OUR LOCAL ICONS Dr. Fedrick Ingram was the first African-American elected to serve as President of the United Teachers of Dade and is a product of Miami Dade Public Schools. He graduated from Miami Jackson Senior High School, Bethune-Cookman University as a music education major, studied at Barry University in the Educational Leadership master’s program and is currently pursuing his M.B.A. at the Keller School of Management. Pursuing his love of music, he became a music teacher and Band Director at Booker T. Washington and Miami Carol City High School, serving in the classroom for ten years. Dr. Ingram is an accomplished musician in his own right having performed throughout the state and nationally as a commercial artist – saxophone being his principal instrument. In 2006, Dr. Ingram became the Francisco R. Walker Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year and went on to become one of five finalists for the State of Florida Teacher of the Year. In 2007, he was elected Secretary/Treasurer of United Teachers of Dade and served two terms in that position. Dr. Ingram is also a member of the NAACP, The National Action Network, and the A. Phillip Randolph Institute. On May 2nd, 2015, Dr. Ingram received an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Florida Memorial University. On October 14, 2015, Dr. Ingram was elected as Vice President of the Florida Education Association.

Chief Delrish Moss is a law enforcement veteran appointed in March 2016 as Police Chief of Ferguson, Missouri. Chief Moss was born in Miami, Florida and graduated from Miami High School in 1982. Growing up in Overtown, he witnessed violence in the community and he was once frisked by a Miami police officer for no apparent reason. Chief Moss says his motivation to eventually become a police officer was that he wanted to teach police how to treat people. In 1984, Chief Moss worked as a public service aide for Miami Police Department and decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. Within three years, he was a patrolman on the streets of Miami's historically black communities, Overtown, Liberty City, Allapattah and Coconut Grove. He was promoted to homicide detective in 1989. In 1995, then-Police Chief Donald Warsaw convinced Moss to become a spokesman for the city. He served as president of the Miami Police Athletic League and is a member of the NAACP. He was appointed to the Police Chief position in Ferguson over 53 other applicants to replace Police Chief Andre Anderson, who was suspended in August 2015. Chief Moss was sworn in May 9, 2016, becoming the first permanent African-American chief in Ferguson, where the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen-ager, served as a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement.
