DG Margaret ‘Hass’ Hassall

April 2019 LETTER

The Media Release is now out – wonderful news that the Berry club has been promised $4million to work on a parkland in an area that has become available because of the bypass. The funding of course was very much dependent on the State Liberal Government being returned after the March 23 election. I’m thrilled for the Berry club, but also for Rotary as it is an indication of the esteem in which it is held, its integrity and its purpose in getting a job done. Janet Brandon of the Pambula Rotary Club has been made a member of the Paul Harris Society which acknowledges her commitment of a donation of $1000USD to the Rotary Foundation per year. Congratulations, Janet! Congratulations also to Rowley and Denise Tompsett on their recognition as Major Donors. It was with great sadness that the news was received of the sudden passing of Janet Maughan, President of the Merimbula RC. It was a shock to all and it was gratifying to see so many Rotarians joining in with the members of the Merimbula RC to farewell Janet. Another sadness was the passing of Laurice Jarvis, wife of Murray, member of the Pambula RC. Murray, a respected Rotarian and active despite his 92 years, has been part of the Rotary family for 57 years, his wife supporting him in all of his Rotary activities. Again the Rotary presence was notable at Laurice’s farewell. To Janet’s family, friends and club members and to Murray and the Jarvis family, friends and club members, please accept my sympathy.

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all the clubs who are increasing their membership. One initiative that has been successful has been the business breakfast conducted by the Bega club, led by President Marg Taylor. This gathering, once a month, attracts young business people and it has generated much interest in joining the club. There is now the possibility of having a satellite club that meets for breakfast. Representatives of District 9710 attended the D9700 Conference at Griffith: Debbie Whitfield who was busy spreading the word about the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF); Bruce and Jill Gruber who were catching up with their former friends in D9700; Dr Celeste Rossetto who spoke about her Youth Exchange experience and the changes it brought in her life; Sofia Castelli, the Youth Exchangee who is being hosted by the Moss Vale club; and myself. It was an inspiring and challenging weekend, friendly and fun. The 20’s theme dinner saw lots of feather boas and Al Capone clones. As we draw near to the end of the Rotary year, many clubs would be thinking of their disbursements. I am hoping that donations to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) are high on the list of priorities. As yet this year, the district donations to TRF are not at the level I was anticipating, so I am hoping that in the last two months, donations will increase noticeably. Please remember the Four Way Test in all our dealings with other Rotarians and members of the public. Whatever an individual’s code of ethics, the Test is a wonderful guide to bear in mind in all aspects of our lives. Don’t forget the District Changeover on 30

June when Peter Ford becomes DG and I become a ‘has been’. My DG year has been full of wonderful people and experiences. I hope Easter is a time of reflection and relaxation and everyone can enjoy the wonderful changes of colours in our trees.

A BERRY BIG BOOST FOR ROTARY ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP has today announced that a re-elected NSW Liberals and Nationals Government will commit $4 million towards an all ages and fully accessible adventure playground in Berry. Mr Ward said that this project has been pioneered by Berry Rotary who have worked with the community and Roads and Maritime Services since the conclusion of the Berry Bypass. “From the Berry Bypass to a brand new ambulance station, I love working hard and getting results for the northern Shoalhaven,” he said. “This concept is a first for our region and is very exciting for all involved. Like many adventure playgrounds, “Boongaree” will provide a range of activities for all ages and levels of ability, “Berry Rotary has been working hard to raise funds for this project since 2014 with the project adopted by Shoalhaven City Council as part of the Berry Strategic Plan in 2016. A future NSW Liberals and Nationals will back this initiative which will be of regional significance. “Similar playgrounds in other parts of the country are not just popular with local families, but these facilities become tourism attractions for younger families that may want to play and stay in Berry. “A community stakeholder workshop to commence the development of the Master Plan for the whole of the Berry District Park was held in April 2017. “After considerable input by all user groups and the community, the final version for this Master Plan was endorsed by Council in late 2018,” Mr Ward said.

The Chair of the Nature Play Parkland Steering Committee Grahame Sweeney said the announcement was an important acknowledgement of a great project. “We welcome the announcement by our local Member Gareth Ward and we thank him for working so closely with Berry Rotary to make this important commitment for local families. “The Nature Play Parkland will cater for pre-school aged children, primary aged children and young teenagers, along with facilities for adults as carers and play partners, and also family get-togethers,” Mr Sweeney said. Boongaree will include:

A diverse range of settings, physically accessible, socially inclusive and welcoming for all young families regardless of their level of ability;

A wide range of attractions to allow favourite mini-spaces, with graded challenges to help children develop their physical skills and gain a sense of satisfaction as they develop their confidence;

Flying foxes, climbing nets, water channels and tunnels, the area will encourage children to ponder over details of nature, to play creatively with loose materials, to imagine, to role play and engage socially with each other in games of their own; and

A ‘learn to ride’ roadway track to enable learning of road rules for local school students, along with senior’s fitness and exercise stations, BBQ picnic areas, garden landscaping and toilets.

SOUTH PACIFIC AND PHILIPPINES OFFICE

18 March 2019

Dear Club Officers,

Greetings from the Rotary International South Pacific and Philippines Office!

Your club can earn a Rotary Citation for achieving goals that strengthen Rotary and your club. Goals

include increasing club membership, developing sustainable service projects, giving to The Rotary

Foundation, and building awareness of Rotary in your community.

We are aware that a number of clubs will be aiming to achieve Citation. To assist you in meeting

eligibility this Rotary year, we would like to remind you that to be eligible, clubs need to begin the

year as active clubs in good standing and remain so throughout the year. For the purposes of the

citation only, good standing means that a club has paid each invoice balance in full upon receipt (and

hasn’t received a 60-day reminder letter from Rotary International Accounts Receivable). To verify

that your club is in good standing this semester, check your daily club balance report in MyRotary

under Club Administration > Club Finances. You should have an outstanding balance of $0.00.

The 60-day reminder letter will be sent by the 22nd of March. The best way to settle all balances will

be via Online payments on MyRotary. Here’s how you can do this: How to Pay Your Invoice.

For more information on the 2018-19 Rotary Citation, click on the following links to view the

Achievement Guide and brochure.

We hope you will find this communication helpful in achieving your club goals.

Best Regards,

Bruce Allen

The 2019 ride will be on the same routes as 2018

Again with great food along the way

Dairy Farmers Hill in the Arboretum will be included again as a sixth peak and participants enjoyed that hill in recent

years.

We have conducted this event since 2004 making 2019 our 15th year.

Welcome to the Rotary Rides Canberra Five Peaks Challenge

(With a bonus sixth peak)

It's on Sunday 28 April 2019

The 2019 event raises money for charity – Australian Rotary Health, ShelterBox

and local charities.

This non-competitive cyclo-sportive bike riding event provides a great challenge to ride the six peaks of

Canberra – Mount Stromlo, Red Hill, Mount Pleasant, Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain and Dairy Farmers Hill (in the

Arboretum). It is historically named 'Five Peaks Challenge' but since 2015, when Dairy Farmers Hill (in the Arboretum)

was added, it has six peaks for you. That's 20% extra!

And it's a great way to see Canberra from the saddle with support along the course, great home-made food at the

refreshment stations and energy snacks at the peaks.

You do not have to ride up any of the peaks. Your non-climbing partner can by-pass them all and ride 87 km

(longer route) or 57 km (shorter route) or you can by-pass any you find too difficult.

There are two ride lengths (about 117 km or 88 km if all peaks ridden). Ride all six peaks for a total elevation

gains of about 2,000 m on the longer ride and 1,450 m on the shorter ride.

New to hill climbing? Then read our hill climbing training tips.

We are aligned with Rotary Fitness an initiative that supports Rotary club and community fitness activities and in the process, raise funding for new medical research, scholarships, health education and awareness. The least that can

happen is you’ll get fitter, make new friends and help to improve the lives of thousands as you exercise.

It's a major fund-raiser for Woden Rotary and their supported charities

Australian Rotary Health, ShelterBox and many local charities.

Australian Rotary Health is an independent national, not-for-profit organisation

that provides funds for a broad range of general health areas, including:

Mental health research within Australia -it is one of the largest independent funders of

such research Scholarships for rural medical and nursing students Indigenous health students Areas of health that do not readily attract funding

Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision to improve the health and wellbeing of all

Australians and promotes findings to the community.

Australian Rotary Health is supported by a number of Rotary Clubs in Australia.

ShelterBox Australia provides emergency disaster relief, shelter, tools and water purification kits, for families robbed of their homes by disaster (natural and conflict).

They are transforming despair into hope with the aim of creating positive, lasting

change in communities at home and all over the world.

Right now, around 85 million people around the world have been made homeless by

natural disaster and conflict. ShelterBox Australia is working to change this.

Rotary is a project partner with ShelterBox and together they are able to collaborate

and combine resources to ensure that more communities are supported when in

desperate need of shelter.

Rotarians and Rotary groups across the world support ShelterBox in a number of ways, including raising funds and providing support on the ground during the

response to a disaster. That enables ShelterBox to cross boundaries and cut through

red tape to reach even the most remote communities.

ShelterBox is impatient to see a world where no family is left without shelter. Are you

able to help?

Thank you to our supportors ...

Congratulations to the members of the Canberra North Rotary Club as the club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, the club being founded on 16 January 1969. The photo was taken of the board in a light hearted moment when Harold Pennay was rewarded for his years of service. Harold is the only remaining charter member who is still active in the club. His wife, Anne, was given a Paul Harris Fellow for all the support she has given to the club over the years as well. Rowley and Denise Tompsett’s award of Major Donor is a recognition of the donation of $10,000USD to the Rotary Foundation. The award was presented by Mark Anderson, Senior Coordinator, Fund Development, The Rotary Foundation.

FOR JANET MAUGHAN – (29/1/1948 to 4/3/2019) President Rotary Club of Merimbula 2018-19

Our friend and colleague Janet Maughan leaves us today in body but her spirit will stay in our hearts as a very dear friend and the hardest worker for her much loved Merimbula Rotary Club. From the moment she joined us she was into all things Rotary be it volunteering not only for the markets and taking on the hard job of being the booking contact for stallholders but making new aprons when our old ones got tatty, making the burgers, enforcing a first aid committee which involved first aid courses for members of our club and the purchase of a defibrillator and updated medical kit. Her hand went up first for any activity – Eat Merimbula, NYE, mock interviews at local schools, SPAN, Twyford Hall, Mothers’ Day Fun Run, Pambula2Merimbula Run, Merimbula Chamber of Commerce (she really wanted a Chrissy tree and decorations in the town this Christmas) and making pouches for orphaned kangaroos and a successful Rural Women’s Gathering last year to mention just a few. She was a straight shooter and her opinions were always sought as you knew she would tell it the way it was. Janet was always looking for ways to help our club raise not only funds but our profile in the community which she did with great enthusiasm. She was also involved in Rotary youth programs and would have been our Youth Director after her tenure as President – she was looking forward to this work.

Janet always thought she did not do enough as Merimbula Rotary President but that is the complete opposite to her achievements in our club – she will be sorely missed but well remembered in our Club’s history as her catch cry of “why can’t we” is already ringing in my ears as ideas come forth for future projects. On a more personal note Janet was a very dear friend particularly to the Merimbula lady members who all enjoyed a personal relationship with her be it coffee and cake to discuss the problems of the world, a movie featuring “hunks’ like Chris Hemsworth, or just a shoulder to lean or even cry on. I was used to either seeing or speaking to Janet on a daily basis and her passing will leave a tremendous hole in my heart. Goodbye Janet – we all miss you already! Gai Byrne Secretary, Rotary Club of Merimbula Inc.
