Wednesday meeting – 13th July 2016PRAISE GOD AND BE ALWAYS JOYFUL ‐ The First Key

Last weekend we did the four step retreat at the Mabole church. It was special because Mabole is celebrating 200 years ‐ it is one of the oldest churches. They are rebuilding the entire church. So the first meeting to be held in the Mabole church was our four step retreat. The same thing happened in the Rajagiriya church ‐ when the church was being rebuilt the first sessions that were had were by us, the CRL.

In Mabole our members went from house to house and invited the entire village and we are so happy that most of the village came for the four step retreat. The priest commented at the end and said, "I don't know how you all do it, but these people sat right throughout the two days." That is because of the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Many of you who are in the older generation know Sister Leonora who was like one of our founder members of the covenant community. We just got the news that she has gone to the Lord. One by one the CRL is forming over there; the founder members are all going there ‐ I only hope that they're not fighting but united and praying for our mission. She lived with the Lord and ailed with the Lord. Every week she came for the meeting here and when she couldn't come here she came for the Mabole meeting. She held the Lord in her heart and died in the Lord. We don't have to be sad because she lived a full life for the Lord. We can simply thank God for her life in a special way. 

Her husband died when she was young and she became a very rich woman because of her inheritance. But she didn't use that money for herself but built a massive building for the poor of that area who lived in the slums, opened a school, trained the poor who couldn't go to school and generally did something that few people would do. That alone would have taken her to heaven; but added to that she had a very colourful personality and she was truly one of the pioneers of our movement and she was used mightily by God.

Tonight I'm continuing the theme of the five keys. Why is that? Everyone is giving me feedback about it and I can see that the five keys are truly valuable. So let's read the text. Reading the bible text is so important and memorizing it is also beautiful and valuable.

Philippians 4:4‐5Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.

I told you that when we come under pressure, we pass the pressure to the loved ones. Some people who can't pass the pressure to their families go to the office and pass the pressure on to someone in the office ‐ if you're lucky enough to be a boss, you pass it on to your subordinates. 

The Lord says you don't have to do this ‐ you can be gentle. Why is that? The Lord is there to take your pressure.

Philippians 4:6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Then we have the result of that:

Philippians 4:7And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

It is important to remember that it is not your peace or my peace that we are receiving. It is the peace of God that has come down from heaven itself.

So let's look at this in short form:

1. Praise God and be always joyful

So with any situation that you have to deal with, your first response should be to praise God. I told you that someone said, "Those CRL people are mad. I said, "My deepest sympathies," and they said 'praise the Lord'." Thank God we have a happy madness, not a depressed sanity. Some people are so sane that they commit suicide because they are dealing with reality so powerfully.

So praise God and be always joyful. I gave you a reason for that: He is turning curses into blessings. But He can't do it if you don't have a heart of joy and praise. If you're depressed and sad and think that God will never help you; you'll never get the help from God.

Praising God and being joyful always is a choice you make. Do I feel happy about what he said? You don't have to feel happy about it ‐ just praise God. He abused you? Praise God and be joyful ‐ He is going to turn that abuse into a blessing in His own way. I have been doing this ministry for 40 years and I can tell you that it somehow comes around. If you're doing bad things those also come around ‐ don't worry. God knows how to level everything out.

When bad things happen, remain quiet because it will come around. How do you remain? Praise God and be joyful because He is turning curses into a blessing!

There was a time when my name was mentioned in a whisper;  but we came around. I remember Bishop Prowse telling me, "Can you plead with that newspaper to take away that article?" I asked," Why Your Grace?" Then he said, "I have to keep on explaining to the bishops that it is just an article ‐ not the real situation." So what happened was if someone checked on CRL then my name comes up and with my name comes up beautiful descriptions ‐ but has it ever stopped what God is doing? Never.

The same thing happened in 2006 when we first went to Chalakkudy. Fr. Augustine Vallooran invited me to be a part of the team that preached the first international retreat. It was a great privilege; but somehow, somebody started the mud campaign and when I went, here was this massive campaign in India and I said, "Fr. I'm ready to step down. You're having a problem with this and it's not an issue ‐ I'll follow the retreat and I won't preach." He said, "No. First we'll finish the retreat and then we'll talk about it."

We walked through it, and today, 10 years later, the CRL and Divine do international retreats all over the world in Sydney, US and England, jointly working together by the grace of God.

So the best thing to do is to shut your mouth and thank the Lord. Praise God and be joyful because He has a way of turning curses into blessings. Those who don't have faith hit their head against the wall and injure themselves.

1. Be kind to others

This is especially applicable to our family. We are not really unkind to people outside because we want to keep our name intact. So even people who behave very badly at home behave very well outside. I don't think that that's a problem unless you're a very rich person and you can afford to shout at people ‐ if that is the case then let them be nasty ‐ but otherwise you are nasty to people at home.

Be kind to others. Why? The Lord is near. He will handle it and fix it. You don't have to get knotted up and boil eggs. Just be kind! Jesus said, "Forgive your enemies, be good to those who do wrong to you." Why? Because He is involved in the situation. When you take up the cause, God gives it up. God says, "Okay, it's your job. You handle it."

1. Refuse to be anxious

The bible says do not be anxious but I'd like to emphasize that. Say, "I refuse to be anxious." That's a choice we make and I make that choice. Anxiety will come from various places. There is a beautiful place in psalm 91: The arrow that flies by noonday. When you're unguarded, the arrow will 

come from somebody's word and before you know it, you're rolling in anxiety. When you realize it you refuse to be anxious and make a choice that you're not going down that road.

In the time when our business was under severe pressure I used to bring my stress home. The ones who used to get it were my children because they were young boys and running all over the place. I used to shout at them because my stress was released that way. One day I realized what I was doing and made a decision by myself and said, "I'm not going to take this home and give it to my children."

Once you do that, the grace of God comes into your life to make it possible. So you can live refusing to be anxious. But you can do something else as well:

1. Instead, pray and intercede

This is a connection to refusing to be anxious. Every time you get anxiety coming from somewhere, you make it a moment to pray. Fr. Matthew Naickomparambil has given us a beautiful formula which is an ancient formula of the saints. That is, if you are going through a certain headache ‐ instead of praying for yourself and saying, "O Lord, free me from this anxiety," pray for a thousand other people who are going through the same problem. Then you can say, "Lord, I pray for a thousand people who are having a headache more serious than my own."

The moment you pray that, this falls into perspective. Otherwise I think I'm the most miserable, the unluckiest, most terrible person who lived on the planet and nobody else is as miserable as me. People have also learnt to enjoy self pity and there's a pleasure derived from it. Therefore people don't want to let it go. When you pray and intercede, you are praying for others who are going through the same issue and worse. When you lift it up to the Lord, you're bouncing off the anxiety. 

1. Be thankful in anticipation

God is going to find you a way. Day before yesterday I was praying and thinking about the needs of the CRL. Sometimes the Lord gives us a dream to do something and then after I mention it do I realize how impossible that thing is. The cost of such a thing and how can we ever get something like this done? When I look back I see that God finds a way of doing this. You stand in awe and thanksgiving.

Instead of waiting for that to be manifested, do it now itself! Thank God in anticipation and you'll be the happiest person on the planet.

I preached this for the first time in detail week before last in Australia. When I explained this I saw that people caught it. Lal who is coordinating in Australia told me this amazing experience he received using the five keys. So today we have Lal who has come from Australia for a work project. I'm going to invite Lal to share that experience about how he used the five keys and how it worked.

This happened when Thaththa was there   Every morning I go and check my mail and there was this letter that had come from The Vicroads which is actually handling all mother vehicle matters as well as registrations, driving licenses and everything. So I'm diagnosed as a very bad diabetic and time to time they need to check my eyesight and the entire system.

I actually have this problem of cataracts and I wanted to go for a surgery. I went and saw the surgeon and he said that it's time up for me to go for the cataract surgery. 

I agreed because I thought I might as well get it done. When I went home and checked up, my wife told me that I'm not covered for cataract surgery under my health insurance. Now I realize that there was a reason for this. So I was a little upset and I went and saw the doctor and told him I'm unable to go through this private medical and that I may have to go to Sri Lanka and do it or take some other option. If it was to be done in the public hospital it would've taken one and a half to two years to do ‐ so it is impossible.

So I had this letter from Vicroads saying that my license would be suspended because it was time for me to go for the cataract surgery and I had to go through all the tests and forward the reports. When the letter came I was thinking of calling Thaththa because I needed some advice on what to do. I had this letter from the surgeon because when I thought I was going to do it I did a scan and all the reports said that it has to be done. So I wanted to speak to him and see what to do.

My wife said that Thaththa was having lunch and I thought that I would talk to him after lunch. I got into my vehicle and went to the optometrist ‐ that is another person who can check my eyes and give a report. So I was thinking to myself that it doesn't matter that I'm going for a second opinion even though I knew the scan said I had to go through surgery. That's what I wanted to check up with Thaththa ‐ whether I was going against the Lord in a sense that I know and I'm bluffing. But again I thought I'm just going for a second opinion.

Before meeting the optometrist I spent an hour waiting to be called. The day before, Thaththa had taught us these "Five Keys" and I carried that in my pocket. I had just taken some liking to that and I had this with me and I went to a place to sit in the shopping center and I started praying it and I was thanking the Lord. During that one hour, I did this about 4‐5 times and I was just praising and thanking the Lord. I had nowhere to turn to and didn't know what to do. Each eye would have cost $4000 and it would have been $8000 and that's big money because I don't work there.

 So then the optometrist called me in and checked my eyes. There are three lines that need to be read ‐ the third line is something that is very difficult because my left eye is very bad and I was struggling. But at one stage I could read all three very clearly. Then she told me, "You're through. Your cataract is not bad, you can wait for one year without a problem." 

This was such a big shock and a surprise to me and I broke down. She got excited because over there it's very serious business if a doctor checks you and you start crying. So see got very upset and asked me what she said. I told her that it was nothing to do with her and she was giving me the tissues and everything.

Then I took out the paper on which I had written the five keys and I gave it to her. I told her, "I did this 4‐5 times here because I knew that if I had to be without driving in Australia it is going to be terrible." The public transport system is very tough there. I explained this to her and she was almost sobbing as well. She was a Christian but never practiced and I had to explain each point and she said, "It is so amazing for me to hear something like this and a man of your age getting closer to the Lord and talking about the Lord is so beautiful. You can go on for one more year, but I'm going to put you into an area 40km away from the city and you can go there and get the surgery done. I will recommend you and it will take about 2 months maximum and everything is going to be free."

I thanked the Lord and when I came out to pay, she had sent a nil bill. I asked her why she hadn't charged me and she said, "I was so touched by what happened to you."

Isn't that beautiful? Handling it with the five keys. Because he went through it, a breakthrough happened that he never expected. The first thing is that the third line became visible for him. The surgeon said he had to do the operation immediately so he was given a year. Then he shared the experience because he was at peace with God to the optometrist and she gives him a break and within 2 months, without money, the operation is to be performed. So who's to say that these formulas don't work?

1. Praise God and be always joyful

Thank God I was having lunch! If he had spoken with me, he wouldn't have been listening to God ‐ he would have done what I said. Whatever I would have said would have been his direction. Instead of that he lifted it up through the five keys.

1. Refuse to be anxious

That is what he did. Instead of boiling eggs in his heart and waiting the hour, he did the five keys and refused to be anxious.

What I'm going to do now is I'm going to give you flesh to the keys. When we try to hold on to a promise of God in a crisis, reading the word of God and praying with it can make a big 

difference. So for the first key I am going to give you a psalm. Read the whole psalm like a prescription. When you get up in the morning, read the psalm. When you go to sleep at night, read the psalm. You don't read it to God ‐ you read it to yourself so that you can praise God and be always joyful.

Over the future, for each of the five keys I'm going to give you five directions of scripture. So every time you have a crisis, you have the medicine to deal with it.

Psalm 146:1Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul.

From ancient times, the Hebrews prayed by praising God. Just because somebody ridicules praising God or tells you you're unbalanced or a fool ‐ don't be fooled. Everyone assumes that they know everything about everything. But it is not so. The greatest authorities of one century are laughed at in the next. The greatest theories in one century are laughed at in the next one. Don't worry about what people say because the word of God remains forever.

So first what does it say? Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. Why soul?  Because it is from your depths. You have to praise God from your depths; not just from your mind.

When I first came to the experience it was 1976 and I didn't know anyone but this guy happened to be in Badulla and happened to be my friend. He was in love with the Lord and he used to walk on the road. While walking he would say, "Praise the Lord!" Everyone stops and looks at him and I also felt a little awkward with this guy because I didn't know what time he'll let off a praise the Lord. But if he goes to a house and prays for 5 minutes ‐ he will tell you that there is a charm buried in a place and if you dig it is there. He has a revelation from the Lord.

We went to a place once and he said, "Behind that altar is a curse." I thought he was crossing the line because it was a statue of the Lord Jesus. But behind the statue were letters written by the house owner. He had been angry with the priest and he had written letters of cursing and put it under the statue to pray for everyday. That man broke down because it was a revelation from God and he repented then and there.

But who is this man? To other people he looked an idiot because when walking around he said, "Praise the Lord." Because of that I learnt not to be shy to praise God. Remember that the people who give us an opinion will also die and disappear one day. Just praise the Lord from your depths.

When you're by yourself, how many of us think all the dirty thoughts? If our thoughts can be recorded we would be put into jail. So we are pretending to be beautiful and good and carrying all this filth inside. Instead of that, praise God and let it purify your mind and purify the depths as you praise Him.

Psalm 146:2

I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

I could see that people in the journey can actually do that. I remember when my sister was dying, when she came out of her semiconscious state, the first thing she told me was, "God is good." This is with a broken spine, cancer attacking the brain and death itself ‐ these are the words she carried on her mouth is, "God is good." I understood then that if you're in the journey, even in the most terrible moments you can still praise God.

It's easy to praise God when you have a million rupees ‐ even people who don't believe in God will praise God at moments like that. But you must praise God everyday of your life ‐ open yourself to that leading.

I have made it a practice that if anyone talks to me and says, "I am so‐and‐so," I say, "Praise the Lord." I don't mind what they think because I don't live in their opinion. I live in my relationship with God and I'm very comfortable ‐ I worship and I'm glorifying God in my greeting. It says, "I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live."

Psalm 146:3Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.

You don't have to depend on people because you have a God who is above this. That's why you're not afraid of the opinion of others ‐ you're free to follow the Lord and most often others follow you after some time because they sense that you're internally free to do that. First they laugh and then they follow.

The word says, "Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save." How much other people's opinions matter to us! I find it in myself. Suddenly I find that the arrow has come through my defenses and what someone has said is affecting me. So I have to remove the arrow, apply the medicine of the word, worship the Lord, repent and get the wound healed. It takes a long time because I have opened myself to the attack by thinking too much of the opinion of others.

People who don't have a living connection with God ‐ their only reality is other human beings. Therefore when they are rejected, they can't deal with it. That's why they go through depression, sadness, emptiness, anxiety, stress, no point in living. We can't penetrate the darkness beyond human life into the place where God exists.

Psalm 146:4When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

He is saying not to worry too much about people because they're here today and gone tomorrow. People are not absolute, people are not God, and people do not have control 

over your life. God does, so do not worry too much about others. Of course if they're pointing out a mistake and you see it in your life, you accept it because that's a favour ‐ but beyond that, trying to live in the opinion of others is only going to make you miserable.

I'm sure you've heard the story of the king who loved to dress. One day a tailor came and told him, "I can make beautiful clothing for you." The King was very happy and agreed but then the tailor said, "It is on one condition. Only the wise see it! Others won't see the clothes." So the tailor is stitching but in actual fact he is not doing anything ‐ he is just imaginary stitching. The King comes to look at the dress but he can't see a thing. He doesn't want to admit that he can't see because then he will look like an idiot in front of the others. So he says, "Oh it's wonderful!"

Then the ministers come. The ministers also can't see a thing but they also don't want to admit that because if they do that, the king will think they are idiots. So what do they do anyway? They say, "Oh it's wonderful!" Then the other people come and everyone is appreciating the dress.

Now the day comes when the King has to parade in his new costume. So he pretends to put the cloth and he is stark naked and he is walking among the people. Everyone says, "Oh what a wonderful suit!" Why? Because nobody wants to be an idiot ‐ until one small child says, "The King is naked!" It is the children who shame the wise. That's why Jesus said, "Father, I thank you for you have hidden this from the wise and revealed it to mere children."

To be really internally free, we need to leave people's opinions behind. We become free by trusting in God first. That's how you can rejoice and praise God and be happy always.

Psalm 146:5Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God…

You can penetrate the veil of the situation of your struggle. How? By believing that beyond the situation is God, beyond the circumstance there is God, beyond these people there is God. How do you hold on to Him? By praising and rejoicing in the presence of God in your life.

I've said this earlier and I'm repeating it. I always tell the Lord, "You can't fool me ‐ you pretend that you're poor and that you have nothing. But you're rich and powerful and you can provide whatever we need." I'm not talking just about material things ‐ even security, even a good name, even honour if it is necessary ‐ He can provide. He can put things right if He wants to, He can clear your name if He wants to. But if He doesn't want to; neither do I! I just hold on to Him and tell Him, "You better clear it whenever you want to." Until then, I live in thanksgiving and rejoicing.

So who is this God of Jacob?

Psalm 146:6…the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them ‐‐ the Lord, who remains faithful forever.

A person says, "If you ever need money, you come to me and I will give it to you." They tell it to the people who already have money ‐ never to the people who don't have money. But one day when you ask them, they say, "You just missed it! I gave it to this and gave it to that." People change. How many sad stories I've heard in the last 40 years. People who thought they had everything under control every human being in their pocket, suddenly realized that they could not hold on to anybody.

We have the Lord who remains faithful forever. You have to break through the darkness of the veil. If you don't break through the veil you're stuck here. You breakthrough by prayer ‐ praising and rejoicing ‐ God is turning my curse into a blessing. How do you feed on it? Through psalm 146, line by line. I've told you earlier that it is like bulto. People who have eaten bulto know what I mean.

Bulto is made out of jaggery and sugar and they harden it and if you bite the bulto you'll break your teeth. Instead you have to suck it. When you suck it; that's the art ‐ how long you can keep the bulto without eating it. Then the taste trickles down your throat.

The word of God is bulto in that sense. You can read it like the newspaper and it won't help you, you can read it like a mantra and it won't work. But if you read it quietly, savouring the beauty and the riches and softly ‐ suddenly the dark veil that covers us through these issues opens up and you're seeing the possibility of the immense power of God upon our lives.

Psalm 146:7He upholds the cause of the oppressed…

The powerful serve the powerful, the influential have access to the influential, those who have the resources hobnob with the others who have the resources. So you go to this club and that social gathering and what we are doing is ‐ the people who have are exchanging what they have so that they can have more and they cut off those who cannot.

That is not the case with God. Let's look at it again.

 Psalm 146:7 continuedHe upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.

We give food to many people who are not hungry and we give the best food to them because we want to impress them. Sometimes we might spend so much of money on a dinner that so many hungry people could have eaten instead. Why? Because we want to impress them about how we can do that.

You can see that the oppressed attracts Him, the hungry attract Him.

Psalm 146:7 continuedThe Lord sets prisoners free…

It is like taking injections. If you're going through an oppression and you thank God and read psalm 146, you're being given an injection to rise above it. Food in this case is not just food, but the needs of your life ‐ if you're going through a lack, He will strengthen you through this. If you are imprisoned in a situation, addiction or struggle of your own life; the promise sets you free.

Psalm 146:8…the Lord gives sight to the blind…

As I read this, for me, the greatest blindness is the blindness to God. In a moment of tension and stress, I get it. I become blind to the love, presence and power of God in that moment. So what do I get in return? I get stress, tension and my heart rate goes up, my blood pressure goes up. I know it's because I lost God but I'm blind. My mind cannot deal with it. I know this in my mind but deep inside my unconscious, sub‐conscience, my defenses come out and I'm unable to do anything about it. So we pray that God is able to give us a breakthrough.

Sight to the blind is in the middle of that, He gives us a breakthrough. I always remember Gethsemane when the defenses of Jesus were so provoked and he was sweating blood and he wanted to escape but by faith he broke through. How? He said, "No. God is good all the time." The evidence around him screamed and said, "God has let you down." In fact the cacophony of that chorus was joined by his own internal being. He said, "God, take this cup away from me."

But he broke through the darkness. How? He said, "No, over my life time God has been good. He has been good all the time and He is still good in this situation that I cannot understand." That is to break through by faith.

In the end of August I told you that we are going to do a two day retreat. Please give your names now itself because in this retreat we are going to deal with hope. Hope is a gift from God and how you carry hope when everything falls apart around you. That is Gethsemane and everyone of us has to go through a Gethsemane at one time of our life or the other.

 Here it is,

Psalm 146:8…the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous.

Righteousness in the New Testament is to believe in the revelation of God first of all. That's why in Romans 4, St. Paul clearly says, "A righteousness that comes by faith." Because you believe what God has said, you become right with God and He begins to do things in your life that would normally have never have happened if you hadn't believed. The Lord loves the righteous.

Habakkuk says, "The just man lives by faith." The book of Habbakuk was quoted by St. Paul in the letter to the Romans. Abraham was counted righteous by God because he believed what God told him. When you start believing what God is saying, God is happy with you and puts things right inside your life. But hold on to the promise.

Psalm 146:9The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow…

The alien and the fatherless and the widow have no answer! Yet, God is attracted to them. God is attracted those who have no answer.

Psalm 146:9 continued…but He frustrates the way of the wicked. 

People think they're clever. In the end it has been a waste of time ‐ their achievements, the power turns to straw in their lives. A lot of people don't realize.

Psalm 146:10The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations…

People come and go, people die, we die ‐ but He lives forever.

Today we looked at the first key. As we go through the key, we are giving muscle to the key so that you can use it for your internal journey with the Lord.
