Recordings of literary texts (e.g. of poetry or plays) are excluded.

UJ Where possible an indication of the age and level of instruction for whichmaterials have been designed is given. Longer courses often span several yearsof work. These may, therefore, cover a wide age-range when the whole courseis used. Potential users of courses should, whenever possible, examinematerial and listen to selected parts for themselves to decide whether theyare suitable for particular classes. Selections and examples are available forexamination in the audio-visual section of the Language-Teaching Library atthe Centre for Information on Language Teaching. Teachers should alsonote that inspection and/or sample materials may be available from thepublisher or distributor on request.

One criterion for inclusion in this list has been the availability of coursesin Britain. Normally the descriptions given have be n based on carefulexamination of the various parts of the courses; in a few cases this has notbeen possible and information has been repeated from the publishers'catalogues. Inevitably some descriptions are longer than others because ofthe complexity of the material. Materials published abroad have beenincluded when agencies to supply them in Britain exist, but some can beobtained by special order only.

Details given were as far as possible correct at the time of compilation of thislist, but some may change without previous notice. Before ordering coursesit would be wise for purchasers to check the details and the availability ofthe materials with the publisher or distributor.

Notes of omissions or suggestions for improvement of this list, especiallyfrom teachers, will be welcomed and should be addressed to CI LT.

For the convenience of teachers consulting this list, the materials have beendescribed by a simple classification, which is set out overleaf. The lettersappropriate to each course appear opposite its title (or the title of eachseparate part) in the Contents List. They indicate the level of student forwhom teachers are likely to find the materials useful, and the type ofmaterial in question. This is not a rigid classification, but is intended toguide users of the list quickly to materials most likely to interest them.

Items that appear to be suitable for more than one age group or level ofinstruction are described by as many key letters as seem appropriate, andcategories other than those for which the materials were specifically designedmay well be mentioned. More detailed information may be found in the fulldescription of the materials.

There are no printed or recorded exercises;the course is useful for developing listening/comprehension and reading skills withintermediate students.

A course for students already having a basiccommand of German who wish to extendtheir understanding of the everyday spokenlanguage. The material has been adaptedfrom Erich Kastner's novel "Drei Wanner imSchnee" and was originally broadcast byBBC Radio 3 in Study Session in 1967 andagain in 1968. The textbook contains thetext of the broadcasts, simple grammaticalexplanations, exercises and puzzles, andthe discs contain recordings of the broadcastscenes from which each work unit isdeveloped. Primarily intended for the homestudent, but can be used for intermediatecourses where the development of listeningcomprehension and reading skills are theobjective.

Part I is a 20-unit introductory course foradult or adolescent beginners, designed onmodern audio-lingual lines, but with supple-mentary visual aids. It teaches the basicstructures of the language; using a totalvocabulary of 770 words drawn fromH. Oehler, Grundwortschatz Deutsch (Klett,Stuttgart, 1966).

A normal lesson unit introduces new materialthrough a short dialogue in an adult situa-tional context. This is further developedthrough short structural pattern practices,aural-oral structural drills, variant dialogues,and comprehension exercises. The finalsection gives brief background informationabout aspects of post-war Germany. Eachfifth lesson is a revision unit consisting ofsong and reading material without exercises.The recorded and visual materials to Part Iare available to order.

The supplementary students' workbook(Strukturiibungen und Tests) to the Grundkurscontains two sets of programmed testmaterial. The first set is arranged for self-administering and correction by the student,each basic test being followed by furtherremedial exercises for each of the structuresdealt with, and indications of which sectionsof the textbook need to be revised. Thesecond set consists of sixteen tear-out tests(in the final section of the book) intendedto be checked by the teacher.

Part II is an 18-unit follow-up to the Grund-kurc. The structure of each lesson unit iscomparable to that of Part I with the additionof short prose and verse passages fromcontemporary German authors, from whichfurther reading, repetition, comprehensionand completion exercises are developed.Every third unit is a revision unit based purelyon such tests. By the end of Part II, most ofthe grammar required for GCE '0' level andexaminations of similar standard has beentouched upon.

A two-part audio-visual course in which the

material is designed according to the g:obal-structural principles of the Zagreb-St. Cloudschool. The basic dialogues of each lesson arepresented in situational context, and like thefluency and grammatical drills that follow them,are visually illustrated frame by frame both on thefilmstrips and in the students' textbook. Thesituations deal with the general recurrent themesof adult and family life. The Part I book containsa German-English vocabulary section at the end,together with a limited number of printedexercises for oral and written follow-up work tothe last eight lessons. The Part II book has a fullerprovision of written exercises for all twenty-five ofits lessons, and a German-English vocabulary.

Level One introduces the basic structures of thelanguage in twenty lesson units by exploitingtwenty basic "Bestimmungsfragen". The course is centred on the life of a Germanfamily living in 1<oln-Rodenkirchen and contains agreat deal of factual information about life in LheFederal Republic. A total vocabulary of about1400 words of high frequency count is used;particular attention is given to the practice of theword order of main clauses and certain types ofsubordinate clause, the present, future and perfecttenses of most verbs and the past tense ofauxiliaries. The full declension of articles andadjectives is taught, with the exception of genitiveforms. No particular emphasis is given to theteaching of plural forms of nouns.

The first six units are concerned purely withdeveloping listening/comprehension and speakingskills. By lesson 7 (where past tense forms firstappear), simple reading material is introduced forpupils, and for lessons 11-20 suitable writtenwork and further reading material is provided in a"lesebuch".

"Frisch Begonnen" was originally broadcast duringthe Autumn and Spring terms of 1968.69 andwill be transmitted again in the correspondingterms of 1969-70.

An adult beginners' course, the basic lesson materialof which was originally broadcast in a series ofthirty programmes in BBC Radio 3 Study Sessionin 1968-69. The basic dialogues of the series aredue to be rebroadcast in December 1969/January1970, and it is planned to rebroadcast the series infull later in 1970-71, starting in the Autumn Term.

The course is based on a story which revolves rounda travel agency in a typical German town and thelanguage is that most useful in general social andbusiness or pleasure travel situations. There is closecontrol of the amount of new vocabulary introducedin each lesson unit, so that it never exceeds twentyto twenty-five words. Verbs are used in the present(which also acts as a future tense for most of thecourse), perfect, and the past tense of modalauxiliaries, is also brought in. All cases are usedexcept the genitive. Sentence utterances are keptshort and the style is conversational.

Textbooks are obtainable from BBC Publicationswho also supply a supplementary kit of teachingnotes, slides and drill tapes to give further help tothe teacher with organised classes in exploiting thebroadcast material.
