Welcome to the DIVINE HEALING CLASS. You have accepted the challenge of broadening your wisdom, knowledge, understanding, skills, and abilities to properly learn that physical healing has been provided for us in the redemptive work of Christ, to discover God’s will in respect to healing “all”, to look at God’s methods of healing, and to discover hindrances to healing. Jesus healed all who came to Him. It was a sign of God’s love and compassion as well as a sign, which drew people to repentance and recognition of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. Miracles continue today for the same purposes. This course will acquaint the student with knowledge of how to move in the miraculous. We will discuss many areas from the Old Covenant Promise to Methods of Receiving and Ministering Healing. By the end of this course, you will have a Kingdom consciousness to effectively take authority in the gift of healing. This hands-on course of study is aimed to assist you “in becoming strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” so you can share with others how to gain the victory through ministering the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Fear will arise. Take heart and remain prayerful always as we delve into the core of the Healing Ministry. Be prepared for an attack of the enemy who will seek to distract you from your purpose and goal, as being to overcome, conqueror, be a warrior and winner in Christ. I look forward to sharing what the Lord has given me to enlighten you. Let us go through the process, go beyond ourselves, and tap into the heart of God. Remember, this is for your spiritual advantage and the end result is that you will be empowered. I am praying for you and with you as you go through this course of study and go forth to becoming an effective witness for Christ. Again, welcome and enjoy!

DIVINE HEALING

INTRODUCTION: If the Bible reveals a history of God healing people supernaturally under the old covenant, and Jesus and His disciples healing people supernaturally under the new covenant, then we must examine all scriptural claims providing healing and how to receive healing, as well as every hindrance to healing. I. How to begin in faith.

Since faith begins where the will of God is known, we must establish the will of God concerning healing in Scripture. Then confident faith can be exercised.

A. “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in

my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and truth shall make you free.”

- John 8:31,32

B. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” - Romans 10:17

“It is impossible to boldly claim by faith a blessing which we are not sure God offers, because the blessings of God can be claimed only where the will of God is known, trusted, and acted upon.” – T. L. Osburn

C. God answers the prayer of faith based on His promises.

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”

- I John 5:14,15 II. How to learn God’s will.

A. Scripture

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

- II Timothy 3:16,17

Page 6: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

6

1. Doctrine: instruction 2. Reproof; evidentiary proof (conviction) 3. Correction; a straightening up again 4. Instruction; training 5. Righteousness: self-evident righteous, equitableness

B. The Holy Spirit

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

- John 14:26 C. Ministry Gifts

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come into the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the statue of the fullness of Christ:”

- Ephesians 4:11-13 III. The New (Better) Covenant

Scriptures in the New Covenant that fulfill Old Testament prophecies or have some other direct correlation to the Old Testament are promises of the ‘better covenant.”

“But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.”

- Hebrews 8:6 IV. Jesus came to do God’s will. The Gospels and Epistles show the will and testament of God.

“Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me0, to do thy will, O God.”

- Hebrews 10:7

“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”

- John 6:38

Page 7: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

7

V. Jesus is the express image of God.

“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

- II Corinthians 4:4 “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.”

- Colossians 1:15

“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

- Hebrews 1:3

“Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not know me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.”

- John 14:8-11 VI. Jesus is the Word of God and God’s manifested presence into the created

universe. A. He is the eternal Word of God.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.”

- John 1:1,2 B. He created the universe.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darketh; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

- John 1:3-5

Page 8: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

8

C. He came to earth as a human.

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

- John 1:14

D. He has always been the means (the manifest presence) by which God deals with His created universe and His created man.

“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

- John 1:17,18 VII. Jesus demonstrated God’s will to heal all.

“When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.’

- Matthew 8:16,17

“But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all.”

- Matthew 12:15

“And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.”

- Matthew 14:36

“And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.”

- Luke 6:19

A. Jesus demonstrated God’s will to heal when His ability is not questioned, but His willingness is.

“When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.”

- Matthew 8:1-3

Page 9: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

9

“And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make make me clean. And Jesus moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will, be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.”

- Mark 1:40-43

“And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.”

- Luke 5:12-15

B. God demonstrated His will to save, even though all don’t receive. Healing is no different than salvation – both are available to all.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

- II Peter 3:9

C. Jesus forgave sins and healed – Luke 5:16-26, Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12.

VIII. Jesus fulfilled Old Covenant promises as the Messiah and demonstrated the

inclusion of healing with salvation. A. Old Covenant Promise

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

- Isaiah 53:3-5

Page 10: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

10

1. Grief – Also translated sickness or disease 2. Sorrows – Also translated pains 3. Wounded – Means pierced through 4. Transgression – Sins of revolt (referring to man’s sin nature) 5. Bruised – Crushed 6. Iniquities – Sins of perversion (referring to our individual sins) 7. Peace – (Shalom) Absolute peace as when all spiritual, physical,

and emotional needs have been met. 8. Stripes – Bruises – These were both physical and spiritual. The

spiritual stripes were put on Jesus by God the Father (see v. 10) and correspond to the spiritual death (separation from God) that Jesus experienced according to v.9 where the word “death”

B. The New Testament Fulfillment 1. Jesus took away the root cause of sickness.

“That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses.”

- Matthew 8:17

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”

- I Peter 2:24

(Note: Peter quotes from Isaiah, but changes the tense from “are” to “were,” thus identifying the dispensation after the cross.)

2. Some have said that this healing refers to spiritual healing.

However, our spirits are not healed, they are recreated.

a. We are new creations.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

- I Corinthians 5:17 b. We have a new covenant.

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah.”

- Jeremiah 31:31

Page 11: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

11

c. We have new (re-created) spirits.

“And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you: and I will take the story heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh.”

- Ezekiel 11:9 IX. Jesus came to do works opposite of the devil’s works and ultimately destroy

the devil’s works. This signifies the devil as the source of all sickness and disease.

A. Jesus was anointed to do the work.

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”

- Acts 10:38 B. He revealed satanic bondage (sickness).

“And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?

- Luke 13:16 C. He contrasted the source of Life and Death.

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

- John 10:10 D. He came to destroy Satan’s work.

“He that commiteth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

- John 3:8 E. He came to correct doctrine concerning the source of sickness.

“And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is

Page 12: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

12

day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of spittle, and he appointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And he said unto him, Go, was in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way, therefore, and washed, and came seeing.”

- John 9:1-7

There is no punctuation in the Greek, and verses 3, 4 would probably be best punctuated as follows and better fit the whole counsel of God’s Word:

Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents. But that the works of God should be made manifest in him, I must work the works of him that sent me, while it day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

X. While following the ministry of Jesus, people came to hear and be healed.

“But so much went there a fame abroad of Him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.”

- Luke 5:15

“And He came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of His disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear Him, and to be healed of their diseases.”

- Luke 6:17

A. As Jesus taught from the Old Covenant, the people gained faith from hearing the teaching and received healing.

B. The following are passages that Jesus may have taught from.

“And he cried unto the Lord; and the Lord shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in His sight, and wilt give ear to His commandments, and keep all his statues, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

- Ephesians 15:25,26

Page 13: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

13

The word “put” is better translated as “permitted.” “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.”

- Psalm 103:2,3 The word “benefits” means “treatment” in verse 2. Healing is directly tied to the forgiveness of sins in verse 3. “My son, forget not my law, but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.”

- Proverbs 3:1,2 “Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.”

- Proverbs 3:16 “My son, attend to my words: incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

- Proverbs 4:20-23

“For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.”

- Proverbs 9:11

“The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.”

- Proverbs 10:27

“Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”

- Deuteronomy 5:16

The New Testament fulfillment is in Ephesians 6:1

“And that ye may prolong your days in the land, which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed, a land that floweth with milk and honey.”

“That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.”

- Deuteronomy 11:9,21

Page 14: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

14

Psalm 91 – Written by Moses in the wilderness. It is a psalm of Jesus to His church by prophecy through Moses.

Verse one:

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

“Dwelleth” means to stake a claim and posses, as in land settlements. Stake a claim under the shadow of the Almigthy. (This verse was written in second person.)

Verse two:

“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.”

(This verse was written in first person.) Verse three:

“Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”

The snare of the fowler is the trap of the predator, or Satan. A noisome pestilence is a perilous, rushing calamity. (Verses 3-8 were written in second person.)

Verse four:

“He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”

“Covered with His feathers” refers to angelic protection or protection like a mother hen. A shield provides protection from one side, a buckler provides protection roundabout, from all sides.

Verse five:

“Thou shall not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;”

“Terror by night” refers to dreams or imagined harm. An “arrow that flieth by day” is a real threat of harm.

Page 15: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

15

Verse six:

“Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.” “Pestilence that walketh in darkness” are night attacks. “Destruction that wasteth at noon day” are day attacks.

Verse seven:

“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”

No matter what happens to others, it does not have to happen to you! Verse eight:

“Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”

Your eyes shall eventually see every sin and rebellion reap a negative reward.

Verse nine:

“Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;”

(This is written in second person, then first person in the middle, then second person again.)

Verse ten:

“There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.”

No sickness or evil is able to get near you. Verse eleven:

“For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”

Angelic protection, as also possibly referred to in verse four. Verse twelve:

Page 16: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

16

“They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.”

We are protected even from harm. (Satan quotes these two verses when he was tempting Jesus in the wilderness, but he failed to mention verse thirteen. (See Luke 4:9-11.)

Verse thirteen:

“Thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under thy feet.”

“Lion, adder, young lion and dragon all refer to aspects of Satan’s power that Jesus trampled underfoot, or defeated.” (See Luke 10:17-19.)

Verse fourteen:

“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.”

(This verse changes to first person and identifies the one speaking – Jesus, the Word of God, the second person of the Godhead as He represents God the Father.)

We are “delivered and set on high” or exalted because we know Him by name.

Verse fifteen:

“He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.”

Jesus answers our prayer for deliverance and provision. Verse sixteen: “With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.”

This means satisfied with long life, up to perhaps 120 years, and shown God’s salvation purchased by Jesus in its fullest sense and measure.

The length of your days is promised in Deuteronomy 30:20, “He is thy life and the length of thy days.”

The full number of your days is promised in Exodus 23:26 – “The number of thy days I will fulfil.”

Page 17: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

17

Some say that we are promised only 70 to 80 years as identified by Moses in Psalm 90:10, but Moses lived to be 120 years old (Deuteronomy 34:7) as spoken of in Genesis 6:3.

C. When Jesus taught, He had to change the way people thought about

God. 1. God’s thoughts are not the same as the wicked man’s thoughts.

“Seek the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth from out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees o the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off. Thus saith the Lord, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.”

- Isaiah 55:6-13, 56:1

2. God’s thoughts come with the new covenant – they are now written on our hearts.

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant hey brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be he covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts, and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

- Jeremiah 31:31-33

Page 18: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

18

3. We have the mind of Christ.

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

- I Corinthians 2:16

“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world.”

- I John 4:17 LAYING DOUBT TO REST Many times Christians have doubts concerning healing because they have a long list of unanswered questions which, unfortunately, have come from erroneous teaching of God’s Word. We will take a close look at the most common of these questions and discover what the Bible really has to say. As we see that – without exception – it is always God’s will to heal, our doubts in this matter will finally be put to rest, and we will be able to receive healing from the Lord. I. What about Job?

A. Background on Job: Job was a contemporary of Abraham, one of the wealthiest men in the Bible.

B. Fear open the door: Though Job had done no sin, for the law

concerning sin had not yet been given to man, Job exhibited compulsive fear.

“For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.”

- Job 3:25

“As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.”

- Proverbs 26:2

C. Job goes through the anguish of human reasoning with his limited understanding.

Page 19: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

19

1. Job wants to die.

“Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

“Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!”

- Job 6:8,9 2. Job complains in bitterness.

“Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.”

- Job 7:11 3. Job tries to justify himself.

“Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.”

- Job 13:1 D. Job is condemned by his friends (Job 15:1 – Job 32:1). E. Elihu speaks to God (Job 32:4-9). 1. God is just (Job 34:10-12). 2. God’s true character is revealed (Job 36:1-11). F. God answers Job.

“Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkenth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy lions like a man: for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understand.”

- Job 38:1-4 G. Job repents.

“I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

- Job 42:5,6

Page 20: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

20

H. Healing begins. 1. Repentance – release – forgiveness 2. Then captivity turned

“And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.”

- Job 42:10

3. Job received restoration even beyond his greatest expectation.

II. What about Paul’s thorn?

“And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.”

- 2 Corinthians 12:7 A. What is “a thorn in the flesh?” 1. Moses speaks of them in Numbers 33:55.

“But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.”

- Numbers 33:55 2. Joshua speaks of them in Joshua 23:11-13.

“Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from of this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.”

- Joshua 23:13 3. An angel speaks of them in Judges 2:1-3.

Page 21: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

21

“Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.”

- Judges 2:3

4. David speaks of them in 2 Samuel 23:6

“But the sons of Bellal shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands.”

- 2 Samuel 23:6

B. Thorns here are personalities, not disease. These personalities brought opposition to Israel.

C. In Paul’s case, the personality was a demon spirit who stirred

up the Jews against Paul.

1. The Greek word for “messenger” is angelos, translated 188 times as “angel” and 7 times as “messenger.” Most times, angelos refers to one of God’s messengers, but sometimes it refers to one of the devil’s messengers.

2. This demon spirit was not about to stop Paul. Yet even

with opposition from the devil, God has a plan to make all things work together for good if you are in God’s will and love Him.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

- Romans 8:28

3. The problem or temptation does not come from God.

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Bt let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing, If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”

Page 22: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

22

“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

- James 1:2-5, 12-17 4. Through faith and patience we inherit the promises

(Hebrews 6:12).

D. Paul said the thorn was sent because of the abundance of revelation given to him.

1. Satan comes to steal the Word. Satan wanted Paul

oppressed so that fewer people would hear the gospel.

“The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.”

- Mark 4:14,15

2. God wanted Paul exalted (lifted up) so that more people could hear the Gospel. Humility in the presence of God’s revelation causes one to be exalted. Jesus said this of a publican in Luke 18:

“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

- Luke 18:14 III. What about Paul’s “infirmity” (2 Corinthians 12:5,7)?

A. The Greek word for infirmities here is astheneia {as-then’-i-ah}, which means feebleness, strengthlessness or weakness. It is used 24 times in the New Testament and is most often translated as ‘infirmity” (17 times) or “weakness” (5 times). It is only translated “disease” one time and “sickness” one time.

1. In this sense, infirmity is common to all humans.

Page 23: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

23

2. The Spirit helps us in our infirmities.

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought; but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

- Romans 8:26

a. Here the infirmity is the human condition of not knowing how to pray as we ought to.

B. In Galatians 4:13, Paul mentions his infirmity.

1. Some say Paul’s infirmity was some kind of eye problem or disease, but Paul continued to preach in Galatia after being stoned and left for dead in Lystra which is most likely what he refers to when he says, “infirmity or temptation of the flesh.”

“Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. And my tempation which was in my flesh y despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? For I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.”

- Galatians 4:13-15

C. Paul describes his infirmities of persecution in 2 Corinthians 11:23-30. He was repeatedly whipped, imprisoned, and stoned for the sake of the Gospel.

“Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeying often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, that care of all the

churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? If I must need glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.”

- 2 Corinthians 11:23-30

E. Paul walked in strong anointing and special miracles were wrought through his ministry. How could a man burdened with a painful and disgusting eye disease walk in such a powerful healing ministry?

“And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.”

- Acts 19:11,12

1. Paul was the greatest teacher of all Scripture authors concerning faith in God for fulfilling his covenant promises.

2. It would be highly unlikely for the greatest faith teacher of

all time – excepting Jesus Himself – to be unable to receive healing for his own body. Paul is the man inspired to write:

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

- Romans 10:9,10 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

- Romans 10:17

F. Paul sought the Lord three times to have this demon removed from oppressing his ministry. God said, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9) . Paul feared all of his apostolic work might be in vain. Three hundred years after Paul’s death, every church that he established was still in existence.

Page 25: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

25

G. Paul did not die young. He finished his course.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

- 2 Timothy 4:7 I. What about Timothy’s stomach?

A. In Paul’s travels, he was often accompanied by Luke the physician and was quite familiar with helpful natural and medical remedies.

“Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.”

- I Timothy 5:23

B. Paul was careful to give wise counsel concerning spiritual matters and their application and saw no conflict between faith and common sense. Timothy could be an “example in faith” and also use medicine.

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

- I Timothy 4:12 II. What about Christ’s sufferings and how are we to identify with Christ’s

sufferings.

A. Jesus predicted His suffering on the cross.

1. He would suffer, be rejected, be slain, then be raised on third day (Luke 9:22).

2. He kept the Passover supper before suffering (Luke 22:15).

3. He showed Himself alive after His passion (Acts 1:1-3).

B. His true suffering was separation from God for the short period of

time He was on the cross and before He defeated Satan in hell.

“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

- Matthew 27:46 1. God had to turn his back on Jesus when He became sin.

Page 26: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

26

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

- 2 Corinthians 5:21

2. Only when Jesus became sin could He die physically, for up to that time no mortality could be attached to Him.

C. Which of Christ’s sufferings are we to identify with?

1. Jesus resisted sin with all his might.

“And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove the cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”

- Luke 22:41-44

2. We are also to cease from sin.

“Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no loner should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.”

- 1 Peter 4:1,2

3. We can look to His example when we are weary of standing against sin.

“For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.”

- Hebrews 12:3-4

D. Conclusion: When tempted, resist with the Word, then receive power.

1. Overcome temptation as Jesus did (Luke 4:1-14).

2. The same temptations come to all men – with a way of escape.

Page 27: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

27

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

- Corinthians 10:13

3. We can be of good cheer.

“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

- John 16:33 III. Why doesn’t God eliminate all sickness?

A. One day, God will make a new heaven and a new earth.

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”

- Revelation 21:1-3

B. At that time there will be no more suffering.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

- Revelation 21:4

C. To wipe out all sickness, God would need to wipe out all that had been set in motion concerning our current creation. That would include sending over 5 billion unsaved people to hell, which He is not in a hurry to do because of His mercy.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

- 2 Peter 3:9

Page 28: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

28

IV. Does God promise freedom from accidents?

“There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh they dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dast thy foot against a stone.”

- Psalm 91:10-12 V. What about martyrs? Is there a difference between dying for my faith and

dying from illness or accident?

A. Martyrs have finished their course and run their race, choosing not to be delivered.

1. Paul was in a dilemma. In having seen the glory of heaven, he

delivered to depart this life and go on to be with the Lord, yet for the sake of his spiritual children, he remained on earth until the Lord revealed that he had completed his assignment.

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I will not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”

- Philippians 1:21-24

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

- 2 Timothy 4:7

3. “Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection.”

- Hebrews 11:35

B. It is possible that some Christians have acted foolishly or in arrogance

– rather than true faith – and have died unnecessarily. Some examples are:

1. Entering into dangerous areas without hearing directly from the

Lord that they should go there and that they would be protected. 2. Overloading aircraft beyond their capacities or flying into extreme

weather conditions on the erroneous assumption that God has to over-ride natural laws because they were doing ministry business.

Page 29: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

29

“As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.”

- Proverbs 26:2

C. Whether martyred or dying for missing God’s will and wisdom, it is not our business to judge (even though some have taught that we walk in a higher level of faith today and need not be martyred.)

That which is not revealed to us is known only between God and each one of His ministers.

“The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever.”

- Deuteronomy 29:29 VII. Why do some people get healed and then lose their healing?

Many people get healed through the operation of one of the gifts of the Spirit, but when the symptoms return, if they have not learned personal faith in God’s Word concerning healing, they may give in to the sickness again.

“To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit.”

- 1 Corinthians 12:9 VIII. Does sickness teach, correct, or perfect us?

A. The Holy Spirit is the teacher who will teach you all things.

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

- John 14:26

B. The Holy Spirit will reveal all the truth of God’s Word to correct us and guide us.

“But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things… But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”

- I John 2:20,27

Page 30: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

30

C. We gain the mind of Christ by the Holy Spirit of God, and He will bring us into maturity, teaching us to live by the spiritual man and not the natural man.

“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

- I Corinthians 2:1-16

D. If sickness and disease was a method by which God taught, corrected, or perfected His children, then we would have to accept them as His perfect will. Conversely, any attempt to get healed from sickness or disease would be an attempt to avoid the perfect will of God. Whether one sought healing through doctors and medicine or through faith and ministry, both would be a sin.

No, God wouldn’t use sickness or disease to teach His children any more than a sane, normal man would use sickness or disease to teach his children. Any argument to the contrary would be to accuse God of being more insane than Hitler, for over the history of mankind, God would have killed hundreds of millions of His own children simply because they failed to learn some lesson He was trying to teach them.

CONCLUSION:

God desires to convince you fully that He wants you well, and He is willing to eliminate all of your doubts in His compassionate grace and healing mercy as you meditate on His Word.

“When all your doubts are laid to rest in a grace, then your faith will rise to great heights and your healing and health will spring forth suddenly.”

- Dr. Douglas Wingate METHODS OF RECEIVING AND MINISTERING HEALING There are seven methods by which we may obtain or minister healing. These seven methods often occur in various combinations, but for our study, we will divide them into three basis categories. CATEGORY 1: RECEIVING BY YOUR OWN FAITH (THE HIGHEST LEVEL) Method 1 – The Prayer of Faith

“For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

- Romans 10:17 1. Faith comes by spiritual hearing

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

- Romans 10:17

“Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

- Psalm 107:17-20

Page 32: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

32

2. The pattern under Jesus’ ministry was hearing first, healing after.

“But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.”

- Luke 5:15

“And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.”

- Luke 6:17,18 Method 2 – Prayer to the Father in Jesus’ Name

“And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”

- John 16:23 Miracles signs and wonders given

“Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.”

- Acts 14:3 “And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.”

- Acts 19:11-12 Method 3 – The Prayer of Agreement

“Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.”

- Matthew 18:19

Page 33: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

33

CATEGORY 2 – MINISTERING TO OTHERS Method 4 – Gifts and Healings (Sacred endowments)

“To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.”

- I Corinthians 12:9

“After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the Sabbath.”

- John 5:1-9 Method 5 – The Use of the Name of Jesus in Authority and Working of Miracles

“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”

- John 14:13,14

Page 34: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

34

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”

- Matthew 28:18-20

“Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.

And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.

Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.

And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God: And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.

And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon’s, greatly wondering. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?

The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

Page 35: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

35

And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.”

- Acts 3:1-16

A. We gain faith in Jesus’ Name by looking at all that is behind His Name.

B. The power behind His Name. 1. He obtained a more excellent name.

“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.”

- Hebrews 1:1-6

2. He has preeminence (first place).

“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for hi: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

Page 36: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

36

– Colossians 1:13-18 3. He is begotten of God by resurrection.

“God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.”

- Acts 13:33

4. He has a new name.

“Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.”

- Revelation 3:12 5. He gives us a new name.

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.”

- Revelation 2:17 6. The name of Jesus is above all names.

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knew should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

- Philippians 2:9-11

“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.”

- I Corinthians 2:6 (NKJV) Moffat’s translation says:

Page 37: Divine Healing Course Syllabus

Not the wisdom of this world or of the dethroned powers who rule this world.

The Wuest translation says:

Who are in the process of being liquidated.

7. Don’t underestimate the good that you are doing in His

name. Continue to grow in the authority you use in His Name.

Method 6 – Anointing with Oil

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”
