Julius Jantjies (27), a driver for the DTM Nissan dealership in Strand, sustained serious head inju- ries and has been in an induced co- ma in the Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Pinelands since the attack. His father, Julius Snr, is now pleading for action to be taken to en- sure the safety of motorists. “Some- one needs to take responsibility to make our roads safer,” he told Dis- trictMail. The attack happened about 300 m before the R300 turn-off in the direc- tion of Cape Town. It was around 13:00 in the afternoon and Jantjies and a colleague, Garth Vermeulen, were on their way to Sea Point to col- lect a car. Jantjies was driving. Vermeulen says they were in the right-hand lane when he saw a man standing on the side of the road. “I still told Julius to watch out, as it appeared as if the man was going to run across the road,” he recalls. When they were next to the man, an object smashed through the wind- screen on the driver’s side. Confused by what had happened, Vermeulen grabbed the wheel when the car swerved out of control. “I jerked the car back onto the road as I saw blood streaming down Juli- us’ face,” he says. Vermeulen man- aged to steer the car across the road and stopped just before the R300 off- ramp. He says a taxi-driver who was driving behind them stopped and phoned the police and ambulance. Jantjies was still conscious, but did not speak. Vermeulen says he on- ly moaned, while blood was pouring down his face. At first his injuries were not visible, but as Vermeulen saw the right-hand side of his face, he gasped as he realised just how badly injured Vermeulen was. Upon admission to Vincent Pallot- ti, he was placed in an induced coma. He remains in a coma in ICU. The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) recorded 18 crimi- nal incidents on the 150 km of free- ways in Cape Town that it monitors between 4 December and 13 Janu- ary. “The attacks take the form of stone throwing, smash and grabs, or objects being placed on the road sur- face causing motorists to stop, which is when they are attacked and robbed,” says Fiki Masilela, spokes- person for Sanral. Sanral’s Cape Town Freeway Management System (CT FMS), which uses CCTV cameras to moni- tor freeways, has increased its focus on the N2 between Macassar and Vanguard Drive, and on the R300 be- tween the Stellenbosch Arterial and Stock Road, after a number of at- tacks in the past six months. Opera- tors use the CCTV cameras to pan, tilt and zoom onto the highways to detect incidents within a three-min- ute period. The attack on Jantji- es occurred just out of range of Sanral’s CCTV cameras, though, although the cameras did pick up on his vehicle coming to a halt, upon which the police and traffic ser- vices were notified, says Masilela. According to pro- vincial police spokes- person Captain FC van Wyk, the N2 is “well policed”. “The Western Cape Flying Squad, assisted by patrols from the local po- lice stations and other Law Enforce- ment Agencies police the entire route.” Van Wyk said patrols are in- tensified in certain areas. “Using the N2 is no different to any other highway. Caution must be ex- ercised at all times, especially at night.” Provincial transport department spokesperson Siphesihle Dube says after Julius’ attack, traffic patrols were intensified on the N2 between Mew Way and Vanguard Drive, as well as between Hindle Road and Stock Road on the R300. Provincial traffic chief Kenny Af- rica says the N2 is just too large to police. “It’s a complicated situation. There are patrols 24 hours a day, but we can’t cover every 20 metres of the road and we also don’t know when or where these attacks will happen. They don’t occur every day and they can happen out of the blue.” WAITING: Julius Jantjies, father of Julius Jan- tjies Jnr, with Garth Vermeulen, a friend, and his brother Francisco Jantjies. Teenhiker rescued frommountainDELIAH BRINKHUIS

Hikers should always stay together andnot wander off.

This warning comes from WildernessSearch and Rescue (WSAR) after a youngSomerset West hiker was rescued from theHelderbergmountainsbyhelicopteronMon-day evening.

WSAR spokesperson Johann Marais says17-year-old Darrian Lourens was airliftedfrom the top of the mountain by the Skymedhelicopter at 18:30, after losing his way whilehikingwith friends in theHelderbergNatureReserve earlier that day.

Marais says the nine-member rescue teamincluded mountain climbers, paramedicsand helicopter staff from WSAR.

A severely dehydrated Lourens had suf-fered leg cramps and was unable to walk.

WSAR received the call about the lostyoung man at 15:44, Marais explains. Withthehelpof theteenager’scellphoneGPScoor-dinates, a mountain climber and paramedicwere able to reach Darrian, trapped in a clus-ter of brambles about 90 minutes from theKlein Helderberg farm.

Darrian, who hikes up the mountain oncea month, is relieved to have survived the or-deal.

He and four friends had started their hikefrom the Helderberg Nature Reserve at 09:00that day. By midday they had reached thegorge and decided to continue hiking to thetop of the mountain.

At the summit, Darrian decided to splitfrom the group and take a shorter path down.

But he was soon trapped in a cluster ofdense, thorny, head-high trees, and by thenhad finished the water he had taken along.

“I had leg cramps, couldn’t move and hadto lie on the ground,” he says.

His cellphone’s battery power was low, al-though he managed to send his sister AshleyaWhatsappmessagecalling forhelp.Theres-cue mission was speedily initiated, as hismotherBrittacontactedthefirebrigade, whoalerted Emergency Medical Services andWSAR.

“I realise hikers should always stick to-gether and not go into unknown terrain,”Darrian says. He adds that hikers should en-sure family or friends know where they willbe hiking, what time they will finish the hikeand should always carry enough water withthem.

In a separate incident later on Monday, the Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch re-sponded to a call of hikers who were possiblytrapped on the Helderberg mountains.

SWNWspokespersonTonyCrosssaysresi-dents reported seeing possible warning lightsignals from the mountain at 20:00. Memberschecked the reserve’s car park and hiked upthe mountain, where they found parked cars,Cross says. A group of hikers, with head-lamps, descended the mountain at 21:00.

“They were on a night hike and were re-sponsible and well-equipped hikers. Theirheadlamps were mistaken for emergencydistress signals.”

Close to 400 pets housed at AWS kennels last monthJAMEY GORDON

The Animal Welfare Society Helderberg(AWS) appeals to Helderberg residents tosterilise their pets and be realistic about thecosts of keeping a pet.

This after the organisation had to take inand care for hundreds of animals over thefestive season.

AWS manger Julia Evans says their ken-nels in Mansfield Crescent, Gordon’s Baytook in a total of 399 animals – 150 strays,181 surrendered and 68 abandoned animals– in December.

Although 153 animals were successfullyre-homed and 54 animals reclaimed by theirowners during the period, this still remainsa concern which the AWS battles with each

year, says Evans.“Our vet did 414 consultations, sterilised

169 animals and performed 52 operations ofvarious types. Approximately half of the costis recovered by the client paying for the ser-vices which is hugely discounted. The restis unfortunately carried by the welfare andthe donations made by the public,” explainsEvans.

There are no plans to station shark spot-tersonHelderbergbeaches in thenear fu-ture, saysJohanvanderMerwe,MayoralCommitteeMember forEnergy,Environ-mental and Spatial Planning.

This remark was made despite recentshark sightings at Strand and Gordon’s Baybeaches – four in the last two weeks. The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk

Management Department reported sharksightings at Strand Beach on 1, 4 and 7 Janu-ary, as well as a sighting at Gordon’s Bay on4 January.Yolande Fredericks and her family were

visiting Strand beach onWednesday 7 Janu-ary when they were called out of the wateralongwith other swimmers. “Wewere calledout of the water on two occasions, and bothtimes we saw what looked like a shark finin the water,” she told DistrictMail. But Van der Merwe says these are normal

occurrences. “It’s a natural phenomenon.Duringspringandsummer, there isaseason-al increase in the presence of white sharksin the inshore area, as sharks switch preyspecies from seals during winter to migrato-ry game fish, smaller sharkand ray species.”“There areno formal plans to deploy shark

spottersatStrandorGordon’sBay.However,we do provide ad-hoc spotting services inStrand for lifesaving events when request-ed.”Shark spotters operate at Fish Hoek,

Glencairn, Clovelly, St James, Muizenberg,Monwabisi and Noordhoek. They are alsostationed at The Caves in Kogel Bay. “Spot-ters inKogelBayare placed aboveTheCavessurf spot, not over Kogel Bay Resort beach,

as it is too far from their location,” Van derMerwe explains. The last reported shark attack in the Hel-

derberg is believed tohave takenplace inOc-tober 2010,whileDavidLilienfeldwas fatallyattackedwhile bodyboarding at the Caves inApril 2012.Sarah Titley, Shark Spotters’ project man-

ager, says shark activity along theFalseBaycoastline is normal at this time of the year.“Fishactivity increasesasaresultofwarmerwaters, so the sharks follow the fish here,”she explains.“There are no plans to station shark spot-

ters in Strand or Gordon’s Bay, despite un-confirmed sightings – unconfirmed becausethese sharks were not spotted by trainedspotters.”However, Titley, says a “strong request”

from local communities, together with fun-ding, could lead to their deployment.“Even thenwewould need to conduct a tri-

al toverifywhether thesightingswereactualshark sightings.”Shandor Cylban, Strand Surf Lifesaving

Club chairperson, says lifeguards, city lawenforcement officers, local neighbourhoodwatch members and surfers reported sharksightings during the festive season. He echoes Titley’s sentiment that shark

sightings at Helderberg beaches are “nor-mal” at this time of the year, if not regular.“We want to urge beach-goers and swim-

mers to be aware of signals and warningsfrom lifeguards. If they are not sure abouthow safe it is to be in the water, they mustenquire about it from on-duty lifeguards.“And whether we issue a warning about

sharks or water safety, we also urge peoplenot only to think about their own safety, butalso about the safety of others.”

Locals feedhungryheroesJAMEY GORDON

AsbillowsofsmokeengulfedtheHelder-berg and hundreds of firefightersworked around the clock to extinguishthe ragingvegetation fire, the local com-munity also rallied together to supportand feed the heroes battling the blaze.

ThefirebrokeoutonSirLowry’sPass lastThursday and took three consecutive daysto extinguish.

Somerset West resident Isabel Tarling, who believes in being generous and usingtechnology to change people’s outlook onlife, took to Facebook to drive the initiative.

When asked what sparked the idea, Tar-ling explains it as an “organic process”.“The community felt the need to show theirsupportandappreciationtothefiremenwhowere supporting the community. I simplyput out the call.”

Although firefighters receive rationpacks for sustained energy, Tarling reckonsthere is nothing like sinking one’s teeth intoa fresh sandwich or warm pizza slice.

So when Tarling heard the firefightersneeded sandwiches on Friday evening, sheimplored people to assist.

Furthermore, Louise Spagnuolo openedher bank account to monetary donations inaid of the initiative.

Tarling says on Saturday at 07:00, 12 wom-en and Nino Messina were in her kitchenwith spreads and knives in-hand to makesandwiches.

Theteamprepared500sandwiches,whichwere delivered to the firefighters.

Aftermidday,Tarlingputoutanothercallfor further assistance, to which 15 womenrespondedandanother600sandwichesweremade.

“On Saturday evening firefighters weretreated by Spur Waterstone Village who do-

nated 300 burgers and chips.”By 21:45 on Saturday Tarling received

word that the fire had not yet been extin-guished, as well as a request for more treats. The following day almost 750 sandwicheswere distributed.

As a special treat a braai was organisedfor the 25 firefighters who were still on thescene on Sunday.

“At16:45thatafternoonJohnnyBezuiden-hout of Nina’s Restaurant donated 20 kgchicken and rolls. We received so much sup-port, it isunbelievable.Thecommunityreal-ly came to the party.”

The fire broke out near Steenbras Damaround 13:05 on Thursday 8 January andwas finally extinguished on Sunday 11January.

More than 200 firefighters from NatureConservation,CapePine,BulkWater,Work-ing on Fire, the Overberg Municipality andtheCityofCapeTownwereonthesceneeachday.Duringthecourseof theoperation,heli-copters and fixed-wing water bombers werecalled in to water bomb areas which wereinaccessible to firefighters, with pilots col-lecting water from Steenbras Dam.

The dam’s water levels weren’t seriouslyaffected. City Disaster Risk Managementspokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannessays the upper dam water level measuredat 98,55% on Tuesday compared to 98,63%onTuesday6January.The lowerdamwaterlevel measured at 57,02% on Tuesday com-pared to 59,81% last Tuesday.

There were rumours that the fire flaredup again at Knorhoek on Monday. City FireServices spokesperson Theo Layne, howev-er, says it was not a flare-up but a “new call”of a vegetation fire, to which one fire engineand two water tankers responded at 14:40.The blaze was extinguished by 18:47.

“The suspected cause of the fire was anopen flame.”

Sy was uitgeteer, ondervoed envuil.

Arriving home from the office onFriday 9 January, I saw a group offour boys, aged between seven and10, rummaging through one of thebins. Another group, consisting oftwo boys and a girl, also betweenseven and 10, was rummagingthrough the other bin.

ClarityonSomersetWest CPFelections’ postponement

Readerswill recall that theSomer-set West Community Policing Fo-rum (CPF) had been suspended inDecember 2013 and barred fromholdinganypublicmeetings, afterallegations of misconduct weremade about its processes andmembers of its executive commit-tee.

In October 2014 it was decidedthat elections would be held in De-cember 2014 in an effort to “clearthe slate”.

At the December meeting of theCPF, it transpired that organisa-tions that were seemingly entitledto register had been denied regis-tration and it was unclear whichorganisations had been success-ful with their applications.

So, once again the public activi-ties of the CPF have effectivelybeen suspended, this time untilMarch 2015, when police seniormanagement from Khayelitshawill personally oversee and vali-

date the process. One can only hope that when

public elections are finally heldfor this misgoverned group, pow-er aspirations and petty politicswill be put aside and the interestsof the community will be at theforefront of peoples’ minds whenthey nominate their candidates.

TONY CROSSSOMERSET WEST

HughRoe, chairperson of theSomerset West CPF, responds:An individualmade a complaint

regarding the election process fol-lowed in 2010. No allegations ofmisconductweremadeagainst anymember. While public meetings were put

on hold pending investigations bythe then cluster commander, allotherCPFmeetingsandduties con-tinued. When the new cluster com-mander took up his role, there hadstill been no resolution about thecomplaint.

The cluster commander and theclusterCPFtookover the investiga-tion and their decisionwas that thecurrent Somerset West CPF wouldcontinue in its role.It was not decided to hold elec-

tions inDecember2014“to clean theslate”. It had longagobeendecidedby the Department of CommunitySafety and the police that nationalelections for all CPF bodies wouldbe held in December 2014.Theclustercommanderandclus-

terCPFwerepresent to“personallyoversee and validate the process”for these elections, as had beenplanned in September 2014. Thereason the elections were not heldwas that provincial representa-tives from the Department of Com-munity Safety did not arrive. It was further agreed that the

CPF structure and status quowould remain until the elections, hopefully taking place in the mid-dle to latter part of February 2015.

Respectnatureandstay safe

The mountains and sea are what at-tract many people to either live inor visit the Helderberg.

As beautiful as these naturalwonders are, they can also be verydangerous if not respected.

A drowning in the sea at StrandBeach and a teenager getting lostwhile hiking on Helderberg Moun-tain these school holidays bear testi-mony to this.

Safety is of the utmost importancewhen swimming in the sea or climb-ing a mountain.

Always obey lifeguards and swimin designated areas when in the sea;always follow marked hiking routesand stay together when hiking in themountains.

Hikersareadvisedto carry plentyof water with them in hot weatherand wear sun-protective clothing.

Failure to obey rules and regula-tions could result in serious injuryor even death, and thousands ofrands unnecessarily spent on rescueoperations.

Remember to be safe, respect na-ture and obey the rules and regula-tions.

Thanks tomunicipalityfor Sunday rescue jobIn this day and age of people being readyto complain and condemn people andcorporations for perceived lack of ser-vice and quality, I would like to take thetime to send a message of thanks to myneighbour and compliments to the Hel-derberg municipality.

A mains water pipe burst in my drive-way in the Links area of Somerset Westlast Sunday afternoon.

I was not home but my neighbour no-ticed the break and the damage it wascausing.

He promptly phoned the municipalityand – to their credit – a team arrivedwithin the hour.

I returned home to find a crew work-ing at opening up a hole to gain accessto the damaged pipe, I spoke to the fore-man who promised me that they wouldrestore water as soon as possible.

They did! They worked until afterdark, but before they departed they hadrestored water and filled in the hole sothat it was safe to park in the driveway.

All this on a Sunday evening. The crew soon returned and by

Wednesday midday had relaid all mybrick paving so that you would neverknow anything had happened.

It heartens me to see that our tax andrates payments are used correctly andthat, at least in this area, we have a func-tioning municipality.

A very big thank you and well doneto all concerned.

small businesses in the CBD,” Fer-nando reckons.Abbygaile Engelbrecht, owner of

Van’s Jewellers, says the new yearhas kicked off with a move to otherpremisesandshe isnowlooking for-ward to a new beginning at Foun-tain Square, from where she willrun her business as of next month.Van’s Jewellers had been operatingfrom its current premises in Mich-ael’sArcadefor42years,but thesaleof the building prompted Engel-brecht to move on.Engelbrecht says the word on the

street is that the building wasboughtbyEssentialPharmacy, whowillbedemolishing thearcade tode-velop a medical centre with a phar-macy as the anchor tenant.“Our customers need not worry,

Van’s Jewellerswill still be offeringquality products and service, sim-ply fromdifferent premises,”Engel-brecht assures them.

Shesays customers can also look for-ward to the opening of their newstorePink–asatWaterstoneVillage– at The Vergelegen Plein, the newCheckers Centre being developedon Sir Lowry’s Pass Road.Engelbrecht’s wish for 2015 is for

SomersetWestCBDtobeclean, withincreased police vigilance.“Even after the recent spate of

armed robberies, police patrolshave been minimal,” she says.Arleen Seyfried, owner of Somer-

set West Book Exchange, says herbusinessplan for thisyear is to“car-ry on [running her business] as shehas been doing for the past 42years”.“I have no intention ofchanging anything or doing any-thingdifferently.Therearewonder-ful people in Somerset West, who

still love to pick up abook and read, de-spite all the techno-logical advances. And, I just lovethem,” says Seyfried. She does, however,

hope that a bigger ef-fort is made to curbcrimeandhelppeopleliving on the streetsin Somerset West.Clark Pools owner

Malcolm Stuurmanstrives to grow hisbusiness, make moremoney and ensure

there is always work for his employeesthis year. “By being honest and relia-ble, of course, just likemy father taughtme. I must be able to sleep at night,”he laughs.Stuurman believes if everyone joins

hands in the fight against crime andhelpsmake theCBDamoreaesthetical-ly pleasing place, it would contributeto thesuccessofallSomersetWestbusi-nesses.Jacqui Louw of St Basil’s Pizzeria

saystheywillbe launchinganewindul-gent menu and introducing a whole-wheat pizza base. Louw hopes the newyear will bring more customers andbetter security in the CBD. “We wantSomersetWest tobewhat itwas in1995,when people could walk the streets atnight without fear. Now half the CBDhas vacant stores and it feels as if no-one cares about the next person.”

the reefs and shore, making shore anglinga little easier.

There is at present a lot less “bubble sea-weed” (bladder wrack) in the shallows, re-sulting in a number of veterans spinning onBlake’s Beach and on the reefs.

On Saturday Martin Gebers, an old cam-paigner among the spinnermen, was suc-cessful in catching and releasing some goodsize leerie (leerfish or garrick).

Martin uses the old-reel-and -sweep meth-od when spinning, which causes the lure tovary in speed, which entices the fish to lungeforward and strike the lure with its tail. Thisaction by the leerie results in the treble hookfoul-hooking the fishin the back or near thedorsal fin.

I would say thataround 90% of all thelarger garrick on ourbeaches and reefs arefoul-hooked by spin-nermen.

There were also anumber of elf caughtby anglers spinningfrom the Strand reefsduring the weekend.

On Saturday even-ing Willem de Jonghand his son had theirquotas of kob of be-tween one and twokilogram on BlakesBeach after sunset.

Johan Uys and DanieRoland also bagged anumber of kob of be-tween 1,5 and 2kg justbehind Blake’s Islandusing good qualityfresh pilchards.

Hennie Beukes, fishing off the Bioscoperocks, also caught five kob, just size, and upto 2kg.

On Saturday the Pearly Beach Rock andSurf- Angling Club held its first monthlycompetition. Sixty anglers participated butonly 19 fish were weighed. A number ofsmaller fish were also released.

In first place was Deon Strydom with twokob with a total weight of 14,7kg. Barry Mull-er was second with two kob with a totalweight of 9,4kg and third was Hannes Smutsalso with two kob with a total weight of 9kg.Riaan Steyn was fourth with one kob of 1,5kg.

Club spokesman Ferdi Joubert said that

there was quite a number of smaller kobcaught at Die Dam area.

The smaller local boats and kayaks fishingin the Strand poort and surrounding areashad their quotas of kob, elf and the odd geel-bek.

Local boatman Manie Swart and crew fish-ing in Hangklip Bay on Thursday reportedexcellent catches of geelbek and kob, somein the 8kg class.

News from well-known charter boat skip-per Alan du Plessis was that there are stillplenty of tunny in the Canyon area.

Skippers of the big professional vessels re-ported that the sea was too rough during theweekend for local boats to venture out.

Alan said there were superb catches of yel-lowtail reported at Struisbaai from the 12mile and 40 mile Alpha banks.

Anglers interested in chartering a boat tocatch marlin, yellowtail and bankfish are re-minded that Alan will be spending the nexttwo months in Struisbaai and can be contact-ed on 083 4532 808.

The prospects of fishing for geelbek in theHangklip and Rooi Els areas from smallboats or the shore during the South Eastercould be fruitful.

Anglers wanting to buy the new largerfixed-spool reels (coffee grinders) shouldtake care and do a bit of homework beforemaking an uninformed purchase. Knowl-edgeable anglers and tackle dealers recom-mend better-known brands such as the Shi-mano Stellar Range such as models 8 and 10.This range has spares readily available.

For all your reel repairs and services, con-tact Art on 021 854 3831.

Send your fishing news and photos [email protected].

Now that most of the up-country visitorshave started to leave the Helderberg, there is a littlemore space on the beachesfor anglers fishing in the evenings.

StGeorgesRugbyFootballClub’sfirst team players and coachingpersonnel have been hard atwork, since December, prepar-ing for the 2015 season.

St Georges RFC, affectionatelyknown as the Lulu Boys, were pro-moted from the Western ProvinceSuperLeagueB to the SuperLeagueA – the top tier within the union’sclub rugby structure – at the end ofthe 2014 season.Their promotion came as a result

of their 25-23 win in their promo-tion/relegation play-off match over

Kuils River RFC.After their impressive season the

club’s head coach, Wilbur Kraak, was nominated byWP, to attend theprestigious World Rugby Level 3coaching course (formerly Interna-tional Rugby Board). This course, held over four days,

has coaches from all forms of thegame, plan and strategise a com-pleteseasontoenablethemtobeear-marked by their respective unionsshould their expertise be required.“As a young aspiring coach, this

is indeed a huge honour for me. Iwish to thank the union for nomi-nating and placing their trust inmeand my abilities,” Kraak says.

“I realise there are many coacheswho could have been nominatedahead of me; I’m blessed and hum-bled for this golden opportunity.”The Lulu Boys are also the 2014

OK Minimark Wesbank 7s champi-ons and will defend the title in Mal-mesbury later in the month. The club’s 7s head coach, Lester

Riffel, has been in charge of the sidefor the greater part of the last dec-ade. Previously a 7s stalwartwithinthe Lulu Boy ranks himself, Riffelhas formed a formidable side overthe last few seasons. The 7s squad trains on Wednes-

days and Saturdays, which poses achallenge for Riffel and his charges

as he needs to manage his intensitygiven that most of his players alsoplay in the 15-man code. For information about training

time and the quality of life that ourplayers should be enjoying at homeas much as they do on the field,”Kraak commentedon the club’s per-spective pertaining to family time.
