James Bowman, chief architect, Markel InternationalJames has been writing software for more than 15 years, starting as a developer and then tech lead and agile coach helping teams become more effective. He has worked in travel, gambling, broadcasting and media, fi nancial services, government and insurance. He likes to talk about microservices, continuous delivery, devops and understanding people’s behaviour.James became chief architect at Markel International last year where he is responsible for the architectural vision and making sure that business and technical strategy are balanced.
James Downes, founder and director, Pancentric DigitalJames is a digital veteran who has worked in the industry since 1995. He co-founded Pancentric 12 years ago having previously worked as a technologist in management consultancy. At Pancentric, he has worked with clients from across the insurance industry, including Direct Line Group, RSA, Bluefi n Group, Towergate, Cigna and Zurich, as well as businesses from a range of other sectors. James is also a Director of the Design Business Association (DBA) and an evangelist of service design, a strategic approach that he believes businesses must use if they are to truly differentiate themselves from the competition.
Kevin Gaut, chief technology offi cer, SSPKevin joined SSP in 2012 as chief technology offi cer for the insurer division and is responsible for driving innovation across SSP and forming strategic alliances.
Kevin has more than 25 years’ experience in insurance IT working for both technology vendors and leading insurance companies to deliver innovative architectural and technical design to ensure maximum business benefi t.
Malcolm Harbour CBE, former member of european parliament and board member of the Digital Policy AllianceMalcolm served 15 years as Conservative MEP for the West Midlands, including 5 years as Chairman of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee. For 12 years he was Vice President of the European Parliament’s Science and Technology Foresight Panel. He was a key player in shaping policies and legislation for the single market, manufacturing industry, the digital economy, research and consumer protection. He was appointed a CBE for services to the UK economy in 2013.
He did not seek re-election in the 2014 European Elections, and in July 2014, was appointed to the Council of Birmingham University. He is lay Council Member on the University Research and Knowledge Transfer Committees. In these roles, and as an Advisory Board member at Birmingham Science City, he is promoting innovation and stronger EU engagement to benefi t his home region. He is continuing to work with the European Policy Centre and the Centre for European Policy Studies to promote the EU single market and institutional reforms.
Before his election to the Parliament in 1999, Malcolm spent 32 years in the motor industry, as an engineer, a senior commercial executive, a consultant and a researcher.

Dr. Sebastian Herfurth, co-founder and managing director, FriendsuranceSebastian studied law in Freiburg, Bonn and Hong Kong and Chinese in Beijing. After his studies Sebastian analysed the political and human rights situation in Iran as member of the German Embassy in Tehran, hunted white-collar criminals during his time at the Department of Public Prosecution in Frankfurt and eventually joined the private equity group of an international law fi rm. Sebastian is co-founder and managing director of Friendsurance and likes disruptive business models. He is responsible for the following departments: Insurance Cooperations, Finance, Investor Relations, Human Resources, Customer Support and Business Intelligence & Controlling.
Darius Kumana, head of IT & digital strategy, Markel InternationalDarius heads IT and digital strategy for Markel International. He is not your typical technical leader, he is a someone who understands that success is no longer about having “the best” technology. Differentiation and innovation are far more likely to result from applying technology creatively to solve “the real” problems faced by businesses and end-users.
In leveraging technology as a strategic enabler of competitive advantage, Darius helps companies to recognise, understand and grasp new opportunities. He helps set clear vision and strategy and delivers against that vision through the application of Agile, Lean and User-Experience philosophies.
Darius regularly speaks at international conferences on technology leadership, user-experience and agile transformation. Regardless of the task at hand, Darius remains focused on empowering teams to create great experiences for real people. Each day, he aims to be less wrong than he was the day before.
Jasper Martens, head of marketing and communications, Simply BusinessJasper is the head of marketing and communications at Simply Business, a role he’s held since January 2013. Prior to this, Jasper worked in the Netherlands as the SEO manager for various advertising and SEO agencies.
Jasper is responsible for all marketing and communications, specialising in integrated marketing campaigns where tactics such as search, social, PR and brand are combined. In 2012, he won ‘Best marketing campaign’ at the UK Broker Awards and he was shortlisted for ‘Best use of mobile technology’ and ‘Best use of social media’ at the Technology in Insurance Awards.
Jasper holds a bachelor in marketing communications from, Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

SPEAKERSKim Miller, chief executive offi cer, GuevaraKim has a background in quantitative fi nance and behavioural economics. He has also spent time in investment banking, doing advisory, principal investing and some private equity.
Now moving into the world of entrepreneurship, Kim Founded Guevara in 2012 to bring the magic of the sharing economy to car insurance.
Kim is always keen to move quickly, uncover interesting opportunities and enjoy himself in the process.
Ash Roots, director of digital, Direct Line GroupAsh has been director of digital at Direct Line Group for just over two years and in this time has built an in-house digital services team, and led the successful launches of new apps and consumer websites. Ash joined DLG from Three UK, where he was head of online. He also held a number of other positions at Three UK including head of production and content delivery manager.
Ash graduated from the De Montfort University, Leicester with a 1st Class Bachelor’s degree in multimedia design and has been driving digital innovation across media, telecom and fi nance industries for 15 years.
Gordon Rutherford, head of marketing & e-commerce, AxaGordon heads up marketing & e-commerce for Axa Business Insurance. In a nutshell, he is responsible for brand awareness of Axa in the micro-SME space, for driving traffi c to their websites and optimising the customer experience when they get there. As well as that, Gordon is also responsible for all customer insight, public relations and internal communications. Gordon has been with Axa for fi ve years now and has, in the past, spent time working for organisations like RBS, Direct Line & TSB.

Tim Skates, group chief technology offi cer, RSATim has over 25 years of experience in fi nancial services, working across life & pensions and general insurance for the Prudential, Legal & General and now RSA. Tim is currently group chief technology offi cer at RSA having previously had responsibility for strategy & architecture in RSA’s UK business.
Through his career, Tim has worked on many large transformation programmes ranging from data warehousing and analytics, core administration platform implementations and many e-Commerce deliveries including the fi rst implementation of online life underwriting in the industry.
Although having held positions in IT advisory, pharmaceuticals and banking, his passion for balancing strategic thinking with the practical realities of delivering business value in the competitive fi nancial services market has never been stronger or more relevant.
Hugh Steed, european director, 41st ParameterHugh Steed is european director of 41st Parameter, the leader in digital fraud prevention, acquired by Experian in 2013.
At 41st, Hugh works with fi nancial institutions, e-commerce merchants, airlines and tele-communications organisations, enabling them to counter on-line fraud and cyber-crime attacks on their businesses.
Prior to joining 41st Parameter, Hugh has enjoyed a near 20 year career in
tele-communications, holding senior marketing positions at Microsoft and leading the European technical operations at several successful Silicon Valley companies. Hugh has a MSC in Telecommunications from University College London and a BEng in Electronic Systems from the University of Ulster.
James York, innovator-at-large, Worry+Peace Founder of new insurance retailer Worry+Peace (worryandpeace.com) - launching this Spring. He has insurance in the blood - the son of successful a wholesale broker - and he’s worked in the industry since graduating from Southampton University in 2003.
Now directly authorised, he represents the newer generation of insurance broker and describes himself as a “Retailer that specialises in selling Insurance”.
He loves to blog, explore side-projects, network with interesting and talented people, chat sport and ponder politics. He’s also Wolves-fan and avid badminton amateur.

As part of our drive to push innovation within insurance, we are delighted to announce that today’s event will be featuring Post’s fi rst Hackathon! We are hosting top hack teams to work from scratch on a project chosen by you.
The hackers will present highlights of the whole process at the end of the day, the idea being to show how to develop an idea to a prototype in just a few hours, with the right focus, mind-set and skills. The day will fi nish with a live audience vote to crown our winning team.
