EDITOR'S PAGE

The Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society, Inc. will meet on January 9, 1982 at Nichols Memorial Library, 1 Cabot Avenue, Gadsden, Alabama at 1:30 P.M. Mr. Jerry B. Jones, our President, will be the speaker, and the subject will be: "Researching Local Land Records."

Dr. Gary B. Mills, Associate Professor of History, University of Alabama (Gadsden) gave an excellent program on Civil War claims filed with the Southern Claims Commission on October 3, 1981.

The October 1981 and January 1982 issues, Volume XX, No. 2 and No. 3, are being mailed together. The illness and death of my brother. Dr. Thornton R. Cleek, prevented the publication of the October issue on time. I spent most of the months of September and October in Asheboro, North Carolina.

The Camp Family Association has been reactivated, and THE CAMP BULLETIN is being published again. There are no dues, but it is requested that an annual publication fee of $5.00 be paid, it is expected the Bulletin will be a quarterly publication. Address: Camp Family Association, Paul K. Camp, Editor, Route 4, Box 912, Sanford, North Carolina 27330.

A joyous and peaceful Holiday Season and New Year to all.

The fol lowing informat ion was r ece ived from Mr. Kendall Coffman, 4909 Woodstone, #1801, San Antonio , TX 78230.

I recently visited a library and found Volumes X, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and XI, no. 1, published from Oct. 1971 to July 1972. I studied with much interest the 1850 Cherokee County, Alabama Census. This census contains Jacob Coffman and his children:

Lovell born August 22, 1800 James born March 14, 1802 Maryan (Polly) born Nov. 30, 1803 Francis born August 25, 1805 David born Sept. 19, 1808 Jane born June 3, 1809 Elizabeth born Jan. 1, 1811 Savannah born Jan. 31, 1813 Adah born Jan. 1, 1817 (sic) Louisa born Jan. 1, 1817 (sic)

Adah married a Mr. Cobb and her family is listed below Jacob on the 1850 Census. Louisa married Claiborne Puckett and they are listed above Jacob on the 1860 Census. Jane married Jacob McLaughlin. Her children and grandchildren were living with Jacob Coffman and Louisa Puckett in the 1860 Census.

Adah Cobb, Louisa Puckett and Jane McLaughlin families remained in Cherokee County along with their brother David's family. I found these families in the 1850-1880 Census.

I am writing because I am interested in the descendants of Jacob Coffman and wonder if more information is available on his grandchildren who married and lived in Cherokee County between 1860-1880. It seems many records were destroyed in a courthouse fire. Has a family history been compiled on the Cherokee County Coffman family?

Note from E d i t o r : Adah Coffman (a l so sometimes l i s t e d as Adeline) marr ied David G. Cobb, born 1802; d i ed 1848, b u r i e d United B a p t i s t Cemet e r y nea r Cedar Bluff , Cherokee C o . , AL. Rev. Wil l iam A. The Cherokee County Courthouse, AL burned in May 1882. We have few records before t h a t d a t e .

As f a r as I know, no family h i s t o r y of the Cherokee C o . , AL Coffman family has been p u b l i s h e d .

Jacob Coffman marr ied Nov. 1 1 , 1799 in J e f f e r s o n C o . , TN, Nancy Walker. He se rved as P r i v a t e , Bunch's Regiment, East Tennessee M i l i t i a i n the War of 1812.
