Volume 18 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 9, 2018

Our Tradition:

Feasts for the Week of September 12-15 Wednesday, September 12. The Most Holy Name of Mary Our Salvation begins when the archangel speaks the name of Mary. To be a Christian is to carry on that Annunciation unceasingly. St. Louis Grignion de Monfort wrote that “the salvation of each individual is bound up with the Hail Mary.” This prayer which names the holy name of the Mother of God ‘brought to a dry and barren world, the Fruit of Life. It will cause the Word of God to take root in the soul and bring forth Jesus. The holy name of Mary bears such power because of the unique bond between Mother and Son. When God sent his Son born of a woman, he instituted a once for all order of salvation in which the union of Mother and Child stands at the center. To accept the divine privilege of speaking the name of Mary is to participate in that saving union” (Magnificat, September 2018). Thursday, September 13. St. John Chrysostom St. John was ordained a priest in 386 and was given the task of preaching to the Christian community. His sermons were deemed as so excellent that he earned the title of Christostom which is translated as “Golden Mouth.” He is honored as one of the Doctors of the Church. His devotion to the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist earned him the honor of Doctor of the Eucharist. Here is a sam‐pling of some of his profound utterances. “Let no one mourn he has fallen again and again; for for‐giveness has risen from the dead. . . . “If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the chalice.” Friday, September 14. The Exaltation of the Holy Cross St. John Damascene beautifully describes the importance of the cross in a Christian’s life. “The Cross is a shield against the devil as well as a trophy of victory. It is the promise that we will not be overcome by the Angel of Death (Ex. 9:12). The Cross is God’s instrument to lift up those who have fallen and to support those still on their feet fighting. It is a crutch for the crippled and a guide for the wayward. It is our constant goal as we advance, the very wellspring of our body and soul. It drives away all evils, annihilates sin and draws down for us abundant goods. This is indeed the seed of the Resurrection and the tree of eternal life.” Saturday, September 15. Our Lady of Sorrows Jesus wanted to associate his Mother with the work of redemption and make her a participant in his supreme sacrifice. As we celebrate the co‐redemptive suffering of Mary, the Church invites us to offer our many little difficulties for the salvation of souls. Through union with the Lord’s work of redemption Mary underwent the torments of any good mother who sees her son in the throes of death, but in addition her pain had the salvific quality of Christ’s own Passion, she who is full of grace and the purest handmaid of the Lord offers up all of her actions in intimate union with her Son (In Conversation with God, Vol. 7).

SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Meditation Monday : Luke 6:6-11 Stretch out your hand. (Luke 6:10)

Critics play an important role in the music world. They help the public to evaluate what is good, and by doing so, they set standards for music. But critics can also be closed to anything new or different. For example, one of Bach’s students called his music “turgid and confused.” A contemporary of Mozart called his music “overloaded and overstuffed.” One critic said of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony: “It was hard to figure out what all the noise was about.” You could say that some Pharisees of Jesus’ day had become like those critics. In their zeal to preserve the Law, they had attached their own limited expectations to it. One of those limitations was that they taught that curing the sick was forbidden on the Sabbath—unless the sick person was in danger of death. The man whom Jesus healed in the synagogue had only a withered hand, so that clearly didn’t qualify. These Pharisees weren’t willing to admit that God could go beyond their assumptions of what the Law was all about. This attitude can affect us as well. We can view our own assumptions about God as being the only thing that matters, and end up limiting him as a result. But our heavenly Father wants to take us beyond our expectations, both of who he is and of who we can become. He is not interested in healing you just enough so that you can squeak your way into heaven. He is a generous Father. He wants to fill you with so much grace that you dance through his gates joyfully, bringing countless people behind you whose lives you have touched! Do you think it’s possible that you can know the Lord even more deeply than you do right now? Do you think it’s possible that you might be able to pray with someone and see them healed? Don’t be like those music critics with their limited expectations! God has great plans for you. So go ahead and stretch out your hand in faith and see how God fills you with his life, his love, and his power.

“Lord, open my eyes. Help me to see how much you have blessed me in the past,

so that I can be open to receive your grace in the future.”

Be slow to judge and quick to Love

It’s not easy to always feel love for our fellow humans. Even minor but annoying incidents can get in the way such as getting cut off in traffic, stuck behind an older couple taking their time, delayed by a disinterested, tattooed cashier who can’t make change, or hassled by a homeless man panhandling.

Instead of giving in to frustration, try opening your heart. The person who cut you off in traffic might be a single mom rushing home after working a full day to spend a few precious minutes with her children. The tattooed, disinterested cashier may be a college student struggling with exams and worried about getting student loans for next semester. The older, meandering couple may be savoring this moment together knowing that there will not be many more of them. The panhandling homeless man may be a slave to addictions we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Instead of getting steamed over every-day annoyances, offer love.

“For the measure you give will be the measure you get back”

(Luke 6:37)
