1. Mutual Distrust After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the U.S. tried to overthrow the Soviet government. During World War II, Stalin was angry at the U.S. and Britain because he felt they did not help him enough during WWII. After World War II, Stalin took over Eastern Europe. He did not hold free elections. 2. Two Ideologies The U.S. was dedicated to Democracy and Capitalism. The USSR was dedicated to Communist dictatorship and the overthrow of capitalism

3. The Arms Race The U.S. and Soviet Union were always building new and more powerful weapons. 4. Competition in the Third World The U.S. and Soviet Union were each trying to win the hearts and minds of people in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
