2003 Statistics

Why the Greyhounds?

Dr. Lynn Turner reported theorigins of the Greyhound nick-name in a May 1927 issue ofthe student newspaper, TheReflector. Prior to 1926, theathletic teams were known asthe “Cardinal and Grey War-riors.” In 1926, several fans metin caucus in Men’s Hall (nolonger in existence) to chooseanother name that would dojustice to the scrapping Cardi-nal and Grey Warriors. After aheated debate, they chose“Greyhounds” because grey-hounds are long, lean animalsrenowned for speed, jumpingprowess, and fighting heart.

The University of Indianapolis is committed to excellence in all its endeavors. Consistent with the philosophyand mission statement of the university, the intercollegiate athletics program provides a broad array ofcompetitive activities for men and women to challenge them to excel as athletes and as students. Theseathletic pursuits will serve to complement, but never overshadow, the academic focus of the university. Moreover, as a member of the NCAA Division II, the university abides by the rules of that governing bodyand the principles of fair play and amateurism that serve as its foundation.
