Dear Friends, Well Wishers,
It is my pleasure presenting before you activity and financial report of Anjali for the year 2017-18.
Health care activities by Anjali started about 29 years ago. During all these years there have been major changes /modifications /up gradation of buildings and medical equipments in phased manner. During the current year there were changes /modifications to increase facilities and convenience of hospital patients. A bus was added to make eye camp logistics easy. A central oxygen generating unit was installed to ensure uninterrupted supply of oxygen on each hospital bed. These were efforts to consolidate and strengthen hospital services.
As part of women's program efforts were made to keep women members motivated and develop their skills and capabilities. Their true understanding was reflected the way they took loans. Their capabilities and grasping was realized when on their own they took decision to and planned celebrations of 8th March, Women's Day in 15 villages.
Tree plantation work continued during the year, at our efforts to keep the environment balanced. During the current year instead of planting new trees, the trees already planted were comprehensively taken care of.
All the activities of Anjali have been possible because of your cooperation, warmth, guidance and assistance. Looking forward to continued cooperation, assistance and support in coming years.
Do plan a visit to Anjali at your convenience, it will be our pleasure.
With best Wishes,
Anita Shah

Anjali was established in the year 1988. The activities of the organisation were initiated on 29th January 1989.The founders after completing higher education founded Anjali in order to use their skills & capabilities for the poor and the needy.Anjali is a voluntary organisation based in village Ranasan. Ranasan with population of 5000 is a village in Talod taluka of Sabarkantha district in north Gujarat in India.Beginning was made with health activities, the poor and the needy being the target population. The health activities developed progressively and other activities were included as the needs were perceived At present the activities of Anjali are, a 75 bed Anjali Hospital, women's programm in 48 interior villages (on the platform of saving groups) and environment enrichment programm. Organisation is inclined towards development programmes for children, youth, and villages The soil in Ranasan & in its vicinity is rocky & sandy and the climate is dry, windy, hot during 7-8 months of the year and cold during the winter months. The rainfall is less and unpredictable. There are two rivers which run if there is ample of rainfall. There are few lakes & other sources of water. The principal vocation of the people is agriculture. There are no industries in the vicinity. The level of education is low. Most of the population is economically & socially weak. The majority of the population of this area comes from the communities of Thakors, Dalits, Ravals, Vagharis, Banjaras, Vadi, Pagi, Rabarisamaj and migrant adivasi labourers. Most of them earn their livelihood as agriculture or miscellaneous labour. They have not made much progress either economically or socially. This group of people along with other economically weak & distressed section of the population are the main beneficiaries of Anjali's activities.

(1) Anjali Hospital The activitiy in numbers is as follows:

For any hospital availability of Oxygen is basic & an essential requirement. A hospital without oxygen cannot be imagined. Slowly oxygen cylinders are being replaced by central oxygen pipelines which run throughout the hospital in all the places where oxygen is utilized. Multiple big cylinders are kept in one place and oxygen is fed in the pipeline. The oxygen cylinders have to be procured and frequently empty cylinders have to be replaced, many times at night also, the cost of all this is significant. Shri Chandravadanbhai Shah & Smt. Ushaben Shah of Mumbai donated Rs 20 lacs for Central Oxygen Generating unit which concentrates oxygen from air and feeds it in to the oxygen pipelines continuously. Both of them are providing significant financial support to Anjali since last 8 years. Their contribution for the central oxygen unit has significantly brought down expenditure on purchase of oxygen. On behalf of Anjali and the villagers of this area we are thankful to both of them.Since last many years Eye work is being done. As new medical instruments are available old instruments are replaced or upgraded in the Eye department. It has been possible to reach out to faraway tribal areas as well as interior villages through eye camps. The eye camp activity in figures is as follows:

Camp patients diagnosed with cataract from interior villages are brought in bus and after surgery on next day they are taken back to where they came from in bus. Anjali is registered Base hospital with NPCB Sabarkantha. Like every year this year also surgical operation camps were organized. 40% of OPD patients in Surgical OPD are in need of some surgical procedure. In tribal areas & interior villages people are eagerly waiting for surgical operation camps. The figures of surgical operation camps are as follows:

2) Women's Activities:
Process of empowerment of women through saving groups is going on steadily. Yes, workers of Anjali play the role of facilitator, the results of which are very good. Members regularly take loans and accomplish their work/needs. It seems that their self-confidence and self-esteem have also increased. Whenever they want break from their busy daily routine, they like to go out on tour. This time they went to Poicha (near Vadodara) and enjoyed.
During annual meetings held at Anjali, we take one topic which is useful to them. When you ask them about their health they will say very well but do something about my legs, joints are very painful. These women have to do much physical work, they take pain killers themselves. So this year during annual meetings at Anjali they were given information about joint pains and Diabetes. Information was given regarding joint structure, cause of pain and how relief can be obtained. Explanation was also given regarding how to make joints strong & get relief from pain by different type of exercises. They were made to do exercises which they can do at home. Everyone had different and special experience. Those who found it interesting & useful have continued. People at home are also helping them. Those who had little education recalled their school days, gained knowledge with fun. Information about Diabetes and Blood Pressure was also given along with. Gujarat has become capital of Diabetes. They were explained about the

present situation. Causes of Diabetes, how it can be prevented and what care has to be taken if one has Diabetes and importance of taking medicines regularly were explained. Blood sugar of all the members was done with Glucometer. Blood Pressure measurement and weight were taken. Those diagnosed of having Diabetes were promptly put on treatment. Those who had Diabetes but were not taking medicines could see the blood sugar high and started medicines. 732 members were examined out of which 10 had high blood sugar and 28 had high blood pressure, they started taking medicines. They were also informed about importance of nutrition in maintaining healthy body. These women are neither careful about their nutrition nor they take nutrition seriously. Social conditions also play a role.
The concept envisaged when we started giving seeds for various vegetables to them for kitchen garden seems to be fulfilled. They had understanding that vegetables have to be planted in agricultural farms. As they do not have enough space they were not able to grow vegetables. After getting seeds of various vegetables that grow on creepers, they are growing organic vegetables for their families and sharing with neighbors. We are pleased to see this happening.
On the occasion of Silver Jubilee celebration of Anjali each of 1700 women members were given plants of fruit bearing trees. Trees like Gauva, mulberry, Rayan, Amla, Jamun, Sitafal& lemon are seen at many of their homes. The trees have started bearing fruits. They eagerly take us to see the trees. We also feel happy seeing the results of their understanding and hard work.
Till now the adolescent girls program was conducted in village and was open to school going as well as non-school going girls. Adolescent girls were participating but they were not taking it seriously and many time new girls will be seen in the meetings. This year onwards we are going to 4 primary schools and 7 secondary schools in 11 villages and conducting awareness meetings with adolescent girls. The teachers are cooperative and the girls got good environment. The program is of 2-3 hours duration once in a month. Themes like hygiene. Menstruation, cleanliness and anatomy is explained using various mediums and repeated in order to ensure their understanding and remembering it. Were able to regularly reach out to more adolescent girls.
Members of 39 saving groups showed their understanding/ empowerment on the occasion of Women's day on 9th of March,2018. We inform & tell them, give a program and a rally takes place in a village is normal. But something different happened. Their enthusiasm & confidence was such that they did the planning ,made the program, arranged sound system & prepared

slogans. We joined in their programm. The effect seen, of voluntarily planned program was different. Villagers gave good opinion about the program. They came together, planned & implemented a programm to be held in public. This was encouraging for us.
3) Environment Activity:
Every year in March there are discussions about sites of tree plantation, types of trees, nurseries for saplings and marking locations of trees.
For this year a survey of all the 4500 trees planted till date was done. It was observed that many trees were growing very slowly, some were dead. It was decided to change these trees this year. 800 trees were changed and new trees planted. The area was divided in to five blocks, all the tree guards were painted and numbered. Instead of planting new trees efforts like regular watering, giving manure were made to see that each planted sapling becomes a tree.

4) Staff Activity:
All the staff members in cooperation of fellow staff members did good work. Doing the same work daily brings in monotonousness. We all are fond of celebrating various festivals and occasions. Celebrating religious & national festivals with all the staff members brings in freshness in the daily work and increases enthusiasm. This year festivals like Republic day, Independence day, Sharadpurnima, and Janmashtmi were celebrated with staff members and interpersonal relations strengthened.
