Standard •  HS-LS-1-7: Use a model to illustrate that cellular respiration is

a chemical process whereby the bonds of food molecules and oxygen molecules are broken and the bonds in new compounds are formed resulting in a net transfer of energy.

FLT •  I will be able to model the overall process of

cellular respiration by completing Cellular Respiration Model

    Cellular Respiration Model

Cellular Respiration Model Activity • Follow the directions on the paper

carefully to create a model of cellular respiration inputs and outputs • You must color your model according to

the instructions • When finished, quietly work on ToC

    assignments or study

    1. Cut out both mitochondria and five arrows

    2. Label the “matrix”

    and “inner membrane” on both

3-4. Fold the top mitochondria + glue bottom halves

    5. Label and color arrows while your glue dries 6. Top: draw cycle + label “Krebs Cycle”

    7. Bottom: Circle membrane + label “Electron Transport Chain”

    8. Color! •  Membranes: red or dark red •  Matrix: pink or orange

    9. Glue first three arrows on top as instructed

4.4: Overview of Cellular Respiration Key idea: The overall process of cellular respiration converts

    sugar into ATP using oxygen.

    Recall: Photosynthesis Recall

    • Heterotrophs = organisms that must consume to obtain energy • Humans eat plants, and use

their sugars to make ATP • Which cell organelle makes

    ATP?

    What is Cellular Respiration?

Cellular Respiration: •  Cellular respiration (CR) = Breaks down glucose to

make ATP. Occurs in the mitochondria in cells. •  Aerobic process = oxygen required to occur

Cellular Respiration Occurs in Two Steps (mostly)

    Steps •  Glycolysis (pre-step) 1.  Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2.  Electron Transport Chain

Steps (write on the side) Pre-step: Glycolysis –  Anaerobic (no O2 needed) –  Breaks apart glucose

    1.  Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2.  Electron Transport Chain

    Steps •  Pre-step: Glycolysis 1. Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle –  Aerobic –  Releases CO2 –  Creates energy carriers

    Steps •  Pre-step: Glycolysis 1. Krebs/Citric Acid Cycle 2. Electron Transport Chain –  Aerobic –  Energy carriers create LOTS OF ATP! –  O2 H2O

    Cellular Respiration Equation

    Equation for Cellular Respiration:

    C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

    Big ideas

    • Almost a reverse of photosynthesis • Occurs in mitochondria • The goal is to create ATP! ! • It is an aerobic process – it requires oxygen!

Pair-Share-Respond 1.  In which organelle does cellular respiration

occur? 2.  List the steps of cellular respiration 3.  Distinguish between the terms “aerobic” and

“anaerobic” 4.  What are the OUTPUTS (products) for cellular

respiration? 5.  Which stage of cellular respiration makes lots

    of ATP?
