CEO’s MessageUNDERSTANDABLY, much of the speculation in relation toFremantle’s prospects for the 2003 Season focuses on theprospect of the Club making the finals for the first time sinceentering the competition in 1995.

Clearly, our supporters yearn for September action, and the football world is slowly coming around to the factthat Fremantle has built a quality young list.

Why is it then that as a Club, we continue to play downthe importance of making finals in 2003?

Sure it would be tremendous for our supporters, who haveexperienced some dark times, and yes it would remove the‘monkey on our back’ as the only team not to play finals. It would also be great for the players and their developmentto experience finals pressure.

All terrific, but a short term trip to the finals is not what thisClub is about. We are about putting together a football club, and a football team that is capable of making the finals for anumber of years running in order to have a genuine shot at thePremiership in any one of those Seasons.

Making the finals as a one-off experience is like having a bignight out – feels great at the time, but you feel shocking in themorning. Seasons only become memorable in the long termwhen you win the Premiership, and the fact is this generallyrequires consistent long term performance.

The question we ask ourselves is, “are we on track to win thePremiership?”. And the answer is yes, based on genuine talentin the abilities and attitude of the player group, and the talentand commitment of those responsible for the development ofthe team.

We will ask that same question in October 2003. What iscrucial is that the answer is still yes, regardless of whetherwe make the finals or not this Season.

Rest assured, Fremantle will have its day.

WITH A YEAR’S experienceat Fremantle behind him,an enthusiastic group ofplayers, a first-class supportteam and programs in place,Senior Coach Chris Connollyis quietly optimistic about thecoming season.

“We expect to improve thisseason, as individuals and asa team,” said Connolly. “Howthat equates to win-loss onthe premiership ladderdepends on how well ouropposition improves.”

Season 2002 gave Connollyand his coaching staff theopportunity to sort out theplaying list needed to developa team that can be aconsistent finals contender.

“We now have a very younglist, second youngest in the

AFL, and we would expect theplayers on the list to spendmany, many years together”,Connolly said.

For Connolly the aim is tobuild the chemistry so theteam can really come throughtogether. “It’s a long-termproposition, in football it’sall about one day winninga premiership.”

“That’s what the whole thingis about from our point ofview,” Connolly said. “We areon track to one day do exactlythat – win a premiership.”

Connolly consistently drivesone fact home – over the past18 years, 16 of the premiershave been first or second onthe ladder and this puts theposition very clearly, the teammust work into that bracket to

be a dominant team in the AFLcompetition.

“We have to be realistic as towhere we are at now and howlong it will take us to put thatquality team together,”Connolly said. “People aredesperate for us to make theeight but it’s pointless unlessyou can make your way intothe top two at some stage.”

“We’ve just got to make surewe keep to our plan and keepadding to our list around theage bracket of 22 which is theheart and soul of our club.”

And a change in the team’sstyle of play is planned. “Westructured up more defensivelylast year and we will be moreattacking this year,” Connollysaid. “That will be linked intothe structure of the team on

the ground and also in the waywe move the ball.”

There will be some naturalimprovement in the team thisyear and some new playersthat Connolly expects to havean impact. “Des Headland, ofcourse, who will play midfield/forward, Aaron Sandilands offour rookie list, CliveWaterhouse, returning frominjury and Byron Schammer, our No. 1 draft pick,” Connollysaid. “And others who had aninjury-interrupted 2002 suchas Anthony Jones, DanielHaines and Graham Polakhave all trained well.”

For Connolly it is all shapingas another very exciting yearas the team and players buildon the improvements of 2002.

FOR DAVID FORBES and newwife Patricia there can be nobetter demonstration of theirdedication to the Dockersthan to have their weddingphotographs taken onFremantle Oval and have theClub’s theme song played asthey left the reception for theirhoneymoon.

After having known each otherfor just over 3 years, Davidand Patricia were married on25th January this year.

An initial meeting wasorganised through a mutualfriend who just had to get thetwo mad Dockers supporterstogether. This first meetingwas socially at a pub.

But the social meeting led toa bet being made – if theDockers beat the Eagles inthe Western Derby in July1999, then David would takePatricia on a date. Well, ashistory shows that was thefirst Derby win for theDockers, they went on theirdate and now are husbandand wife.

Every speech at the receptionmentioned the Dockers atsome point. And the Club songto farewell them as a marriedcouple was the icing on thecake.

They have been to every homegame since David won the betand are looking forward tothis season as one that willmake the Dockers a force inthe AFL.

They clearly have the passion.

ON 11 MARCH, the Clublaunched its new advertisingcampaign aiming to capturethe essence of the FremantleFootball Club – the passion ofits supporters.

Regarded by many as themost fervent and loudestsupporters in the AFL, the

Club’s advertising campaignseeks to reflect the meaningof the passion for your team.

The advertising campaignbreaks all typical forms ofsports marketing, startingwith a new televisioncommercial that is barelyrecognisable as a footy ad,

without a spectacular mark orrunning goal in sight.

The commercial asks thequestion, “what is moreimportant – going to the gameor the temptation of yourbeautiful partner?” If you’re aDockers supporter the choiceis easy – passion for yourteam wins the day.

The campaign is the brainchildof Fremantle’s new advertisingagency, The Brand Agency. The Brand decided to goagainst all current trendsin sports advertising anddo something completelydifferent – focus on theteam’s supporters andnot their players.

“We wanted a campaign thattruly reflected what theFremantle Football Club isabout and what it means to bea member and support ourexciting young team,” said theClub’s CEO Cameron Schwab.“The campaign is not justabout the spectacle orexcitement of being at thegame, but what it means tobe a Fremantle supporter –passionate above all otheroptions.”

The campaign actively asksthe question “Do you havethe passion?”

The Brand’s creative teamCraig Buchanan and DesHameister were the forcebehind the campaign, assisted by Alex Tew.The commercial was shot inone weekend by renowneddirector, Paul Cutter.

Con has been involved infootball continually since1941 from junior football inFremantle right up to thepresent time as TeamManager for the FremantleFootball Club.

The legend’s philosophyis simple, “I just lovecompetitive sport, I naturallyjust enjoy football. It’s thefact that people have tobecome part of a team. The world today is veryindividualistic and selfish andfootball makes you becomepart of a team and thinkabout other people. It’s a bigcharacter building asset.”

After winning the WAFL GrandFinal in 1965, Con wastransferred as a Police Officerto Katanning where he notonly captained/coachedWanderers Football Club butalso co-founded the CentralGreat Southern JuniorSports Council.

He also captained/coached theEast Fremantle Sunday LeagueTeam as well as DonnybrookFootball Club. Both teams wonat least one premiership while

ENTERING his second yearas Fremantle Senior Coach,Chris Connolly has beenable to implement a morethorough and detailedprogram to prepare the teamfor what is shaping as anexciting season forFremantle.

The team started itscampaign for 2003 with agrueling 6 day-a-week pre-season training program on4 November 2002. With lastseason’s pre-season focusedon conditioning to improvethe confidence level of theplayers, this season’s programhas continued that focus butwith an increased skillelement.

“They have been doing acombination of strengthtraining, speed endurancetraining, individual skills and

team skills, and these havebeen the four main areas offocus,” Connolly said.

And in summing up the pre-season, “It’s been aphysically-demanding pre-season program in a13-week bracket for themajority of the playerswith a two-week break

over Christmas. The Club’sgym was opened everysecond day over the breakwith up to 14 players comingin to train, such is theattitude of the players.”

“I said right from the startwhen I first came here thatthe most pleasing aspect of

the whole Club has been

the attitude of the players,”Connolly said. “They are reallydisciplined and desperate forsuccess”.

The players are hands-onunder active coachingguidelines for about 16.5hours a week. That doesn’tinclude their recovery andinjury treatment and

education programs.

Players are also educated torest as such intense trainingundertaken in the off-seasonaffects sleeping and eatingpatterns. The Club’sconditioning and medicalteams constantly monitor theaffects of the training

programs as it is such adramatic drain on the body. But for Connolly, the intense,full-on training program isessential. “I reckon AustralianRules football is the mostphysically-demanding sport inthe world

because of its nature – bigoval, two hours of play andcontact from every angle, soyou’ve got to do a lot of workand be durable during theseason.”

The four-team competitionwas conducted during the pre-season as a light-heartedbreak from the gruellingtraining schedules andincluded indoor beachvolleyball, a cricket match

and the deciding eventconducted in Bunbury, the putting competition.

For players and staff alike, the Bunbury camp was anoverwhelming success.“To see the enjoyment of thekids having a kick-to-kick andhand-pass with the AFLplayers was a very enjoyableexperience for the players andcoaches and we can’t wait todo it again next year,” said

WHILE THE players train hardand the coaching staff lay theplans and prepare the team foreach game, very few peoplesee the massive efforts eachweek of the Club’s PropertyManager Pat Watson.

An association with footballclubs stretching back to 1955with the East Perth FootballClub, Pat’s experience helpshim with the “little bit ofpressure” that each weekbrings to his job.

Pat is responsible for all theClub’s gear not only for trainingbut also getting it to and from

matches efficiently and safely, including away matches.

And to top it off, he’s alsoin charge of the laundering. With about 600 footballjumpers, track suits, shorts, socks, towels and sheets, there’s plenty to keep him,and the laundry, busy.

But the major challenge forPat comes during the season. And what a challenge it is –getting the equipment tomatches, particularly in theEastern States, is like a finely-tuned military operation.

When the team travels, Pat hasto pack footballs, socks, twosets of short-sleeved playingjumpers and one set of long-sleeved jumpers, trainingjumpers and training shirts, shorts, tracksuits, blankets, stretchers, medical cases, whistles and mouthguards, drinking cups, whiteboards, markers and pens, team nametags, sheets, large towels andsmall towels, scissors, drinks, mats, money bags, soap, eskies, an ultrasound machine, ice bags and bandages, gloves, runners’ gear, binoculars, computer equipment, wetweather gear, communicationequipment, banners and signs,a bootstudders box, a timeclock box, and even after-game snacks.

For games in Adelaide, Sydneyand Brisbane, Pat also has totake massage tables, a drinktray, water bottles, coolerbags and buckets, sunscreenand an urn and coffee cups.

When it comes to loading andunloading at the airports,on and off team buses Patis helped by the teammanager and players.

On game day, Pat leaves theteam’s hotel for the groundup to two hours before theplayers to set up for theirarrival.

And for the return trip Pat startsall over again this time with theaddition of players’ bags.

This year Pat’s got an addedproblem with three Sundaygames when the team willcatch an early flight home sohe will have to have to starthis packing before the end ofthe game. “There’ll be a bit ofpressure,” Pat says. “We’ll begoing flat out but I’m surewe’ll manage it okay.”

Despite the pressure, Patwouldn’t have it any other way.“It’s a job where you can’tafford to make a mistake andI haven’t made one yet, touchwood,” Pat says.

Freo’s big ship set to sailWHEN 211cm AaronSandilands makes his AFLdebut this season he willbecome the tallest player everto play in the AFL, surpassingformer Docker Matthew Burtonby 1cm. And there’sexcitement at FremantleFootball Club about what Aaronhas to offer the team afterbeing promoted from theRookie List at the end of 2002.

Recruited from East FremantleFootball Club, Aaron says thehighlight of his career so faris making the Docker’s seniorlist this year. “My main rolethis year will be to providesupport for ruckman, TroySimmonds,” says Aaron.“I’m there to help him outa bit and learn from Troy.”

There is no doubt thatFremantle’s “big ship”, asSenior Coach Chris Connollyhas named Aaron, is used tothe attention.

But being tall also has itsdisadvantages as far asAaron’s concerned.

“It’s probably got me in footy

to where I am now.” But as forshopping and sleeping goesthen it’s another story. Aaronis currently looking onAmerican websites to getfootball boots (he is a size 18),and to find pants long enough.

As for sleeping, “I’ve got aqueen-size bed at home andI sleep diagonally on that butwhen we’re away I have tojust try and cope with thedouble-bed.”

While everyone notices theobvious, there is more toAaron than what you see.

Growing up in Mt Barker, Aaronhas always wanted to be afootballer. “As a kid, I watchedDad play footy and I’ve justalways been into footy.”

Being an AFL player placeshigh demand on any player’stime, with not only training andgames but also with specialappearances at hospitals, clinics and special events.

But Aaron wouldn’t have it anyother way, “I love meetingpeople and helping in thecommunity and I believe AFL

players are in a great positionto help where we can in manyways,” Aaron says. “I enjoythat part of being a player evenif it means that lots of peoplekeep asking me about myheight or say WOW when Imeet them.”

When Aaron isn’t playingfootball he likes to play a bitof golf, to take in some fishingand is currently enrolled in ascuba diving course the Clubhas on offer for players.

When Aaron’s career is over

he wouldn’t mind owning hisown business.

Aaron would love to play withFremantle Football Club for hisentire footy career and beplaying when Fremantle wintheir first premiership.

Aaron is slightly nervousabout his AFL debut but isdetermined to make his markand play good consistentfooty. He is looking to learnand develop this year and beable to help the team alongthe journey.

WHAT STARTED as a hobby fora school teacher 20 years agois now a full-time job for theClub’s Video and StatisticsManager, Norm Tame and onethat is getting busier as thedemand for the informationgrows rapidly.

It’s only when the season endsthat Norm actually seesdaylight on his way to andfrom work. But he wouldn’thave it any other way.

“I’m working in anenvironment that I love –being able to mix footballand technology,” says Norm.

Norm has been with theDockers since the start, initially working part-timebefore moving full-time in 1997.

“For many years I was partof the stats team at theClaremont Football Club(where he is a life member)and when I started with the

Dockers I was still teachingduring the day and every otherwaking hour was virtuallydevoted to the club doingstatistics and video recordingswith help from Les Barry,”Norm said. “In those daysit involved grabbing thenewspapers and feeding inall the statistics”.

Now there are seven peopleinvolved in gathering theinformation needed for theClub’s coaching staff. Whenin match mode Norm sits inthe coaches’ box processingstatistics received via modemfrom Champion Data as wellas Club stats from theFremantle statisticians.

On match day Norm has threelaptops. The first laptop feedsin the basic statistics, thesecond is used to keep aneye on interchanges to knowexactly what time each playeris on the ground and the third

to capture the game on visionvia the television broadcastercovering the game.

There are two main callersin the coach’s box and onekeyboarder working the firstlaptop computer recording allthe stats and another two tothree people watching what’shappening in front or behindthe action at those areas thecoaches specifically want toknow about.

Game day is a constant feedof information to the coachingstaff. “I also have a small minidigital recorder which can beused during breaks in thegame so the coach caninstantly replay incidentsbefore addressing the player(s)concerned,” Norm said.

The task is not made any easierwhen the team is on the road.Norm’s technology travels withhim and shares his hotel roomas he prepares the away gamestatistics support for thecoaches. And when the game isover, Norm is still going strongpreparing copies of the gamevision onto the coaches’laptops for them to work on

during the journey home.

Statistics play a vital role withthe coaches always looking atthe data to gain that extra 1%necessary for success. However, Norm doesn’t believethere is too much reliance onstatistics in today’s football.

“Good vision of the game isvital and at the moment wecan only have access to thematerial presented by thetelevision broadcaster,”Norm said. “They give you theentertainment view of the gamebut from a coaching viewpointthe vision is too close.”

Norm is assisted during theweek by AFL trainee, RogerHayden in producing videos forthe coaches and individualplayer tapes from each game. And just to add a little bitextra, Norm also fills the roleas the club’s video historian.

“We’ve got the club’s historyon video, from games to mediaappearances - every bit of actionevery player has been in and notmany clubs get the opportunityto start from scratch and haveits history preserved in thisway,” Norm says.

WHILE THE Docker’sCommunity Camp in Bunburywas an overwhelmingsuccess, it was soured duringthe intra-club match with theknee injury sustained by JustinLongmuir early in the game.

With a fear running that Justinwould miss the season, results of a MRI scan on theSunday following the matchshowed a more favourableresult of only 6 to 8 weeksout of action.

Justin was into rehabilitation first thingMonday morning. But whatwas involved in Justin’srehabilitation?

The Club’s medical andrehabilitation staff developeda strict and demandingprogram for Justin that wouldkeep him on the sidelines fromtraining and practice matcheswhile his injured knee wasrestored to full strength.

Three physiotherapy sessionsper day with ClubPhysiotherapist, Jeff Boyle, were followed by specificstrengthening exercises in theClub’s gymnasium. Althoughthe knee was the focus of therehabilitation program, it wasalso essential to maintainJustin’s general fitness gainedover the long pre-seasonprogram.

Once the knee had settled, alight aerobic program was setin place including swimming, water running and endlesskilometres on the exercisebike. His progress was

monitored by RehabilitationCo-Ordinator, Simon Eastaugh.

As a preventative measure tostop the injury recurring,Boyle took Justin through anagility program that assistswith change of direction, twisting and jumping on thefield. A knee-brace specificallydesigned for Justin was wornas his rehabilitation programprogressed.

Club skills coach, Kevin Ball,a biomechanist, was then atwork re-educating Justin onkicking technique.

Justin joined team trainingafter 4 weeks of his programon a limited basis andresumed contact trainingshortly thereafter.

A strong determination to gethis knee back to full strength,Justin has worked hard on hisrehabilitation program thatsees him return to full matchplay on time.
