This is our last newsletter for this school year. Hopefully I can clarify issues regarding physicals and sport physicals.
Here we go!!
Students entering 6th grade must have a new physical on file in the nurse’s office in order to come to school. We have
a first day exclusion policy which means your student cannot come to school on the first day if they do not have a com-
pleted physical. As part of this physical exam, sixth graders need to have proof of the Tdap vaccine also. The sixth
grade physical is good for the sports physical if the doctor marks “yes” to the two areas on the physical that says physi-
cal education and interscholastic sports. It is good for one year from the date on the exam. If you wish the student to
participate in sports throughout the entire school year, get the physical sometime between June and August.
Students entering 7th and 8th grade - A reminder to parents about sport physicals. Students who wish to play sports must have a current
sport physical. (A sport physical is good for one year from the date your student was seen by the doctor.)
The Worth Clinic provides lower cost sport physicals. Call them at (708) 371-3398. They are located at 11601 South Pulaski Road, Alsip
Il. 60803. Call early because they fill up fast.
Minute clinics at Walgreens also do sport physicals. Locations are posted at our main office.
Sixth graders also need a dental exam to be completed by the end of sixth grade.
Simmons offers Smile Illinois Mobile Dentists program every May. This year they are coming on May 16th ---forms were sent home about
four weeks ago.
As always call with questions about any health issues or programs. Have a great summer.

As another school year comes to a close, please remember the school
dress code. Students can wear shorts and skirts that are an appropri-
ate length, at your fingertips or longer when your hands are down.
No sandals or flip flops are allowed for safety reasons. Also, ban-

Student Council 5th annual Cancer Fundraiser was a huge success.
Together, Simmons Students raised 1,500 dollars for the Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society. Thirty nine students shaved or cut 8
inches of hair off, five teachers were also added to that list. Two
female students shaved their head for the first time in our five year
history in raising money for caner research. Many thanks go out to
our volunteer hair dressers that took time out to shave and cut hair.
Our students prove once again to have huge heart!
Student Council Mathletes
The Simmons Math-
letes teams performed
admirably at the
SWIC conference
meet in April. The
8th grade team placed
8th as a team, with
Marcus Favila taking
3rd place overall. The
6th and 7th grade
team placed 11th, but
the future looks
bright for this team, made up mostly of 6th graders. We had some
great times and a productive season that was a learning experience
for us all. We look forward to next year with new teammates and
new challenges. Listen to the announcements and/or see Mr.
Kuzanek in room 250 formore information regarding Mathletes.
On Thursday, April 26, NJHS hosted the 38thannual induction ceremony. The event
was a huge success thanks to the students, staff and family members. Congratulations
to all the 2012 inductees to the Simmons Chapter of the National Junior Honor Soci-
ety. We are so proud of you! Keep up the great work!
Although inductions have come to an end our fundraising efforts are still going strong.
On Saturday April 21st students gathered at Palos Swallow Cliff for our 2nd annual
Cystic Fibrosis stair climb. We are very proud to announce that our students collected
more than $1,400 fort his cause.
The end of the year also brings several fun activities. We are currently scheduling the
8th grade picnic. The picnic is tentatively scheduled for Saturday May 12th at a loca-
tion that is to be announced.

PBIS is going strong here at Simmons Middle School. The stu-
dents are working daily on the 3 R’s (RESPECT SELF, RESPECT
OTHERS, and RESPECT PROPERTY). Donations for PBIS
rewards are being accepted all school year. Students can bring
their donations to their first period teacher. Every little bit helps.

Declamation
Ms. Price would like to congratulate the entire Simmons Declamation Team for a great season. First, the team competed against one an-
other at, “An Evening with the Simmons Speech Team” on April 16. After each performance was judged, scores were tallied and ribbons
were awarded. Congratulations to Salsabyl Ibrahim and Madeline Sievers who tied for 6th Place, Alec Sudzus and Stephanie McFann who
tied for 5th Place, and Dominica Kalafut and Salsabyl Ibrahim who finished in 4th Place. In 3rd Place we had Jordan Roskos. Second
place also ended in a tie between Mercedes Lopez and Brianna Castrogiovanni. And the 1st place winners were Damian Rodriguez and
Xavier Jacquez-Flores for their Humorous Duet. Thank you to Ms. Vieni, Mrs. Wells, Mrs. Valerio, Ms. McNally, Ms. Korkosz, and Mrs.
Garcia for serving as judges that night. Mrs. Valderrama and Ms. Barry deserve a big thanks for helping with the refreshments. Kudos to
the fabulous Mr. Abramczyk for videotaping the event. A final thank you to Mrs. Flood, Mr. McDermott, and Mr. Simpson for their atten-
dance, support, and supervision that evening.
There were even more great performances at the SWIC Declamation Meet at Orland Junior High School on April 18. There were 12
schools competing and the competition keeps getting harder and harder each year. However, Simmons keeps getting better. This year Sim-
mons was only 5 points away from bringing home a 3rd place school wide trophy. Medals were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places to
individuals in each category. There are 6 categories and Simmons won medals in 3 of those categories. Brianna Castrogiovanni won a 3rd
place medal for her Oratorical Declamation piece. Stephanie McFann also won a 3rd place medal for her Prose reading. In addition, Mer-
cedes Lopez won a 2nd place medal for her Dramatic Interpretation performance. That was our best showing ever! Thank you to Ms.
Korkosz & Mrs. Wilson for coming to support us at our SWIC competition. A special thanks goes out to Ms. Vieni, who served as a judge
at the SWIC meet. Finally, thank you to all the administration, parents, family members, teachers, and students for all of their help and
support this season. Ms. Price is VERY proud of her team! Best Declamation Team EVER! Great job!
Drama SST
SST had another successful activity where we discussed the properties
of solids and liquids and created a substance that is both!!!!! WANT
TO SEE HOW?!!! Please go to the school website for video clips on
your Simmon's students performing and explaining important science
concepts from SST. Thanks to everyone for coming out and hope to
see you next year!
This year we have put together an amazing Musical, “Annie”.
We hope you come and watch. It is going to be a very active
play. The play Annie is about a little girl named Annie who is
an orphan. She and all the other orphans are going through a
hard time with their so called guardian Ms. Hannigan. Annie
tries to run away from the orphanage to go look for her parents.
On the other hand, though, Mr. Warbucks is looking for an
orphan to come and spend the holidays with him. Come and
watch the play and cheer on Annie to help her find hope. We
hope to see your there!!!
Date: May 3rd & May 4th
Time: 6:30pm

We ended April with Red Ribbon Week and the Oak
Lawn Village Block Party. Thanks to everyone who
helped out!! To close out the year we will have our Just
Say No Club pizza party (tentatively) May 7th after
school until 3:30. Thank you to the students, staff and
parents for the support all year round. It is very impor-

8th Grade
Welcome May! Our eighth graders are continuing to work hard in their final months at Simmons. In Spanish we will be covering clothing
and shopping vocabulary and learning how to conjugate verbs in the past tense. Students will continue to practice their reading, writing and
speaking skills in the language. In Social Studies, we will be analyzing World War II and its aftermath in current world affairs. Students
will discuss the concept of genocide and the world's response to it. In Math, classes will be reviewing the year’s topics and focusing
strongly on number sense. Students should feel well prepared as they enter their high school math courses in the fall. In Literature, stu-
dents are continuing their multi curricular projects. Students have examined major events in art, music, and history from 1950-1975.
Groups have had to find information on about math, science, social studies, and art about their topic. Each group is continuing to give a
multi-media presentation (Thank you Mr. Abramczyk for your help!) In Science, we are currently exploring the human body and learning
about the body systems. Students will be recreating the respiratory system using household materials. Through studying all this material
students will be applying their learned knowledge to the up-coming rat dissection. We will be able to identify body organs, bones, and
joints.
We wish all our eighth graders a safe, fun summer and continued best of luck in high school. Congratulations class of 2012!

7th Grade
Seventh grade had a wonderful time in Springfield! In language arts we have begun writing out research papers on Illinois history. In
science we have completed the text on Sound and Light - learning the nature of sound and light waves, how they travel, how we use them
in our lives - for medicine, technology, and entertainment! We have begun the Animals text. We are discovering how animals communi-
cate, how they interact socially, as well as important learned and innate behaviors that help them to survive. We will continue to discover
animals and mammals - and then explore the tiny yet significant world of microorganisms! In Social Studies, we have learned about the
Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812, Barbary Pirates and our war with Tripoli, economic growth in the early years of the U.S. which de-
veloped into the Free Enterprise, Capitalistic system we have today. We found out how Manifest Destiny impacted the land conflicts with
Native Americans, how Lewis and Clark managed to map our path west, and how Texas became first independent then was annexed to
become part of the U.S. We're heading toward larger conflicts as we pursue sectionalism and continuing clashes regarding the economy
and politics. In literature we have begun reading Flipped and Fever. In Math we are learning about monomials, factors, and multiples. We
will be moving into fractions shortly. Spanish classes have just finished family trees and we are starting ways to describe people and

The school year is starting to slowdown, but sixth grade students are as active as
ever! We have a lot of exciting projects going on right now. In language arts we
are doing a “How To” speech and persuasive essays. In literature we will be fin-
ishing our novels Stargirl and Strider and work on the elements of literature and
figurative language. In social studies we just completed lessons on ancient Greece
and we are moving on to learn about Rome! We will be participating in various
center activities to learn about Rome. In math, we just completed learning about
positive and negative integers. We learned how to add, subtract, multiply and di-
vide with them. In art, we are drawing symbols and using them to study how col-
ors spread as well as the differences between warm and cold colors. In science we
are learning about the universe! For a project, we had to create our own star by
naming it, identify the type of star, and wrote a poem about our star. We are also
working on our skyscraper project! We are working in groups to construct a sky-
scraper out of items brought in from home. The skyscrapers will be placed on
shake tables to see which skyscraper will last the longest without crumbling!
