Around the County CWF—Presidential Inauguration

January 17-21, 2017

Eleven New Jersey 4-H teen delegates attended the Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration. Teen Council and Be The Change 4-H Clubs member, Jessica Zhang, represented Morris County at this event. Nearly 500 4-H youth and adults representing 25 states were present.

The purpose of this event was to broaden knowledge and under-standing of the Executive Branch of Government as well as help teens develop their role in citizenship through service, civic educa-tion, and engagement. Participants attended workshops, listened to guest speakers, took part in a town hall meeting, and completed a service project. While at the conference, participants learned the meaning and importance of the Democratic process, explored the history of the Presidency and election process, and explored ca-reers in politics. Conference delegates also had the opportunity to visit memorials, historical sites and museums in Washington, D.C. and experience the Inaugural Day events of the 45th President including

the Oath of Office, Presidential Address and Inauguration Parade. Jessica Zhang shared her experi-ence in the following report:

“I gained a better understanding of governmental procedures and witnessed many of the nations land-marks. On Wednesday night, we learned about the media's role in politics and history at the Newsuem and from the speakers involved in the media. We also took a nighttime tour of Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, MLK Memorial, and Lincoln Memo-rial. On Thursday morning, we listened to speak-ers from the Department of Agriculture and Of-fice of Management and Budget before heading to prune bushes at the University of Maryland to help the community. Throughout the week, we experienced a mock election from the primaries and caucuses to the town-hall meetings. I was grateful for this opportunity to be in DC and watch the capitol adapt towards a new leader. I encourage all 4-Hers to take advantage of these wonderful opportunities to not only CWF but to all National 4-H events.”

Around the County Teen Winter Camp

January 20-22, 2017

It was another fantastic weekend at this year’s 4-H Teen Winter Camp at L.G. Cook 4-H Camp in Stokes State Forrest. In attendance were 4-H teens from Morris, Gloucester, Salem, Mercer, and Hunterdon counties. Representing Morris County were Julie Gerber, Kayla Mlynarski, Johanna Pipoli, and

Clayton Zdroik. Many thanks to chaperones Christen Harm and Glen Zdroik. Special thanks to Claybuster 4-H Club leaders, Keith Small and Brian Scanlan for teaching muzzleloaders.

Johanna Pipoli shared this report on her experience:

“I was looking forward to sledding and lots of snow fun, but the weather, had other plans and we were left with a snow free weekend. That didn't stop the fun, though. When we arrived, we went to the nature center and played a lot of different "getting to know each other" games. After the games, we went to the winter headquarters to have snacks and socialize. We talked about our animals and 4-H clubs and laughed a lot. The following day we all went on a beautiful winter hike and saw a pretty waterfall. After the hike, it was back to headquar-ters for other games like giant Jenga and karaoke. We also had fun making craft projects and the highlight was needle felting. EVERYONE really enjoyed that, myself included. Af-ter such a fun couple of days it was time to leave Sunday morning. While there, I received some good pointers about chicken showmanship from another 4-Her and we enjoyed sharing pictures of our flock. So, as you can see, even without snow, we had a great time at Winter Camp. I think people should come to Winter Camp because it gives you a chance to meet peo-ple from other counties. It is also super fun with or without snow.”

Top Tips for Success

1) Choose a topic you are familiar with. This will help you feel confident and comfortable. 2) Practice makes perfect. When you practice at home in front of an audience (family, friends, pet)

you will quickly feel at ease and be prepared to handle your topic with ease on presentation day. 3) Have fun! Everyone is rooting for you and truly interested in what you’re going to say. So take a

deep breath and relax! You’ll do great!

Perfect Presentations Workshop February 8, 2017

Part of the 4-H experience is learning to give a formal presentation. Everyone, including adults, need lots of practice to feel confident and comfortable speaking in front of an audience. This year, Teen Council 4-H Club member, Erin DeBiasse, led a workshop for 4-H members and their families. Erin has many years of experience at county and state 4-H Public Presentations and helped in the creation of an instructional video used nation wide! Twenty-two audience members attended her workshop representing nine clubs! They learned what to expect at the Morris County 4-H Public Presentations Night (May 5th), how to create a great presentation, tips to “wow!” the judges, and tricks to stay calm under pressure. Here is Erin’s report:

“In the beginning of February, I present-ed a workshop instructing how to create the perfect public presentation. Novices and experienced speakers attended to learn how to present or simply sharpen their abilities. This was a fun-filled yet informative night for everyone, and I

cannot wait until presentations to see everyone show off their newly-refined speaking skills!”

4-H Club News 4-Footed Leaders

The 4-Footed Leaders Club has grown in leaps and bounds! Over this winter season, we have acquired 9 new puppies and have welcomed 7 new puppy raisers. Amazingly, four of our new puppies: Ian, Innes, Imelda and Irene, are sib-lings from the I liter (Joe & Ivy). What an amazing expe-rience for these pups to be able to interact with their siblings AND their father… since Joe was welcomed back home after 1.5 years in The Seeing Eye Breeding program.

Our club members have been very busy taking our pups on field trips to the Leonard J. Buck Gardens, New York City, a local nursing home and the Broadway Christmas Wonderland at Mayo Performing Arts Center. Additionally, our 4-Footed leaders and their pups were invited to a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at The Connection of Summit, serving as an excellent example of how one can serve the community as a puppy raiser.

Our club hosted the annual “Blindfolded luncheon” on February 4th. Puppy raisers experienced the challenge of performing tasks blind-folded, including dressing, counting money, writing checks and eating a meal. It was an incredible opportunity to simulate how the blind vis-ually manage each and every day. Several of our new members mar-veled at how reliant you become on your other senses to help guide you when you blindfolded, especially their sense of hearing and touch.

The highlight of our season was the visit of TSE President and his wife, Jim and Ginger Kutsch. Jim and Ginger graciously accepted our invitation to visit with our club and meet the many new pups and pup-py raisers. They offered great insight into their own personal expe-

riences with blindness as well as how TSE is striving to enhance the lives of others living with blindness.- By Meg Armstrong

BTC is keeping up with visits to Care One once a month. The resi-dents really enjoy the animals. If you would like to bring your friendly animal on a Care One visit please send an email to [email protected] for the next upcoming date. The more the merrier. We also have a pen pal project where we write letters to elderly people in need of some cheerful letters or drawings. Also we made happiness sign that we hung around our neighborhood. We also got involved in a 4-H project and wrote letters to Russian kids learning about "snail mail" and the English language. We can't wait to see who writes back. —By Johanna Pipoli

Puppy Tails Puppy Tails welcomed several furry bundles of joy this past month. The club is getting larger and the club is welcoming many new families. The older puppies seem to be enjoying the new little ones who are starting to learn their way around. January was a hard month with bad weather, but the club met sev-eral times and all the puppies practiced their skills. The puppies and their raisers are going to Newark Airport in April – which will have lots of new experiences for the puppies – it should be an interesting and fun time. An upcoming visit to St. Francis' nursing home will bring lots of socialization skills for the puppies and smiles for the residents. A week-end trip to Washington DC for puppies and their families is always a great experience – that trip is on March 31-April 2. There is also a trip to the Bridgewater mall and the Hillsborough library for the puppies and families. Puppy Tails Club is keeping everyone on their paws and toes! - By Elizabeth Kaufmann

Teen Council These past couple of months, the Teen Council has been hard at work. Recently, several members at-tended winter camp and had an amazing time hiking and crocheting. Throughout the year, we have been visiting other clubs to inform and teach members on a wide area of subjects. Starting next week, our club will be donating to a plethora of needy charities through KIVA.com. Our club plans to attend NJTC and Public Presentations night in the upcoming months. —By Erin DeBiasse

Club Pages for the Yearbook Deadline: June 9th

It’s time to start designing your club’s yearbook page! The page should tell people about your club, include photos or drawings representing the club’s activities, and encourage new members to join. Be as creative as you like! This is a great opportunity to showcase your club.

Use black ink or a marker to create your page, as it will be photocopied in black and white. Create your page on 8 1/2” x 11” paper with a 1/2” bor-der around the edges.

All club pages are due to the office no later than Friday, June 9th. Late entries will not be pub-lished.

Overnight at the Fair Deadline: June 30th

Anyone (both youth and adults) who stays overnight at the fairgrounds must submit a overnight permission form to the 4-H office by Friday, June 30th. No exceptions.

Forms can be downloaded from the 4-H website at http://njaes.rutgers.edu.

Remember: All youth must be accompanied by a parent or an authorized 4-H volunteer. Permission forms for both youth and adults must be complete (with all required signa-

tures). Everyone will be assigned evening and morning responsibilities

to ensure the fairgrounds is clean and projects are kept safe overnight.

Staying overnight at the Fair is a privilege. Everyone is ex-pected to follow the rules and guidance of the overnight coor-dinator.

Yearbook and Fair Theme Design Contest Deadline: May 18th

Got an idea for this year’s 4-H Fair theme? Thinking of a design for the yearbook cover? Send us your ideas!

Think about what the Fair means to you and in-corporate this fact into your design. Make sure your design represents all of 4-H, not just your specific club.

Submit your entry to the 4-H office by Thurs-day, May 18th. You may enter as many designs as you wish, but each entry must include your name, phone number, and club on the back. De-signs must fit on an 8 1/2” by 11” sheet of pa-per with a 1/2 inch border around the edges. The contest is open to all 4-H members.

Last year’s winning theme was “Imagine the Possibilities”

Help Sponsor our Fair and Earn an Amusement Ride

Wrist Band

For every $500 of sponsorship that you bring in to the Fair, you will receive a week-end amusement ride wristband. This is an opportunity to ride all the rides during the Fair FOR FREE! Please solicit sponsorships from your places of employment as well as local companies and businesses. (Anywhere you and your family shop: salon, car shop, grocery store, restaurant, dry cleaner, etc.). Please also ask your own family and 4-H club if they would like to be sponsors. Private and corporate sponsorship is necessary to meet Fair expenses. We need to raise over $20,000 for sponsorship. Sponsorship can be as small as $25; any amount is greatly appreciated. Please contact Kathy in the 4-H office at 973 285-8311 for more info on how to get Fair sponsors. Sponsor forms can be down-loaded our website at http://morris.njaes.rutgers.edu/4h/sponsorship.html.

You Can Choose What To Do ! Here are some ideas of things to do at the Fair:

Bring your camera to the Fair. Anyone can take pictures of anything you think will make great fair pictures. Photos can be entered into the Fair Photo contest after the Fair.

Present a Program at Cloverbud Corner. All 4-H members are invited to give a short talk or presentation on a topic of their choice to our youngest fairgoers (grades 3 and under). Talk about your 4-H project and bring your animal/project with you. Or talk about anything you think would interest our young friends. Contact Kelly at the 4-H Of-fice if you’d like to sign up.

Give a Public Presentation. All 4-H members who will be giving a county public presentation are invited to present again at the Fair.

Show your club’s team spirit. Have your club’s meeting at the Fair, and maybe a club party! Talk about it with your club!

Ride on all the rides you want! For $20, 4-Hers can purchase a fair wrist-band that allows them to ride all the rides, at any time during the Fair! Call Kathy to put your name on the list. Make checks pay-able to the Morris County 4-H Association. Mail to: Morris County 4-H Fair, PO Box 900, Morristown, NJ 07963

FOOD TENT MEETING

Is your club planning to sell food at the Fair? Make sure you attend the Food Tent Meeting on May 4th at the 4-H office. Contact Kathy Murarik to learn more about food sales at the Fair. [email protected] or 973-285-8311

Country Store Needs Donations

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to clean out your closets and pack up all the toys, books, puzzles, etc. that are no long-er being played with and donate them to the Children’s Country Store at the 4-H Fair. This popular booth sells used items at bargain prices during our Fair. Last year, thanks to the generous dona-tions of our 4-H families and friends, we collected more than $1,000. Please pack items securely for safe transport and bring them to the 4-H office or directly to the Fairgrounds. Please call the office before making any deliveries to the office.
