Chapter Dues and Annual Report of the Chapter Treasurer Deadlines Nearing

June and July are busy months for chapter treasurers. They are collecting dues now, keeping their presidents informed of who has not paid, and helping contact ones who still need to make a payment. The deadline for submitting members’ dues to the chapter is June 30.

Payments from the chapter level to the state are due July 15. The electronic dues process, initiated last year, remains in effect, and chapter treasurers are encouraged to refresh their memories of the process using the documents under their MyDKG profiles or the NC DKG Treasurer Tips website before clicking the Pay Dues button.

Chapter presidents, both outgoing and incoming, are encouraged to assist treasurers in getting all dues collected by June 30. Realizing Covid-19 might play a role in seeing members and getting payments collected, some flexibility is extended. Contact NC DKG Treasurer Leslie Black with questions.

Presidents Take Note: Incoming presidents, you will be able to see the same PowerPoints and PDF help files as treasurers after July 1. They will appear under the Chapter Connect tab of your MyDKG profile. Support your treasurer by helping contact members who have not paid and being aware of all that she is tasked to do.

Presidents Take Note: Thank you to all who com-pleted Form 110 and the NC DKG Google form for report-ing new officers! Only a

handful of chapters remain and we hope to hear from them when they have new officers in place!

EEC Equals Well-Defined Programs

Summertime = Funtime By: Tobey Worthington, NC DKG First Vice-President

As schools close their doors for summertime (even virtual ones!), NC DKG welcomes new chapter officers. If you are taking on a leadership role in your chapter, now is a good time to browse the NC DKG website as well as International’s (remember to log in). Have some fun scanning the various ideas and resources that are available to you. This will help you Create some well-defined programs that will Empower and Engage your members. You will be Ready and Set to GROW during your biennium.

Freshness Self-Check— Stale and Dry Or Fresh and Growing? Did you use the Three S’s to surround, structure and see obstacles as opportunities for growth? Are you using opportunities to prevent stagnation and stimulate growth? Let me share with you examples of chapters and/or members that took to heart the quote from last month, “You’ve got to continue to grow or you’re just like last night’s cornbread, stale and dry!”

See Gamma Delta GROW! Implemented strategies to stay connected Maintaining fellowship and protecting Generations of members

See Alpha Phi GROW! Incoming Executive Committee developing a Research instrument to update bios, seek input and develop committees

See Gamma Psi GROW! Tonya Smith and Dr. Myra Cox Recognized for fulfilling Opportunities for Leadership

See Beta Delta GROW! Book talk on Born a Crime in a Zoom meeting Kelly Arnold White hosted a Well-defined program

I read this recently in a Beta Kappa newsletter: “If you are one of those people who has that little voice in the back of her mind saying, ‘Maybe I could do [fill in the blank],’ don’t tell it to be quiet. Give it a little room to grow, and try to find it an environment it can grow in.” Reese Witherspoon

Question to ponder as we transition into a new chapter biennium: What is your little voice telling you that you can do? What environment is needed to foster its growth?

State Perspective and Connections

With President Dr. Teresa H. Cowan NC DKG President

Parliamentary True or False?

The chairperson cannot vote on motions.

False. There are two situations where the chairperson can vote. (1) If the vote is by ballot and (2) if the vote is counted and there is a tie in a majority vote or her vote affects the 2/3 vote.

Canceled vs cancelled?

Confused about the spelling for the past tense of cancel? We have been too! Most dictionaries say both spellings are acceptable! NC DKG has chosen to use cancelled with two l’s since the word cancellation always has two and using one in canceled and two in cancellation looks inconsistent. We hope things are settling down and noth-ing else will be cancelled so we don’t need to use it any time soon!

New Leader Trainings

New Leader Trainings for incoming chapter presi-dents, EEC chairs, membership chairs and regional di-

rectors have tentatively been set for July 27 and 28, either in Asheboro or as a virtual event. Invitation to which day will depend on region, based on past attend-ance data.

Treasurers will be trained virtually on an as-needed basis since many of them are repeating in their positions.

Watch for an email invitation and details on the NC DKG website once plans are finalized.

Eta Data: Your Monthly Newsletter

Eta Data is a monthly electronic publication from the leadership of NC DKG to keep members informed about events, deadlines, and updates. It is geared to chapter presidents so they are knowledgeable about what is happening on the state and international levels and to chapter newsletter editors so they have easy access to state and international news for their newsletters. The gavel and pencil graphics are used to call attention to items of particular interest to each group. “Presidents Take Note:” is used to highlight an action needed or items of specific interest mainly to presidents, to help foster your leadership and make your role easier.

“Hints to Editors:” marks an article, idea or news of particular interest to all members that hopefully editors will find room to include in their newsletters. Editors are free to copy and paste any item from Eta Data into their newsletters without crediting the source. Our goal is to make including news from the state and international levels easy for you so your chapter members are kept informed and feel a part of

the larger Society. While chapters are free to forward Eta Data to individual chapter mem-bers, it is not written with that in mind. It is not general information for all members. That is the purpose of NC DKG News, the quarterly state newsletter that does go to all members and includes more chapter and individual member news. Eta Data is published on the 15th of every month and is posted on the News -> Publications page of the NC DKG website. Back issues for one year are also available on the link. An email is sent to state leaders, chap-ter presidents, and chapter editors when the new issue is posted. Please respond to that email so that the editor knows the email reaches you and that you are able to open the link. Please send any email changes to Eta Data Editor Susan Kuenzel at [email protected].

We hope you find Eta Data helpful! Welcome!

NC DKG News Chapter and Member Submission Guidelines

NC DKG News is published in electronic form four times a year and targets every DKG member in NC. It is posted on the state website and links are emailed to presidents and editors, who are asked to share it with every chap-ter member, either electronically or printed.

Editor Carol Bostian ([email protected]) invites chapter presidents and editors to submit news following these guidelines:

• Chapter articles - 125-150 words maximum.

• Member recognition articles - 75-100 words maximum.

• If you have longer articles, send a synopsis for the NC DKG News. Publish the full article on the chapter website and a link to that article can be included in the newsletter.

• Photos - submit photos as an attachment to an email message, not past-ed into a Word document.

Submission deadlines are August 1, Fall issue; November 1, Winter issue; February 1, Spring issue; and May 1, Summer issue.

Many thanks to outgoing regional directors: Rhonda Allen, Veda McNair, Terry Denny, Star Jackson, Molly Upchurch, Pamela Wright, Peggy Stuart, Nancy Smith, Becky Keesler, Dr. Sherry Willis, and Patti Higgins.

How Does Your Membership ?

Chapters must not be caught unaware! It is obvious that we may see significant loss of members due to our current situation. Members may have different teach-ing responsibilities; home life could be affected monetarily with child care; job loss and reeval- uating priorities are possible. It is crucial to acknowledge the new “normal” and see these situa-tions as opportunities to “think outside the box” and demonstrate flexibility with membership recruitment and retention.

Collegial Exchange Submissions

Your mind is racing with all that you did this year with virtual school sessions and how your students reacted. Put your thoughts onto paper and share them in an arti-cle to the DKG Bulletin: Collegial Exchange. The deadline is August 1, 2020.

Collegial Exchange is a print publication with no desig-nated theme. Ideas for topics include a viewpoint piece, DKG or classroom practice or program, poetry, or crea-tive works.

Submit articles to [email protected]. Click here for sub-mission guidelines on the DKG website once logged in.

Preparations Underway for Virtual Event in July

For health and safety reasons, DKG members will not meet in Philadelphia for an in-person convention this summer, so plans are shifting to a virtual platform. Inter-national President Cathy Daugherty and the Headquar-ters staff are working hard to prepare for the first virtual event July 7-10, 2020!

Plans for the virtual event include presentations by both keynote speakers Olympia LePoint and Jane Golden and by Whitney Simon, UNICEF US Fund representative. The Forum event is “Embracing Diversity“ with Greg DeShields and Nita Scott. There will also be 13 work-shops, talks on our five core values, an interview with the author of Our Heritage IV and more. Installation of newly elected officers and the new International President’s speech will close the event. It is free to attend!

Get excited for the event by reading President Cathy’s blog post! She anticipates a fun and memorable occasion.

NC DKG Input into Election of Officers

President Teresa has asked for members’ input into voting for new officers via the DKG International Officer Election form. There have been some nominations from the floor since she initially posted the form. Those have been added to the current form at https://forms.gle/huLK8qb6g3L6w2Mw8. Please stress to vote before June 19 when President Teresa needs to cast NC DKG’s ballot.

Hints to Editors: All the information on this page needs to be shared! Copy and paste as you want. Members need to know!

Beware of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams have become bolder and more sophisti-cated but they still have one aim—scam the recipient out of money or personal information to take your money!

Several emails currently circulating purport to be from state or international leaders, including President Teresa and President Cathy. Be assured they will not send you an email asking for gift cards or your Amazon account.

One recent email hitting NC DKG chapters included a letter from the president to the treasurer asking her to urgently send a payment of $3,850.00 to a vendor. The email address was not the president’s email even though it was her name, so close inspection was needed.

A few recent blog posts by the International Communica-tions and Marketing Committee address phishing and

include tips on how to avoid being taken in by scammers. Read them at http://dkgsi.blogspot.com/search/label/Communications%20and%20Marketing%
