Goals: Agenda:
• To understand what motivates a human being to act
• To experiment with an approach for discovering what motivates a person
• What is motivation?• Exercise: Identifying
your truest values• Questions
Just What Is Motivation?• Determines how we use our time• Unconscious and abstract (fuzzy) systems that
drive our purpose as a human being• Govern ALL human behaviour• How we judge good & bad, right & wrong, etc.
• Key criteria we use to evaluate how we have used our time
• It’s about our “Values”!
Values are Hierarchical• Lower level values
lead to higher level values
• Instrumental (means) values lead to terminal (ends) values
• The more an activity invokes all of one’s values, the greater the motivation!
• Sample of Work Values:
• Community• People• Expertise• Competence• Justice• Fairness

Discovering Your Motivators
• What’s important to you about your career?
• This can apply to any context, e.g.– Business / Career– Relationships– Health & fitness– Family– Personal Growth
Values Clarification Steps:
• Number the values according to their importance:– “Of the values you identified, which is most
important?”– “Assuming you have (list values already
chosen), is ___ or ___ more important to you?”– “Assuming you have ___ (list values already
chosen), if you couldn't have ___ but you could have ___, would that be OK?”
Values Clarification Steps:
• Continue numbering the values according to their importance.
• Rewrite the list of values according to their importance.
• Assess amount of time currently spent fulfilling values versus desired time
• Develop action plan to fulfill values• Look over the list daily, test all of your
pursuits against it!
Summary Points
• The key is to focus on:• What the individual really wants• What they care about• What uniquely matters to them• What this looks like in behaviour• What they can do to get some of it now• All of these together create a highly
motivated client
