  • The DepartmentThe Community & Cultural Services Department (CCS) is comprised of four divisions – Administration, Cultural Affairs, Human Services and Community Recreation. CCS oversees and delivers a diverse range of programs, projects and services that enrich the lives of community members-culturally, socially and physically. The Department works with the community to create and operate beautiful and welcoming public spaces and facilities for all to enjoy. CCS has a budgeted FTE staff of 167 and an operating budget of $36.6 million (FY2015-16).

  • The City of Santa Monica is looking for a Cultural Affairs Manager

    The City of Santa Monica is looking for a dynamic Cultural Affairs Manager to lead the Cultural Affairs Division. The Manager will direct the development and implementation of a broad range of policies, programs and services supporting Santa Monica’s robust creative economy, enriching the lives of the community’s residents and visitors. This includes overseeing four distinct grant programs in support of arts & cultural organizations and individual artists totaling over $600,000; a wide range of cultural events and activities in settings throughout the city; management of cultural venues including the award winning Annenberg Community Beach House and the historic Miles Playhouse; and oversight of the City’s public art program. The Cultural Affairs Division has an FTE staff of 24 and a budget of $5.6m (FY 2015-16).

    The successful candidate will work with staff, the Arts Commission and the community to build upon, refresh and advance the vision set forth in the 2007 cultural plan (Creative Capital) to reinforce the vital contribution of the arts in shaping the character of Santa Monica. The successful candidate will need to be approachable, collaborative and have strong interpersonal skills; be an innovative and strategic thinker; provide leadership in advancing the policies, programs and vision of the Cultural Affairs Division, the Department and the City; and be an enthusiastic champion and inclusive and inspiring motivator of a talented and dynamic staff team. The Cultural Affairs Manager serves as the staff liaison to the Arts Commission, is a member of the Community & Cultural Services management team and will regularly contribute expertise and perspective to organization-wide initiatives.

    Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts Administration or a closely related field. A minimum of four years of recent, paid, progressively responsible work experience in the administration of arts or arts related programs which includes a minimum of two years of management and supervisory responsibilities.

    Compensation and BenefitsThe following salary and benefits are being offered for this classified/exempt position:

    Salary Range: $131,700 to $162,588 Annually

    Retirement: California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS.

    The City does not participate in Social Security but does participate in Medicare, which requires a 1.45% contribution by both the employee and the City.

    City-paid Health Insurance: Effective January 1, 2016, the City will pay 94% of the medical insurance premium for employee and eligible dependents. Employee contributes 6% toward premium. The City pays 100% of premiums for dental and vision plans and the Employee Assistance Program for employee and eligible dependents.

    Retiree Medical: The City currently makes monthly contributions into a retiree medical trust on behalf of eligible employees.

    Long Term Disability Insurance: The City pays the premium for Long Term Disability coverage.

    Supplemental Retirement Plans: A 457 plan is available and there is no city contribution. A 401(a) plan is provided and there is a mandatory employee contribution. New hires, upon initial eligibility for enrollment into the plan, will have the one-time option to opt out for the lifetime of the plan.

    Holiday/Vacation/Sick Leave: Holidays – 12 days/year which includes up to 2 floating holidays.

    Vacation – Minimum accrual of 12 days/year with a maximum accrual of 21 vacation days/year, with a 40 hour/year cash-out provision.

    Sick Leave – Accrual of 12 days/year; a portion of unused sick leave can be cashed out at the end of the fiscal year.

    Management Leave – Up to 5 days, one of which can be cashed out at the end of the fiscal year.

    Term Life Insurance: City-paid term life insurance policy in the amount of 2 times annual salary.

    Management Team Associates: The Cultural Affairs Manager is a member of the Management Team Associates (MTA) bargaining unit and receives any other benefits provided under the terms of the MTA Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
