Mystery PhotoCan you identify this Accordionist? She is a well known ACR member!

Do we have a mystery photo of you? Please contact Sheri Mignano.

One Armed AccordionistMember, Tom Murphy, tore a muscle in his right arm last month and is currently NOT playing with the ACR fun band. However, with his new shoulder straps, he is looking well and hopefully recovering quickly. We expect he will be spending more time practicing his bass note playing.

Visiting the ACR from Pittsburg is Lou and Jane Di Maggio pictured here enjoying intermission during the August program. Lou is an accomplished accordionist who studied under Angelo Cagnazzo and succeeded Dick Contino on the Horace Heidt Show. Lou and Jane are members of the San Francisco Accordion Club.

Dick Contino AppearingDick Contino will appear in a free concert on Saturday, September 29 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at John Muir Amphitheater in Waterfront Park in Martinez. Please join the MTZ Refinery Complex Alumni, Shell and Shell Chemical in welcoming Dick Contino to Martinez by attending this free concert. There will be food and drinks available for purchase. All profits will be donated to the Contra Costa County Hospital Volunteers for their projects at the hospital.

East Bound to Salt Lake CityUnable to get his Concerto Accordion repaired locally, Joe Chiesa and wife Donna decided to make a trip on the first of August to Paul Pasquali’s showroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, along with all the accessories needed for the operation of the accordion, hoping it would help locate the trouble.

“We were dressed and on the road at 5:00am driving straight throught to Elko, Nevada. There, we had a wonderful visit with Joe’s Daughter.” says Donna. “The next day we drove into Salt Lake City. You best have a working G.P.S. unit, which helped us find Accordions International,” she added.

“Paul was very gracious with his hospitality. He took us to lunch and, best of all, promptly set up shop to make the adjustments and repairs to the Concerto.” they claimed. “He was very supportive, and we were able to leave a few days earlier than expected, which gave us more time to visit with Joe’s daughter on the way home.”

They also raved that, “His place of business is a must-see; wall-to-wall accordions, including his new model, the 250 Concerto.”

They concluded, “We got to experience Hot August Nights in Reno and saw many wonderful old classic cars. The next day we headed home and were grateful for the safe and event-filled trip.”

Diamond AnniversaryCongratulations to two ACR members, Joseph and Doris Belluzzo, who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary held at their son’s beautiful home in the Fountain Grove area.

Joe Chiesa played accordion, providing the music for the occasion. During the party, the Belluzo’s received a phone call from family and friends who were, at that moment, co-celebrating the occasion in Italy.

In Honored MemoryMember, Jim Martini died at home in Santa Rosa, Sunday, August 19 at the age of 63.He was president of Martini and Prati Winery, inherited a love of cooking for family and friends and was known as an accomplished accordion player. He also loved fishing, flying, and going on cruises and especially loved Hawaii.

Jim Martini played in the group ‘Vintage Squeeze’ with Marie Meredith. He was active in the ACR in the early days and was a very talented player and a friend to us all. His cheerful manner will be missed.

His wife, Jeani, is asking if anyone has a video from one of the past picnics or dances of Jim Martini playing with ‘Vintage Squeeze.’ It would mean the world to her as she has no recorded clip of Jim playing.

Scholarship Fund is RisingThe ACR Scholarship fund has increased to over $574 due to final picnic raffle income and some generous donations from our members and friends. Thank you to everyone who contributed over the past month.

Mystery Guest—Ann AlbertoniFrom Playing Notes to Taking Notes

by Sheri Mignano

Whether playing notes on her Grande Vox accordion as a young lady or taking efficient notes for the Accordion Club of the Redwoods, Ann Albertoni has been a

great supporter, loyal member, and officer who has served ACR for many years!

The soft-spoken elegantly attired ACR Secretary, armed with certificates in cosmetology and possessing business acumen earned in various collegiate business courses, has faithfully fulfilled her obligations to the club. She provides accurate descriptions and logs as she records the Board of Directors’ meetings and the club meetings as related to our organization’s success.

Ann grew up on her parents’ Petaluma ranch where the long, arduous agricultural days absorbed her time before and after school. She performed all the chores and responsibilities associated with a family-operated, fully functioning ranch, and she learned to ride Western in order to be able to herd cattle. She rode her favorite horse “Babe” in many downtown Petaluma parades and rodeos.

In the early 1950s she attended St. Vincent’s Grammar School and High School. Her popularity and charming demeanor in high school awarded her the hotly contested title of “Homecoming Queen” at St. Vincent’s. While a student, she expressed an interest in learning the guitar; however,

the curriculum consisted mainly of piano recitals and choral music concerts. Sadly, neither the guitar nor the accordion was a choice as a musical instrument in the 1950s.

Some of her cousins had taken up the accordion so it only seemed natural to pursue it if the guitar was not available. As a result, she studied accordion privately at the Petaluma studios of the late Guido Boccaleoni (whose widow, Iris, is still a member of our club). She learned all

the well-known tunes such as Lady of Spain, O Detto O Sole & Neapolitan Nights. She was also inspired by listening to the songs played on Western radio stations and learned to play the popular standards such as Riders in the Sky and My Merry Oldsmobile.

Ann remained somewhat shy about playing her accordion in public so her

sister Virginia has kept the accordion that she played while growing up in Petaluma.

I hope you’ll stop by to say “Hi” to Ann and let her know how much you appreciate her reliable help both as an officer in the club and as a lady of grace who has played an integral part of the accordion club scene in Petaluma.

KEITH CHURCH, one of our ACR scholarship recipients, began the program with his selections of Has Anybody Seen My Gal, The Supermarket and Lady of Spain on his Crucianelli Pan accordion.

TONY RAYMANN with his Parz chromatic accordion, and his charming smile gave us, Under the Double Eagle, a great French song and a medley of the Heidelberg University Drinking song and Libiamo.

SHERI MIGNIANO with her Petosa and RALPH MUSCATELL with his Strauser serenaded us with Tutti Mi Chiamano Bionda, Marcia Dei Bersaglieri and a medley of Neapolitan Nights and O’Marie.

Entertaining us during intermission was our ‘Day of the Accordion’ favorite, TOM CORDONI.

The duo of GWYN AND JOHN LISTER, (Mother and son) followed with their renditions of What a Difference A Day Makes, Crazy and If I Were a Rich Man from the musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” John sang (and acted out) the last song.

BART BENINCO filled out the evening with a spectacular performance. His selections included Tango dello Rose, Nina Mazurka, A Media Luz Tango, Arriverderci Roma, Chitara Romana, Andalucia, Accordiana, Swinging Shepard Blues, Elephant Walk, Espana Cani, Non Ti scordar Di Me, Gay Rancero and ended with The Peanut Vendor.
