Senior guard Amanda Jackson led the RedHawks with 22 points, while fellow senior Laura Markwood finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. The 14th-seeded RedHawks fell to the third-seeded Louisville Cardinals, 67-81.

JACKSON NAMED HONORABLE MENTION FOR STATE FARM 2008 COACHES’ ALL-AMERICA TEAM: Senior guard Amanda Jackson had a record senior season for Miami and she was named honorable mention for the State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team by the WBCA. Jackson, who averaged 21.6 ppg in 2007-08, was one of 52 players selected as a regional finalist and was one of 40 players selected as finalists. The only Miami women’s basketball player to be selected as an All-American was Linda Mallender, who was a third-team women’s basketball news All-American in 1983.

COACHES AWARD: Head Coach Maria Fantana-rosa was honored by her peers for her team’s performance at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season. The Columbus Dispatch named her the 2008 Ohio Coach of the Year. The voters in the poll were all the collegiate women’s basketball coaches at Ohio schools.

SENIOR MAKES HER MARK: With her eight re-bounds against No. 21 Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, senior forward Laura Markwood surpassed Toledo’s Angela Drake as the Mid-American Conference’s single season rebounding leader. Markwood finished the sea-son with 359 rebounds, six more rebounds than Drake, and she averaged 10.6 rpg, which ranked seventh nationally. Markwood broke Miami’s single season rebounding record by 74 rebounds, and her 359 rebounds are just 49 rebounds shy of her total rebounds during her first three seasons at Miami.

REDHAWK TURNAROUND: The RedHawks put together a terrific 2007-08 season, which resulted in the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tourna-ment, Miami recorded a 23-11 record and a 12-4 record in the Mid-American Conference. The 23 wins are three more wins than the past two seasons combined (eight in 2006 and 12 in 2007), and the 12 conference victories are also three more than the past two MAC slates combined (three in 2006 and six in 2007).

MAC CHAMPIONS: Miami earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 67-56 win over Ohio in the Mid-American Conference Champi-onship game on March 15. The game marked Miami’s first MAC Championship game since the 1994-95 season when the RedHawks lost to Toledo in overtime. It was Head Coach Maria

Fantanarosa’s first trip to the MAC Champion-ship game.

REDHAWK TRIVIA: Miami’s MAC Champion-ship win over Ohio marked the fourth time in Mid-American Conference history that a team went from a losing record one year to winning the MAC Championship the next season. Central Michigan won the 1983 MAC Tournament after going 11-18 in 1982, Ohio won the 1986 MAC Championship after going 11-16 in 1985 and Eastern Michigan won the 2004 MAC Champion-ship after going 13-16 in 2003. Miami posted a 12-18 record last season before winning the title this season.

ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: Following their impressive performances throughout the Mid-American Conference Tournament, junior guard Jenna Schone and senior guard Amanda Jackson were named to the MAC All-Tournament Team. Jackson was also named the MAC Tourna-ment MVP, becoming the first RedHawk player in school history to earn the award. Jackson and Schone also became the second Miami duo to be named to the all-tournament team. Monica Niemann and Jennifer Wenclewicz were named to the all-tournament team in 1995.

RACKING UP THE HARDWARE: Miami’s trio of experienced players earned All-MAC honors this season as each player has put up career numbers. Senior guard Amanda Jackson was a First Team All-MAC selection, her second in a row, after averaging a conference-high 21.6 ppg. Jackson ranked in six statistical categories in conference-only action this season. Junior guard Jenna Schone was a Second-Team All-MAC selection after averaging 13.7 ppg and 5.1 apg this season. Schone ranked nationally in assists, 3-pt. FG per-centage, 3-pt. FG’s made and assist-to-turnover ratio. Finally, senior forward Laura Markwood earned Third-Team All-MAC honors. Markwood led the league in rebounding since the first game of the season and almost averaged a double-double (9.4 ppg; 10.6 rpg).

DYNAMIC DUO: Junior guard Jenna Schone and senior guard Amanda Jackson were the top scoring duo in the MAC, and the eighth leading scoring duo in the country. Schone averaged 13.9 ppg, while Jackson averaged 21.6 ppg.

Miami 23 27 - 50Notre Dame 48 50 - 98

In its opener of the 2007-08 season, Miami University’s women’s basketball team fell to Notre Dame in the opening round of the WNIT, 98-50. The RedHawks were led by junior guard Jenna Schone and sophomore guard Courtney Reed, who had 16 points and 11 points, respectively. The Fighting Irish hit six of their first seven shots out of the gates to take a 12-2 lead over the RedHawks with 16:56 remaining in the first half. Two free throws by senior guard Amanda Jackson kept the RedHawks within 10 points, 14-4, but Miami went scoreless over the next 5:17 and Notre Dame extended its lead to 30-4. Trailing 36-8, a three-point play by senior forward Laura Markwood and five more points by Jackson, including a three-pointer from the left wing, led Miami on a 10-0 run to cut its deficit to 36-18 with 6:03 left to play in the first half. A trey by Reed at the 5:24 mark and two free throws by Markwood with five seconds remaining would be all of the scoring for the rest of the half as the RedHawks trailed, 48-23, entering halftime. Consecutive lay-ups out of the gate by Jackson and Reed followed by a trey from the right wing by Schone, with 18:34 to play in the second half, made the score 30-50 and gave the RedHawks a spark coming out of the half. From that point, the Fighting Irish went on a 21-3 run, giving Notre Dame a 71-33 lead at the 10:58 mark. Down the stretch, the Irish pulled away and the RedHawks dropped its opener, 98-50. Schone led the RedHawks with 16 points and Markwood finished with five points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Miami held its own on the glass and grabbed 24 offensive rebounds in the game.

A 13-0 second-half run and 15 second-half points from junior guard Jenna Schone led Miami University’s women’s basketball team back from a three-point halftime deficit to a 63-54 win over Wright State Wednesday night. A three-pointer by junior guard Jenna Schone gave Miami its first lead of the game, 9-8, with 10:56 to play. Over the next 7:44, the RedHawks only connected on one field goal and the Raiders took advantage by going on a 13-2 run, taking a 21-11 lead with 3:14 to play in the first half. A free throw by sophomore guard Courtney Reed, a lay-up by senior forward Laura Markwood and a three-pointer by senior guard Amanda Jackson sparked a 6-0 run over the next 54 seconds and the RedHawks trailed, 21-17, with just under 2:30 to play in the half. Just before halftime, Hawkins swiped the ball from Wright State and found Jackson streaking down the lane for a lay-up with four seconds left and the RedHawks went into the half down 24-21. Schone put the RedHawks on her shoulders and scored the first nine RedHawk points of the second half leading Miami to a 30-27 lead with 16:50 to play in the second half. Two pull-up jumpers and a lay-up by Jackson and a turn-around jumped by junior forward Stephanie Ford put Miami in front, 51-46, at the 6:45 mark of the second half. Jackson and Ford knocked down a pair of free throws apiece to put Miami up 55-46, with five minutes to play and Miami was able to hang on for the victory. Unable to register a field goal in overtime, the Miami University women’s basketball team fell at IPFW on Saturday afternoon, 79-74. The RedHawks were outscored 7-2 in the extra time after Amanda Jackson, who led MU with 22 points in the contest, fouled out with under a minute remaining in regulation. The RedHawks shot just 32% from the floor while IPFW hit 40% of their shots. Miami did manage to outrebound the Mastodons, 27-23. Laura Markwood had 15 points, while Courtney Reed added 11, and Ashley Hawkins chipped in 10. Stephanie Ford totaled 16 rebounds to lead all players, and scored seven points. IPFW’s Johnna Lewis-Carlisle scored a career-high 28 points to lead all scorers with 23 of her points coming in the second half alone. The teams were knotted at 34-34 after one period of play. Miami had jumped out to a six-point lead after a Jackson triple nine minutes into the game, but the Mastodons clawed their way back into the game and tied the score just before the half on a Chelsey Jackson jumper. A Markwood three-pointer with 6:33 remaining in the second half gave the RedHawks a six-point lead, but a 9-2 IPFW run over the next four minutes kept the game very close. After a Carlisle-Lewis jumper tied the score at 72-72, the teams exchanged turnovers and missed shots to send the game into the extra period. Overtime remained scoreless until a Jordan Zuppe triple gave the Mastodons the lead. Strong defense and a career-high 20 rebounds by senior forward Laura Markwood led Miami to a 64-45 win over Youngstown State. Markwood’s 20 rebounds marked the first time since 1998 that a Miami player grabbed 20 rebounds in a game. Six points by Markwood and a lay-up by senior guard Amanda Jackson led the RedHawks out of the gate and Miami took an 8-2 lead at the 16:35 mark of the first half. The RedHawks kept the pressure on the Penguins and a lay-up from the left block by junior center Stephanie Ford put Miami up 20-8, with 9:31 remaining in the half. Another lay-up by Ford at the 8:54 mark of the half established a 22-11 lead, but that would be the last points the RedHawks scored in the half. During the final 8:54 of the half, the Penguins rattled off 13 straight points, including a lay-up with four seconds left in the half, to take a 24-22 lead into the half. After Youngstown State went up 28-24, the RedHawks went on a 13-2 run and took a 37-30 lead with 13:34 to play in the second half. Soon thereafter, another 12-2 run by Miami expanded the RedHawk lead to 47-34, with 9:55 remaining. Miami executed well down the stretch and a Ford lay-up put Miami up 60-40, its largest lead of the game, and the RedHawks went on to defeat the Penguins, 64-45. Markwood finished with 12 points and 20 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Junior guard Jenna Schone led Miami with 15 points.

MIAMI 28 39 - 67LOUISVILLE 41 40 - 81

In its first NCAA Tournament game in program history, Miami University’s women’s basketball team fought valiantly, but fell to the No. 21 Louisville, 81-67, in the New Orleans Regional Sunday afternoon. Senior guard Amanda Jackson led Miami (23-11; 12-4 MAC) with 22 points, her 20th 20-plus scoring game of the season, while Chauntise Wright led Louisville (25-9) with 21 points. Junior guard Jenna Schone opened up the Miami scoring by putting in five points, including a three-pointer from the left baseline, but the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run to take a 16-5 lead with 13:05 to play in the first half. Another three-pointer by Schone with 8:25 on the clock closed Miami within six points, 24-18, but three straight buckets by Wright expanded the Cardinal lead to 11 points, 30-19, with 5:26 remaining in the half. Five straight points by Jackson kept Miami within 11 points, but two free throws by Louisville’s Angel McCoughtry sent Miami into the half trailing by a score of 41-28. Both teams struggled with turnovers in the first half as Miami had 16 turnovers, but the RedHawks forced Louisville into 17 first-half turnovers. Schone led Miami with eight points at the half, while McCoughtry led Louisville with 16 points. Miami came out of the half and hit four of its eight shots to close within 11 points, 49-38, by the under-16-minute media timeout. From that point, Jackson scored 11 straight points for Miami, but consecutive treys by Louisville’s Brandie Radde kept the Cardinals up by double-digits, 61-49, with 7:56 to play. Louisville went on a 9-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 70-51, but the RedHawks kept fighting and closed within 14 points, 70-56, with 3:42 to play. However, Miami was unable to close within single digits as the RedHawks fell to Louisville, 81-67. Jackson led all scorers with 22 points, 16 of which came in the second half, while senior forward Laura Markwood was the only other RedHawk player in double figures as she scored 13 points. Markwood also grabbed eight rebounds, which gave her 359 rebounds for the season and makes her the Mid-American Conference single-season rebounding leader. Jackson scored 712 points for the season, becoming just the third player in conference history to score over 700 points in a season.
