In the name of God, the infi nitely Compassionate and Merciful.Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds.

The Compassionate, the Merciful. Ruler on the Day of Reckoning. You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help.

Guide us on the straight path,the path of those who have received your grace;

Assalamu alaikum and welcome to the 2015 edition of Al-Hidayah Magazine.

After 29 years of education, Al-Taqwa College is dramatically expanding. We are now educating over 1800 students with a vision to expand further.

Th is was a bumper year with a new organisational structure and extra staff to accommodate our growing student rate.

Th ere were many new initiatives introduced this year as well, with new language classes, extra curricular activities, excursions, incursions and camps.

Our Vision Night was again a great success, along with the VCE Graduation, Grade 6 Graduation, 100 days of prep, Fete Day and the ever expanding Art Exhibition. Th e College also purchased a new

marquee to hold larger activities on a regular basis. Th e prep orientation was a great success with a bumper crowd. we had 95% attendance from our new families which was extremely encouraging to see.

We look forward to 30 years of education next year with bigger and better activities for our students, staff and community.

A special thanks to our Principal, Mr Hallak, as well as the members of the School Council for their support, guidance, encouragement and tireless contribution throughout the year. May Allah (swt) keep us on the right path and may we have peace in ourselves.

Principal’s MessageWelcome to our Yearbook for 2015! Th e year saw a variety of events and rather hectic schedules for myself and my executives. We streamlined and improved the curriculum, updated policies and procedures to be compliant within the respective areas. In terms of strategic planning, we put in tremendous eff ort as a team and I must admit, that 2015 was a fruitful year, Alhamdullillah. Th e College has grown from strength to strength with our enrolments increasing each year and subsequently increased staff and classrooms along

with other facilities to support student wellbeing. I am thankful to Allah (swt) for the blessing bestowed upon us and would also like to thank all education and administration staff for their contributions and support to the College, without which we would not have achieved the current success.

During the year, the College had some visitors and outstanding activities which I would like to highlight.

Principal’s Message (cont’d)Students Overseas Study Tour Program YIISI students for Immersion ProgramOur sister school in Jakarta sent a group of students and teachers in Years 7 and 8 who arrived in Melbourne on March 12 and stayed for two weeks. Th ey settled in nicely with our homestay families and I thank those families who accommodated the students during their stay. Whilst they were here, our guests joined our Year 8 classrooms and visited Camp Coorong, Buchan Caves, Sovereign Hill, Ballarat Wildlife Park, the Docklands, Yarra River, Victoria Muslim Museum, Victoria Market and the Fitzroy Gardens. Th e accompanying teacher/Head of Secondary, Mr Zulkarnain Jabbar, had done a wonderful job chaperoning the students.

At Camp Coorong, our Indonesian students had a good time with our students, and spent time mingling with each other, exchanging knowledge on studies and culture between Indonesia and Australia.

Art ExhibitionWe had a preview of the Art Exhibition with a morning tea which took place on 5 October in the College’s multipurpose hall. Th e theme was “Get Inspired” and the Exhibition was organised by our Art Faculty Leader Ms Samara Osman. Our guests were Councillor Intaj Khan, representing the Mayor, Wyndham City Council and Ms Anne Smith, Arts Education Programs Manager, Independent Schools of Victoria. Th e Art Exhibition was showcased once again to the public at the Pacifi c Werribee Shopping Centre on 27-29 November. Th e community was encouraged to attend the event where our students’ interesting and creative paintings were exhibited. Some staff were also in attendance to answer community questions.

VisitorsOn March 21, we had the pleasure of a visit by the Pahang Education delegation comprising mainly state education offi cials and students, led by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob. A presentation was held in our Boardroom . Also accompanying the trip, which was funded by the Pahang Government, was the Principal of SMK Pelindung, Kuantan, Datin Sri Junaini Kassim.I was particularly moved with their positive and inspiring comments about our College.

He said he was particularly impressed when he visited the Al-Taqwa College here where students were taught the moderate and enlightened perceptions of Islam, countering the negatives which are promoted by extremists.

SMK St Th omas Principal, Asruddin Abas said his school’s contact with Al-Taqwa College also began in 2010 when a Pahang education delegation visited the progressive school. Th e friendship was cemented when Al-Taqwa Principal and teachers visited St Th omas the following year and it has blossomed since then.

Vision NightVision Night was held on November 12. Th is year the special event had a multicultural theme to celebrate the diversity of the students and staff at the College, with a particular focus on commonality in diversity within our beloved country Australia to promote and support a shared national identity. Th e evening started with a grand entry of world fl ags led by the Australian and Indigenous fl ags accompanied by the infamous historical tune “We are one but we are many” sung beautifully by the Al-Taqwa College choir students. We also had a member of the One Fire Aboriginal Dance Group, Geoff Tye who gave the night a true Indigenous experience through his Didgeridoo. Th roughout the night, the audience lived the journey of a refugee in Australia acted out on stage by primary students. We had special guests who made special eff orts to witness Al-Taqwa College’s Vision Night and value their much inspired speeches and I take this opportunity to thank:• Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton AM, Victoria Police• Ms Lois Peeler, Executive Director, Worawa Aboriginal College• Councillor Intaj Khan, Wyndham City Council.

Vision Night also acknowledged student achievements through an awards ceremony packed with gifts and certifi cates for many students and the night ended with a heartfelt mesmerising play by the College’s talented secondary girls and a Dorothea Mackellar Poem recited by Wafa Saeed to remind us of how much we all love our sunburnt country, Australia.

I thank all the staff and students involved in this event. It was a ground-breaking event and we were overwhelmed with a crowd of more than 400 people! Many performances showcased by our talented students who were from diff erent many nationalities, cultures and backgrounds – it was rich and colourful as well as vibrant!

VCE Night HeldTh e VCE Graduation Night marked the completion of their schooling at Al-Taqwa College, held on Wednesday 25 November at Grand Star Receptions. It was pleasing to see that the hall was packed with 350 students, parents, staff and special guests. Cr Heather Marcus attended, giving a speech and presenting awards to students. I hope our students take the advice of the speakers which were inspiring and hopefully assist them with their future careers, InshaAllah. It was good to see our graduates kiss their parents at the Graduation, to show their appreciation of bringing them up, nurturing and supporting them throughout their lives. I believe it was a touching moment for all mums and dads!

I wish to quote part of Cr Heather Marcus’ speech during the VCE Night:I would like to acknowledge Mr Hallak again for his vision in establishing this Islamic College for all of our students who live here in the Western Suburbs. Mr Hallak realised the importance of educating our young people in an Islamic Environment. Al-Taqwa is also one of our largest colleges in Wyndham and this council is extremely proud of you all. many responsibilities and to prepare your students to gain greater knowledge.Wyndham is still one of the fastest growing cities in Australia and it is extremely important that council can assist with the employment of our young people. Without this partnership we cannot understand the many challenges our colleges and teachers have to consider on a daily basis.

To our students, I know you have had a wonderful education at Al-Taqwa, and I know and understand you have all had great opportunities and experiences that will take you forward in whatever pathway you choose in the future. You are our future and although sometimes life can be diffi cult, there are so many wonderful opportunities for each and every one of you. Finally, take every opportunity that is available to you and I and can be assured that many of you will be our leaders of tomorrow. Do not be

afraid to dream, but remember every new dream must become a reality and can open many more doors for you. We want you, our young talented people to have a vision and to work with us on this council. I know you have so much to off er this City and if we can work together our City will be rewarded and Wyndham will be a better place for all to live, work and play in. Good Luck to each and every one of you and all the best in your future endeavours.

I wish to announce my gratitude to every staff members who contributed so much time and eff orts in organising the Graduation Night. ASAWW,Al-Taqwa College provides education opportunities to students in a caring, safe and healthy learning environment, which promotes quality education, and Islamic values and beliefs. Students are nurtured to be lifelong learners and encouraged to be proud Australian Muslim citizens of tomorrow.

We aim to be a place where the individuality of each person is recognised, and where that recognition is refl ected in the College’s curriculum diversity and fl exibility, diverse teaching strategies and student centered processes. Th e College aims to create a school environment that instills in students love and obedience to Allah (swt) in accordance with the sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and enables them to benefi t from the teachings of the Holy Al-Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh).

In order to achieve the vision and mission, the College will fi nancially invest in capital works during the years to come. Every year we ensure that our facilities are updated and improved according to our Business and Strategic Plans.

It is essential that the College embarks on new capital development so as to meet the demands of anticipated enrolment growth, expansion of the curriculum provision and the refurbishment of existing facilities.

Th e College has identifi ed a building and refurbishment program for both campuses and intends to implement this program over the next few years. Th e capital development will include classrooms, a sporting complex, specialist teaching facilities such as laboratories and art spaces, resource areas (including library), staff working space, amenities and physical education facilities etc.

Th e year 2015 has been a busy and productive year for the Counselling and Welfare Department. Th e Department continued to expand with fi ve dedicated staff members, including Coordinator Lucy Verwey, as well as school counsellors, Ibrahim Abdel-Hafi z, Maha Saleh, Ruqaya Almirgani and Naazia Syed. As a team we provide counselling services to students, who may be experiencing a range of diffi culties and require a safe and confi dential setting to address these problems. Counselling focuses on personal responsibility, problem solving, as well as developing skills and strategies to deal with personal issues.

Th is has been an exciting year with the introduction of KidsMatter. Th is initiative is a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing and involves all students, staff members and families. Th is long-term project aims to promote a positive school community, implement social and emotional learning for students, foster collaboration with parents and help children with mental health diffi culties. KidsMatter has only just begun and will continue in 2016.

In 2015 the Department provided social-emotional programs for students which included the Year 7 Boy’s Revved Up Program, Year 7 Girls’ MPower Program, Year 8 Girls’ anxiety workshops and the Years 7-10 Cyber Safety Program. Th roughout the year the Department also held regular community sessions such as the Wednesday morning Halaqa for women, parent Cyber Safety Workshop and parent seminars which covered a range of topics including raising resilient children, raising teenagers, discipline and learning styles.

Th e Counsellors also participated in a number of activities this year including the years 9-12 girls’ camps, year 12 girls’ Ramadan iftar, and the year 7 bowling and laser tag excursion. As the school continues to grow, the Counselling and Welfare Department continues to provide support for students, staff and wider community. We look forward to another enriching and rewarding year at the College in 2016.

It has been a very busy and eventful 2015 in the nursing department. Th is year we said goodbye to nurses Nargis Khan and Joanne Buttigieg, we wish them all the best in their future endeavors. In their place we welcomed 2 new nurses: Lisa Stiglmayer as the Senior School Nurse and Christine Moala as a School Nurse.

As our College continues to grow, so do the health needs of our students. We have been working on reviewing and updating our school policies as well as creating new ones to refl ect the growing need of our students.

At the beginning of Term 3 we ran a ‘’Sneeze Safe’’ programme for the lower primary students. Th is educated them on the importance of good hygiene and covering their mouth when they sneezed or

coughed to prevent the spread of viruses during fl u season. We are looking forward to an exciting 2016. Currently we are working on some fabulous health promotional and educational programmes for all our students.

Th is year also sees a change in canteen management. We have been working in conjunction with the wonderful canteen staff to ensure we have a healthy, nutritious menu available to our students to choose from. Th is has seen the inclusion of more fresh produce. Finally we would like to thank all the parents and guardians for their ongoing support and we look forward to happy, healthy 2016.

Al-Taqwa College strived to continue to sustain a safe environment for students, staff and the community. Over the 2015 College year, we developed and advanced facilities across the College including new security gates and fencing, maintained grounds, buildings and structures, sustained the traffi c and car park safety program, trained personnel on emergency response, critical situation management, anaphylaxis and asthma emergency response. In addition, we continued to implement health and safety into all aspects of the College processes, systems and College life. We further educated our personnel and students on the importance of health, safety and well-being at front of mind and instilling a whole-school approach together as one community to care for and keep each other safe.

HUMAN RESOURCES Education is the College’s core business and so the importance of retaining and attracting Degree qualifi ed and experienced personnel to provide the best knowledge and support to our students is integral. Th e College appreciates its personnel and professional development opportunities are an important factor toward enhancing skills progressively, staying up to date on curriculum developments, pedagogy, professional learning and teaching and specialised educational programs and support. In 2015, the Human Resources Department was very active in partnering both Primary and Secondary as well as specialised programs and Departments, establishing an offi cial partnership with Victoria University, as well as providing professional support, designing program frameworks, recruiting and developing human capital, talent management and providing mentoring and guidance support from a qualifi ed business management perspective. In Term 1 we rolled-out the 1-to-1 Tablet Program for our Year 8 and 9s. We deployed 250 Dell Venue 11 Pro with the latest Intel Core M processor. So since the beginning of Term 1 all secondary students in years 8 to 10 have a tablet as well as their eBooks. Th is made learning materials easier to access as all their eBooks and notes were on one device.

We upgraded the school wireless network infrastructure that covered both primary and secondary schools. Th is was to support an additional 250 devices in Secondary and another 230 devices that consisted of, iPads in lower primary, and tablets in the upper primary areas.

We installed 90 access points with 802.11ac technology to cover all of the classrooms, staff rooms, library, multipurpose hall and in the primary and secondary school areas. We now have controller-less solutions which means we now have multiple redundancy in place to ensure no disruption on the wireless service in turn, no disruption in teaching and learning.

As part of on going maintenance, we refreshed 50 desktop computers in the secondary IT Labs. Now they all have the latest hardware and the newly released Microsoft Windows 10.

At the start of the year we also installed Interactive Whiteboards (IWB) and desktop computers in the new primary classrooms.

To provide a safe and convenient environment for students and staff with the existing CCTV around the campus we now have new gates and fencing with an automated system. Th e new system ensures only authorised personnel may access the school grounds and make it easy to lockdown in emergency situations. Th e last upgrade we planned towards the end of the year was to upgrade our Library system. After this upgrade teachers and students with school credentials could access Library digital resources such as eBooks and educational movies from anywhere 24/7. Gugus NugrohoICT MANAGER

LibraryTh is year was a busy and exciting one as the College continued to grow. How fast the year had gone meeting the reading, information and research needs of staff and students!

Lots of children took up the personal challenge to read as many books as they could by participating in the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge from March to September. To their delight they discovered that successfully reading a wide range of materials was not only rewarding and fun, but also helped them to become smarter and assisted in improving their writing skills.Good times were shared by talking about the diff erent types of books read in a variety of genres for varying ages and interests with friends, teachers, parents, brothers and sisters. We wish to congratulate everyone who participated in the challenge.

During 2015, it was the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s 70 Year Anniversary. Th e Children’s Book Week theme was celebrated in August on “Books Light Up Our World.”

Lower primary classes joined in the fun by having quiet reading sessions with the library lights turned off and children using a neon taper candle to read their new book. Th ey made themselves comfortable with blankets, pillows and soft toys. It was a joy to see their excitement, hear student laughter and conversations all about how beautiful the library looked and of course, talking about books and reading!

Upper primary classes were involved in the Book Week Book Hunt, using their bright candles and the clues provided to fi nd the mystery book hiding in its correct Dewey decimal place on the library shelf. Th ere were prizes for the most quiet class, the most well behaved group and the winners.

In September, the library hosted the Scholastic Book Fair for two weeks, with the theme being “Under the Sea – Explore an Ocean of Books”. In the wonderful pop up displays, there was something for everyone, with a huge selection of works by Australian and overseas authors and illustrators as well as stationery, novelty items and posters.

Children were inspired and able to safely see, touch and choose books according to their interests and reading levels, helping promote a lifelong love of reading for pleasure and learning. It was fantastic to see parents and teachers also helping foster a passion for literacy by being involved in the Book Fair with the students along the way. Every book purchased went towards earning free books for our school library.

Upon refl ection, the library staff enjoyed working in partnership with all teachers, students, staff , parents and the school community this year. We warmly thank you all for your support and look forward to the year ahead.

Th e responsibility of raising a child is a Communal eff ort. At Al-Taqwa College we are blessed to have that strong support team.

Th is year we welcomed four beautiful, energetic and vibrant new members into our Department. We had two amazing Speech Pathologists, Jenan Al Kantar and Genevieve Yip as well as enthusiastic support staff , Shumaila Kamran and Inun Siyadha. We also had Sartaj Hamza who has been an asset to the team over the years.

We worked very closely with the Principal, teachers, professional consultants, therapists and our most important advocates of all … parents, who are equal shareholders. Together we faced many challenges head on, but ultimately resulted in success of our students in order to equip them with a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Students with learning diffi culties are children fi rst. Th ey have every right to be treated in the same way as their peers. At Al-Taqwa, we cherish the idea of inclusion. Once a student is identifi ed, a special program is put into place, goals are set and the intervention is put in motion.

It is imperative that parents inform the school of any concerns so that early intervention may commence. With the correct intervention and

support, any student can succeed and become a successful adult.

Being a parent is the most beautiful and the most diffi cult job in the world, however the rewards are endless. Raising a child with a diffi culty can be challenging. During the year we had conducted a survey and these were some of the gems from parents, that we can all refl ect upon.

No two children are alike, each one has a preferred way of learning. Some are primarily auditory; others are visual, whilst some prefer to explore the world by means of touch. Teachers are increasingly challenged to provide for the diverse and complex needs of all students in the class. At Al-Taqwa, we are constantly keeping abreast of new developments of programs that may enhance the learning of our students. Parents play an important role in assisting the teachers with the education of their child.

A huge thank you to all who have contributed to the success of this Department and a shout out to my lovely team ... you are a special, incredible and awesome bunch! I could not have done it without you.

What a year 2015 has been! We are incredibly humbled to have worked with many delightful students, parents, teachers, Integration Aides, and our wonderful Special Needs Coordinator.

Ever wonder what happens in our sessions?

As Speech Pathologists at Al-Taqwa College, we worked with many students with varying needs. On a daily basis, we saw students with communication diffi culties aff ecting their:• articulation (the way speech sounds are made)• language (ability to understand and express

oneself ) • pragmatics (non-verbal behaviour; social skills)• fl uency (ability to speak without stuttering)• voice.

Th is year, we worked individually and in small groups (up to three students), often integrating play and fun activities into our therapy sessions. We were placing more focus on teaching literacy skills to lower primary students, in addition to developing their speech and language skills. As for secondary students, we worked more towards complex language skills, such as summarising key information, vocabulary expansion and essay writing.

We loved involving parents in therapy as it motivated the students and led to more signifi cant improvements in their development.

Here is what some of our students had to say about Speech Th erapy!

‘I love Speech Th erapy because I love reading and you can read stories and you can play games. And I can go on the computer. Speech Th erapy is fun and Miss Jenan is awesome.’Grade 2 student.

‘I love Speech Th erapy because I love games and I like grammar games. And we do Jenga and the best one is when we do the ‘oo’ sounds.’Miss Gen’s Grade 2 student.

We loved every bit of our days working alongside our lovely students and school staff . We are very much looking forward to 2016’s adventures. We wish all of our students the very best for their bright futures!

Grade 4-6ASSALAMU ALAIKUM

By the will of Allah (swt) and the eff orts of our students and teachers, 2015 was a memorable one fi lled with many experiences that our students will keep with them for a long time. Our students had the chance to engage in school activities, community programs, outdoor education events and curriculum based competitions.

Student success, ownership and personal development were at the forefront of our programs this year. Th roughout the year our students were successful in entering diff erent writing and spelling competitions; not only did Al-Taqwa receive a Certifi cate of Excellence from Write 4 Fun in recognition of our students’ outstanding writing, we also had a grade 4 runner up at the Wyndham Spelling Bee Competition. However it does not end there, selected students also impressed Cr Peter Gibbons (Wyndham City Councillor, Iramoo Ward) when they presented their solutions to the extinction of the EBB during the Love Your Locals day at Werribee Zoo.

In 2015, our Student Representative Council (SRCs) accepted an invitation by Th e Hon Telmo Languiller MP to visit Parliament House. Our SRCs joined forces with others in the district, in a forum run by Ms Joan Ryan MP. Our SRCs also took ownership of a campaign to ‘Keep Al-Taqwa Clean’ and worked relentlessly on all aspects of the program, which made it a great success.

Students from all year levels in upper primary, had a chance to Yoyo along during the NED Show, which aimed at instilling in our students, the values of doing their best and encouraging others as well as themselves, to never give up. Students also learnt how to be responsible spenders and super savers through their involvement in the Start Smart Commonwealth Program. Organised outdoor

physical activities also saw our grade 5 boys enjoy horse riding lessons at Lovely Banks, our grade 5 girls threw some shots as part of the Hot Shots Tennis Program, and our grade 6 students display their true sportsmanship as part of the school’s interschool sports program.

Our afternoon Literacy Support Program provided much needed assistance for selected students, while our after school Indonesian classes was a platform for students to be introduced to the Indonesian culture and language. Th is year, our weekly morning assembly programs, focused on Cyber Bullying Awareness and the dangers of posting pictures on social media platforms. During these assemblies, students had an opportunity to showcase their talents and present diff erent topics.

Th e year ended with a blast, as our grade 5 and 6 students embarked on their Team Building and Personal Growth Camp, at Th e Summit in Trafalgar. Our grade 4 students also ended the year on a high note with a grand Better Buddy event to celebrate a year of friendship with our Foundation students.

It was hard work that made 2015 a successful year, so well done to all the staff for their support and eff ort. On a fi nal note, I would like to wish all Al-Taqwa students a great and prosperous 2016 and in particular our grade 6 students as they embark on their high school years.

Th e Al-Taqwa College Accelerated Learning Plan (ALP) is designed to address the learning needs of gifted and talented students who are capable of working at a signifi cantly faster pace and in greater depth than their age-peers at primary and secondary school.

Th e ALP aims to provide the basis from which Al-Taqwa College can:• Nurture successful role models who achieve

personal and academic excellence.• Foster independent lifelong learners prepared

for the challenges of 21st Century living.• Evolve an Accelerated Learning Curriculum

that engages, challenges and inspires students; equipping our young people with the values, insights and skills to lead their own learning.

In 2015 a comprehensive assessment procedure was used to select 80 gifted and talented Grades 4 to 6 and Year 7 to 8 students to join the Program in the following year. Aptitude tests were used and information was sought from the applicants’ classroom teachers.

Students enter the program during grades 5 and 6 and Years 7 to 9. Th eir curriculum is accelerated across those key learning areas where higher cognitive skills allow rapid advancement. English and Mathematics are accelerated subjects. Most of the week’s class work will be undertaken in age peer (non-accelerated) studies which include Technology, Science, Humanities, Arts, Arabic, Religion, Quran and Sport. Acceleration is off ered through withdrawal from the classroom four lessons a week for each accelerated subject.

Academically, the ALP will give these students something more valuable than knowledge alone – it will give them an enthusiasm for learning.

Parents are invited to complete a Parent Nomination Form available from the Administration Department and returned it to the ALP Coordinator.

Arabic, Quran & Religionassalamu alaikum

It is a great pleasure to present to our school community the Arabic, religion and Quran department’s report for 2015. Once again, it has been a year rich in learning and teaching across all year levels in the primary.

Moving between countries, cultures and languages has become more usual because of increased travel and advanced ICTs. High quality education in languages enables students to respond positively to the opportunities and challenges of their rapidly changing world. Th is is one of the reasons Al-Taqwa College strives to equip our students with a second language so students become more accepting of diversity and more respectful of others and their cultures.

On the other hand, Arabic language is the language of the Quran and

WE AIM IN OUR CURRICULUM TO ENSURE

PRIMARY STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO READ

FROM THE QURAN BY THE END OF GRADE

SIX.

Furthermore, the school runs extra weekly Quran classes for the advanced Quran students who memorise Surah beyond the required syllabus of their year level. Most of the students who attend those classes on a regular basis will be qualifi ed to take part in the ‘Annual School Quran Competition’ which occurs every year during the month of Ramadan. Th e students compete in diff erent categories including Quran memorisation, Quran Tarteel, Khutba and Adhan.

Teachers attended professional development and workshops to enrich their knowledge on the most successful research and practices in guiding the activities to cater for diff erent levels and abilities in Quran reading and Arabic language.

We also integrated iPads in our Quran reading classes which assisted the students in working independently. It is in our strategic goal to integrate IT in all our Arabic and Religion subjects.

Th roughout Ramadan, the Arabic, Religion and Quran Department held a daily quiz question for students. Children across primary also created their own Ramadan bags and had a classroom sadaqa tin. In addition to the sadaqa tins, through the Soccer and Basketball Tournaments students managed to raise $1600. Th is money was delivered to the Royal Children’s Hospital by several of our Grade Five and Six students.

Another major event which took place this year through the Arabic, Religion and Quran Department was the visit from 110 students from Point Cook College to the Al Taqwa Masjid. Th e hour long session with these students was rewarding and positive for all involved. Along with SRC students, teachers showed the students through the masjid, followed by a short speech by Sheik Abdul Atheem. Th e Point Cook College students asked many questions and were keen to learn all about our religion.

Al Taqwa College celebrated Arabic and Religion week as we do every year. We focused this year on Arabic spelling and general Quran and Islamic studies quizzes and competitions. Other activities over the week included Art activities, Quranic story movies, lunch time activities and many other exciting activities.

Th e year has been rewarding and full. We look forward to another successful year in the Arabic, Religion and Quran Department in 2016.On closing, I sincerely thank my assistant Ms. Huda, our students, dedicated teachers and parents for their hard work this year.

Art

ASSALAMU ALAIKUM

2015 was a very successful year for the Primary Art Department. Across all year levels, students were involved in a variety of visual art tasks. Th e results and levels of creativity and enthusiasm were beyond expectations.

Our Annual Primary Art Week was a highlight for many teachers and students. Our main project for Art Week was to design a reading corner based on a theme. Classes put on their thinking caps and came up with the most amazing and visually impressive reading spaces we have ever seen in Al-Taqwa College. We had monkeys hanging in jungles, penguins and ice sculptures in Antarctica, circus tents, sea creatures, holidays and gardens just to name a few.

To coincide with classroom themes, students were also asked to dress up and make masks for a big school parade. It was an event thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Art is a popular subject at Al-Taqwa. It is a time for students to express themselves individually. It is time to learn and refi ne skills in drawing, painting, making and creating. It is time to show case fi nished pieces and refl ect on the process of achieving goals.

Al-Taqwa has provided students with the opportunities to experience art lesson in the mainstream classroom as well as through a specialised program which was off ered to Upper Primary students.

We look forward to further developments in the Art Department next year. I’m sure that there will be many colourful, creative and unique things coming our way In Shaa Allah.

END OF YEAR WORDS

What a wonderful year the Foundation students had! Th ere were eight classes of smiling, enthusiastic, energetic students all ready to learn amazing things. Over the year, we had many exciting adventures.

As part of our Art Week celebrations during Term 2, each grade chose a theme for their reading corner. We decorated our rooms to match our theme and we even had a dress up day. Our themes included the jungle, weather, transport, the circus, fairytales and the garden. Th ere were some very cool costumes and the reading corners looked awesome!

In May, we learnt to drive! Yes, the Foundation students each had a turn of driving around the sports court in little cars. Th e drivers had to make sure they stopped at the zebra crossing, so all the pedestrians could walk across the road safely.

During Term 3 we held Book Week. We all got to dress up as our favourite book characters. We had a parade in the Multipurpose Hall and we got to see all the bigger grades in their costumes too. It was lots of fun.

In August, we celebrated 100 days of school. We had a whole day of fun activities, celebrating with a special lunch in our mini hall.

We even had an author come to visit us during Literacy Week. Her name was Lee Fox and she told us about how she wrote her book ‘Ella Kazoo will not Brush her Hair’. Lee’s daughter does not like to get her hair brushed in the morning – what a great idea for a story!

Th e Foundation students and teachers had a fabulous year and we would like to say thank you to all of the mums and dads for their help throughout the year. We really appreciate it.

Grade 6Th e 2015 academic year was yet another challenging and motivating year. Al-Taqwa College aspires to deliver quality education to our students, through promoting a positive culture. It has been a wonderful and pleasant journey this academic year as it was fi lled with a diverse range of events and experiences.

Firstly, the students were a pleasure to work with. Th ey were stimulating, enthusiastic and challenging in their work and behaviour. With the fete, tournaments, tours and all events small or big - everything was worth remembering throughout the year. Our grade 6 students had great fun exploring diff erent types of genres in literacy and learning exciting new skills in numeracy.

Students were also involved in many exciting school activities and it has been very rewarding, especially when the children were able to celebrate each other’s achievements. Values like respect, responsibility, compassion and perseverance were strongly encouraged. Th rough activities like the Ramadan Class Decoration Competition and the interschool sports, students were allowed to unite and exhibit teamwork. It was apparent that grade 6 could work as ONE when full eff ort and heart and soul were put displayed.

Grade 6 consisted of great and talented individuals, who will succeed in their future endeavors, not only academically but also as good Muslims. We had great joy in watching the students grow with confi dence and prepare to face the challenges for their secondary schooling.

WE WISH THEM GOOD LUCK AND

GRAND SUCCESS IN ALL THEIR

ASSALAMU ALAIKUM DEAR

STUDENTS, PARENTS AND CARERS

I started working at Al-Taqwa College at the beginning of 2015 as Head of 7-9. It has been a great experience for me to be a part of Victoria’s largest Islamic College and still growing. In fact, it is Al-Taqwa College that comes to mind fi rst when you are asked about Islamic Schools in Victoria? Al-Taqwa College has a very important responsibility and mission as one of the leading Islamic schools in Australia. Islam, the word, is derived from Salema in Arabic which means peace and it is an expression of greeting and goodwill. Th erefore, our College is obliged to teach the students to spread salam (peace) amongst the people and show our community that Islam is religion of peace and love.

Our Prophet (pbuh) has said “A true muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims stay safe” and “Th e most perfect believer is the one with the best manners”.

Al-Taqwa College students are educated based on these values, namely, peace, love, respect and trustworthiness. Th ey are raised as honest and honourable citizens at our school. Th is is Al-Taqwa’s mission and I am very proud that I have taken a part in that mission this year. I have met wonderful students, staff and parents, it has been a privilege to work at Al-Taqwa.

Salam to all Al-Taqwa families and community.

2015 was most defi nitely an action packed year. We had elections for School Captains and also Class Captains. Our school Captains went to the Annual Anzac Day service and represented our College with pride and dignity. Th ey continued their leadership roles assisting in the young year levels of secondary where needed. Th e Class Captains and Vice Captains worked hard in leading their classes and maintaining the cleanliness of their classrooms.

Some year levels of the secondary boys went on camp in term 4. Th e Buchan Caves and cruising Lakes Entrance were key excursions during the camps. Watching dolphins race the boat, envying the lazy seals on the rocks, seeing hundreds of seabirds and picturesque natural scenery as well as seeing how beachside towns live a relaxed lifestyle were eye openers for the boys and even the staff . Swimming and playing along the beach, going on bush walks, playing various sports and doing a number of indoor activities also contributed to very busy, enjoyable yet tiring camps. Fundamental classes on Islamic values, maths and English were also a daily feature.

Hosting our Indonesian sister school is an annual event. Th is year again we hosted a group of students. Th ey spent two weeks with our students. Our students were fantastic ambassadors and companions for the visiting students.

Fundraising activities were a success this year. Ms Wafa headed up the fundraising campaigns with the Cancer Council with many boys getting involved. Our VCAL students and all the Class Captains led the charge to raise money for Syrian refugees.

Th e Secondary Department also ran a few workshops for diff erent year levels in conjunction with the Counselling Department. Workshops included MPower Girls for Year 7, Revved up for Year 7 boys, Anxiety workshops for Year 8 girls and Cyber-bullying for Year 7-10 students. We also had weekly inspirational talks by Brother Abu Hamza.

We began having morning assemblies for Year 7 and 8 boys in term 4, where students performed morning prayers together with exercises, following the Arab proverb: “A healthy mind is from a healthy body.” Th e boys quickly got into a good routine in this regard and settled into their morning classes well as a result.

One year 7 boy Mostafa Khudruj, organised a year 7 interclass soccer tournament. Well done Mostafa. Congratulations to all the boys for their great sportsmanship and participation.

Th is was but a glimpse into the buzzing about on campus this year for the boys. We will continue to improve and explore new ideas and embark on new journeys.

We hope you all have a safe and peaceful break and look forward to an exciting and rewarding 2016 insha’Allah.

Th e Student Welfare Department (SWD) was very busy this year. We ran many activities for our students. Our Secondary students went on camp this year to Camp Coorong. Th ey explored the Buchan Caves, went on a cruise at Lakes entrance, beach walks and indoor activities. Th e highlight of the camp was the fun park and laser tag, where both students and teachers enjoyed their time. Nothing beats sitting around a camp fi re, toasting marshmallows and telling scary stories. In addition to the fun activities, we had a lot of Islamic talks, discussions and competitions.

As every year, this year we hosted a group of students from our sister school in Indonesia. Th ey spent two weeks with our students, and went on a camping trip with their Year 8 mentors.

Fundraising activities were a success this year. We raised money for Syrian refugees as well as the Cancer Council Victoria. Students were competing amongst themselves to raise more funds.

Th e Secondary Department also ran a few workshops for diff erent year levels in conjunction with the Counselling Department. Workshops included MPower girls for Year 7s, Revved Up for Year 7 boys, anxiety workshops for Year 8 girls and cyber-bullying for the Year 7-10 students. Art & Media

Th e Arts is a visual approach to showing the creativity of one’s mind. Many students of Al-Taqwa Collage have displayed this creativity through aesthetical pieces of Artwork either using a digital or traditional mediums of Art. Students have the ability to create many diverse messages though one chromatic piece of work where confrontations of face to face verbal communication is not required.

Th is year has been an existing year for Th e Arts at Al-Taqwa College. Students were exposed to a new skill in which they can practice in their future endeavours—Digital Art. Digital Art was an opportunity for students to experiment with the wonders of Adobe Photoshop. From learning how to use basic skills and tools to understanding the complexity of Photo editing and creating the perfect image. Each year level was given a set assessment with a certain task, in which they had to generate a creative poster design tackling an everyday issue or theme. Year 8’s had cleanliness, Year 9’s had a country they would recommend others to travel to and year 10’s had body image or advertising for a sport star. By the end of the semester, the students had become so familiar with the program that they were teaching myself new skills. Well done guys!

In textile classes, students designed and produced textile products such as Aprons, pencils cases, library bags, key rings, tablets covers, pin cushions and tapestry bookmarks. Th ey unleashed their imagination using fabric paint, wool, string, cloth and created something unique and special. Student’s will also have the opportunity to study textiles as a VCE subject in 2016 at Al Taqwa, helping them understand some of the procedures of developing a concept and implementing it in the Textile Industry. Looking forward to see their resourcefulness unleashed in 2016

An event that took place in the Arts this year was the Art Exhibition Morning Tea. Nothing boosts personal creativity than seeing personal artwork exhibited. Th is was a great chance to encourage our pupils to advance even further in their creative studies and produce the best possible outcome for exhibiting. Th is year’s theme was to ‘Get Inspired’. Students had to fi nd something that inspired them, whether being nature, religion, culture to everyday individuals. Once they found this inspiration, they had to then choose their desired canvases.

A series of Artwork was then selected and displayed at Al Taqwa College and viewed by Special Guests Councillor Intaj Khan of Wyndham City Council, Anne Smith from ISV, Fawaz Chawk Editor in Chief of Al Wasat Newspaper and Fatma Saaoud of Crescent Wealth. Th ey were all both impressed and pleased with the eff orts our students took to complete these set artworks. Th is event was an overall success, with some very pleasing results.

Lastly, in November, an exhibition will take Place on the 27th to the 29th at Werribee Pacifi c Plaza showcasing this year’s artwork to the general public. Th is is a great opportunity for the students to have their work displayed not only at school, but to a broader audience. We look forward to seeing you all attend and support our students and school.

To the students, I just want to say well done guys, you should be all very proud of your eff orts this year.

MALALA YOUSAFZAI

Our aim at Al-Taqwa is to equip our students with skills that will contribute to the development of literate individuals capable of critical and creative thinking, aesthetic appreciation and creativity. Th rough the learning activities, we focus on the need to develop students’ ability to create and analyse texts and make a critical analysis. Th rough engagement with texts from the contemporary world and from the past, and using texts from Australia and from other cultures, students studying English become confi dent, articulate and critically aware communicators. Th ey further develop a sense of themselves, their world and their place within it. In addition, the oral presentation unit helps equip students with confi dence for participation in a democratic society and the global community.

English WeekTh is year’s English Week was a little diff erent. We joined forces with the Humanities and Maths Departments and conducted various activities. Th e students had an exciting time and enjoyed being pitted against other sections, to fi nd out who would emerge winners. For English we had the following activities.

Year 7- Quiz and Spelling BeeYear 8- Quiz and Spelling BeeYear 9- Debate Year 10 – Al-Taqwa Family Fued Year 11 and 12- Public Speaking

Debating and Public SpeakingTh e Debating and Public Speaking Programs at Al-Taqwa experienced a strong tradition of talent, achievement and commitment, providing a gateway to vast opportunities throughout school life and beyond it. Our students thrived in this area, expanding ideas and perceptions, developing confi dence, critical analysis, logic, competitive spirit, teamwork, leadership skills and surpassing

perceived benchmarks on all levels. Furthermore, debating and public speaking students consistently represent Al-Taqwa in inter-school competitions. Th is is enacted through various programs such as the Debaters’ Association of Victoria’s Schools Competition, Legacy Public Speaking Competition and the VCAA Plain English Speaking Competition. We encourage all students to get involved with debating and public speaking and would like to wish the best of luck to all students who are already involved with the group.

Th is year the following speaker’s were awarded Best Speaker in their various groups. Year 9, Mahasen; Year 10, Lina Ali and Muthaki; and Year 12, Adna Said and Siddiq Mohamad.

Congratulations to Adna and Siddiq for representing the school in the VCAA Plain English Speaking Competition.

School PlayTh e school play is an event that the students look forward to. Students are able to benefi t from being involved in curricular and co-curricular performance activities because of the resulting sense of achievement and to boost self-confi dence. Th e time-management, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills developed during drama-related activities are essential for an all round development.

Th is year the play ‘Mysterious Mind’ was written and directed by Year 11 students, Zeina El Houli and Emina Glamocic. I must applaud them for their fantastic job! Th e play focused on mental health and highlighted the issues and diffi culties that teenagers face on a daily basis due to peer pressure and misuse of social media. We also had a poignant rendition of slam poetry, composed and performed by Tasneem (Year 11) and a poem on the futility of following fashionable trends, written by Zeina and performed by Shahni Munaaf (Year 10). In addition a group of year 7-10 girls performed a rap on the repercussions of bullying.

P91

JournalTh e students under the leadership of Mrs Shimaa Halima, collated a journal of various pieces of writing by our students. It will be a good platform for the students to publish their work and hone their writing skills.

Accelerated Classes Accelerated Classes in English will commence from 2016. Th is will help high achieving students profi t from an enriched curriculum appropriate to the pace, depth and complexity of their learning. Th e curriculum will be planned so that it allows students to work to their potential at appropriate levels.

Food TechnologyTh e focus of the Food Technology Department throughout 2015 was life skills. Th is year we had approximately 170 secondary students from who had opportunities to explore their culinary interests and learn the basic skills of cooking and healthy eating.

Besides the students who walked through the Food Technology kitchen doors, scores of secondary staff members were provided the opportunity to build skills, share the spirit of camaraderie and learn from one another through the aft er school cooking class for the teachers every alternate week.

Each individual who participated in Food Technology, walked out a richer person in knowledge and skills for life.

Junior Food TechnologyTh e emphasis of Food Technology in Year 7 and 8 was health, nutrition, food groups and the food models in order to develop a basic understanding of the ingredients that students work with in their day-to-day lives and encourage them to make the right food choices.

Considering our ever expanding multicultural community, the Year 9 and 10 curriculum highlighted cultural and social infl uences on food choices. In preparing our students for global citizenship the Department also took the opportunity to introduce the students to the concepts of food production, food marketing, sustainable practices in the food industry and impacts of production and packaging on the environment. Students were encouraged to make a resolution to adopt at least one of the four ‘Rs’ of waste in order to make a positive contribution to the environment.

Senior Food TechnologyAs always, the year began with excitement for the VCE Food Technology students who were excited to begin on their school assessed task: Th e Food Technology Portfolio.

Th e students worked hard throughout the year, not only on the theory component, but were keen and worked relentlessly on their school assessed tasks preparing, presenting and completing the task to high standards.

Th e Top Designs 2015 Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum was an eye opener to the students. It set the standards for the work they were to do and also

brought the realisation that the journey they were about to undertake was a journey of ups, downs, tears, sleepless nights but eventually one of the most satisfying and rewarding experiences of their lives.

During the months of August and September, the Food Technology practical room was a buzzing bee hive with teachers ensuring that all was ready for the students’ tasks and the students in turn working both at home and at school to produce creative and high quality work. Th e students demonstrated very high levels of skill and were creative in the preparation and presentation of their food products, show casing a variety of skills and techniques they had acquired over the years. Th e fi nal folio was a culmination of hard work, dedication, creativity and over all organisation which are all important life skills that our students will take away with them. Th e year for these students and the teacher was a very gratifying year.

Staff activitiesTh e Food Technology Department also opened doors to staff members by providing opportunities for aft er school cooking classes where teachers swapped roles and turned into students for the duration of the class. Various staff members volunteered to share skills with their colleagues, and it was a great time of learning and fun at the same time, introducing our taste buds to foods from varied cultures. Staff members, like good students, took these skills home and experimented with them bringing back reviews from family and friends.

For the fi rst time in 2015, a staff cooking competition was held where they planned their menu on the basis of the design brief provided to them. It was a great opportunity to see the competitive edge in the participating staff members and the competition fever spread to the other staff members who cheered their colleagues on till they completed their fi nal products. As the year closed the journey did not end, the Food Technology Department had already begun planning and preparing for the 2016 academic year. We are looking forward to leaping into the coming year with a renewed spirit of enthusiasm, dedication and learning.

Health & Physical EducationEach year the Health & PE Department at Al-Taqwa College extensively promotes students’ participation in sports within and outside the curriculum. In 2015 our students did exceptionally well in our interschool sports.

In March, the year 7 boys won the Wyndham Inter School Tennis Tournament without dropping a set. Th ey knocked out two schools, Werribee Secondary College and Wyndham Central, to advance to the next round at the Western Metropolitan Regionals. We were proud of the boys who played with big hearts despite some of them being small in size.

A special mention to Yaser Ali Bakhit of 12D, his brother Khaled and the two other year 10 boys Mahmoud El-Houli and Ali El-Houli who achieved third in the tennis tournament despite fi elding three year 10 students in the year 11-12 competition. Th ese boys also assisted in coaching our younger year 7 boys. Our year 7 girls came second in the tennis tournament.

Th e year 8 and 9 boys did exceptionally well by winning the Inter Islamic Schools Futsal Competition in April. Th ey played eight games in a row and defeated all the teams. Yasin Nur our talismanic captain had a great combination with Elyas Nur in attack. Th eir mesmerising dribbling skills outwitted most of the opponents’ defense. Hamzah Mohamed was technically gift ed in the defense. His strength and close control was the backbone of our attacks. Th e school cannot be more proud of the boys for their excellent achievement and their resounding victory.

Th e year 7 boys were superlative in the Wyndham Division, Year 7 Soccer Tournament. Th ey completely dominated the whole tournament by scoring a total of 34 goals and conceded only one goal which was the only defensive error that we made. In one of the matches, Moonib, who was the tournament top scorer with 12 goals, ran and dribbled the whole fi eld and scored a fi ne solo goal. His fast pace and trickery was no match for the opposition. In our midfi eld, we had

two towers of strength in the form of Abdulrahman Saney who scored eight goals and Bader Ismail who scored nine goals.

Th is was the fi rst year that the Al-Taqwa College girls participated in the Wyndham Division Cross Country Competition in May. Several girls completed in the top 10 and went on to the Western Metropolitan Regional round. Overall it was an eye opening experience as well as a fun and exciting one too. Seeing as this was the fi rst time the girls participated in such an event, they all had great courage and tried their best whilst taking pride in whatever they achieved in the end. Th e girls gave it their all and ran the best they could.

Our boys also did us proud in the same Wyndham Division Cross Country. A total of 14 secondary boys qualifi ed for the next round. Th is was a new record for our school. A new cross country star was born in the form of a diminutive and shy boy, Moonib Adus, who came fi rst in his 12-year old category. Mohamed Fofana came in second in the same category. In the 15-year old category, Hamza Mohamed came in second while Ali Ashkir came third in the 16-year old category and Mohamed Saeed also came in third in the 17-year old category.

In the Western Metropolitan Regional Cross Country, our 15-year old category boys comprising of Yasin Nur, Hamza Mohamed, Sahal Hared, Ahmed Adus and Ibrahim Khudruj came in third in the team category. Th e star of the show was Yasin Nur, the defending champion in his age category. He ran the perfect race and was leading the pack from start to fi nish. Yasin came fi rst with the time of 10 minutes and 32.57 seconds.

Th ere was a variety of sporting events that took place this year for our secondary girls and many took part in them. Th e girls participated in the Wyndham Inter School volleyball, basketball, netball and cricket competitions. Th e girls also took part in the

P95

Wyndham Division Athletics Meet for Years 7 to 10 during August. In the same athletics meet, our year 9 boys took the fi rst, second and third placings in the 1500m race. Our school may be the fi rst school to have the top three placings in the same event. Hamza came in fi rst, Yasin second while Radwan came third.

Irfaan from year 7 took second place in the 1500m for the 13-year age group. He was leading the rest of the pack for most of the race but his opponent caught up with him in the fi nal 30m. Yasin came second in the 800m race while Yahya and Asim came third in high jump and discus respectively. Ibrahim came third in the 400m race. In the Western Metropolitan Regional Athletics Meet, Bader Ismail came fi rst in the shot put aft er winning the same event in the Wyndham Division. Bader represented the school in the state fi nal where he came fi ft h.

Our secondary girls did exceptionally well in all the inter school sports that they participated, with scores ranking in the top three for most. Th ese events not only encouraged interaction between our own female students but between female students from other schools as well. Th is helped to create an atmosphere in which the girls enjoyed themselves whilst staying healthy and fi t.

Mahnoor Sohail, our very own golfi ng legend represented the State of Victoria on 9 August in Canberra, in the under 17 National Championships. She was part of a team of 12, who played a diff erent state each day. Mahnoor won three out of fi ve of her individual match play rounds, which in turn helped the Victorian team come out with second place. Th e school is very proud of her and she has truly put Al-Taqwa College on the map, winning both gold and silver medals in the Under 17 National Golfi ng Championships.

In August, Mr Mohammad, Mr Akyavas and Mr Stefanos Chrisoulis conducted their fi rst archery sessions with the year 7 and 8 male students. Th e session was well organised with the teachers clearly setting the rules for their students to follow before any

arrow was fi red. Considering none of the students had shot a bow before and were extremely excited, they were all well behaved and followed all the instructions given by the teachers. Aft er a bit of practice, some students even managed to hit the bull’s eye. Th e activity concluded with the students trying to hit balloons on the targets. Overall, the students enjoyed themselves. As the weather gets warmer there will be very attractive sporting lessons that students will want to look forward to. Next year, the female teachers will conduct archery sessions for our secondary girls.

In September, our school made history by being the fi rst school to win all the three trophies for the Bachar Houli Cup Finals. Aft er leading by 30 points during half-time, our 7/8 boys let AIA catch up during the 7/8 grand fi nal. With two minutes to go, AIA fi nally was in the lead, our hearts were in our throats by then. How could we squander a 30-point lead? AIA thought they had the trophy within their grasp, but true to Al-Taqwa grand fi nal style, the script was not fi nished yet. In the fi nal kick off , Vice-Captain Bader, who was also man of the match, caught the ball and kicked it to Hamza who did the perfect mark. Cool as a cucumber, Hamza kicked the winning goal with four seconds to go amidst the rapturous roar of the crowd. Our Al-Taqwa supporters jumped for joy, the fi nal score was Al-Taqwa 69, AIA 67.

Th e year 9/10 grand fi nal was more of a one-sided aff air. Aft er a slow start, we easily beat Ilim College with a 75 point margin. Th e fi nal score was Al-Taqwa 93 and Ilim College 18. Th e man of the match was Yasin. Th us with the grace of Allah (swt) we completed the treble with the year 11/12 boys winning their trophy in their previous match. Alhamdulillah!

Th is year was jam-packed with activities for our secondary students and all who participated were excited and fi lled with joy, hopefully we have a just as exciting year next year, if not more!

Humanities

Th e Humanities Department persevered to accelerate on learning and teaching strategies in order to preserve and develop documentation relevant to the Australian Curriculum. Th e year was fascinating yet demanding for the Department in relevance to updating the curriculum. Now the time has come when we have to go back and refl ect on our achievements and the enormous experience which we gained individually and working as a team. Th e Department is fully committed to implementing new strategies as and when required to continue further improvement.

School excursions were an important and eff ective means of motivating students and engaging them in active learning experiences. Al-Taqwa College provided opportunities for total immersion in the natural environment and social settings. On such excursions, the students practiced their social skills and critical thinking abilities outside of the controlled class setting. Th is year the students of years 9 and 10, visited the Melbourne Museum to view the WWI Centenary Exhibition during August. Th is was part of the praxis inquiry fi eld trip. Th e students witnessed a London based WW1 Exhibition that was touring in Australia at the time. Th e Exhibition showcased new and rare artefacts of WW1. Th e students were expected to put learning into practice within their praxis inquiry subject. Th e Year 11 Legal Studies class went on an excursion to the County Court in April. Th e precinct’s educational programs astonished the students and at the end of the day they had a greater understanding of order the processes of law-making,

dispute resolution and the administration of Justice in Australia. Th ey left with an understanding of the impact of the legal system on the lives of every citizen. Later in the year, VCE Business students visited the Yakult Factory, which provided learners with a contemporary educational experience.

HUMS Week was arranged, collaborated and promoted as a valuable school event in the month of September. Th is time we focused on the activities as a whole school approach where three core Departments (Humanities, English and Maths) celebrated the week together for the fi rst time in the school’s history. Th e students were actively engaged in a number of diff erent activities, games and quizzes where they showed their great enthusiasm and eff ort to participate and win competitions.

Our fervent and indubitable team compiled of the academic assets of Terry Manoussakis, Terry Rubesaame, Ezio Paciocco, Yasein Yassin, Mohamed Yusuf, Shanthi Balakumar, Faiekha Schroeder, Serene George, Lorraine Paul, Greta Aranha, Farnaaz Ali, Fatima Shah, Visha Lingam, Gita Raj, Sarah Ali and myself.

I do wish to acknowledge and extend my sincere thanks to the team for their persistence throughout the year to pursue their goals. A signifi cant contribution!!!!!

Information & Communication TechnologyInformation and Communication Technology is an ever-growing subject, which prepares students to be creative and visualise data and information to make decisions. It uses a variety of tools and resources to communicate, create, broadcast, store and manage information.

Even though ICT is an elective subject for Year 7-9, students learnt to design and develop websites, create relational databases and develop the skills to sort and fi lter information. Th ey also learnt about using desktop publishing to prepare pamphlets, spreadsheet functions and formulas to improve their calculation skills and present the information visually in all diff erent ways. Students are not only able to create mail merge letters and labels but also the use of latest Web 2 tools, which were very useful to improve the learning process for other subjects too.

Similarly, the VCE Information Technology Applications Program was off ered where students enjoyed diff erent types of programs especially programming with visual basic. Each application was written and tested, as well as running the program to see if it worked otherwise debugging took place.

VCE students were also supported during lunch time as well as in aft er school classes to enhance their learning.

ICT Week was organised this year from 26 to 30

October where all students were encouraged to participate. Students were involved in the Google Scavenger Hunt, Create a Poster, Video, Website or PowerPoint Presentation about one of the following topics:

Islamic ValuesISLAMIC VALUES

Th e Islamic studies teachers worked very hard with the students to elaborate their Islamic identity and values. Th is happened through the interactive approach and involvement of students in applying the learning of Islamic ethos on their daily school life. A mentoring program has evolved during the course of 2015. A group of senior high school devoted students were invited from the beginning of the year to work with the troubled junior high school students and off er them help and advice. Under the guidance of the Islamic studies teachers, the group took part in the pastoral care presentations to address issues of concern and high school students were actively involved in presenting Islamic contemporary topics to their year cohorts. Th is interaction between senior and junior high school students was from the start founded on the ‘brotherhood and sisterhood’ concept in Islam where senior students yield themselves available during recess and lunch to walk around the school and reach students in need of help. Th e group has also assisted in resolving confl icts on Islamic basis. Weekly, the group would also meet with year 7 students to empower their Islamic identity.

On another note, Quran classes and halaqa were organised during recess and lunch times for those students who felt the need to attend. Tajweed classes started in term 3, 2015 for Muslim teachers to help them in their professional learning in this area.

Students also had a range of extra curricula activities to expose them to other aspects of Islam. In semester one, a group of our talented students had the opportunity to take part in the school Quran competition and other activities during Ramadan and after.

Our Arabic and text & tradition students paid a visit to the Islamic Museum of Melbourne where they were able to view the contributions of the Islamic civilization in various aspects of life.

A selected group of 12 female students had the chance to articulate controversial issues from an Islamic perspective during a Q & A event with the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce at Victoria University on Th ursday 10 September 2015

ARABIC Th e year 2015 was a transitioning year in terms of programs and textbooks. Th e Australian Curriculum for LOTE was gradually introduced and students were able to acquire Arabic through the four macro-skills of language; reading, writing, speaking and listening. For this purpose, a new resource was on trial and students were enjoying it.

Next year, the new Arabic textbook “Taalam Al-Arabia” will be fully introduced and teachers hope that with this multi-skills series, students’ acquisition of Arabic will be more facilitated.

Finally, a group of four Arabic native speakers from high school students were selected to take part in a debate competition organized by Qatar Debate in April 2016. Th ey will go through some training in 2015 before they travel to Qatar in 2016 for an international competition with overseas students to debate in Arabic.

Olive BranchTh e Olive Branch Campus continued to open its door as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivering the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Program Certifi cate II in Horticulture, which is being continually improved and updated. Our RTO compliance against the AQTF standards was constantly updated to keep up with the new changes throughout year. Staff qualifi cations as trainers and assessors are also regularly updated through training and workshops to keep abreast with the changes in the industry.

In addition to the Certifi cate II in Horticulture Course, the Olive Branch Campus also continued to provide its facilities for the Year 7 to 10 students who took up Environmental Science (Horticulture) and Woodwork as their elective subjects. Students undergoing Horticulture electives, were exposed to the introductory overview of the Certifi cate II in the Horticulture Program which was off ered as a VCE/VET subject to Year 10 to 12 students. Th e Woodwork elective on the other hand, provided the students with workshop facilities for them to design and build various models and projects, which allowed them to acquire the hands-on experience with tools and equipment within the fi eld.

In March this year, the Olive Branch Campus hosted a visit from the Pahang Education

Department, Malaysia. A presentation was held following the delegates going on a short tour around the campus ending with a sumptuous lunch.

As in former years, the Olive Branch Campus was actively involved in Fete Day where we sold most of our stock of plants and all of our vegetables, which were freshly grown and harvested prior to the event. Our vegetables such as hydroponic lettuces and strawberries, silverbeet, leeks, spring onions and chilli plants were indeed very popular amongst the community. Ornamental plants like Bottlebrushes, Aeonium sp. (succulents), Dietes and Flax plants, vegetatively propagated in the nursery, were also put up for sale. In addition, students’ work of seedlings and plant cuttings were also sold.

As an RTO, the Olive Branch Campus has a solid foundation for growth and development. With teamwork and support from all, we aspire to further expand the Campus into new areas and to develop it as one of the best institutions in the educational milieu within the region.

Science

2015 proved to be an interesting and productive year for the Science Department at Al-Taqwa College. Th e schools’ theme for National Science Week 2015 was Making waves – the science of light, based on the International Year of Light. Students strengthened their understanding that Light is everywhere and is fundamental to our existence.

A number of interesting and challenging activities were conducted for students during Science Week. Activities were created to develop an understanding and appreciation of the role that light plays in our daily lives. Activities involved hands on demonstrations, research tasks, practicals, quiz competitions, poster and model making that enabled students to understand that we can enjoy a rainbow, scan our purchases at a supermarket, take photos and X-rays, look at things through microscopes and telescopes, all because of light. All activities linked to the curriculum and achievement standards and were conducted as either classroom or lunchtime activities.

Students were also exposed to various excursions and incursions throughout the year to strengthen their Science skills. Th ere was a VCE Biology excursion to Barwon Heads on Sampling Methods in Ecosystems, a VCE Chemistry excursions on water chemistry to Ecolinc and Latrobe University, as well as a VCE Physics excursion on Motion to Luna Park, just to

name a few.Th e afterschool VCE classes was a continued highlight of the year with VCE students undertaking Unit 3 and 4 study with additional help to excel in their studies. Th ese extra support classes were provided for Chemistry, Biology and Psychology.

Our dynamic Science team this year consisted of some fresh graduate teachers working in close collaboration with some of our highly experienced teachers. Together we continued to support each other and worked towards improving our Science teaching and learning goals, which were continuously monitored through student progress and achievement. A number of new resources were ordered this year to enhance the Science curriculum. Resources included books, DVD’s, trial exams, SAC’s, interactive science games and laboratory materials.

I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to my wonderful Science team for their continuous eff orts towards improving the Science Teaching and Learning Program within the Secondary School.

Textiles & DesignASSALAMU ALAIKOM

Th e study of textiles provided students with a broad knowledge of the properties, performance and uses of textiles in which fabrics, colouration, yarns and fi bres were explored. Th e focus areas of apparel, furnishing, costume, textile arts and non-apparel were recognised fi elds of textiles that will direct choices of student projects. From these choices, students produced pencil cases, pin cushions, library bags, tapestry and aprons.

Currently, the subject is off ered to students in Years 7 to 10, with the progress of heading into VCE product design and technology in the near future.

Th e textile room provided a creative workspace for students to experiment and explore practically, using a wide range of materials and tools. Specialist equipment available were the sewing machines. Students learnt the basic techniques in using sewing machines and understood the parts of a sewing machine and its usage. Th ey learnt how to sew lines, make stitches and patterns using diff erent techniques.

Students also participated in the following activities.• ISV Exhibition with student textile products

displayed at the gallery. • Excursions to the National Wool Museum and

Victorian Certifi cate of Applied LearningVCAL IN THE MAKING!

What a year it was. Before this year not many students knew what VCAL was let alone had heard of it. Th e fact that VCAL is now off ered to almost 500 schools in Victoria and still growing, shows the popularity of the program. In 2014 our school was lucky enough to endorse the program and it has been great so far. VCAL provides students with an alternative pathway to fi nishing Year 12 and into further study. Th e school formed partnerships with several TAFEs including VU and Kangan.

On behalf of the VCAL class and also Al-Taqwa, we would like to thank the hard working dedicated VCAL teachers, Visha Lingam, Nisrine Barakat, Blagica Nikolovska, Marwa Houli and Sukbir Kaur for making the program so worth wild for the students, thank you.

P130

Th is year has been an interesting and busy one! Th ere is some information for secondary students to gain before pursuing future decisions. I encourage every student to begin pondering about subjects you enjoy, and from that point the subjects would lead to courses you would like to pursue. It is important, that every individual reads resources like job guide, VTAC, University guides and brochures, career newsletters to gain knowledge to help gain a range of ideas and choices for securing a position for your future. Whatever your choice after school - further study, employment or a gap year - make sure it is well considered.

Work Experience Program 2015Th e Work Experience Program was aimed for students to further explore the type of career path they would like to take beyond secondary education. Each student was equipped to investigate their interests and what careers they would like to pursue. Students were able to do this by using a number of resources such as the Job Guide, career pathways booklet, internet and many book resources available from the Careers Department. Th is year the Work Experience Program was a big success. About 80% of the Year 10 students were able to successfully fi nd work experience placements during the term 2 holidays. Placements were undertaken in areas of law, accounting, fi nance, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, architecture, graphic design and engineering.

I am very proud and pleased with this year’s student performances whilst on work experience. All employees were very pleased and had nothing but praise for our students. I am proud of everyone who completed work experience this year. I am sure it will be something you will remember for years to come.

Each student was expected to fi nd a work placement for themselves and arrange their placement during a set period of time. Th is year, the work experience program was conducted during the term 2 holiday break. As part of government legislation students were also expected to undertake an Occupational Health & Safety course in order to

partake in the Program. Th is is usually conducted after all work experience arrangement forms are collected.Students are given employer packs and a work experience diary. Follow ups are undertaken on the students during their work experience by calling and speaking to their supervisors. Students were also given a certifi cate of completion.

Rarely does Al-Taqwa Secondary School see as much activity as it did in week three of term 4. Monday saw Year 12 students attending their fi nal classes, which prompted the annual re-working of the school uniform into weird and wonderful sartorial interpretations. Th ese were then signed by students and staff , and most likely these artefacts will be taken out at various times throughout our students’ lives as they remember the joys of fi nishing school. Th e same day saw the administrative and teaching staff put on a wonderful lunch to celebrate the fi nal Year 12 day and fi nal assembly. Students were complementary of the delicious cheesecakes and wide range of condiments, and all did well to combine the traditional planting of the olive tree with Mr Hallak.

We had 79 Al-Taqwians accompanied by Mr Hallak and teaching staff proceeding to the front of the Administration Building to plant the olive tree. I would like to thank all staff involved in the preparation of this great event. Without you this would not have been possible. Afterwards, words of encouragement and motivation were given by Mr Hallak and our school Imam.

Th e VCE graduation night was a great success with our graduating students and over 300 parents,

siblings, friends and Al-Taqwa staff celebrating at the Grand Star Reception Centre. Th e function was held on Wednesday 25 November with MC, Mr Terry Manoussakis.

Th e program included inspirational and motivational speeches from the Principal, VCE Coordinator, honourable guests and our year 12 School Captains. Th ese speeches kept us all entertained, which reminded us of why we will miss the Class of 2015 so much. Th e fi nal Year 12 video was a highly amusing variety of short fi lms, animation and farewells. Our Year 12 students appeared on stage and were awarded their Graduation Certifi cates and gifts. An immense amount of work went into all aspects of the evening.

On behalf of Al-Taqwa College we would like to thank all VCE teachers, staff and students who worked tirelessly throughout the year. We would like to congratulate the class of 2015 and wish you all the best for your future and may Allah (swt) protect and guide you all in the right path, Inshallah.

PRIMARY

As the earliest learning level at Al-Taqwa College Indonesia, the primary department refl ects our dedication to each child and his/her individuality to grow as an individual with best characters. Children take English lesson as soon as they stepped into school.

Our primary is a safe and fun place to learn and grow. Here, they develop a sense of belonging and sharing. Th ey are nurtured in an environment full of warmth, excitement, challenges and respect.  For teachers, it is a place where energies fl ow into creating meaningful learning opportunities for each student, and into enjoying a high degree of personal satisfaction by working with them. For parents, it is a place where their children are safe and secure, a place where communication is valued and guaranteed, and where they see themselves and are viewed by the school as an important and valued partner in the success of their children’s education.

Th e primary students and teachers had lots of fun and challenging activities this year. Th e excursions and incursions were exciting times for students. We had lots of opportunities to explore and had learned many things about the history of technology of communication in our trip to the Science and Technology museum, an adventure to Th e Deep Blue Sea (3D fi lm) at IMAX theater, a wonderful invitation from LIPI lab which brought us hands-on learning on agriculture and farming. Th e incursion with Kak Mal, a story teller, was very exciting for the students as he had not only told great stories, but taught the children how to produce diff erent voices for diff erent characters. We also had a fun-swimming activity and Primary Leadership Camp, and not to forget, that we also celebrated Indonesia Independence Day by doing some fun games that encouraged them to work both individually and as a team.

Th is year the students were not only active in internal competitions but also joined in regional competitions: First place winner in the Young

Enterpreneurship Competition at Ummah Market day 2015, enter into the fi nal round of EF Spelling Bee Competition 2015, Speed Building for Grade 1 & 2, Creative Building for Hrade 3-6, and Robotic Programming Grade 3&4.

Alhamdulillah it has been a busy year, but we can say, ‘We rock and We are awesome’.

SECONDARY

Secondary years have always been challenging and with full of excitement. Th e secondary department refl ects the process of on-going development of maturity, creativity and intellectual components for the students. As for teachers, staff and parents, we are continuously engaged in a positive and open communication as we are not only partners in developing the school as a whole, but also most crucial elements that are important in achieving the education success at Al Taqwa College, Indonesia.

It is believed that academic success is a combination of the strong knowledge foundation and the experiences in line with it. Th erefore, students were exposed to variety of programs, both internal and external, to equip them with suffi cient life skills to prepare them for their career path. Students are grouped into ‘houses’ which becomes the medium to instil the characteristics of leadership, unity, tolerance and organisational skills. Students continue to work together on ‘house based’ in most of our programs such as: the Leadership camp, Literacy day which promotes reading interest, visit to NET television station and Chevron Geothermal Energy which expose them to diff erent career pathways,University Info Day and Teenage Edu which motivates them.

Students’ enthusiasm in the learning is refl ected from the outcome of their in-class studies with their out-of-class activity options. Al Taqwa College Competition (ACTION 2015), our annual inter-school competition, was successfully held engaging over 30 schools, not only locally but also Malaysian schools. We hope to expand this success in our

Sentul - Indonesia

P141

ACTION 2016 in March. We have the SRC running as the student’s representative, TAC which is a hobby club on nature and astronomy, archery and futsal. Two teams from secondary 2 represented the school in the Strategic Educational Alliance (SEA) 2 conference of South-East Asia last August in Malaysia; it was a vast learning experience and networking for the school. As for the Al Taqwa Union Debate (AUD) we have successfully came in as the 1st and 2nd winner in a regional competition. Shafa Qalbi K. of Year 9 won 2nd place in the regio nal Spelling Bee competition, representing Bogor to the national level, insyaAllah.

For an international education institution, we are proud of being one of the elected school by the Centre of Language Development Strategy and Diplomacy, under the Ministry of Education, and be part of their team in developing Bahasa Indonesia Literacy Program for International Schools. May Allah SWT guide and give us ease with this program in sharing and benefi ting others.

Overall, it has been a productive year and hope to come up with more achievements and excitement ahead in producing ‘Agent of Change and Transformation’ among our students and graduates.
