They managed to get behind the building without anyoneseeing them and were just lighting up, when all of asudden, a spark from Benny's match flew right over ontoJuan's nylon jacket. His jacket and clothes ignited!

Benny yelled to Ricky, "Take off your jacket and wrapit around Juan!" Then he threw Juan to the ground androlled him over and over to put out the flames. Rickyran to get Mr. Vgsquez, the school nurse.

After calling the hospital and asking them to send anambulance, Mr. Vgsquez covered Juan with a blanket, andwaited with him while Mrs. Bejarano, one of the teachers, tried tooreach his parents. The ambulance came immediately,so Mr. Vasquez went with Juan to the hospital, and toldMrs. Bejarano to have his parents meet them there.

The next thing Juan knew, he was in the intensive care unitat Memorial Hospital with very bad burns.

After a few days Juan was in less pain and was reallybecoming bored when the door opened and in came hismother and father. He was never so happy to see anyone inhis life! "Do you know who's outside waiting to see you,Juan?" asked his father.

"My friends, Estela and Cipriano, maybe?" he guessed.

Mr. Vasquez wheeled Juan down the hallway where theymet many people whom he knew. "What do all these peopledo?" Juan asked.

"Well, the nurses are responsible for three things; Help-ing the doctors, giving medicine, and soothing patients;but they could never do their work without, the help ofthe hospital attendents," explained Mr. Vasquez.

"What's a hospital 'attendant?" Juan asked.

"Well, hospital attendants are sometimes called order-lies or nursing aides. They help with all the "comfort"duties. They bathe and dress patients, make beds, helpin feeding when patients are too sick to feed themselves, and other similar jobs," said Mr. Vasquez.

°That sounds like girls' work Juan thought, so he said,"I guess that only women are nurses aides. Men wouldn'tbe caught dead doing those things!"

"Oh, Juan," laughed Mr. \rgsquez, "if you really think so,then you're very wrong. You'd better get over that old-fashioned idea. Lots of men are nursing aides, andthey're very good at it too."

"Well" Juan asked, "what do you have to know to get to bea nursing aide?"

Mr.Vgsquez explained, "You've got to have a high schooldiploma before you can even apply for the job. Then, youget a couple of weeks of on-the-job training. During thistime, you work with a registered nurse to learn your job.You take temperatures and answer patient calls, as wellas other things until you understand your job as a nursingaid."

"Those are easy jobs. Can anyone be a nursing attendant?"Juan asked.

"Not exactly," replied Mr. VAquez. "Attendants have tobe prepared to do some household and nursing jobs thatare not very pleasant. Besides that, hospital attendantssometimes work at inconvenient hours, like during thenight and on weekends. After all, hospitals are opentwenty-four hours a day, seven days a week."

"Another thing you've got to think about is whether ornot you can show sympathy towards people who are sick.Because of the way they feel, they might be cranky withyou. Do you think you'd enjoy taking care of people whoare sick or injured?"

Juan said, "I'd have to think about it. I don't know if Icould handle that. I can tell you one thing, though, Isure haw changed my mind about how easy an attendant'sjob is."

They both laughed as Mr. Vdsquez wheeled Juan back :+ritohis room.
