Cinemas are good methods of primary distribution, because the audiences arte able to go and watch the Descent in the cinema if they want to watch it as soon as possible, when it comes out. Moreover, cinemas are good methods of primary distribution, because they consist of all the up to date technology such as 4K high definition projected screens and the newest surround sound system. Also, the cinema provides confortable seats and a good viewing space. As a result, this is a good distribution method because it maximises they enjoyment of the movie, resulting in a higher chance of the audience wanting to view it again and recommend the movie to other people. In context of the Descent, which was released on August 4 th 2006, 4k was not available then, therefore people were able to enjoy it on high definition screens, which still maximise the enjoyment of the movie. Primary

An example of primary distribution is cinemas. Cinemas are examples of primary distribution, because the audience can access the movie in the cinemas first before any other distribution method.

In context of the Descent, which was released on August 4th 2006, 4k was not available then, therefore people were able to enjoy it on high definition screens, which still maximise the enjoyment of the movie. Furthermore, due to the Descent being released on this date, there are many distribution methods that were not available that are available today, such as it was released on VCR before being released on DVD. The cost that the film would be available to watch at the cinema would be around £8; therefore the viewing of the Descent would be affordable for many audiences. Moreover, the aspect of advertisement is needed to influence the audience into using this product and to want to view it. Advertisement is need in order to make the product appealing to the audience, so therefore hey would want to watch it. A type of advertisement that would be used in order to make the distribution method successful is a movie trailer, so the audience is able to get a vague idea of what aspects the movie will include and to see if the movie is applicable to them. This is the quickest type of distribution, as the movie will be available to watch as soon as it passes the BBFC testing and screening. The Descent compared to blockbusters, such as Skyfall did not make as much profit and was not as successful. This was because of the fact that the Descent did not have a wide enough audience compare to Skyfall and had a smaller budget than Skyfall.

Secondary

An example of secondary distribution is DVD and Blu-ray’s. DVD’s and Blu-ray’s are an example of secondary distribution, because the audience gets access to the movie to watch or re watch after it has been through and released in the cinema. DVD and Blu-ray’s are good methods of secondary distribution, because they allow the audience to watch the movie in the comfort of they own homes. DVD and Blu-ray’s are good types of secondary distribution, although the audience members will have to have good technology and gear such as high definition TV’s in order to get the most out of the movie and to be fully entertained. Therefore, it will be quite expensive to maximise the enjoyment of the movie at home if the members of the audience do not have up to date technology. As the Descent was released in 2006, it was also available on VCR, this would be a good method to watch at home, but would not give the best resolution as the cinema would. The Descent was released on VCR, DVD and Blu-Ray on December 26th 2006. At the initial release, the DVD and VCR film was available for around £8 and the Blu-ray for around £10. The movie would be released upon this distribution method about a several months after being released in cinemas.

Another example of secondary distribution method is video on demand, such as sky movies and Netflix. Video on demand is a good type of secondary distribution, because the audience is able to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes, and alike the use of DVD and Blu-ray’s, you need up to date technology in order to maximise the enjoyment of the movie. This is also a good type of secondary distribution method because the audience is able to pause and rewind the movie in their own time exactly the way that they want. The Descent was released on the Netflix and sky movies a year or two later from the initial release of the movie. This time gap is due to the fact that sky movies and Netflix was not used widely at he time, compared to now much they are used now. In order to have access and use these methods of distribution, you need to subscribe to sky and Netflix. Netflix costs £6.99 a month and sky costs £18.50 a month, which is quite expensive considering you need to have satellite access and internet access to be able to first use these distribution methods.

Another example of secondary distribution is digital downloads, such as downloading from iTunes. This is a good type of secondary distribution, because the audience is able to watch it whenever they want and wherever they want, therefore they have a lot of accessibility when watching the movie. Also, this is a good type of secondary distribution, because people are able to use iTunes and watch the movie on portable devices such as smartphones, again this gives them good accessibility. In order for the

audience members to use this distribution method they need to have a smart phone, which can be costly depending on the type, generally ranging from £100 to £400. They also need to have Internet access, which again can be costly, depending on the speed and provider; otherwise they can download and watch in a public place with free Internet access, such as McDonalds. The Descent on iTunes costs $12.99; therefore this is the more expensive option to pay for the single movie.

Piracy

Piracy can affect a movie, such as the Decent, in a very significant way. As, piracy can lead to a movie failing and not raising enough finance. This can also play a major impact and alter the successfulness of the film. This can be considered as a distribution method as the audience get to watch the film, but illegally. Movie piracy and streaming from online websites is considered as theft, because overall it cost the film industry £500 million. For the audience to obtain a less legitimate copy, such as a pirated DVD or torrent, they can either buy pirated DVD, which cost a fraction of the price for the legitimate DVD, the profit made by the seller of the pirated DVD does not contribute to the to the sum of money made by the distributer who has made the film, which is why it is classed as theft. To obtain a torrent and watch in the comfort of their own homes, the audience needs to have access to a computer and Internet access on it. Then they need to go on a illegal website which allows you download torrents, pirate bay. This is considered as being illegal; therefore the audience can get prosecuted for this and fined. Overall, piracy plays a big impact upon the film industry and in this context the Descent, as if all the consumers watched the movie legitimately, the movie could be far more successful.
