Career Portfolio Project  In Mrs. Kelly’s technical writing classes, students have been completing a Career Portfolio Project. For this project, the students have taken career aptitude tests, researched possible career paths, learned about interview techniques, and they have even written resumes and cover letters for a future job. Last week, her students participated in "Speed Interviews" where one student was the interviewer, and the other student was pretending to be interviewed for the job they researched. The interviewers scored the students interviewing on greeting, body language/posture, eye contact, how the student answered the questions asked, and overall opinion. After about a minute, the people interviewing moved to a new interviewer, and they were asked another bunch of questions. After they made it to all the interviews, the students switch positions, and the interviewers became the ones being interviewed.

Toyota Job Shadowing Day  Toyota Mississippi hosted its first Job Shadowing Day on November 13th. One student from each of the PUL Alliance schools was selected to attend, Ciara Conner represented PHS and spent an activity-filled day at the Toyota facility in Blue Springs. Ciara took part in a plant overview and tour of the facility; a meet and greet with Toyota executives; and was assigned to a Toyota mentor. Ciara's mentor was Toyota chemical engineer, Chasidy West. Mrs. West had lunch with Ciara and then they spent the afternoon in Mrs. West's paint department work area. Ciara learned about the daily tasks of a Toyota chemical engineer and learned about the painting processes used for the Toyota Corolla. She even got to try out a painting simulator, used in training employees. Thank you, Toyota, for this student career awareness and mentoring opportunity.

What have we  been doing?

In APUSH we have traveled with Columbus to the New World and explored the variety of Native Americans tribes. We analyzed the different colonies of the New World and learned about the foundation of America. As with great progress comes individuals who are exposing the different areas of America that need changing---reformers. Students participated in a lively discussion about the different areas of change that must take place in America. Students investigated the different causes of the Civil War along with exploring some Civil War relics. Students finished their Civil War unit with a nice trip to Tupelo to watch the new film, Harriet. US History takes off with the Transcontinental Railroad and makes various stops along the way. Exploring topics such as: Immigration, Imperialism, WWI, the 1920s, and more. Students analyze Great Depression pictures and created poems (see student poem about the Dust Bowl on next page ). Because students learned so much about FDR, students threw the former president a funeral, and enjoyed creating art pieces for the Cold War during a “cold” morning.

Socratic Seminar Mrs. Knight's English III student teacher taught her classes about Socratic Seminars this week. Students compared and contrasted gender roles and expectations of Daisy from The Great Gatsby to Mrs. Maloney in "Lamb to the Slaughter." Students had in-depth, class-wide conversations while using critical-thinking skills to answer higher-order thinking questions.

The Land of Dust

This was once my dwelling but now an anguish What I once relished becomes my plagued fantasy

Every spec of dust cages me I want out but once I leave I am no one

No home, no living Why am I here?

I beg and I plead

Please open this door The wind is harsh but the dust is worse

Do not leave to suffer with the rest of this land He comes near and shreds my tears

I cough and cry

Though no one is there to hear my cries For I am here with the rest of them

And all alone I am I do not want to be

But I must go for I cannot stay But I have already left for the dust has me captured

I am sorry Written by Sophia Euceda

Candy canes are being sold at PJHS. Come see Mrs. Cooper, Mrs.

Mcgregor, or Mrs. Holladay to purchase your sweet treat!!

November is one of two very important attendance months. If students “Attend

Today”, they will “Achieve Tomorrow”! Did you know that each day a student is considered absent, the school loses

$18.00? While that may not seem like much, think about how this adds up across an entire school district!

 Example- November 11, 2019:

Total Cost of Absenteeism- $2,268.00 Total Enrollment- 2,348 Students

Total Students Absent- 126

Mrs. Holladay’s Cyber Foundations II classes have been hard at work on coding and creating apps! While they are currently working on their individual apps

that help show their personalities and interests, they started out with one step apps as seen below in the pictures.

Their final products will be ready in a couple of weeks! Some of their ideas

include; restaurant finders, chat rooms, and virtual field trips. This is great first hand experience for the technical world!

Hugging is her favorite part of being a nurse and she loves coming to work everyday. Nurse Ruby said a big part of her job is loving her patients and trying to help prevent sickness so everyone will be at school everyday. When she isn’t treating students she is at the Health Department learning about new things she can do, looking at records and contacting parents. PES is so lucky to have Nurse Ruby!

Long Ago

Page 21: District Events PHS Events - Pontotoc High School · Ciara's mentor was Toyota chemical engineer, Chasidy West. Mrs. West had lunch with Ciara and then they spent the afternoon in

On November 14th first grade had visitors to kick off a Long Ago mini unit. There were several stations that introduced our students to how different things were back long ago. Mrs. Phyllis High came to talk about how schools were long ago. Mrs. Jill Westmoreland

came to talk about quilting and the importance of quilts. We had the Pontotoc's Dulcimer Group to come and demonstrate instruments. Students were also exposed to black and white tv shows. We had parent volunteers to play games like Hot Potato and Simon Says.

Students were amazed at how different things are now.

Text Feature Surgery

Mrs. Pettit’s Second Grade Class had fun practicing text features by performing text feature surgery. Students had to analyze symptoms of patients to determine which

text feature would help them. They found examples of that text feature in a magazine and glued it on their paper. Afterwards, the students filled out a Post-Op Report where

they had to identify the purpose of each text feature and how it helps the reader.
