Verse fish and chips met erwtenpuree.

Sleedoorn-bessen, handgeplukt in Dartmoor.

Association News
Discover England ProjectWe’re always out and about actively promoting the Path, but over the past six months we’ve been on an exciting adventure to raise awareness to people in Germany and the Netherlands. Our project ‘Discover England’s South West Coast Path’ has been specially created to encourage overseas visitors to book walking holidays in the UK and explore the wonderful Coast Path that continues to gain fame as one of the best walks in the world. The project exists thanks to the Discover England Fund, which was announced by Government towards the end of 2015 and marked the start of a three-year £40 million fund to support the growth of tourism in the UK. Following a rigorous application process, we were delighted to become one of 21 initially successful applicants to benefit from Round 1 funding for small scale pilot projects. The funding has enabled us to develop much needed materials for this growing market, making researching, planning and actually being on a walking holiday in the South West easier than ever before. We’ve created itineraries of between one and seven days that summarise some of the best walks, places to eat, drink and sleep and things to do in the hope that more
people will choose to visit the UK on a year-round basis. The itineraries include: ‘The Wilderness Coast’ from Minehead to Combe Martin, ‘The Coast of Legends’ from Clovelly to Tintagel, ‘The Wild West Coast’ from Mount’s Bay to St. Ives, ‘The Nautical Coast’ from Plymouth to Dartmouth, ‘The Seafood Coast’ from Torquay to Brixham, ‘The Timeless Coast’ from Charmouth to Beer. Each one includes logistics of how to get from place to place with key travel information including local bus routes, rail links and nearby airport. Which is really useful information for all visitors of course! Our project focuses on the established markets of Germany and the Netherlands where a strong walking and hiking culture already exists. We’ve had the pleasure of meeting many thousands of enthusiasts at trade shows and in-country events we’ve been attending and are pleased to report feedback has been overwhelmingly positive so far and a great deal of credit has been given to us for going to the effort of translating all our materials into Dutch and German. If you want to know more about the project and what’s happening next, visit www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/love-the-coast-path/DEF
FIVE-DAY ITINERARY
Brace yourself for calf-busting walks in
remote and rugged coastal territory littered
with legends, shipwrecks and ancient history.
Day One
AM Start your day at Clovelly (catch the No.
519 bus from Bude or the No. 319 from
Barnstaple/Bideford). Head a short distance
westwards along the Coast Path to gawp
at wild coastal scenery and views to Lundy
Island from the Angel’s Wings Shelter – built
in 1826 by Sir James Hamlyn Williams of
Clovelly Court. Back at the entrance to the
village, wend down cobbled streets to the 13th
Century quay, where a handful of fishermen
still load their catch onto carts pulled by
donkeys. Dine on the local seafood in an
historic inn, visit the home of author Charles
Kingsley, and step beyond the lifeboat station
to find the coastal waterfall, behind which it’s
believed that Merlin, King Arthur’s magician,
was born.
PMHead to Hartland Point 7.9 miles (12.7km) from
Clovelly, to clap eyes on yet more of the jagged
cliff scenery, the wreck of the Johanna and the
granite hulk of Lundy Island, this time from the
foot of the decommissioned lighthouse. [No
public transport penetrates this remote stretch
of coast, but if you haven’t got a car it’s worth
forking out for a taxi. Bayside Taxis, in Bude,
cater for walking groups and are also dog-
friendly.] Your last stop of the day (which also
requires a taxi) is Hartland Quay, another wave-
lashed backdrop that’s starred in numerous
films including Robert Louis Stevenson’s
Treasure Island. Delve into the smuggling and
seafaring heritage of this Iron Coast at the
Hartland Quay Museum, then hunker from the
elements in the local inn that’s decorated with
memorabilia from the countless shipwrecks on
these treacherous shores.
DiscoverDay Two
AM Next stop is Morwenstow Church – 11.7
miles (18.8km) by car or taxi from the inn at
Hartland Quay. It’s built around a shrine to
the 5/6th Century Saint Morwenna, who built
herself a hermitage nearby at Hennacliff. Pass
Morwenna’s Well (said to have sprung when
the saint stopped to rest here) on a 2.2 mile
walk (3.5km) to the cliff-edge Hawker’s Hut,
built out of shipwreck timbers by the eccentric
poet and clergyman, Robert Hawker. As well
as meditating and writing here, Hawker also
entertained friends such as Tennyson and
Charles Kingsley. No doubt you’ll leave feeling
inspired as you trace the cliff-tops and track
back through woodland to Morwenstow’s 13th
Century inn.
PMThis afternoon it’s time to hit the waves in
Cornwall’s northernmost surf town of Bude,
8.6 miles (13.8km) away by car or taxi. [If
you are prepared to skip Hartland Quay and
Morwenstow, you can take the No. 519 bus
directly from Clovelly to Bude.] Take a surf
lesson on the sandy bottomed surf breaks
of Widemouth or Summerleaze, and enjoy
a bracing swim in Bude Sea Pool. You could,
instead, kick back and watch the action over
a Cornish cream tea. Capture the views from
the octagonal tower on Compass Point, before
a sundowner and seafood feast in a surfside
bistro.
Day Three
AMBefore leaving Bude, explore inland along the
canal towpath. Gen up on local flora and fauna
via exhibits at the Weir Wildlife Centre and
Bistro, a couple of miles (3.2km) out of town;
accessible via the No. 218 bus. Then follow the
canal to Bude’s wharf and sea lock (one of only
two in the country). This easy 4.5 mile loop
(7.2km) returns through the Marshes Nature
Reserve, where you can spot herons, egrets
and otters.
PMOnly brave drivers should tackle the steep,
winding roads into Crackington Haven 2.5
miles (4km) from Bude. Alternatively, you can
just hop on the No. 95/96 bus and gaze out to
the gob-smacking scenery. However you reach
the shoreline, it’s worth the journey to witness
cliffs zigzagged with veins of quartz, which fold
on to a craggy cove. Take a dip in the sea if you
dare, or capture the raw beauty of this Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty on camera, before
rounding up the day in the family-friendly
foodie pub that’s footsteps from the waves.
Day Four
AMBring your head for heights to Boscastle, which
is six miles (9.6km) from Crackington Haven
and accessible via the No. 95/96 bus, for a
5.6 mile walk (9km) through Thomas Hardy
country. The route doesn’t take you quite
as far as the highest cliff in Cornwall, but it
does bring you out at the equally staggering
Beeny Cliff: “In all its chasmal beauty bulks
Beeny to the sky,” wrote Thomas Hardy. Spot
seals, skirt St Juliot – where Emma Gifford first
met Thomas Hardy in 1874 – and experience
the power of the landscape at the 120-foot
Pentargon Falls.
PMExplore the ancient harbour town of Boscastle
and you’ll soon find that this pretty place,
hunkered in a steep-sided valley, bears very
few scars from the devastating floods of
2004. No doubt – like Thomas Hardy and
Emma Gifford – you will be seduced by the
romantic scenery as you feel the spray from
the blowhole beneath Penally Point (which
bellows about an hour each side of low tide).
Climb to the tower overlooking the harbour at
Willapark, and dip into the world of poppets
and piskies at the Boscastle Museum of
Witchcraft.
Day Five
AMKeep your eyes peeled for wildlife and Cornish
piskies as you explore the magical Rocky
Valley and St Nectan’s Glen. The 3.7 mile
(6km) circuit starts 2.7 miles (4.3km) outside
of Boscastle. [If you don't have a car you will
need a taxi, except on Saturdays, when the No.
95 bus stops here.] The route follows the River
Trevillet through a breathtaking glen to a 60-
foot waterfall thundering through a rock arch.
Legend says that King Arthur’s squires had to
pass through the rock arch and drop, cleansed,
into the plunge pool of St Nectan's Kieve as
part of a ritual to turn them into knights.
PM Nearly two miles (2.7km) from St Nectan’s
Glen (five minutes by car or cab), finish your
tour at a place swathed in Arthurian legend:
Tintagel Castle. Cross the footbridge to the
mighty ruins atop a sea-lashed promontory,
below which waves bellow from the eerie
Merlin’s Cave – the alleged place of King
Arthur’s magical conception. More accurate
evidence proves this majestic site was the
Earl of Cornwall’s 13th Century fortress, a
major trading port and a prosperous Dark Age
settlement. Ponder your own version of history
as you fuel up in the swanky sea-view café,
pad barefoot on the low-tide beach, and watch
the sun go down on this magnificent coast of
legends.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Accommodation: Bude is the most
convenient base, with a wide range of
hotels and B&Bs. Chic and characterful
self-catering cottages are scattered along
the coastline, as are quirky campsites
and a handful of country inns offering
comfortable rooms.
Food & drink: A couple of herring
fishermen still operate out of Clovelly, and
the restaurants here serve seafood that’s
only travelled metres from the fishing boats
to your plate. Many cafés, restaurants and
pubs offer local, seasonal ingredients.
Transport: Bude has the best transport
links, but a car is needed for some of this
itinerary. The most useful bus services
include the No. 519 between Clovelly
and Bude; the No. 595 between Bude,
Crackington Haven and Boscastle; and the
No. 95/96 between Bude and Wadebridge,
servicing Boscastle and Tintagel.
