Doctoral Programs in Social Economics and Poli t ical Economy in the United States
The American Economic Assoc ia t i on and the American A g r i c u l t u r a l Economic Assoc ia t i on publ ished recen t l y the t h i r d e d i t i o n of Guide to Graduate Studies in Economics add A g r i c u l t u r a l Economics. 1
Much improved, compared to the former e d i t i o n s , and wel l ar ranged, t h i s usefu l book shows tha t graduate s tud ies in economics are o f fe red at 238 i n s t i t u t i o n s of h igher l ea rn ing in the United S ta tes . Of these 113 o f f e r Master degrees only and 125 also the Ph.D. degree. However, 65 i n s t i t u t i o n s did not re tu rn the ques t i onna i re ea r l y enough to be inc luded in t h i s s tudy. Missing are the i n fo rma t i ons from 50 i n s t i t u i o f f e r i n g only Master degrees and 15 c o n f e r r i n g the Ph D ons . . degree. Thus, llO doctoral programs are l isted (to which programs in Agricultural Economics are added).
Required for the Ph.D. degree are quite generally courses in General Economic Theory ( l isted by 59 ins t i tu t ions) , Microeconomic Theory (83), Macroeconomic Theory (79), Mathematical Economics (64) and Welfare Theory (46). In addition, many programs l i s t seperately Econometrics ( lOl), Economic and Social Statist ics (24), Economic Fluctuation and Forecasting (33). A great number (46) of f ields of specialization are offered of which at least two have to be chosen by Ph.D. candidates.
