• The UK is an island state. It covers a territory of two large islands - Great Britain and Ireland - and several smaller ones. Its coast is over 6,000 miles long. Great Britain may be a small island by Russian standards, but geographically it is varied... In England you are never very far from the coast and there are lots of seaside resorts. It has a mild climate. It is never very cold or very hot. There's steady rainfall throughout most of the year. The main passenger ports Rams gate, Folkston, Heathrow and Gatwick Airports are in the Southeast. It's a rich country, one of the richest countries in the world.

Great Britain lies on the Atlantic coast of Western Europe,

separated from France by only 34 km of water. It is made up of

3 countries: England, Scotland and Wales.

Though England can't be considered as a very hilly country

still is far from being flat everywhere. The most important

range of mountains is the Pennine range. It stretches at a

distance of about 250 km. The valleys which separate the

various mountains from each other contain some beautiful

lakes( Windmere, Grasmere, Coniston Water, Ennerdale Water

and so on and so foth).

It is famous for its overwhelming Buckingham Palace (the official home of the Queen), where there are 600 beautiful rooms, Queen's Gallery with paintings, drawings and furniture from the royal collection, a huge swimming-pool and a cinema. The Palace is surrounded by 40 acre private garden, where the Queen walk with her beloved dogs. SUPERSTITIONSIn GB

Good luck - Black cats are lucky.

- Clover is a small plant. Usually it has three leaves, but a few have four. A clover with four leaves brings good luck.- A horseshoe over the door of a new home brings good luck. But the horseshoe must be the right way up. The luck runs out of a horseshoe if it’s upside down.- On the first day of the month it’s lucky to say ‘white rabbits’.- It’s good luck to see two magpies.- Catch falling leaves in autumn and you’ll have good luck. Every leaf means a lucky month in the next year.

Bad luck- Never open an umbrella in the

house. That’s very bad luck.- Never break a mirror - that means seven years bad luck.- It’s bad luck to see just one magpie.- Don’t walk under a ladder.- Don’t walk past somebody on the stairs.- The number thirteen is very unlucky (and Friday the 13th is a very unlucky date).

  Who really discovered America?

• For centuries, Christopher Columbus has managed to capture the public imagination and is remembered in history as the man who discovered America. Despite the fact that this is clearly not true, it has become impossible to turn this 'history' on its head. Columbus had actually set off in search of India and it is clear from his diary that this is what he thought he had found. Moreover, people had been living in America, the land he 'discovered' , for many thousands of years before he arrived. It is difficult to know why his reputation has survived so long.

• Columbus wasn't even the first European to reach America. That had already happened 500 years before. In 982, Eirik the Red, chief of the Viking tribes on the island of Iceland, set sail and with the many people who went with him, set up a colony on the coast of Greenland.

• It is in this light that we should judge the achievements of Columbus. In many ways he was certainly a hero, but the fact remains that he is famous for something that was achieved by someone 500 years before.

Page 33: Do You Want to Enjoy the World English Tour? This lesson is for you then. Wonderful adventures Exciting facts Interesting Places Enjoyable trips

• Why is Columbus remembered in history?

• Is it true or not? • What can you say about this fact? • Where had he actually set off? • Why do people think so? • What about the people living on that

land? • So Columbus wasn't even the first

European to reach America, was he? • What had happened 500 years before? • But in many ways he was certainly a

hero, wasn't he?

• The USA stretches from the heavily industrialized, metropolitan Atlantic coast, across the rich farms of the Great Plains, over the Appalachian and the Rocky Mountains to the densely populated West coast. Alaska and the island state of Hawaii are detached from the main mid-continental group of 48 states. America is the land of physical contrasts, including the weather. Most of the USA is the temperate zone with four distinct seasons, while the northern states and Alaska have extremely cold winters, and the southern parts of Florida, Texas, California have warm weather year round.

• New England, made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

• The Middle Atlantic, comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.

• The South, which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.

• The Midwest, a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

Australia … a very confusing place

Page 46: Do You Want to Enjoy the World English Tour? This lesson is for you then. Wonderful adventures Exciting facts Interesting Places Enjoyable trips

TERRA AUSTRALIS INCOGNITA

• Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the bottom half of the planet. It is recognizable from orbit because of many unusual features, including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge;' a wall of sheer cliffs which plunge deep into the girding sea. Geologists assure us that this is simply an accident of geomorphology and plate tectonics, but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight" proving that not only are they covering up a more frightening theory, but they can't spell either.

• The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the place. Where other land masses and sovereign lands are classified as either continent, island or country, Australia is considered all three. Typically, it is unique in this.

Page 47: Do You Want to Enjoy the World English Tour? This lesson is for you then. Wonderful adventures Exciting facts Interesting Places Enjoyable trips

TERRA AUSTRALIS INCOGNITA

• The second confusing thing about Australia are the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and Sheep. It is true that of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them. However, there are curiously few snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all.

• The last confusing thing about Australia is the inhabitants. First, a short history: Some time around 40,000 years ago, some people arrived in boats from the north. They ate all the available food, and lot of them died. The ones that survived learned respect for the balance of nature, man's proper place in the scheme of things, and spiders. They settled in, and spent a lot of the intervening time making up strange stories.

It is bounded on the north by the Torres Strait and the Timor Sea, on the east by the Coral and Tasman seas, and on the south and west by the Indian Ocean. The continent and the island of Tasmania, off the eastern part of the south coast, make up the Commonwealth of Australia.

Australia is a federation of six states and two territories. Australia has a parliamentary system of government based on that of the UK, and the state and federal struc tures are broadly similar. vided among the states on a population basis. Australia is a monarchy, but although Britain's king or queen is also

Australia's, Australia is fully autonomous.
