Message from the Rosh Kollel

Dear Friends,Welcome to the 16th Annual Dinner.

Welcome to another celebration of the Kollel in our community! This year’s theme is “Growing with Torah, growing with you.” Look around at the landscape of America and you’ll notice that wherever there is a Kollel, there is growth. A Kollel generates and encourages growth - growth in our knowledge of Torah, growth in our connection to Hashem, and growth in our trust in Him. All of this leads to demographic growth in the community as well. There is more of a focus on our true purpose in life, more of a determination to have these treasures in our lives and in the lives of our family.

This year’s honorees are families who have gravitated to the Kollel and have grown through their learning of Torah. Dr. Israil can be found coming to the Kollel at 5:30 A.M. to learn the daf with Rabbi Bauminger. He can be seen in the evenings learning with Rabbi Prupas or with his son-in-law Yitzchok Kraftmann. His boys can be seen learning and davening at the Kollel, and his wife enjoys going to the Kesher program with her granddaughter. This connection to the Kollel has allowed the Pendrak’s to grow in their Yiddishkeit and it has had a ripple effect on their friends in the community and back to the Kollel itself.

Rabbi Ari Silver has made a priority of continuous nightly learning with his chavrusa, Rav Sholom Kelemer, and this steadfastness is witnessed and absorbed

by his children. Mrs. Silver’s excitement to attend Kesher with her girls is only surpassed by their own enthusiasm for those special Sunday mornings with their mother.

A special thanks to Mrs. Silver for the professional and dignified manner in which she manages the Kollel office. With her calm demeanor she gets the job done efficiently, and we appreciate her dedication to the Kollel.

Like fine wine, working with Rabbi Zeffren and Rabbi Prupas has only gotten better with time. The diversity of talents and strengths has B”H led to a strong team-effort in the day-to-day running of the Kollel, the myriad programs that go on regularly, and the dinner campaign especially. May Hashem repay all your efforts on behalf of the Kollel with much .משפחות from your נחת

To our long-standing president, Sid Laytin: you continue to amaze so many with your tireless efforts on behalf of the klal. The Kollel has been a beneficiary of your wisdom and leadership, and I have found a חבר טוב in the process.

Ted and Phyllis Kosloff continue to lead the Kollel’s efforts to raise the level of Torah in our community. May Hashem repay them manifold for all their many good deeds.

Message from the President of the Board

With tremendous gratitude to Hashem Yisborach, I welcome you to the 16th Annual Dinner of the Philadelphia Community Kollel. Thank you for joining us and for your generous support of our ad journal.

Mazel tov  to the worthy honorees, Drs. Yisroel and Inna Pendrak, Guests of Honor, and Rabbi Ari and Netayna Silver, recipients of the Young Leadership Award, both actively involved with the Kollel and great role models of families dedicated to Torah and the klal.

The success of tonight’s dinner undoubtedly is due both to these wonderful honorees as well as to the dedication of our hard-working dinner committee. Thank you goes to Jordan and Susan Hullman, Michael and Jody Molinari, Moshe and Rachael Starkman, and of course, Ted and Phyllis Kosloff, honorary ad journal chairpersons. A very big yasher koach goes to Rav Yoel Dovid Zeffren and Rav Yosef Prupas for all that they did to make this dinner a success.

We are so fortunate to have a Kollel such as this in our community. This has been another great year for the Kollel and the entire community of growth in Torah. After many years of learning halachos of Yoreh Deah, the Kollel has embarked on a three-year journey to learn hilchos Shabbos. Also, the Kollel rabbis have just completed Mesechta Beitzah, which is the 10th mesechtah to be completed in our short history, and just began Mesechta Moed Kattan.

This was an especially exciting year as we saw the addition of five new families to the Kollel and to our community. Rabbi Dov and Mrs. Sima Greer joined, he to be Rosh Chabura of our second seder, and she to add new resources and focus to women’s programming. Plus the Beis Medrash has benefited tremendously from the addition

of four new yungeleit: Rabbi Yisroel Yitzchak and Penina Akerman, Rabbi Eliyahu and Bracha Breiner, Rabbi Yedidya and Chanie Kaganoff, and Rabbi Moshe Yosef and Miriam Beila Speigel.

New community learning programs at the initiative of Rabbi Yosef Prupas in his position as Director of Community Programming continue to emerge. The Kollel is unique for its ability to bring together families from across the breadth of our community. Masmid, Kesher, Doctor Chabura, Lawyer Chabura,  Hilchos Shabbos  (borer) shiur, Sunday morning Hilchos Ribbis shiur, are just a few of our ongoing programs. In addition to that, the Kollel manages to bring in quality speakers for men and women.

Representing the Board, I’d like to acknowledge and thank the Kollel  rebbeim and staff for their dedication and unending efforts on behalf of the Kollel and the community. Much appreciation goes to the Rosh Kollel, Rav Yechiel Biberfeld and Mrs. Biberfeld, the Assistant Rosh Kollel, Rav Yoel Dovid Zeffren and Mrs. Zeffren, and Director of Community Programming, Rav Yosef Prupas and Mrs. Prupas. Thank you also to the yungeleit and their wives for their learning and teaching and all of their efforts on behalf of the Kollel. Thank you to our board members for their time and guidance. Finally, thank you to the Rabbis of our community shuls and schools, and to Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, shlit”a and the Roshei Yeshiva and rebbeim  of the Philadelphia Yeshiva for supporting the Kollel.

Born in Kiev, Ukraine in the 1960’s, the Pendraks immigrated to the United States in the 1970’s, where Israil and Inna both attended Temple University, majoring in chemistry. After completing his graduate studies, Israil began working for GlaxoSmithKline, where he is still employed as a medicinal chemist. Inna, after graduating from Temple and PCOM, practiced family medicine for 10 years before transitioning to the pharmaceutical industry 15 years ago.

The Pendraks were married in the 1980’s, but it wasn’t until 2003 that Israil and Inna began their journey to Torah observance. In 2008 they moved to Lower Merion and immediately became involved with the Kollel. Israil has a daily seder at 5:30 a.m. with Rabbi Bauminger, in addition to the other learning he does at the

Kollel. They have four children: Karen and Yitzchak Kraftmann who live in the community with their children, Aaron and Aliza; Avraham Dovid; Yaakov Asher, married to Chana Baysa; and Michelle, a junior at KTA. The boys can be found davening and learning in the Kollel Beis Medrash whenever they are home.

In their words: “The Kollel yungeleit are role models for our family of how to live a Torah-true life. Their children reflect their Torah upbringing and enhance our schools. Their wives are great examples for our daughters. Not a day goes by that ‘the Kollel’ is not mentioned and visited at least a few times. The Kollel is our connection to Torah in this community.” It gives us great pleasure to honor such an exemplary and worthy couple at this year’s dinner.

The Philadelphia Community Kollelis proud to pay tribute to our

Guests of HonorDrs. Israil and Inna Pendrak

Who determinedly seek the Truth of Torah and pursue the knowledge of Hashem. They set an

example for all as Jews who remain focused on growth in every phase of their lives.

May their efforts to dig deeply for Hashem’s treasures pay off in a wealth of spiritual riches for

themselves, their children and grandchildren.

After spending his youth in Bala Cynwyd, R’ Ari and his family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland where eventually he met Netanya, a Silver Spring native, and they married in December of 2000. In 2006 the Silvers moved back to Bala Cynwyd for Rabbi Silver to take a position as a rebbi at Torah Academy, and he is now in his 10th year of teaching 5th and 6th grade boys. He is a very effective and beloved rebbi to hundreds of students. Rabbi Silver is also the Youth Director at LMS and heads Torah Youth/Pirchei on Shabbos afternoons, and he and his wife are involved in many other community institutions. R’ Ari has been learning in the Kollel’s Mechanchim Kollel in the evenings, while Mrs. Netanya Silver recently joined the Kollel staff as office manager. They have 5 wonderful children: Moshe Tzvi (13), Avraham Chaim (11), Shayna Basya (9), Shira Miriam (7), Gedaliah (5), and Dina Leah (3).

In their words: “We love how the Kollel works to include everyone in the community, the diverse programs for men, women and children. We love that there is an established place that is always full of people learning Torah and that is open to everyone to join.  For years, every time we would pass by the Kollel, the boys would say, ‘That is the Masmid place.’ The girls anxiously look forward to each Kesher program, and Netanya cherishes the set time and opportunity to focus on spending quality learning time with them. Rabbi Silver attests, ‘Since moving to Bala Cynwyd I have been fortunate to consistently have a night-seder chavrusa. To be able to set aside an hour every evening for personal learning in an environment of Torah study is invaluable.’”
