• To experiment with an approach for discovering what motivates a person

• What is motivation?• Exercise: Identifying

Just What Is Motivation?• Determines how we use our time• Unconscious and abstract (fuzzy) systems that

drive our purpose as a human being• Govern ALL human behaviour• How we judge good & bad, right & wrong, etc.

• Key criteria we use to evaluate how we have used our time

• It’s about our “Values”!

Values are Hierarchical• Lower level values

lead to higher level values

• Instrumental (means) values lead to terminal (ends) values

• The more an activity invokes all of one’s values, the greater the motivation!

• Sample of Work Values:

• Community• People• Expertise• Competence• Justice• Fairness

Discovering Your Motivators

• What’s important to you about your career?

• This can apply to any context, e.g.– Business / Career– Relationships– Health & fitness– Family– Personal Growth

Values Clarification Steps:

• Number the values according to their importance:– “Of the values you identified, which is most

important?”– “Assuming you have (list values already

chosen), is ___ or ___ more important to you?”– “Assuming you have ___ (list values already

chosen), if you couldn't have ___ but you could have ___, would that be OK?”

Values Clarification Steps:

• Continue numbering the values according to their importance.

• Rewrite the list of values according to their importance.

• Assess amount of time currently spent fulfilling values versus desired time

• Develop action plan to fulfill values• Look over the list daily, test all of your

pursuits against it!
