SIMON BIRCHALLPoet, Teacher and Programme Manager for English
“The team I manage are highly focused and love all of the arts
and especially contemporary literature. We are involved in lots
of creative writing initiatives, including live poetry events and
national poetry day and partnerships which encourage young
writers and help them to get their work heard and eventually
published.”
ANNIE JOHNDrama and Performing Arts Teacher
“Students are taught by artists, actors, choreographers,
writers and musicians. We treat our students as professional
practitioners and offer them an experience as close to working
in the industry as we can. Our students have performed at
venues like Stratford Circus, The Royal Festival Hall, The

ALUMNI STORIES
so I've done non-acting jobs to
keep busy - I've even worked with
Solid Harmony Choir which was fun
because I used to be a member
of the choir when I was back at
NewVIc.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN ACTOR?Firstly, really ask yourself why you
want to go into acting and what you
hope to achieve, it's not an easy
industry to get into and sustain
yourself in, so you really need
something to hold onto during
the hard times. It also might be
that you want to learn skills from
acting to help you do something
else that isn't acting, like being
more confident in interviews or
having better social skills when
meeting new people... or you could
use acting skills as a platform to
lead you into working within the
arts in a different capacity, maybe
as a writer, director, producer,
cinematographer or
movement director
for instance..
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO SINCE LEAVING NEWVIC? Once I left NewVIc I studied drama
at Rose Bruford College and since
graduating I've had plenty of work
as an actor since. I suppose the
more shows I've been in, the more
people in the industry have seen
my work and called me in for my
auditions, and eventually I got an
audition for the Royal Shakespeare
Company.
Sometimes there are long gaps
where I've not done an acting job,
The performance opportunities at NewVIc were highlights of my time, it was always great to have a performance to work towards and
look forward to, and it felt like there was a real performing arts community within NewVIc and we'd all support each other. I also remember having a good time at NewVIc because the people who were there wanted to be there, they picked the subjects they wanted and the people in your classes were like-minded.

FOR YOUR INTEREST3 WAYS THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY IS HELPING CLIMATE CHANGE
Photographer Michel Comte's series ‘Light’ depicts
images of glaciers in Alaska which have been covered
in foil after being contaminated in the Exxon Valdez
disaster, where in 1989 an oil tanker spilled over 37
tonnes of crude oil. It is considered to be one of the
worst human-caused environmental disasters.
Canadian synth-pop musician and visual artist Grimes
explores climate change in her upcoming concept
album, Miss_Anthrop0cene, the “anthropomorphic
goddess of climate change”. In the album, Grimes
personifies climate change in an attempt to make the
concept easier to grasp and empathise with.
Architects and design firms are working together with
scientists to find new ways to design our cities to help
reverse the threat of climate change. The most recent
United Nations report summarised that of an estimated
total of eight million plant and animal species alive
today, one million were at risk of extinction due to
climate change. New projects in development include
the creation of regenerative cities, designed to restore
the natural environment and protect biodiversity whist
allowing for urban development and growth.

ALUMNI STORIES
leaving NewVic, I have graduated
from university with a 2:1 in BSc
Paramedic Science and now
working as a paramedic with East
of England Ambulance Service.
WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES OF NEWVIC?I have made many memories at
NewVIc, memories that will stay
with me forever as they made
me the person who I am today.
Looking back, I had the best time at
NewVIc, I enjoyed going to college,
I enjoyed the classes and I enjoyed
the teachers there as well. I am
glad I went to NewVIc, as I wouldn’t
have made the friends I did and
potentially not be where I am today
without the support I had.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?I'd like to work abroad and also
plan on going back to university to
do my masters in
critical care and
hopefully one day
work as a critical
care paramedic.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO SINCE LEAVING NEWVIC?Before I started at NewVic, I wasn’t
a very out going person, I was the
kind of person that you wouldn’t
know was there in the class as
I kept myself to myself. I had to
start at the bottom as I wasn’t
a very well-behaved pupil at
secondary school and had to re-do
my GCSE’s. I had to start off from
Level 1 and then work myself up
to Level 3, which is when I studied
Level 3 Medical Science. Since

Engineers have recently developed a magnetically steerable, thread-like robot that can actively glide through narrow, winding pathways, such as the narrow vasculature of the brain.
In the future, this robotic thread may be paired with
existing technologies, enabling doctors to remotely
guide the robot through a patient’s brain vessels to
quickly treat blockages and lesions to help patients
with strokes and aneurysms.
Stroke is the fifth biggest cause of death and a
leading cause of disability. If acute stroke can be
treated within the first 90 minutes or so, patients’
survival rates could increase significantly.
To clear blood clots in the brain, doctors often
perform a minimally invasive surgery in which a
surgeon inserts a thin wire through a patient’s main
artery. Guided by a fluoroscope using X-rays, the
surgeon then manually rotates the wire up into the
damaged brain vessel.
This procedure can be physically taxing, requiring
surgeons, who must be specifically trained in the
task, to endure repeated radiation exposure from
fluoroscopy. It’s a demanding skill, and there are
not enough surgeons for the patients.
The development of the robot thread would vastly
improve such procedures, both in the design and
in reducing doctors’ exposure to any associated
radiation.

in engineering and whether women can successfully complete

Today, we have more digital devices than ever before and they have more sensors that capture more data about us.
Last year 70% of companies used social media to
screen job candidates, and 48% checked the social
media activity of current staff. Financial institutions
also check social media profiles when deciding
whether to hand out loans.
Companies are fast creating models of buying
habits, political views and even use artificial
intelligence to gauge habits based on social media
profiles. New methods of surveillance technology
are also being developed.
HOW YOU WALKBehavioural biometrics is based on recognising
individuals from their patterns of movement or
behaviour. One example is gait recognition, which
may well be the next surveillance technology to hit
the mainstream.
HEARTBEAT DETECTIONYour heartbeat and your breathing pattern are as
unique as your fingerprint. A small but growing
number of remote sensing technologies are being
developed to detect vital signs from a distance.
MONITORING INDOOR MOVEMENTSWi-Fi can also be used to locate individuals, identify
their position in the room and whether they're
sitting or standing, and even track vital signs.
THE REGULATION PROBLEMTrying to regulate surveillance technologies is
difficult. Technology is developing too fast for
legislation. There are real benefits from increased
security, such as insights into how people use
public places to help improve them. At the same
time, however the question we need to ask is
whether we want to live in a future society which
constantly watches its citizens

FOR YOUR INTERESTPHILOSOPHERS REVEAL THE SECRET TO HAPPINESS
Results from the UK National Youth Index indicate that young people have never been unhappier. As we constantly search for the secret to happiness in new technologies, perhaps we should actually be looking to the past for answers?
BERTRAND RUSSELL"Of all forms of caution, caution in love is perhaps
the most fatal to true happiness."
It's out of character for someone like Bertrand
Russell, a lover of mathematics, science, and logic,
to dabble in something so negotiable as happiness.
But his idea that happiness can be found in the
surrender to feelings of love rings true.
FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE"Happiness is the feeling that power increases -
that resistance is being overcome."
For Nietzsche, happiness is a kind of control
one has over their surroundings. The German
philosopher wrote frequently on the impacts that
power and lack of power, can have on people's
experiences. When people resist, they take back
their control. That sense of self can then turn into
happiness.
JOHN STUART MILL"I have learned to seek my happiness by limiting my
desires, rather than in attempting to satisfy them."
John Stuart Mill was a titan of liberalism, perhaps
its most important figure in history. He spread
the gospel of liberty wherever he could. When it
came to happiness, he adopted the wisdom of the
ancient Greeks. Instead of inundating his life with
goods, Mill believed in utilitarianism. He believed
in using things for a purpose, and if they served no
purpose, he banished them from his life.
LAO TZU"If you are depressed you are living in the past. If
you are anxious you are living in the future. If you
are at peace you are living in the present."
Translated simply as "Old Man," nobody is quite
sure who Lao Tzu really was. But the figure's
wisdom on living in the moment has transcended
millennia and psychologists uphold its benefits.
Research suggests people report the greatest
happiness when they are engaged in things that
require their full and present attention.

WHICH WAY OF LEARNING SUITS YOU?HANDS ON LEARNING
If you prefer to learn by getting your hands on the latest
equipment and technology, trying out new concepts and
working on real projects, a vocational course may be best
suited for you. BTECs allow you to directly apply what
you learn and can give you the added benefit of practical
experience. When applying to university or employment,
you’ll need to demonstrate your passion for the field you
wish to study. The benefit of studying a vocational course
is that you automatically gain the practical experience to
show this.
SEMINAR STYLE LEARNING
Our teachers use seminar style learning with students
to help develop analytical thinking skills. Inspired by
university style learning, small groups will discuss exam
questions or work out a solution to a problem. Hearing
from many points of view and perspectives helps students
to deepen their understanding, evaluate and increase
their ability to execute high level thinking skills.
GROUP LEARNING
Group learning helps students to work together as a team.
You may feel that you thrive in a bigger group of students,
absorbing knowledge through group sessions and
bouncing different ideas and opinions off each other. This
approach helps to build leadership and communication
skills.
REAL-WORLD LEARNING
If you’re eager to get started in your career outside of
college, going into the workplace can help you see how
theory works in practice. With over 300 employer links,
all students benefit from a tailored work experience
programme. For those who want more, our professional
courses offer 50 days of industry experience.
SOME OF YOUR LEARNING TAKES PLACE OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM
NewVIc has many flexible spaces, designed
in response to student feedback and to
prepare you for university style learning.
Whether you prefer a quiet environment, or a

the right space.
YOU’RE IN CHARGE
At college you take control of your learning. Throughout your time here you’ll be working and
sharing your ideas with other students on your course with the support of teacher and tutors.
YOU’LL LEARN IN WAYS YOU HAVEN’T EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT
You will explore subjects in new and different
ways. For example subjects such as criminology
study the psychology of crime.
YOU HAVE THE POWER TO INFLUENCE YOUR COURSE
Your views make a meaningful difference. Your
student representatives will include you in

YOU WILL EXPERIENCE THINGS YOU HAVE NEVER DONE BEFORE
At NewVIc there are over 85 different

Our safeguarding and welfare advisers also help with personal issues
