1. INTRODUCTION

Mungeli was formed as tahsil in 1860. It is now newly formed district came into being

on 1st January, 2012. The district consists of 3 administrative blocks/tehsils namely Mungeli,

Patharia and Lormi and total number of villages in the district are 711.

It is situated between latitudes 210

48’35” to 220

40’30” and longitudes 810

29’45” to

820 02’ 10”. It is bounded by Bilaspur on the north and east, Anuppur and Dhindori district of

Madhya Pradesh on the north, Kabirdham on the west, Bemetara district on the south and

Baloda Bazar on the south-east. The area of the district is about 2750.36 km2. The total

population of the district is approximately 7, 01,707 (as per census 2011).

The district is famous for Achanakmar sanctuary which was declared as a tiger

reserve in 2009. Few tourist places of the district are Madku dwip, Motimpur, Hathnikala

temple, Satyanarayan temple, Khudia Dam which is surrounded by mountains from three

sides and is also known as Maniari Jalashaya as constructed over Maniari river. Madku dwip

is famous for ancient Shiv temple of 10-12th

century situated on the bank of Shivnath River

where it is divided into two parts forming a dwip and is about 45 km away from the district

headquarter Mungeli.

District Survey Report has been prepared as per the guidelines of the Gazette of India

notification no. S.O. 141(E) New Delhi, Dated 15th

January 2016 of Ministry of

Environment, Forest and Climate Change mentioned in Appendix-X.

District Environment Impact Assessment Authority (DEIAA) and District

Environment Assessment Committee (DEAC) are constituted to scrutinize and sanction the

environmental clearance for mining of minor minerals of lease area less than 5 hectare.

2. Overview of Mining Activity in the District:

Minerals of economic importance, found in Mungeli district are mainly Limestone,

Dolomite and Quartzite etc. Building materials like aggregate, sand, murrom, ordinary stone,

brick clay are also found in enough quantity.

There are 17 quarries of limestone. These quarries are operational in Patharia,

Mungeli and Lormi tahsil at villages Mungeli, Kosamtara, Khamhardih, Dhamni, Sargaon,

Mohbhatta Badiyadih, Bhakhuridih etc.

01 stone quarry at Budhawara village of Lormi tahsil is leased out. 05 quarries have

been sanctioned for mining of soil to prepare brick at villages Suretha, Surada, Chichesara,

Ramgarh, Khajuri etc. 03 sand quarries have been leased out on the bank of river Maniyari

and Agar at different villages for sand mining.

The mining activity in the district is mainly concentrated in Patharia, Mungeli and

Lormi block.

Approximately 283.72 lakh rupees royalty is earned from all minerals in the district in

2015-16.

6. Process of Deposition of Sediments in the rivers of the

District:

There are some important factors which are responsible for the process of

sedimentation in a river basin are the stage of river development (the infant, youth, mature or

old stage), lithology and structures of the upstream region or provenance from where

sediments eroded/migrated/travelled, geomorphology and gradient of provenance,

anthropogenic activities such as mining, industrialization and mega engineering projects such

as Dam also affects the process of sedimentation and the thickness of the sequence is

determined by the depth of the stream channel during flood stage and is related to the size of

river itself. The major river of the district is Maniari. The river originates in Sarasdol

(Mungeli) and is the largest river in the district and is about 164.93km long. It is very shallow

in depth but sometimes it creates havoc during rain. Other major river of the district is Agar.

Mungeli is a newly formed district of Chhattisgarh. It is situated in the north-north

western part of Chhattisgarh state and it is surrounded by Kawardha district in the west,

Bemetara district in the south and Bilaspur district in the east. Mungeli is situated on the bank

of the rain fed Agar River, which originates from Teliapani, Kabirdham district at an

elevation of 735m, the high hills of the Maikal Range of central India.

Mungeli district is situated between latitude 210

48’35” to 220

40’30” and longitude

810

29’45” to 820 02’ 10” and falls under Survey of India Toposheet No.64 F/7, 8, 10, 11,

64G/9, 13 and 64K/1.

Geomorphologically, the district can be divided into valley fill, denudational plateau,

denudation pediment/ pediplain and high level plateaux. The valley fills occur in the southern

most part. They range in elevation from 260m to 275m. High level plateaux are exposed in

the eastern and western parts, ranging in elevation from 539m to 730m in the east and attain a

maximum elevation of 1006m in the west.

Geologically, Mungeli district is occupied by sedimentary rocks of Chhattisgarh

Super Group mainly consists of aeranaceous and argillaceous rocks which are represented by

11. Geology and Mineral wealth:

In Mungli district rock formations ranging in age from Archean to recent times are

exposed in the area. They include granites, gneisses and older metamorphic of the

Precambrian age, rocks of Chhattisgarh Super group of upper proterozoic age, Gondwanas of

Lower Permian age, Lametas of Upper Cretaceous age, Deccan trap of upper cretaceous to

Eocene age and laterite of Cainozoic age. The Chhota Nagpur Gneissic complex of Archean

to proterozoic age comprises of unclassified granites and granite gneisses, with enclaves of

older metamorphics – Phyllites, Quartzites, Schists and dolomitic marble. This group is

exposed in northern part of the area.

The Chhattisgarh Super group of the rocks occurring in the south unconformably

overlie the Precambrian basement. The Chhattisgarh Super group is divided into Chandarpur

and Raipur groups. The Chandarpur Group comprises sandstone and conglomerate.

Unclassified Raipur group comprising of shale and limestone occurs in the central and south

central part, whereas in the south-eastern part this Group is represented by the rocks of

Gunderdehi Formation, Chandi Formation, Tarenga Formation and Kodwa Formation.

Page 13: DISTRICT SURVEY REPORT MUNGELIenvironmentclearance.nic.in/writereaddata/District/...The district is famous for Achanakmar sanctuary which was declared as a tiger reserve in 2009. Few

Gunderdehi Formation is represented by grey shale, shale and limestone with intra

formational conglomerate. Chandi Formation is comprised of grey, hard and compact shale

and pink dolomite. Tarenga Formation comprises of clay, chert, shale, red calc- argillite,

argillaceous dolomite. Kodwa formation is represented by grey argillaceous dolomite.

Lameta Formation is exposed in the NW part of the district at the foothill of

Amarkantak Plateau. It comprises ash grey coloured cherty/siliceous limestone and greenish

feldspathic (arkosic) sandstone with very thin bands of red clay- variegated in nature.

Deccan Trap of Upper Cretaceous to Eocene age is exposed in west and north western

parts of the district overlying the Lametas. The Basalt flows are dark grey, fine to medium

grained, hard and compact.

Laterite and bauxitic laterite of Cainozoic age are observed on basalts in the west and

northwestern parts of the district. The development of the reddish brown, hard and compact

lateritic profile is due to weathering of the trap rocks, which subsequently has resulted in the

formation of bauxite Zones.

Mineral wealth of Mungeli district:

The Mungeli district has number of significant mineral deposits. Most of the areas of

district is furnished with Limestone and Dolomite. Limestone and Dolomite deposits are

reported from no. of places out of which Khamhardih, Dhamani, Sargaon, Mohbhatta,

Badiyadih, and Bhakhuridih are important. Despite this Gold has been noticed in the

brecciated quartz veins along a shear zone extending between Kosabani

(22021’00”:81

040’00”) and Tingipur (22
