Q) Should I buy ‘Prelims Simplified’ now when Prelims is on 4th October, 2020?
Ans - Many a times, toppers advise not to read any new book near the examination. Do try to understand the
rationale behind the advice. The suggestion is to complete one source, and revise the same source before
jumping on any other source for the same concepts. E.g. if you have done Laxmikant book for Polity, do not jump
to D D Basu just before the exam. It is true for concepts book, not for practice book.
Do not assume Prelims Simplified as a concept book. Understand it as a bundle of Previous year
questions (PYQs) with following number of topic wise questions, answers, explanations and structured
thinking. This is the apt time to practice following UPSC PYQs (of last 9 years), if not done earlier.
155 each in History and Environment 103 in Economy
146 each in Geography and Current affairs 78 in Science
117 in Polity
Below is the detailed description of different situations and how this book can help in those situations.
Situations How this book can help you for 4 October Exam
You could not practice UPSC
PYQs till now and it is just
30 days left to the exam.
This book gives 900 UPSC PYQs from 2011-19 in 200 themes (on an average each
4.5 questions per theme). The moment you revise/cover a particular theme, you
cover the PYQ of that theme and the topic is complemented and supplemented
with PYQ knowledge and explanations.
In this way, you will easily cover all 900 PYQ (of last 9 UPSC Prelims) in the
most effective way. PYQs practice is a must for Prelims as they are the ONLY
authentic source to develop thought process into the direction of UPSC.
With similar knowledge
base, your friend is able to
score 120+ marks, but you
are not. You are unable to
find reasons for the same.
I have tried to write structure thinking and intelligent guessing in 250+ question
explanations. Practicing those questions may help you to develop that extra
needed to go beyond usual cut off range.
If you are done knowledge part and want to improve smart skills part,
Prelims Simplified is for you.
You are unable to
understand which topics to
prioritise in revision?
The book (Annexure V) consists of consolidated list of 200 themes along with
number of questions asked from the same. This list can work as a checklist
whether you covered the same. You can also gauge the relative importance of
the theme by number of questions asked from it. It will help you in taking a
better call in prioritising.
You are feeling under
confident in a particular
subject/head and unable to
figure out what should be
the way to cover the same?
Ideally, we should cover up a source for each head and then refer this book. But,
there may be a case that you could not do the same and do not have even time
for that. (This happened with me in Science subject for Prelims 2017).
You can at least solve PYQs from that head, refer explanations, and discuss the
further suggested reading topics with your friends/search on internet/read first
paragraph of Wikipedia. It will lead to maximum gain in minimum time and the
subject can be covered up to some extent.
You could not cover/make
notes for National parks,
Ramsar sites, constitutional
bodies and do not have time
to cover them in detail?
This book consists of 30+ smart charts/maps etc for revision which could really
reduce your effort in finding the correct source and covering the themes. E.g.
the ones mentioned in question, major acts in British India etc.
