall be five years of the amount of the
annual operating expenditure.
• Remuneration
In the FY, there were only 2 staff received total remuneration exceeding $100,000. They did
not serve as a governing board member of the charity.
In the FY, there is no paid staff, being a close member of the family belonging to the
Executive Head or a governing board member of the charity.

SHAN YOU COUNSELLING CENTRE
Counselling Services
For 25 years, Shan You Counselling Centre (SYCC) has been providing accessible and
affordable counselling services to our community. Our clients include youths, adults, seniors,
couples, and families presenting with a wide spectrum of mental health, relationship and other
issues.
To better support the psychological and emotional resilience of people in the community during
the COVID-19 pandemic, SYCC implemented 2 new counselling initiatives in FY20 – Shan You
25 and Because You Care.
Shan You 25 aimed to support full-time students, seniors and unemployed persons in the
community. It provided 5 counselling sessions at a special subsidised rate to each approved
applicant. It was available to full-time students aged 16-25 years, unemployed persons aged
21 years and above and seniors aged 55 years and above.
Because You Care aimed to support Frontline Healthcare Workers (FHWs) working in public
healthcare institutions. It provided 5 complimentary counselling sessions to each approved
FHW.
The counselling services at SYCC were provided by a team of psychologists and counsellors
who specialised in providing evidence-based and mindfulness-based counselling. A substantial
body of research has shown that mindfulness-based interventions are effective in reducing
psychological and emotional distress, most notably anxiety and depression, and improving
daily functioning and quality of life in persons living with mental health challenges.
SYCC has seen a steady increase in our counselling cases over the past 3 years. In FY20, our
centre had seen a total of 368 new cases, provided counselling to a total of 440 cases and
completed a total of 1,749 counselling sessions.

In FY20, SYCC conducted a series of 3 interactive webinars on some common counselling
topics. There was a total of 134 registered participants for the 3 webinars.
In the webinar “My Parents Don’t Understand Me”, our counsellor Wei Xin shone some light on
this not-so-often discussed topic of the common challenges in the parent-child relationship. Wei
Xin spoke about how personal and impersonal forces contribute to the parent-child relational
gap and how being reactive widens this gap as well as offered practical suggestions to address
the issue.
In the webinar “So What’s Counselling, Really?”, our counsellor Ga Li shared about the process
of counselling, clarified some common misconceptions and explored when counselling could
be helpful. She also offered some simple skills that would help participants to listen and support
others better.
In the webinar “Anxiety & Depression: Can Counselling Help?”, our counsellor Pao-er explored
how counselling could help with these common mental health issues and shared how we can
better support one another.
The Elephant in Our Community
The iamEllie.sg Instagram profile was started in September 2018 as part of our Elephant in Our
Community public education campaign on mental health. In FY20, a total of 66 mental health-
related posts were uploaded on iamEllie.sg. At the end of FY20, there were more than 3,300
followers on iamEllie.sg. As the onset of most mental health conditions typically occurs before
the age of 30, iamEllie.sg Instagram continues to be an important platform to reach out to young
persons in the online community.

Shan You Wellness Community believes in the motto of “Heathy Mind, Healthy Body and
Healthy Living. It provides a variety of regular programmes to benefit our clients by addressing
their physical, mental and social wellbeing. This is aligned with our national interest to promote
active living where deliberate efforts have been made to include encourage healthy body
movement, healthy eating and talks that are educational for our elderly folk.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
The Community Partnership department co-ordinates fundraising events, community and
corporate partnerships as well as volunteer management.
Shan You 25th Anniversary Charity Night
This is the first time Shan You organised a virtual concert on 18 October 2020. The Concert
was held to celebrate our Silver Jubilee. It was broadcast live in our FaceBook. We are grateful
to the donors who donated online or through PayNow. The event raised more than $30,000.

Free Meal and Food Ration Distribution Services
Shan You continues to raise fund for our social care services like free meal service which
provides lunch to elderly and free food rations to individuals and families who are in financial
difficulties. These services are also supported by our warm-hearted volunteers and generous
donors.
Giving Month Donation Drive 2021
This campaign targets corporate and community organisations donors. More than $51,000 was
raised from these compassionate organisations despite in the challenging COVID-19
environment.
