season heeding his words and welcome David Moyes to what

will become his ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

ALL CHANGEIt’s been a period that most see as a re-shaping of the future at the Theatre of Dreams. The Boss retires and, as a prelude to that, David Gill announces he is stepping down as Chief Executive. Clearly the manager was instantly recognisable and it is true to say that most club Chief Execs retain a level of anonymity, on the other hand David Gill was one of those people who stood out amongst the crowd… and it wasn’t only because he is six-foot-five-inches tall!

David Gill arrived at the club in ’97 and was elevated to Chief Exec in 2003. When he arrived there was no sign of silver on his head but he has presided over a crucial period in the history of the club which has, at times, suffered significant turbulence. Many people believe that only David’s love for club prevented an implosion and

we now move forward into a new and quite different era, one that hasn’t

needed this kind of intense debate for many years. The financial backbone of the club has stayed intact and David will hand over to Exec Vice Chair, Ed Woodward, this summer.

Those MUDSA members that have been around for a few years and taken trips to Barcelona, Moscow and Rome will already know that we needed a ‘financial bridge’ to make some of the detail happen and David never hesitated to assist in what was a historic trip to Barcelona both for the club and MUDSA. He gave us a life line that allowed MUDSA to charter its own aircraft and take the largest number of disabled supporters to what was effectively an away fixture. Being able to charter our own plane was the key to allowing so many disabled fans to make the trip of a life time to see the ‘Treble’ clinched in such a dramatic way.

David is staying around as a non-

executive Director of the club but has a new lease of life as Vice Chair of the FA and a member of the UEFA Executive

Committee. Clearly this demonstrates

the high regard that David is held in by his peers but we will miss the close relationship that we have enjoyed

for so long. On the other

INFORMATION BOOKLET 2013/14

The Agony and the Ecstasy was the way I began summarising the 2011-12 season but words alone couldn’t describe the contrast between then and a conclusion to 2012-13! Alex Ferguson walked through the door at Old Trafford to take the reins of what is one of the biggest dynasties in world sport; fans were increasingly desperate for a manager that could propel the dynasty into a new era that involved winning league titles again, nothing else would do. Curiously, we suffered a 26 years spell without that bit of silverware to polish and a further 26 years later we find ourselves with a total of 20 domestic titles, 13 of them masterminded by a period of managerial history that will be extolled for generations.

The Boss retiring was inevitable but the question was ‘when?’ On Wednesday the 8th of May the news spread like wildfire but the drums were beating the night before. I received a text around 9.30 the previous evening saying that there was to be a piece in one of the broadsheets the following day ‘and it’s got legs!’ The clouds descended, people looked at each other in an almost despairing way but I found that the sense of loss evaporated quite quickly to be replaced with an overwhelming feeling of privilege that we, as supporters, had witnessed a period of Manchester United history that will remain a part of everyday conversation for years to come.

A genius and a gent is the way I would describe the Boss. He gave his heart and soul to every aspect of this huge football club. An incredible mind and a powerful passion left its mark on everyone lucky enough to meet him even if it only involved the briefest of conversations. MUDSA members were probably the luckiest as most will have had an opportunity to chat and have their photo taken with him at our Annual Dinners or Christmas Parties. He will be missed but his departing message to the fans was to believe in his successor and so we move into the 2013-14

hand we wish him every good fortune as he strides along that path hoping we will be able to catch up with him at many future Annual Dinners.

APPLICATIONSMuch of the Information Booklet 2012-13 was spent explaining the new match ticket application procedures. In anyone’s language, the change was seismic and asked our group of supporters to adapt to something that most people would struggle with. To be perfectly honest, the response from our members is nothing short of heroic and every single member deserves credit for adjusting to the new type of application system despite the despair it sometimes caused. Our recent AGM discussed this subject at length and clearly the learning curve still needs somewhere in the region of two more seasons for some members to be fully acquainted with every nuance of the process.

Our friends in the Ticket Office also deserve a hearty word of thanks for the part that they have played in new application process. They and the Call Centre staff have had a learning curve of their own involving another level of terminology to get used to. Their willingness to ‘oil the wheels of change’ is beyond question and they will continue to do the same as long as it takes! Special thanks to Sam Kelleher and Chris Moss for the pivotal parts they have played!

THANKSIt wouldn’t be a new Information Booklet without offering my sincere thanks to the band of volunteers which is the MUDSA committee! A great bunch of colleagues is the only way to describe them and the effort involved to produce what is the MUDSA calendar of events is much greater than the sum of all its parts. Many thanks!

And finally, on behalf of all MUDSA members, I would like to thank all of the Manchester United staff for everything they have contributed in supporting MUDSA throughout the last 12 months. Your help is very much appreciated because we couldn’t do what we do without you!

MANCHESTER UNITED DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION SUMMER 2013 SUMMER 2013

MANCHESTER UNITED DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION 9

The 2012/13 campaign will go down as a landmark season in Manchester United’s history as they claimed an unprecedented 20th league title. It also marked the end of an era as Sir Alex announced his retirement, with David Moyes moving in to the managers seat.

AUGUSTVan Persie came off the bench to make his United debut at Goodison Park but the £24million man could not stop the Reds slumping to a 1-0 defeat against Everton. Goodison is always a tough away game! The Dutchman opened his account for the club in style the following Saturday though, as United beat Fulham 3-2

SEPTEMBERA Robin van Persie inspired United went from strength to strength in September, recording five straight victories before Spur’s first win in 23 years at Old Trafford condemned United to a second defeat of the season. Paul Scholes marked his 700th appearance for the club with a goal, as United put four past a lacklustre Wigan Athletic while new signing Alex Buttner opened the scoring with a stunning debut goal. A week later United visited Anfield, coming from behind to win 2-1. Both sets of fans paid tribute to the 96 victims, while Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez put last season’s problems behind them by observing the pre-match pleasantries.

OCTOBERUnited’s flawless October was only upset by Chelsea who knocked us out of the Capital One Cup Fourth Round in a nine-goal thriller. Convincing wins over Newcastle and Chelsea in the league were overshadowed as the latter accused referee Mark Clattenburg of using inappropriate language towards Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel – he was later cleared of all charges.

NOvEMBERVictory against Braga saw United qualify for the Champions League knockout stages, while wins over Arsenal, Aston Villa, QPR and West Ham made them the bookies favourites for a 20th league title. Van Persie scored to help sink his former club Arsenal and complete the record of scoring against every current Premier League club. A European trip to Turkey made the headlines for the wrong reasons —Galatasaray fans met United at the airport with reminders

when Robin van Persie won the golden boot. RVP was unquestionably the difference in United winning the Premier League, scoring 26 league goals. However he did have a bad run of one goal in 13 games between February and April and unusually for him, missed good chances against both Real Madrid and Chelsea. Carrick, meanwhile, has been consistently superb throughout the campaign. He was the only certain starter in midfield and played alongside Rooney, Giggs, Anderson, Cleverley, Scholes and even Phil Jones in a 4-2-3-1 formation. He even played at centre back again. Not a good result and a

choice born of necessity, but he did his best! What’s more, the fans noticed. “It’s Carrick, you know… hard to believe it’s not Scholes,” was penned a long time ago, but never really took off until February this year when the United fans sang it non stop for twenty minutes at Loftus Road.

MOST IMPROvED PLAYERSDavid De Gea, Rafael and Johnny Evans

QUESTIONS FOR THE NEW SEASONDanny Welbeck and Chris Smalling: Will this be the season they turn all that potential in to excellence? What IS Phil Jones’s best position? Will Kagawa get the chance to play in his best position behind the striker? Is Buttner “United quality”?

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTThe referee in the Madrid game. That was never a red card!

of their infamous ‘Welcome to Hell’ greeting in 1993. The club unveiled a bronze statue of Ferguson outside the Sir Alex Ferguson stand, with club legends Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Peter Schmeichel and Dwight Yorke visiting Old Trafford to witness the special event. The month ended with relief for United’s defence as we ended an 11-game run without a clean sheet with a 1-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford.

DECEMBERThe Reds’ dramatic season continued into December, when their trip to Reading produced seven goals in the first 35 minutes. United came out on top as the lethal pairing of Rooney and van Persie once again hauled United out of a tricky situation with three goals between them. Van Persie was the hero as United extended their lead at the top of the Premier League with a last-gasp derby win, at the Etihad. United had it all to play for as they entered the new year on top of the Premier League and in the last 16 of the Champions League.

JANUARYIt was New Year cheer for Sir Alex as United ended his 71st birthday celebrations with an accomplished 4-0 performance against Wigan Athletic. A close escape in the FA Cup at West Ham followed — thanks to Ryan Giggs and RVP combining for a superb injury time equaliser before Wayne Rooney secured victory in the replay. United

beat Liverpool 2-1 (Hurrah!) but were denied all three points at Spurs by a late Dempsey equalizer. However, January provided few hiccups in the end, with Fulham the next to fall in the FA Cup and a 2-1 win against Southampton restoring a seven-point lead over City.

FEBRUARYA clean sweep of February’s Premier League fixtures established a 15-point gap at the top of table, while a place in FA Cup quarter finals was assured with a win over Reading. Perhaps the most enduring victory for United fans was against QPR, in which Rafael scored a candidate for goal of the season and Ryan Giggs scored on his 999th appearance. A mouth-watering Champions League tie against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu came next and United grabbed the vital away goal at the Bernabau through Danny Welbeck. However, inevitably Ronaldo popped up to score in his first competitive appearance against his old club.

MARCHShinji Kagawa made his mark with a stunning hat trick against the canaries to open March. The home leg against Madrid awaited. A goal up with nearly an hour gone, United were well on top. Then a ludicrous red card turned the game on its head, with Nani being sent off. Luka Modric soon equalised before Ronaldo completed the turnaround at Old Trafford to subdued celebrations from the Portugal international. In the following

FA Cup game against Chelsea, United uncharacteristically surrendered a two-goal lead against Chelsea to draw 2-2.

APRILDefeat to Madrid seemed to take the wind out of United’s sails and the team hit a run of indifferent form, although still managing to get the 1-0 wins against Reading and Sunderland you need to win the league Chelsea knocked us out of the FA Cup by the odd goal in the replay, while City were offered a glimmer of hope in the title race with a close 2-1 victory at Old Trafford. But United ground out a very important 2-0 win against Stoke in which van Persie scored to end a run of ten games without a goal. The Dutchman struck again to grab a point against West Ham. It was all set up for another famous night at Old Trafford when City lost to Spurs on Sunday. Aston Villa were the victims and United duly obliged, with RVP’s sumptuous volley the highlight of the evening and United were Champions again!

MAYThough May lacked drama on the field, it was a month of whirlwind announcements — including the news that after 26 seasons, 1,500 games and 49 trophies, Sir Alex was retiring. There was a classic late United winner against Swansea City as Ferdinand — who had not scored since 2008 — smashed home in front of the Stretford End. And in a fitting final Fergie flourish, the season

ended in a crazy 5-5 draw against West Brom.

THE FIvE MOST IMPORTANT WINSChelsea (away) 3-2, October Aston Villa (away) 3-2, November Manchester City (away) 3-2, December Newcastle (home) 4-3, December Everton (home) 2-0, February

DEFINING MOMENT: THE DECEMBER DERBYVan Persie’s winner in stoppage-time at Manchester City felt significant but, since it came in December it was inappropriate to bracket it with Steve Bruce’s header against Sheffield Wednesday, Paul Scholes’s breakthrough at White Hart Lane or Federico Macheda’s flick-and-shot past Brad Friedel. Yet it took United five points clear of City, and the noisy neighbours never got any closer.

BEST GOAL: RvP vS ASTON vILLARafael da Silva’s thunderous hit at Queens Park Rangers was set to scoop the award, then Van Persie ran on to a 40-yard pass from Wayne Rooney to place a brilliant volley past Brad Guzan on an anxious Monday night to settle everyone’s nerves.

Capturing the 20th league title and the under 21s’ reserve league (with a spectacular comeback in the final), has made this season a much more enjoyable experience than the 2011-12 effort.

United managed to stay in the cups a bit longer this year, we did at least go out to reasonable opposition: far too much Madrid and way too much Chelsea.

While the end result in the league is a major cause for celebration which we can all dine out on for months, it was a very hard fought campaign which had its fair share of nervy close encounters. Although we haven’t really thrashed any team this season, on a number of occasions we looked as though we might.

To have been top since November 24th speaks volumes for the club’s

determination to get our trophy back.

The retirement of Sir Alex did bring a tinge of sadness to the end-of-season celebrations, but nothing lasts for ever. Things as well as people move on and we wish both Alex and Scholesy all the very best for the future. Alex, in particular, has been very generous with his time and there have been many occasions, when he attended MUDSA annual dinners and Christmas lunches which many of us will always remember with fondness, and always think of them as very special and unique occasions.

The Annual Information booklet provides a wonderful opportunity to thank a number of individuals and organisations for the fantastic support they have given the Visual Impairment section over the season.

Our wonderfulstewards

Viv, Tom, Alan, Joy, Keith, Sylvia and many more. Unfortunately, we haven’t had Lyn around this season after sixteen years of match day support. She has been greatly missed, and it is hoped that she will be back with us again next season.

Viv has individually kept the show on the road on match days but now has help from other members of the stewarding staff. If it wasn’t for Viv and Tom and their knowledge and experience over many years, match day would descend into total chaos in our whole area. They constantly keep their eye on situations and everything is taken care of in a very professional manner and without any fuss. Thank you all for doing such a great job and looking after us throughout the season.

The matchprogramme on CD

Unfortunately, because of the major changes in ticket allocation and the amount of unexpected work this has generated, and a change in the technology used to produce the programme, we have not been able to receive the service this season. We have greatly missed this CD as it is one of the few accessible ways we can receive direct information from the club in an appropriate format for us. Many of the visually impaired members do not have independent access to the printed word, so we very much look forward to the return of this valuable part of our match day experience at some time in the future.

Our excellentcommentary service

Without this wonderful facility most visually impaired people in our section (including me) wouldn’t have a clue what was going on. Two seasons ago, the commentary was taken back in-house where it belongs, and the excellent commentary provided by MUTV staff has been greatly appreciated. No more adverts, no more sponsor or station

information, just pure commentary, with some very useful on-field and off-the-ball information. The commentary glory days are definitely back, and thanks to United, the commentators, summarisers, and the engineers, for making it happen. There were a few glitches at the beginning of the season when the main technician was on holiday, but thankfully everything went back to normal when he returned. On the two occasions when a commentary breakdown occurred, Viv, the steward, moved quickly to contact the appropriate individuals. They, in turn, quickly resolved the problem. We all know that people work very hard behind the scenes and this is very much appreciated by everybody.

Galloways

I would also like to thank Galloways in Preston for recording the annual information booklet and the four issues of Rollin’ Reds Magazine. Each season they undertake this work and make an excellent job of it.

The new season 2013-14 is not really all that far away. The fixtures will soon be out, and while the

large number of pre-season friendlies will give us no indication whatsoever as to how the forthcoming season will pan out, it will be interesting to see how United start their new campaign under new manager David Moyes.

What is absolutely certain is that the lovely Margaret will not be with us next year, and I’m sure all of us will miss her very much. Margaret works very hard each and every season to help keep the MUDSA show on the road and has done this very successfully for a number of years. On behalf of the VI section (and anyone else who would like to be included), please accept our sincere thanks for all your efforts on our behalf, and we wish you a long and happy retirement.

Enjoy the Summer, if we actually ever get one!

Best wishes, Nigel Taylor — VI Rep

MANCHESTER UNITED DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION SUMMER 2013

The Annual Dinner is now an established feature of the MUDSA calendar of events and it is also eagerly awaited by everyone at the club. From very small beginnings with only a hot buffet as the menu, it has now evolved into a much grander affair, providing a fantastic evening’s entertainment for more than 400 guests and a five-course dinner.

Needless to say, this is a United-centric evening boasting an illustrious list of previous speakers that includes Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Denis Law, Nobby Stiles, Paddy Crerand, Alex Stepney, Martin Buchan, Norman Whiteside, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Denis Irwin, Andrew Cole, David May and Gary Neville.

We’ll be inviting key figures from the club to join us and we hope to see a few familiar faces. We are also fortunate to have an MUTV table containing some of the United legends of yesteryear, and most seasons we are lucky enough to have a trophy or two to put on display as well!

This very affordable event is one of the less formal dinners hosted by the club. No black ties, just smart casual, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the evening’s entertainment. It all starts with a four-course dinner followed by our guest speaker, the evening is then rounded off with a high-profile stand up comedian guaranteed to raise a laugh and, of course, the ubiquitous raffle, with many guests leaving with treasured prizes.

As with most of the MUDSA activities, we rely heavily on the largesse and assistance of those around us. Our thanks must therefore go to all of those people engaged in selling raffle tickets and MUDSA merchandise, likewise to Wigwam who always supply the stage and sound equipment, Mark Jones who does a great job as compere for the evening, key personnel within the club and the guys from Catering and Group Property Services.

MANCHESTER UNITED DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION 15

MUDSA originates from the very first disabled supporters’ Christmas party, way back in 1989! Back then, it was the only disabled supporters’ organisation of its kind and our thanks must go to Lynn Laffin, PA to Sir Alex, for helping us along the road to where we are today.

Needless to say, the Christmas party for our disabled supporters has become a regular feature and is probably one of the most over-subscribed events on the MUDSA calendar.

From humble beginnings in what used to be the café to the side of the first museum at the stadium, we have now migrated to the International Lounge where we can accommodate approximately 110 people each year.

The main feature of the party is the First Team Squad coming down to share the festivities with us — one of the very few occasions when supporters can actually meet their idols face to face, have photographs taken and get their souvenirs signed!

The party usually takes place around lunchtime — just after the players have finished training, so we arrange to have lunch/brunch before they arrive. All eyes are fixed in the direction of the door and our almost resident compère, Mark Jones, ushers them in to a cascade of applause. The players circulate round the room for about an hour and, occasionally, Sir Alex has come down to join us just to add the cherry on top of the icing on the cake.

As the event draws to a close we give

an award for the MUDSA Player of the Year which, this year was won by Wayne Rooney and presented by William Camden and Ann-Marie Lewis.

MUDSA Committee members, Ann-Marie Lewis and Chas Banks organise the front

and back of house, and because of the high demand, applications are filtered scrupulously to ensure fair play. Those who don’t make it one year move up the list for the following year. At present, it works out that members will get every three or four years. IMPORTANT: Members

must ensure they apply EvERY year to stay on the list!

Once again, we have the ubiquitous raffle which usually amounts to a signed shirt and a signed ball donated by the MU Foundation. It’s safe to say that this event

gives so many of our members a day that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Year after year, members can be seen leaving the party hardly able to believe they’ve just met their heroes and chatted to some of the most famous faces in world football.

Clearly events like this couldn’t happen without the assistance of so many people around the club and our sincere thanks go to all those involved in bringing this event together as it means so much to those who are lucky enough to experience it.

GOING TO THE DOGSBelle Vue Greyhound Stadium is the venue for MUDSA’s main summer event. The get-together usually attracts somewhere in the region of 50-60 people or more and is arranged for the end of July.

In the usual MUDSA style, when we do something we like to do it properly so the charge to members includes a three-course meal, drinks service, complimentary race card with table service and prime spot to watch ‘the MUDSA Derby’! — MUDSA actually

sponsors this race and you can see the winner of the 2012 MUDSA Derby in the photo below. Lil Kim is the name of this meteoric mutt and you can see some MUDSA members had the privilege of going down to the track side to share in the delight of the owners.

Keep your eyes on the MUDSA website for news of the event (or contact Ann Marie) which usually takes place on a Friday night with the doors opening at around 6.30 pm. The cost is usually £20 per person or thereabouts and includes parking.

BOWLING CHALLENGEThe annual MUDSA Bowling Challenge is an immensely popular event which takes place around late Spring each year.

In recent years we’ve congregated at the Parrs Wood Leisure Complex in East Didsbury, Manchester with some very competitive members itching to pick up the trophies!

This now traditional event is a popular one amongst our members, their families and their friends and is priced around £6 per person. After the results have been collated the trophy awards are eagerly awaited with Adult and Junior top spot winners, two Special Achievement Awards and a raffle for those who still desperately want a signed ball or a signed shirt.

This event is always attended by two of the high flying reserve players and the photo (right) gives you an impression of what it was like to be there in 2011. Suffice to say it’s a full afternoon’s entertainment so if you want more information just get hold of Ann Marie and she’ll do the necessary.

CARRINGTON vISITPredictably the MUDSA trips to Carrington rank highly in the most requested events league!

The morning kicks off with everyone gathering in time for the first team squad training session with the players being put through their paces. That’s enough excitement for some but it gets even better when MUDSA members can mingle with the players, collect autographs and have photos taken.

Part 2 of the day sees our members moving on to the Theatre of Dreams for lunch at the Red Café; following lunch we then move onto the tour of the museum and stadium. A nominal charge is made for the trip which covers the cost of the tour but members are reminded that the cost of lunch in the Red Café is not included but can be paid on the day. We must emphasise that numbers are strictly limited and that only ONE guest is allowed per member. We operate a waiting list but members shouldn’t be disheartened because everyone will eventually get their chance to live their dream.

All those wishing to take part should contact Ann-Marie using the contact details in the last page of this booklet.

MANCHESTER UNITED DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION 23

KEY DETAILS TO NOTE:n For the vast majority of games,

applications will only be accepted from MUDSA members therefore you must be an existing member or purchase/renew a membership.

n Applying for MUDSA membership has changed for the 2013-14 season.

n Straightforward membership renewals can be purchased by calling 0161 868 8009.

n New memberships can be purchased by calling 0161 868 8009 when a member of call centre staff will record the name and contact details of each individual and take payment. Your call will then be forwarded to the MUDSA Team whereupon the detail relevant to each person’s needs will be added to their individual record ensuring any ticket application is routed to the most suitable area for them.

n An automated random ballot process is operated by the Club on an individual match basis and will decide the successful applications. As with any random ballot, it is likely that you may experience a run of success but equally it could be unsuccessful for a run of games. Please be assured that the process is entirely random.

n There are three ways to apply: 1) Online at: www.manutd.

com/tickets (Create an account at www.manutd.com using your membership number in the appropriate place).

2) By calling 0161 868 8009, the Call Centre is open 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays. Calls are recorded for training and monitoring purposes.

3) If you require special assistance please call MUDSA on 0845 230 1989 who can make an application on your behalf.

n For most games, ticket applications will open six weeks prior to each fixture and close three weeks before the fixture. However, this is subject to change and details for individual fixtures can be checked at: www.manutd.com/tickets or at www.mudsa.org/fixtures.pdf Supporters will learn the outcome of their application, successful or not, by email or SMS. Alternatively, you can log into your account at www.manutd.com/myaccount or call 0161 868 8009 to find out if you have been successful. Successful applicants will receive their tickets by post prior to the game.

WHY JOIN MUDSA?MUDSA operates on two levels: The first level relates to organising the facilities used by supporters with disabilities. The second level involves the work undertaken by the MUDSA Committee members who collectively produce a magazine, memorabilia, organise social functions and much more. MUDSA’s activities are published on the MUDSA website (www.mudsa.org).

STEP ONE: BECOMING AN OFFICIAL CLUB MEMBERThe disabled person, and preferably their personal assistant, should become official members of ‘MUFC’ (Match Members), registered as a MUDSA applicant(s). When applying for your membership you should firstly contact the call centre on 0161 868 8009 and purchase your membership. Your call will then be forwarded to MUDSA at which point further details will be added to ensure your match ticket applications are directed appropriately. You will be given your new membership number over the phone when you call.

YOUR MEMBERSHIP PACK…You should receive your membership pack(s) within 28 days but if it has not arrived during that period you may wish to call the Membership Office on 0161 868 8000 to enquire about the delivery of your pack.

STEP TWO: APPLYING FOR TICKETS This information can be found on www.mudsa.org and you can also call 0845 230 1989 if you have any problems or queries.

n The ballot process will also determine a ‘waiting list’ for tickets. It is possible that a limited number of ‘unsuccessful’ applicants will be contacted before the game and offered tickets if a successful applicant cancels. Please note that the Club cannot disclose the position of individual members on this list.

n All methods of application are equal. No advantage is gained by using any particular method. Equally, the timing of an application will have no bearing on the outcome of the ballot providing it is made within the application window. Please be aware that the re-distribution of cancelled tickets will be determined by the ‘waiting list’ and there is no advantage to calling either the Club or MUDSA.

n Rota members can apply for tickets using the above process for their non-rota games and will be given equal weighting with all other MUDSA ticket applicants.

n If you have any queries about this application procedure please call 0845 230 1989 or take a look at the information on the MUDSA website, www.mudsa.org

MANCHESTER UNITED DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION SUMMER 2013 SUMMER 2013

MANCHESTER UNITED DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION 27

WHEELCHAIR USERSManchester United has the most highly regarded all-round matchday experience to offer any disabled supporter. 120 wheelchair places are situated in three separate locations around the stadium, i.e., the South East quadrant, the North East quadrant and the North West quadrant. Every wheelchair place is provided with an adjacent assistant’s seat and all of the available wheelchair places have an elevated view of the pitch.

The general access wheelchair places, as described above, are allocated as follows:

n Season pass holders (currently subscribed to capacity)

n Rota group members (three rota groups in all)

n Approx. 30% of our total availability is given to match by match applications from MUDSA members

n 10-15% to the visiting club (in line with competition rules)

In addition to our ‘general access’ wheelchair places described above, Manchester United has a significant number of accessible executive facilities. The modernisation of executive boxes has introduced further wheelchair places (one per box) with exterior viewing positions.

vISUALLY IMPAIRED SUPPORTERSManchester United offer 20 places for visually impaired (VI) supporters and their personal assistants (40 seats). Two or three of the 20 places are made available to each visiting club depending on which competition is being played i.e. Premier League or Cup games.

Commentary headsets are provided. The ‘audio description’ quality commentary is provided by MUTV as part of their simulcast to the club website. The equipment is distributed by our stewards dedicated to this area as each person arrives. Manchester United also has a unique facility which allows individual VI supporters to bring along their own hand-held LCD monitor which can be connected to the inputs beneath each seat. Any person wishing to bring their own monitor is welcome to do so but does so at their own risk.

Manchester United provides the main extracts of each matchday programme in alternative formats. Starting with Braille and Large Print, we have now moved onto audio CD and these CDs are distributed amongst both home and away visually impaired supporters.

ASSISTANCE DOGSManchester United welcomes any disabled person using an assistance dog. In keeping with GDBA/Assistance Dogs guidelines, we request advanced notification if you intend coming to a match with your dog. We would ask each owner to consider all the implications of attending such a large stadium in respect of ensuring the safety, comfort and well-being of their dog. Please ensure your dog is familiar with the immediate area around the stadium in the interests of everyone’s safety.

EASY ACCESS & AMBULATORY DISABLED SEATINGThe above terms relate to the areas of the stadium identified for use by those

supporters with moderate mobility difficulties/learning disabilities who are assessed as being unable to sit anywhere else in the stadium. For supporters falling within this category we have identified suitable seating which, in general, is situated in the area around the main wheelchair platform in the South East Quadrant of the stadium.

In total we provide approximately 90+ seats in the SE quad as stated above but we also have the facility to identify ‘end of row’ seating and seating adjacent to the ‘vomitory areas’ (where the steps enter the seating bowl area).

Within the above, Manchester United offers a unique facility located just behind the wheelchair platform; we call it Row RR. These are enhanced amenity seats with double the leg room and grab rails between alternate seats and can only be applied for by MUDSA members whose needs have been assessed as appropriate for this area.

HEARING IMPAIREDInduction loop facilities are available at all customer contact points. Any requirement for induction loops in any of the functions rooms/suites at the stadium are provided on request. Our call centre staff are trained in using the ‘text relay service’ which we will happily advise members of on request.

Those with hearing impairments would probably like to be aware that Manchester United has signed a pledge to support deaf people in all areas of the club’s activities.

OTHER DISABILITIESManchester United recognizes that there are a multitude of other disabilities and the spectrum of people regarded as disabled under the DDA 1995/Equality Act 2010 is even broader in definition than one would first imagine. In most circumstances the people that fall outside of the categories already mentioned above would be able to sit in an ordinary stand seat and apply for tickets in the usual way; we would ask those individuals to continue using the ordinary application procedures in an effort to ensure that the most appropriate use is made of the facilities that we have. If you would like further clarification about this particular group of disabled supporters then please contact MUDSA.

BLUE BADGE PARKINGManchester United has the highest number of Blue Badge parking bays available in comparison to any other club in the country and the available number has just been expanded. Any disabled supporter/supporter with mobility difficulties can call 0161 868 8009 to book any of these parking bays providing they are Blue Badge holder but please be aware that demand is

quite high. These parking bays are charged for at the standard car-parking rate at Old Trafford and each individual’s Blue Badge number must be provided together with the name of the issuing authority. Any non-Blue Badge holders may be able to purchase this parking in some circumstances; contact MUDSA with any queries.

LIFT PASSESOver the next twenty years the average age of the general population is going to increase and probably plateau in approximately 2030. Manchester United has already started making plans to ensure that fans wanting to remain in their ‘beloved seats’ for as long as possible are given the means to do so, if at all possible. To this end we offer the facility of a ‘lift pass’ and anyone who feels that they would benefit from a lift pass due to a disability or mobility difficulty should contact MUDSA or email us at [email protected] for further information about how to apply for one of these passes.

ADAPTED TRANSPORTThe official travel partner of Manchester

United, Thomas Cook Sport, has a number of accessible coaches capable of taking our disabled supporters to away games, including our disabled supporters who need to remain in their wheelchairs whilst travelling. Any disabled supporter receiving tickets to our away games will automatically be provided with information needed to book their place on a coach.

DEMAND FOR USE OF FACILITIESManchester United tickets are in huge demand regardless of which part of the stadium you are referring to and the disabled supporters’ facilities are no exception. Accepting the aforementioned, it is hugely important that we make the best use possible of the facilities available.

In view of the above and to ensure the maximum usage of the facilities available, it has been necessary to introduce the sanctions below. It is important for every member to acquaint themselves with the sanctions and hopefully avoid falling foul of them. Again, this is only done with the purpose of maintaining the best possible use of the facilities we offer.

FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALLYELLOW CARDA ‘Yellow Card’ is served to any supporter who fails to attend one of their rota matches without

giving notice. Any person receiving a ‘Yellow Card’ will be informed in writing that they will lose their automatic right to one of their forthcoming rota matches (allowing time for any exchange of correspondence).

RED CARDThe second time a person on a rota fails to give notice of non- attendance they will be issued a

‘Red Card’ which is the equivalent of being struck-off their rota matches for the remainder of the season. They will also forfeit their place on the rota system for the following season but they will not be excluded from coming back onto the rota in future seasons.

YELLOW AND RED CARD APPEALSPlease be advised that we do offer an independent appeals procedure to the Red & Yellow Card Sanction. Please be assured that, as most of the MUDSA committee are disabled people themselves, every consideration is given to the special circumstances surrounding disability and a compassionate approach will be taken at all times.

NON ROTA ABSENTEESAny MUDSA member applying on a match by match basis who is successful in the ballot but then fails to attend

without giving notice, will be excluded from the Persistent Applications League for the remainder of the season. As with the ‘Yellow and Red Card’ scenario above, an appeals procedure will be in operation and every consideration will be given to each individual’s circumstances and dealt with in a compassionate manner.

FORFEITSDuring the course of every season, a very small minority of MUDSA members mistakenly attempt to attend matches that do not appear on their rota list. Curiously, this always seems to happen for the big matches such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea but not not very often the less popular fixtures.

In view of this, it has become necessary to allow anybody making this mistake to choose between:

a) entering the match they have mistakenly attended (only if there is a place available) on the understanding that a match of equivalent status on their rota list would be forfeited, or

b) to turn around and go home, keeping their rota matches intact. Anybody who chooses to forfeit one of their matches as a result of choosing a) will be notified in writing of the match they will be expected to forfeit.

THE ABILITY TEAMManchester United has proudly addressed the issues surrounding the journey sequence of disabled supporters in respect of attending matches for many years. Our aim is to provide an equal level of comfort and a parity of match day experience for disabled supporters visiting the stadium. We will always aim to enhance the experience whenever possible.

In order to achieve the above we have a dedicated team of match day stewards, club personnel and MUDSA committee members. Together they are the ‘Ability Team’ and they

will always endeavour to make your match day experience second to none.

All together the ‘Holistic Journey Sequence’ approach can produce the best match day experience that any disabled supporter could wish for. We can provide parking close to the facilities, we can provide level or lift access to some of the best views in football, the stadium’s largest First Aid Room is adjacent to the main disabled supporters facility in the South East Quadrant and Manchester United is proud to offer the facility of our unique ‘Ability Suite’ — a dedicated match day lounge exclusively for disabled supporters.
